Epitome Of Sound
A record made at Monarch pressing plant in Los Angeles (West Coast) easily identifiable by a stamp and delta number

Next Weekend
This goes against the grain for me but not having been to a northern do for 30 years I think you'd be better sticking to a venue that plays classic oldies only. Kingsway Hall at Forest Town (near Mansfield) would give you just that but its a long way to travel for a night that finishes at 12.30ish. Sorry cant recommend anything further South along those lines. Have fun whatever you do

Is The 'Upfront' Soul Scene Disappearing Up It'S Own A*se?
With all due respect that is a load of tripe and gives a false impression of Lifeline - it also fuels the fire of those who imagine that the rare scene is made up of a few "chinstrokers" standing round looking bored. I dont know how many times you've been to lifeline but the dance floor gets plenty of action right up till 7am when Rob Smith has to be peeled away from the decks. Anyway whats this obsession with a "packed" dance floor? I agree there's nothing better than a busy dance floor in full flow and the atmosphere that it generates but this packing the dance floor business winds me up. The number of times that I've read on lookbacks threads "so and so came on and packed the dance floor" Usually in my experience this is because of lowest common denominator records being played as opposed to the the DJ actually playing quality tunes with any imagination

Auctions Changing The Dynamic Of Collecting?
Thats not really the point mate, we're not talking about the same thing here

Auctions Changing The Dynamic Of Collecting?
It'll be interesting to see what this fetches, one went through ebay last week for about £27. About 9/10 months ago I missed one at £7.99 on ebay cos I forgot to bid, no one else bid on it. The seller immediately relisted it so the following week I bid £8.20 for it thinking no one would be interested - it went for £8.40! Doh

A perfect summary of the whole situation!

Auctions Changing The Dynamic Of Collecting?
This isn't really about the quality/trustworthiness of dealers like John Manship, its about a record that is generally valued at lets say £50, the record then fetches say £300 on JM's auction. This then becomes the records"value" for some people who also try to sell it for £300. That was petes original point.

Auctions Changing The Dynamic Of Collecting?
I agree, the world of John Manships auctions is inhabited by strange people from a different planet to me. These people have either more money than they know what to do with or are clinically insane To try and mix this world with the one that most ordinary collectors (well me anyway) inhabit is just wrong. Alternatively you could describe it as bandwagon jumping, trying to make a quick buck I suppose that goes on in all walks of life

The General State Of Our Beloved Soul Scene
Martyn, if you got to offending venues a lot of the people there were never there first time around and so dont get it in that sense. I'll bet a fair % at some nights have never done an all nighter. Thats not a dig before anyone shouts me down but the whole scene has been diluted down to accommodate people and increase attendances.

The General State Of Our Beloved Soul Scene
If you enjoy stopping in and getting old before your time then thats your perogative, after all its a free world, BUT FFS if you can and want to, get out and enjoy yourself while you still can - we'll all be dead soon enough. Back on topic, agree with many of the points raised and was vocal about certain issues in the past. However you're pissing in the wind if you think things can be changed, the many headed monster that is the northern scene has evolved into its present state and there's no going back or altering anything dramatically. There's just too many different people all with their own interpretations of things for any sort of unity, its as simple as that. Just pick the bits you like and enjoy it and ignore the rest (admitedly thats not easy sometimes) thats all you can do

Your Very First Exposure To Northern Soul And Decided This Is For Me
I'm surprised no one from our area has been on here and mentioned the Westfield Folkhouse Youth Club. A place that introduced numerous generations of Mansfield people to the music. Summer holidays 1974 (aged 13) went down to the disco there, not really knowing what to expect and up to that time being into the usual Slade, T Rex & Sweet. I'm not sure if it was the first night that it hit me but it didn't take long. The older lads dancing to this amazing music really gripped me, up till then I'd only seen girls dancing at school discos and other youth clubs. Soon I was hearing talk of Wigan, The Torch and other exciting sounding places, and I was down at Syd Booths spending my pocket money on the latest pressings. One record that really stand out is Johnny Sayles - I Cant get Enough, 37 years on and the music has never been far away, in for the duration

The General State Of Our Beloved Soul Scene
I'll bet you're still scarred by the experience as well? True though, and its only going to get worse as old father time marches on. But thats the way of things and in the long term everything will shrink and deteriorate( ) naturally The only solution is a cull, unless a good old fashioned plague comes along to speed things up

Hopkins Bros - Shake Sherri
Doesnt anyone know RS to ask him personally about this? It was related recently that another A Dyson spin of the moment (Eddie Daniels) was played in the mid 70s, could there have been confusion between this and the Hopkins Bros? Wouldnt be surprised either way, the amount of records that I thought were latter day plays when in fact they go way back never fails to amaze me

The All Time Mr M's Floor Fillers
The description "an m's record" has always confused me. During my time at the casino (78/79) I never spent that much time in there but as it was oldies only, wouldn't anything have been played from previous years ie any wheel, torch or early/mid wigan records?
