I don't think they are different recordings, but the Lundy copies are supposed to be a better press than the Julmar release. No idea which came first - possibly Lundy?

I think you and I are on different pages of the book mate, perhaps even in different libraries! I doubt you'd have much interest in the venues I like to attend these days and I certainly doubt I have much interest in the type of places you like to attend judging by your comments. Each to our own, eh?

You play records you don't like?? Not sure how that works. On your first point, what about records the floor might not know but which you believe in and think the floor would like, if they got to know them and gave them a chance? Or is it all tried and tested for you?

Brilliant posting! I bought this LP brand new from the racks of a High Wycombe record shop in about 1978/79 and was also struck with how 'different' the sounds were to what I'd heard up to then as Northern Soul, though the guy who had introduced me to NS was originally from Grimsby, had been a Cleethorpes regular and was more Mecca than Casino. Great sleeve notes from ID - "one wonders exactly how long it will be before the record buying public will realise that they have been brainwashed into buying sub-standard product" ................... not much change there maybe? Though I must admit, among my favourites at that time were Tammy St John, Beverly Ann, Phil Coulter

It's a state of mind, Northern Soul. At least, it should be. When I got introduced to it late 70s/early 80s, the dancer I most enjoyed watching back then was Tony Gordon from Bournemouth. Did he dance 'proper' Northern Soul? Did he heck. Did he dress in Spencers, bowling shirts or Fred Perry? No way. Bowie pegs, winkle-pickers, Tony Curtis hairstyle and big 50s style jackets. Coolest guy I ever saw on the dancefloor, whether it was 70s Mecca, funky Mecca, traditional 60s Northern. Never afraid to try new steps either. Just felt the music and expressed himself.

I don't know what all the excitement and aggravation is about. One person's meat is another's poison and all that. Sure, not to my taste and I can't really see what the appeal is, but as one poster pointed out, would probably go well with the 'Popcorn' afficiandos and the singer does apparently have a soul music background. Probably one for the collectors, rather a 'Northern' tune - whatever that means. But whilst on the subject, how many tunes are holy grails amongst 'Rare Soul' collectors which clearly have little or no actual connection to soul as a genre really?

To answer the original question, John Vincent had an original acetate which had no artist name on it, just the song title typed on it. He named it the Just Bros. He sold the acetate on to Butch in the 80s. Butch made it a big part of his sets for many years. A few months ago, Mark Bicknell was working with the Secret Stash team in the States who have the rights to the original tapes from the Learner family who ran the One-Derful, Mar-V-Lus, Midas etc stable of labels in Chicago in the 60s. On the tapes was "Go On And Laugh" identified as actually being recorded by the Sharpees.

You could have missed the best sets of tunes you've ever heard.
