I'm not sure he was the Father of Northern Soul. He coined a phrase to help his staff sell records in his shop to northerners who preferred uptempo soul.
I doubt he liked more than 50% of what we call Northern Soul...since only 50 % could be classed as soul, and it's soul what he championed.
An icon in terms of soul and motown in particular, and should have registered the term Northern Soul so he made some royalties from it.
Strange thing is I'd rather listen to scratchy and I'm getting on life more than half his deep soul treasures..which questions whether I'm actually a soul fan above being a Northern Soul fan.

Its like a double header...play at a Northern night or a ska night...
20 days to go. Gotta be up at £7k by then.
Or you could buy a nice 200 decent OV collection for the same money with an odd rarity thrown in.

Just dismantled some wardrobes and found some 100 club anniversary 45s I'd forgot I had, and certainly never played...
Also pulled out a signed Rubin Molina guide to the low rider scene I've not opened since 2004 when I got it...
On the other hand I can't find my Oscar Perry I got what you need...and remembered I loaned it out many years ago and looks like never to be returned!

I think this place flew the flag...
As I worked abroad a bit in the 90s like Scotland Wales Ireland and India.... A mate was sending me cds of the latest stuff getting played across the board. No Ska or rock n roll as I recall...

Tell us more about the record industry.
Just my luck to have sold the original UK issue of PH as I got a less rate USA issue..
Obviously Jimmy H had the advantage of an enhanced metabolism when he made his songs...
Indeed the sky and guy confused many, including me.
Johnny's take is brilliant though, and probably fitted the era of uppers and downers, so to speak.

For sure my theoretical synopsis cannot supercede your practical experience.
Thanks for bringing a practical working example to bare.
By the way, I bet you had a ball with cream..
My personal fave, and one I bought long before I got a brunswick demo!
Ed
It's a simple enough topic.
If you don't know a record played by Sam first or nearly first or that he got popular, and you think it's good, don't comment!
Ed
Don't hold back!
But the devil is in the detail.
There is no detail.
I doubt Martin has even broke 0000's of records in any case, good or bad.
First time I've heard one DJ slag another one off, but maybe you are the first to break a silence!
Ed
Yes, I heard that was the case with records sometimes only getting one spin. Only went a few times myself.... Felt out of my comfort zone surrounded by mohair jumpers and drainpipe keks with bondage straps.....:)
Loved most of the playlists though.
Ed
YouTube is full of tributes to the Mecca playlists...if it was broken there, it will probably be listed. Personally I can't remember this being played in the 70s, but maybe it was a one play wonder
Too many to mention from his Snaith all dayers but nearly all with a modern twist, and as I recall new releases.
As mentioned earlier, this stood out:
Ed
Advance promotion copy? There's a clue..
Probably never cut an issue unless perceived demand was there...
Plenty of stories of kickbacks for dj's who plugged certain tunes and bigger kickbacks for not playing them ( Del Larks).
Each company probably made a standard number of promos. Hence why, as mentioned, RCA white demos such as Lorraine Chandler seemed to be everywhere in the 70s.
