  1. If you mean Round Robin "Do The Slauson" etc then I'm reasonably certain that that dude isn't white.
  2. ha ha, totally like the beginnings of a massive dink job.
  3. so I got a 45 in the mail today which has been cracked in a way I've not seen before. It is cracked at the inside of the runout groove around about a quarter of the edge of the label. Looks like the doing of a brutal pressure stress from somewhere. It is still playable as the crack doesn't affect any of the playing surface but it does have a pretty epic gently rolling pressure warp, looks like the stylus is riding a wave when it plays. annoying, I've emailed the label to get a replacement copy, but haven't heard back yet. Anyone else encountered a pressure crack such as this before?
  4. cool, thanks for clearing that up.
  5. My Sweet Charles is red but can't remember if it's styrene or vinyl.. I am 99% certain James Brown "Hot Pants" is purple on vinyl & styrene.
  6. weird, so if both the copies pictured have the same run out groove info & identical labels but were pressed in Holland why would a UK store have to stock a Dutch press as a new release back in the day? Also what was the norm for dutch 45s? Large or small centre holes? I don't know if I've ever owned any dutch pressings with small centre holes ala that supposed Australian copy above. Confusing stuff.
  7. yep, Australian press which has been dinked. case closed.
  8. New Zealand press is quite different (or as different as a still yellow label stax 45 can get), so not NZ. Australian ones usually say Australia. The German Stax 45s I've seen didn't have the label edge writing in English. I agree that it is weird not having a more solid clue. That copyright control stamp is really familiar.
  9. I'm gonna learn something this week, I don't think I've ever heard of this label. What happened to the Fania label of the week? That could have been fun, not very northern though
  10. and here comes the can of worms Anyways, I always took 2nd Issue to mean a legit later repress on a single, an example could be Ronnie Taylor on Revilot, Nassau is first, 2nd issue is on Revilot. Or if it's the same label, Ramsey Lewis on black Argo which then gets a 2nd press on the brown label. It overlaps in some cases with the term Repress but the term Reissue should usually refer to a much newer press, Bootlegs are their own thing & usually span the whole timeline of things, they can pass themselves off as originals, legit represses or reissues. It's all terribly confusing really. Just try to buy originals as much as possible
  11. I have just gone through & removed all battered 45s from my collection, they are sitting in a pile & I'm trying to chip through it all & replace each copy with a as close to mint as possible upgrade, some of which are proving a challenge. I have a Christian Harmonizers on Hummingbird which is pretty hammered & a Montclairs on paula with gouges all through one side (luckily the slow "Dreaming out of Season" side), like it's been dragged across gravel, plays through but the clicks are kinda epic. There is that youtube clip of the Blind Lemon Jefferson 78 with the massive crack which plays through, makes me laugh. Blind Lemon Jefferson with a crack
  12. far out, i had no idea someone would try to boot the Bell Sound stamp, that seems like a lot of trouble to go to. Did anyone ever see it on another boot or is it a one off?
  13. i want that roy hytower 45
  14. I just want to add RIP here, a bit more than just a guy who had links to the Penny & Nickel labels with a radio show. Had his fingers in a lot of pies as far as Chicago Soul goes back in the day.
  15. two great Junior Wells 45s on Blue Rock
  16. I like the live Ramsey Lewis 45s, crowd is loving it singing along with abandon, awesome.
  17. how many times have you seen a C that looks like an L in someone's handwriting though, just saying. But in any case the fact that it is poor sounding on a major label like Atco would definitely lead me to question it's authenticity. If you are unhappy with the fidelity & feel it was at least graded wrongly I'd say ask for your money back.
  18. can you post up a pic of the label?

Yeah that's the one, I did used to play it out a bit. No longer own a copy though since I came to the realization that Candi Staton on Fame is the only stuff of hers I really need to keep. That unreleased track mentioned above has got my interest....

i remember kind of liking the flip to the stock copy of this 45 actually.
  21. seems like a good price, of course someone will probably say that it used to be a only worth a fiver back in the day but in any case, classic 45.
  22. this thread makes me want to check my old mailers
  23. I don't know about hot water, it will probably warp, best method i've had is lukewarm water + dish liquid + soft toothbrush for really dirty 45s, rinse with water from the tap to flush the grooves, then dry with a clean towel. There is also the pva/elmers glue method. Also if you have an old stylus & soften the stuff in the grooves up with the toothbrush method you could try playing the 45 while it's still wet because that can carve the crud out of the grooves too. Really though you're probably better keeping an eye out for a clean copy to buy off ebay or something if it's not a huge record. But yeah, the other things I mentioned have all helped when the VPI machine doesn't quite sort it. Good luck.
  24. It's hard to get real mint stuff on the yellow/white Jamie label (Barbara Lynn etc) they all seem to play noisy, even unplayed copies. Bad pressings. Also stuff on US Sue (Ike & Tina etc) is usually always noisy even if its old unplayed stock. There are other examples, Vikki Styles on Leno, I have (what was an unopened) a pressing plant box of those & every one has surface noise (the ballad side is slightly off centre too, but I digress). Heaps more too, those are just ones that spring to mind.
  25. i don't mind drill holes in the label, but as mentioned above, through the runout & playing surface bothers me. I saw a Bobby Bryant LP on Cadet in a store once which had been drilled through the cover, but not through the centre, it was off centre & went right through the middle of the last track
