A Cameo Appearance
august issue of RECORD COLLECTOR informs us that a selection of cds are imminent from the archives of the legendary cameo parkway label....could this been a softening of attitudes and a need for money by the previously resolute and stubborn owners of the catalogue?. if so, then about time....the people concerned must have had a reality check.....realising no-one lives forever and you cant take your money with you, even more annoying the fact, that they have deprived us for so long, of the tunes we want to have in our collections, in the light of the original vinyl being so scarce and in some cases, downright expensive. initially, a scan would suggest its beginning-of-era stuff, but hopefully it will culminate in the first ever legitimate release of a wealth of northern soul classics.

The Wigan Casino Years: Northern Soul - The Essential Story - A New Book By Tim Brown
there's been a lot of sceptisism on here, what with films and plays getting people's senses riled up. i find it highly amusing that comparisons with other publications are being made in the light of the fact, that this book is not yet on release and no-one posesses it to give a positive or negative view.....cum on people get real here. tim brown is as close to an authoritative figure where literal publications are concerned, as you will get. maybe there's a depreciation of what he know's because he is held in the same esteem as ian levine, and there have been plenty of campaigns waged against the latter.....how negative is that?. its easy to forget, but ian brought this scene, kicking and screaming into the modern world with forward thinking music so we wouldnt be reliant on oldies forever....aren't the rare soul rooms born out of this ideal?. tim's bible on valuations is always the first to be quoted, that comes from a wealth of experience and a lifetime of studying the scene in fineite detail.....and that's not withstanding the fact that john manship has always been there for reference as well. im sure the vast majority of collectors trust these guides implicitly. as a matter of friendship, i dare anyone to defy tim's ability to give as intellectual an account of the life and times of the casino as has ever been specified before.

The Wigan Casino Years: Northern Soul - The Essential Story - A New Book By Tim Brown
well, considering it states: 1973 - 1981 he wouldnt have taken on something as concise if he didnt think he could tell it like it is/was so my suggestion is, as with "soul boy" reserve judgement until you get the book. ive no inclination to suspect it will be anything less than evocative and informant...as for him ( or even me for that matter) being old enough...you'd be surprised....early doors?...mmmm...in a new venue (1973) how many people know anyone else anyway?

The Wigan Casino Years: Northern Soul - The Essential Story - A New Book By Tim Brown
well, i made sure that i'll be picking up my copy direct from the mill the day he has them, this is a glossy hardback so its going to fit nicely on the burgeoning bookshelf and i imagine that applies to a good many soulies. i was well impressed with neil's contribution " northern soul stories" and thats what good reading is about, it covered a good many bases, whereas, with this new edition from the anglo american stable, its in-depth seriously about the venue that's shaped all our lives...for the better i hope!. the man in question is currently undertaking an australian zoological trek for research purposes so you can bet he's been just as thorough with the northern soul angle.

The Wigan Casino Years: Northern Soul - The Essential Story - A New Book By Tim Brown
well the cats finally out of the bag, and i can tell you as someone who's been following this, ive actually known about it since the end of last year but, obviously its been kept under wraps for a good reason as it has been thoroughly researched and i can assure you...IT WILL NOT DISAPPOINT!. tim has spent a number of years putting this together so it wasnt just created on a whim. most recently i got to see the final manuscript prior to it going for proofing and publication...there was a slight hitch, literarily speaking but all will be revealed...there will also be a pleasant surprise accompanying the book, so place orders early if you dont want to miss out!!

Bobby Hebb Rip
as a footnote a line from love, love, love that has to be one of the standouts of all-time: "when i look into your soft eyes, i melt like candy jam"......TOP THAT!, TOTALLY ACE LYRICS!!

Bobby Hebb Rip
bobby hebb - one of soul music's unsung hero's, who had a brief glimpse of the limelight with a multi - million seller worldwide with the anthemic "sunny", revered and covered by so many artists then, and since....but to the world of northern soul it was even more greatly appreciated for the b-side hidden away almost...from everyone else's view...."love,love,love" a speeding express train of a dancer, whose verve and dynamism remains undiminished on the dance floors of the uk...it spans five decades and never lets up. bobby also gave us another great collectors item in "you want to change me" and this has proved to be a favourite request at venues, taken at a tad slower speed but still effusing great panache and style in his vocals and the lavish arrangement. his was a talented very much understated, yet the northern soul scene will forever hold up his contribution as a shining example of what drives us all. amongst all the covers of sunny, one that stands out , is an ironic testimony to the fact, even the legends appreciate a good tune....with marvin gaye and until recent years, his previously unheard and unissued version, you have an indicator of someone we all love wanting to give praise to the smaller guy for creating a classic that he obviously felt, was right in his bag....thats a tribute indeed. its already been said here but bobby, youre in a much bigger venue now...our world may be a colder place without you but up there, they're having a hot time!!....god bless, r.i.p. bobby hebb

Sour Grapes Or Madness
more money than sense is always a fair comment but its obvious there are folks out there who do have the finances, wether we know them or not, and of course its also a global audience as stated. we'll never get our heads round it...we just have to accept it...anyway there will always be loads of great cheapies outweighing the big hitters. to me, anyone who puts up a list, be it through the post or on the net, will have things of interest for a very reasonable price e.g pete.s, mick smith, steve jeffries excetera. when i log on here, i look everyday at everyone's offerings, i look at j.m., t.b., p.b., s.c.,....its a fabulous market place dispite the mind boggling obscenities that occur....you just have to see through the trees to the wood, so to speak. i feel that the main protagonists who compile the price guides really are steeped in experience but even they cant predict what a certain records value is going to do from one day to the next, even given if they are aware that its suddenly flavour of the month. they have a choice...they can sell it for what they have it originally listed at, they can double the price but still sell it on their pages or, go a stage further and auction...they then, can only envisage how drastic the want is....and for all we know they're probably as personally flabbergasted as we are. i'll chase an august moon if one comes up on regular sales or a gerri hall at the right price, which, of course is in the hundreds, but these have fetched considerable amounts at auction. by the same token, im fuming because i didnt react quick enough to margie joseph and bettye lavette singles at snip prices on steve jeffries in the last couple of weeks as well as syng mcgowan and frankie crocker going rockbottom on tim's sight ( probably well worn, but in the case of ton o' dynamite £ 75.....WHO'S COMPLAINING!!) i dont understand why, bearing in mind all the resources we have, and despite e-bay being there, people use it to sell soul records....THERE IS THE REAL UNPRIDICTABILITY FOR YOU....BECAUSE ITS NOT DEDICATED TO ANY PARTICULAR MATERIALISTIC OBJECT OF VALUE...ITS JUST A SALES PITCH. the people who do, obviously think they can garner even more there, because there are even more unsuspecting punters waiting to get ripped off. maybe im off the mark...maybe some of them are genuinely honest....you tell me or perhaps they know what we know....that the people on soul source are, on the whole, very astute, shrewd, judgemental and downright too seasoned to have a bag thrown over their head and be called a mushroom ( kept in the dark - fed shite!). anyway, thats my observation for what its worth.

Your Top Three D.j's Ever
IMHO, THE LAST 30 YEARS HAS SEEN THE GREATEST PROLIFERATION OF DJS AND IN TURN THESE EXPONENTS HAVE BOUGHT ABOUT THE RENAISSANCE OF THE SCENE, CERTAINLY SINCE 96, WITH THE RITZ, KINGS HALL, BRIGHOUSE, TSOP AND THE WEEKENDERS IN MIND.... MY FAVOURITE DJ'S: GINGER TAYLOR - IVE ONLY REALLY KNOWN RAY SINCE 2001, OF COURSE IVE BEEN AWARE OF THE NAME SINCE THE 70'S, BUT GETTING TO MEET AND ASSOCIATE WITH HIM HAS BEEN A REVELATION...HE IS ETERNAL, I WOULD SAY THAT HE IS ONE OF THE FEW WHO CAN RE-INVENT HIMSELF THROUGH EACH ERA AND HE STILL DELIVERS THE GOODS EFFORTLESSLY. I THINK THE DAY WILL COME WHEN TOD'S FAVOURITE SON HAS A COMMEMORATIVE STATUE BEARING HIS NAME IN THE TOWN. HE MARKETS GLOBALLY AND HAS SPREAD THE GOSPEL TO OUR EUROPEAN FRIENDS. RICHARD SEARLING - JUST STARRY - EYED IN THE 70'S AT THE CASINO WONDERING WHO THESE GUYS FRONTING WIGAN WERE. THE NAMES WERE REGULARLY IN B & S. ONE THURSDAY EVENING, WALSALL M.B.C. ORGANIZED A N.S. NIGHT AT THE TOWN HALL.......PROBABLY AT THE BEHEST OF MY NAGGING AND AS A RESULT RICHARD AND DAVE.E TURNED UP.....RICHARD EVEN BOUGHT A 52 SEATER FROM BOLTON.....600 SOULS IN THE BUILDING, WIGAN CAME TO WALSALL....MAGIC!!....REALLY GOT TO KNOW HIM AT TSOP AND THE RITZ ( MY ALL-TIME FAV VENUE ) AND HIS RADIO SHOWS WERE A NOT-MISS, HIS CHARISMA AND MAGNETISM CAN MAKE YOU LISTEN AND APPRECIATE ANYTHING KENNY BURRELL - FRANK WILSON ASIDE, HE HAS A FANTASTIC SELECTION OF TUNES THAT HE BLENDS SKILFULLY, AN UNASSUMING PERSONA AND, HE HAS BEEN A DOGGED SERVANT OF THE SCENE, BRINGING UP THE REAR OF MANY AN EVENT....DAYLIGHT HOURS EVEN BUT THE MANY WHO HAVE WITNESSED THIS, ALSO DID IT FOR ONE REASON ALONE AND I'LL TYPIFY THIS WITH A SINGULAR ANECDOTE: BLACKPOOL TOWER 07...400/500 SOULIES STILL IN THE BUILDING AT THE END OF 19 HOURS....JUST SO THEY COULD HEAR KEN AND SO ASTUTE IS HIS MEMORY AND EAR, HE PLAYED A TOTALLY DIFFERENT SET WITH NO TUNES REPEATED. ITS HARD TO BE IMPARTIAL WHERE OUR AMAZING DJ CLIENTEL ARE CONCERNED AND WE ALL, AT ONE TIME OR ANOTHER HAVE DEVELOPED CLOSE FRIENDSHIPS WITH THEM AND PEOPLE LIKE COLIN C., BUTCH, BOB HINSLEY SEAN CHAPMAN, NIGE BROWN AND THE LIKES ARE NEVER FAR FROM MY MIND....IN ESSENCE, WE HAVE A WEALTH OF TALENT AND ARE SPOILT FOR CHOICE AT ANY VENUE YOU CARE TO NAME. P.S. WE SHOULD ALSO LEND A CARE TO PEOPLE LIKE IAN LEVINE, TIM BROWN, JOHN MANSHIP AND JOHN ANDERSON WHO HAVE BOUGHT SO MANY TUNES TO THE ATTENTION OF NOT JUST THE SOUL FRATERNITY BUT THE DJS ALSO.

Name That Tune
1965 - imperial 66139 - double A-side with "my love grows deeper" valuation: varies between £100 - 150 or depends who has one at rockbottom so could get it for as little as £70 - 80....very atmospheric, very phil spector / goose bump record, personally i love it but have always felt that she was singing at the other end of the room and her vocal gets somewhat lost.
