  1. They might not try the steak if it was like an old boot though!!?
  2. BOOM! BOOM!! Mr Lenny!!!!
  3. I think you and I are on different pages of the book mate, perhaps even in different libraries! I doubt you'd have much interest in the venues I like to attend these days and I certainly doubt I have much interest in the type of places you like to attend judging by your comments. Each to our own, eh?
  4. You play records you don't like?? Not sure how that works. On your first point, what about records the floor might not know but which you believe in and think the floor would like, if they got to know them and gave them a chance? Or is it all tried and tested for you?
  5. Brilliant posting! I bought this LP brand new from the racks of a High Wycombe record shop in about 1978/79 and was also struck with how 'different' the sounds were to what I'd heard up to then as Northern Soul, though the guy who had introduced me to NS was originally from Grimsby, had been a Cleethorpes regular and was more Mecca than Casino. Great sleeve notes from ID - "one wonders exactly how long it will be before the record buying public will realise that they have been brainwashed into buying sub-standard product" ................... not much change there maybe? Though I must admit, among my favourites at that time were Tammy St John, Beverly Ann, Phil Coulter

Looking for "Running Late" on Black Beauty. Please PM if you have one you'd let go. Thanks
  7. The epitome of a gentleman, a wonderful person to be around, fantastically knowledgeable, immense fun. An absolute pleasure to have known you Paul.
  8. It's a state of mind, Northern Soul. At least, it should be. When I got introduced to it late 70s/early 80s, the dancer I most enjoyed watching back then was Tony Gordon from Bournemouth. Did he dance 'proper' Northern Soul? Did he heck. Did he dress in Spencers, bowling shirts or Fred Perry? No way. Bowie pegs, winkle-pickers, Tony Curtis hairstyle and big 50s style jackets. Coolest guy I ever saw on the dancefloor, whether it was 70s Mecca, funky Mecca, traditional 60s Northern. Never afraid to try new steps either. Just felt the music and expressed himself.
  9. I don't know what all the excitement and aggravation is about. One person's meat is another's poison and all that. Sure, not to my taste and I can't really see what the appeal is, but as one poster pointed out, would probably go well with the 'Popcorn' afficiandos and the singer does apparently have a soul music background. Probably one for the collectors, rather a 'Northern' tune - whatever that means. But whilst on the subject, how many tunes are holy grails amongst 'Rare Soul' collectors which clearly have little or no actual connection to soul as a genre really?
  10. Oz & The Sperlings - "Mo Jo Hanna" (Villa) £50 UK post included - overseas extra. Paypal F&F please (or add 4% to cover my fees). Just the one, left over from my listing yesterday. Was already a good price, but reduced for quick sale. Bargain price on this semi-known gritty R&B/Northern mover, getting plays and seems to be fairly hard to track down. Just got myself a white demo, hence spare. Mo Jo Hanna (Villa).mp3

  12. To answer the original question, John Vincent had an original acetate which had no artist name on it, just the song title typed on it. He named it the Just Bros. He sold the acetate on to Butch in the 80s. Butch made it a big part of his sets for many years. A few months ago, Mark Bicknell was working with the Secret Stash team in the States who have the rights to the original tapes from the Learner family who ran the One-Derful, Mar-V-Lus, Midas etc stable of labels in Chicago in the 60s. On the tapes was "Go On And Laugh" identified as actually being recorded by the Sharpees.
  13. You could have missed the best sets of tunes you've ever heard.
  14. Current demand on this superb gritty Northern dancer. Tough item too. Soundfile of actual 45 here - Action Time (Jim Gem).mp3 Scan below. £300 inc UK postage (shipping overseas will be extra). Please PM if interested.
  15. Got a soundfile for this?
  16. Makes you wonder how much the silly nonsense about the so-called find at the Texas record fair had to do with hyping the price up of the real thing.
  17. One for sale on Kitch's website: https://www.manfromsoul.co.uk/product.php/782/world-column-so-is-the-sun-tower-man-from-soul-rare-northern-soul-crossover-modern-soul-funky-edge-soul-and-motown-and-new-release-soul-vinyl-records-for-sale
  18. Would be interested to know how much this went for please? Cheers.
  19. What Tim (colouredman) said. Brilliant summary. It's far from dead or dying - and in saying that, I include the whole nostalgia, oldies thing right across to the more underground, so-called progressive scene encompassing clubs like Empty Bottles, Spirit, Soul Funktion, Black Bee, GoGo Children, 100 Club not to mention those clubs which have gone down the 'gentler' end of things, like Seriously Soulful and Soul Kitchen. It's just different nowadays and it's global. If you want to think in terms of 'a scene', particularly one revolving around vintage 60s and 70s soul (and funk), then maybe it's time to stop thinking 'Northern Soul scene' and instead think Rare Soul & Funk scene? Then again, what the feck does it matter what it's called or what it looks like? What's a 'scene' anyway? There's enough choice out there now. Plus, if you really don't want to venture out of your front door, you don't actually need to - the internet brings it all right to you, digitally. Kim, there's plenty of chances to say 'fings ain't like they was' and take the 'glass half-empty' viewpoint (and, let's face it, Northern Soul's always been packed full of them). I actually genuinely believe that there's so much choice out there nowadays that I feel I'm looking into a very full glass indeed.
  20. I could be wrong Paul, but I think Washpan came first (is certainly the harder) and is I think meant to be a better press - sharper? Having said all that, probably find I'm way off the mark!
  21. Ah ha!! Yes. Not having had either 45 for many, many years, my memory was muddling them them up into one. Thanks Ivor!
  22. You'd think after "covering Northern Soul for 50 years" he might have (a) got it by now (b) got bored with hearing the same old tunes over and over and tried somewhere a bit different? All a bit irrelevant and hopelessly out of touch.
