Is This The Worst Record Ever Played On The Scene?
Funny thing about 'the snake', its amazing how many teenagers associate this with 'Northern Soul' along with 'the flasher' etc. Wait a minute, I'm also describing myself 30 years ago!! Weakspot, Falbala, going to a sharonette go go, reaching for the best, interplay, your magic put a spell on me, f**king doomsday, and best of all bar none YOU SEXY SUGAR PLUM, pure class if you can (could) shift those legs. Cant say at that time stuff like 'its an uphill climb to the bottom' or 'the panic is on' would have got me into the scene. So have a little mercy with some of the 'crap' as it did do a job even if it has no place on the scene now.

Tell Me It Is'nt So
From what I read about the very early Blackpool Mecca, they had so much stuff to break, sometimes a top tune only got one spin. Maybe Rosemary was of that ilk. Ed

Exciters Live At Wigan
Never mind 'blowin up my mind'. At 14 'Reaching for the best' was the best record ever to get introduced to manufactured Northern Soul. Brilliant, as were the exciters who did many live shows at the time. Ed

My Dj Playlist From The Weekend
As always forums are about opinions and this topic looks just about in the originators favour, however I feel that the longer the same records are played over and over, even great classics, the more predictable things are. Even if every 4 or 5 records a lesser played tune is given a chance the bigger the acceptable playlist becomes. With about 10,000 options including Motown/Stax etc, why stick to the top 500. Ed

Usa Record Buyers
Often wondered who would buy a record at the time of release in the USA like 'Triumphs - coming to your rescue, or Vibrations - cause your mine, etc. You know, records that were not really too Motown sounding but also not really listenable or danceable for an average 'disco'. There are thousands of tunes like this that obviously sold some copies, even if only a few dozen. Anybody know anybody who were buyin as new releases? I'd love to know who did, so I could ask them why!! Ed

Willie Hutch R.i.p
Real sad news but at least it appears that he knew how much he meant to the UK soul scene, which sadly many other 'greats' were unaware. 'Love runs out' - what more could you ask for in a record on our scene and his unique voice getting right to the soul. RIP Sir. Ed

Can Cd's Ever Be As Rare As Vinyl In The Soulworld?
Even if the CD was s**t rare and valuable, a DJ would not get away with playing it at a Northern Soul venue according to past threads on this forum. However, if the track to be played was never put on vinyl, how can you get round that? copy it to emi disc? Ed

Have You Seen This
Cant deny its a good old popular 70s tune. But prices on ebay dont follow any rules. The mug who got the tune in the end is probably kicking themselves by now. Ed

The Best Soul Pack I Ever Bought
They were great fun and sometimes great value. What did you do with the crap stuff? I offloaded about a 1000 at a record fair in Doncaster where a general dealer was covinced he could shift em all to curious soul fans who liked the labels. Best stuff, Sheila Anthony - Livin in love - Buttercup, and one Ive still got, Lou Ragland - What should I do - SMH (Never heard it played at a venue, but seen listed at +£100). Ed

Old Cover Up Titles
As a 13 year I was curious who sung a new record to me called 'aint no soul left in these old shoes since youve been gone' and took it hook line and sinker as my mates told me that it was 'Freeman Hardy and Willis' to the point of requesting it to a hyena laughing dj. Youth eh. Ed

The Strange World Of Northern Soul?
Seen this happen loads of times. Most general venues never last because the crowd stop coming due to the music is 'too rare' or 'too poppy'. As a rule of thumb, if the dancefloor is always full you've got the right mix, but if its not it wont be long before you get deserted. The 'right mix' is always determined by the crowd, not the DJ. a GREAT DJ works the crowd at any event and is not great just because they play expensive or shit rare records. Collectors get recognition for that. 'There was a time' might be the only record that dude felt easy about dancing to etc, so something like Sam Fletcher may be totally new to him if he has been away from the scene for 20 years etc. If you have a Jill Babylove - My Way or hit the highway, attitude you will be playing to yourself eventually. At least the record he wanted is a class 'overplayed' oldie, it could have have been 'Weakspot or Youre ready now' etc. Ed
