The Gathering @ the Basement, Hanley
Gaye kidson Gaye has been a mainstay of the west midlands rare soul scene for many years and played nationally as a guest at many events. Also a resident at the most wonderful dark horses nighter in Tamworth she has been a trailblazer showing the girls can do what the guys do, but better!

A little information on our guest DJs; Rob Powner- (aka twangy) Rob has always been I DJ I look up to, literally! Lanky git. 😁 It's fair to say Rob has garnered a massive reputation over the last 20 years as one of the finest mod dj's not only in the UK but also in Europe. DJing extensively at a rare of weekender event on the continent and in the UK, including promoting his own events, wang dang doodle and his most excellent Sunday sermon. Your going to hear some top class tunes your ears have never been near.

It was the delays track indeed that got me looking at the label, thanks for that. So a vanity label of sorts?

The Gathering @ the Basement, Hanley
Just over a week away from our first anniversary event. Expect a mixture of underplayed northern, R and B, funky soul, garage and who knows.... The whole point of the event is to bring folk together, hence the name, Gathering. Different people djs and scenes together under one roof. Many come to hear something genuinely different and we encourage djs to play the what they want. The dancefloor and atmosphere determine what goes down. That doesn't mean you won't hear classics or great northern. Come and see for the sen's!

Thanks for the contribution so far, seems quite obscure for a label that put out so many releases, that's what peaked my interest. Lots are garage, but a lot don't have clips on discogs and many seems rare, any ideas why?

Paris tower records
Came across this above label, from Florida? I think. While digging online, never heard of before but is does seem to have a lot of very rare releases. Many are garage but are there any good soul, funk or R &B sides on it? Anyone collect it or any insight?

Just where is NS heading in the future?
That's the thing, I know you're sincere but with many the ego gets in the way. Our strength is we, never me!

Just where is NS heading in the future?
Mate when as the media ever portrayed the scene in nuanced and balanced way? if they call again tell them to funk right off. Whatever this scene needs or has ever needed it's not media attention. One thing old and young should agree on is the intention to keep it underground and not part of mainstream culture, that is the the defining element that's kept it alive so far.

Did James Fountain seven day lover change the scene?
Seems also to be a shift in tempo, or time signatures between the earlier period at the wheel and what was being played at the end of the wheel/ begining of the torch nighters. A good example is the okeh stuff, early wheel- the beat, rhythm ect opposed I do t want you more and sani Sheldon

Just where is NS heading in the future?
I think the thing that's been missed across this conversation is that the people who will be around to carry Northern Soul on, weren't around when it was at its prime. They didn't get to experience what most of you have had and won't ever get the opportunity to see, feel or even really understand it from your perspective When that then? Wigan 78😁 see other thread, torch 72? Tiles, 1964? Stafford 82? Plenty of young uns think the early 80's was the zeitgeist. It was ace back in the early 2000's at the Ritz and Prestwich. It's all context and perspective, in sure the south London nighter will be full of young folk who think it's now.

I say cultural affiliation.

Just where is NS heading in the future?
I was scared to articulate that as I'm too old, but spot on mate. Someone like Pete Lawson or tommo would have scared them all shitless.

Just where is NS heading in the future?
I'm thinking, your off the mark on this Paul, surely it's only a handful of people. Then I actually watched the clip and wow, more on the dancefloor there than at many venues! When do we have a time when this becomes the norm and if you're not doing it you're the one looking odd, scary, it's real cultural appropriation in action.
