Carvers, EMI Discs, tapes, compilation cds, mp3s, reissues, pressings, re-recordings etc. Of course if a soul event announces any format/any soul music before the event, you know what you are getting, (Soul CDs in the sun etc) but has it really become acceptable to not play original vinyl (If thats the tunes first outing) at a Northern Soul event today? Old thread, but have attitudes changed? Ed
  2. Heartstoppers - Brainwashed by love - Allplatinum Loved it, sold it, never converted to mp3, maybe it will be on a modern cd one day. Ed

Its like most of these artists from way back when, more about nostalgia and really just to say youve seen him live. Might be his last tour, who knows. Give the man break, play fingertips at a soul night, Nothings TGFMB in the car, and whistle Uptight at work. Actually I love his stuff like "I WISH, Superstition, and even Sir Duke' Looking for tickets now. Ed
  6. IM GOING TO TRY AND GO AND SEE IT AND JUDGE FOR MYSELF BEFORE IT ENDS. WELL AFTER ALL ENGLAND ARE NOT IN THE EURO CHAMPS SO ITS A GOOD EXCUSE........... Ed

Jackie Beavers - I need my baby. Cant see how this did not make the charts. Amazing. Other suggestions
  9. What a great record to play in the car, window down, a sing along. Dont be surprised though if you get reported for having a fit. Ed
  10. I realise that but the sax is so in tune with the singing, its like JW is singing into his sax and it comes out like it does. Not being a musician, Im not sure if theres a technique used or he is just unique. Ed
  11. I thought NS2007 sold that bad that 2008 was not an option. He must be mad or daft rich. Realistically if IL produced quality retro NS tracks (Wrong side of town etc), they would not chart anyway, so I dont know why he bothers. Its a lose lose situation. His best time was spent discovering tracks in the USA, and bringing them back over here. Maybe he should go back over there and call up all his old contacts and discover another 250 proper tunes that will keep us going for the next 5 years. Ed
  12. Just been listening to Junior Walkers 'Walk in the night', and I swear his sax (backing) is singing...................No I'm not under the influence, but does anybody else hear it or do I need help. Maybe its in other records also, any nominations. Ed

I saw Gladys Knight there in 2004, but it was a bit of a let down. Saw an add for a Ronny Milsap show (A N S L I T O S) in one of the lounges. Wasn't there a Northern Soul weekender there recently? It might have been advertised on here. If youve not been before, its a real treat, larger than life. Ed
  14. Theres always a record that turns up that for whatever reason Ive not heard before and I think wow, just like 30 odd years ago (OK there was more wows then than now). Its also a time now where tha age range at a typical soul night is wider than ever and therefore a bigger range of preferences. You get out what you put in. If you are doing 3 local soul nights/events a week, its going to be hard to keep it fresh. Maybe the answer is to travel far and wide. Oh I remember just like 30 odd years ago!!!! Ed

Not seen much downturn in record prices over the last few months, Is it time to buy or sell those rare records? Ed
  16. To be honest the cost difference of a winter holiday in Lanzarote 'without' the soul or 'with' the soul is next to nothing. The Tenerife gig is from what I could see, a big charity collection event where non professional DJs played for free. Nobody took it serious. Its safe, friendly, and better than being stuck in the cold. What more do you want? From Duffy to Torme, the music had no boundry. Just a good laugh and a natter between 'old souls' Enjoy Lanzarote for what it is, a chance to get some sun on your back, cheap booze, and (mainly) decent background music. Ed
  17. I thought it was Ann Robinson? Remember 'Love Fantasy' well from Cleggy. Ed
  18. If you had a pair of those multi shaded/cross over (Style 102) hoofs, you really were the boy. Red cherries for me, Im afraid, Army stores specials. Ed How about you lot Ed

Dont know how true the Temptations movie DVD is to fact, but its a real tear jerker. Ann Sexton - Godess - Fact. Just like the rest of life though, not everybody gets what they deserve, including soul singers. The cream occassionally stays at the bottom. Ed

When I have been over to Florida before, I have often seen 'flee markets' advertised. I suppose that they are the best places to find odd items as I can see many folks buying vinyl unless they are collectors. Even then there cant be many tunes coming from Florida in the 60s. Who was the dealer mentioned? Any idea. Ed
  21. Sorry the velours have the best version, no contest. Great spinner though, dont see it much now, although not sure where you get a spin in to most of the top 100 played today. In fact, there not much northern soul dancing action anyway these days (as was 73/80) with so many floaters, modern beats and Rock and Roll played today. Not that Im complaining as variety is the SOL as they say, and not many could dance at full pelt for more than a handfull of records anyway.(Me included). Ed

I suppose when you listen to the spoken intro from Bobby in 'Home is where the heart is' you get the feeling he shoots from the hip. Marvin Gaye, according to the book 'troubled man' was a walking timebomb, but I suppose brilliance comes with a price. Look at some of the characters on this scene. 'I used to be a warewolf, but Im all right nooooooooooow' as they say in these parts. Ed
  23. Just my luck, Im going to Dublin this weekend. Hope I can find a soul bar on Sturday night. Ed
  24. Your talking about needles in haystacks and every year the haystack is getting bigger. Its more likely to go into the archives of records hardly played years ago and long forgotten, and find a tune that gets a second chance, and it takes off. Dont forget in the late 60s and early to mid 70s so much stuff got found that lots of records missed the chance. An example: Sterling Magee - Keep on - Sylvia. With todays love of 'early dancers' it would go down a storm and maybe only a handfull of folks would recognise it. The list goes on and on and many posts on this forum have argued for changing the top 500 to the top 5000 so underplayed tunes get a chance. Ed
  25. Maybe you should invite the owners of Soultrain along for a free night to show them what you do etc. Tell them you have given them lots of free exposure on this site!!!!! I read a story ages ago that certain companies get paid for spotting copyright infringements on behalf of other companies affected. Just think of the fallout from this if all old record labels etc pursued this sort of thing. Okeh/Stateside/Loma/Mirwood etc. On the other hand I heard a rumour that a certain promoter was being chased for a few quid for selling unauthorised music, so maybe a line has to be drawn to protect companies image or products.
