The problem with discussing the merits of records, whether expensive, or cheap? We all have different tastes. Especially after all the years have gone by. At one time, all we wanted was to dance. But sitting at home with a drink, listening to tunes as an old person? Completely different kettle of fish. All you can do is recommend something to the other members of the forum. But you need to be prepared for negative comments, as well as positive ones. After all, it would be a boring world if we all liked the same things. Regarding auction finishing prices? I also enjoy reading them, and I’m very appreciative of the members who take the time to collate and list them here for us all. I totally understand the incredulous reactions to some of the winning bids. But at the same time, I have in the past, paid over the odds to obtain a must have record. So I kind of understand the rush of blood that is auction fever. I realise that we’ve been saying for 40 years, that the end is nigh on high prices. But I genuinely do think we have passed the hiatus. Some tunes that were on everyone’s wants list a few years ago, are now impossible to sell at their four figure prices. The big oldies however, just seem to go on forever.

It’s not just dancers is it? What about all the “look at me” DJ’s on social media? And it works too, they get on everywhere.

I love the Sandy Wynns, but it’s very tricky to dance to. In my humble opinion, that’s why it’s never been popular.

Some diehards are clinging onto a scene that, as Paul said, has run its course. It’s definitely a social thing these days. You can dress it up all you want, by playing different styles of music etc. But 99.9% of northern, for want of another word, has been played and replayed since the late sixties. But there’s no getting away from the one overwhelming reason for the decline in all-nighters, and not just in Manchester either. The age of the demographic, i.e. us. I reckon there will always be some kind of “scene” going on. The music is simply too good not to be loved by future generations. But it was a scene created from a period in time. And that will never be repeated again.

That's a good point Dave. My last lot of records were simply to play at my event. I couldn't really afford them, and as soon as the event was over, I sold them as soon as possible. I'm the only person that I've ever met, that admits they love Dj'ing. How often have you heard the old, "I'm not bothered about Dj'ing, I'm more of a collector, but people keep asking me." Yeah right, then they travel 200 miles to play in a little room to six people.

I never knew that was what happened! No wonder a lot of the records have sold by the time i get the list by email.

Does anyone know how long threads are available for on this forum? Had a go at the search feature, but I must be doing something wrong, as I don’t seem to be getting anywhere. I remember a thread on here, about the rarest of the rare northern records, and I would love to be able to read it again. In particular, there was a record mentioned that was by a female group. I know, not very helpful. But there must have been a sound file of it somewhere, because I heard it, and thought it was very good. I have never heard the record played out anywhere, so must be proper rare. Any help in finding the topic would be much appreciated.

I always thought it was an acetate, if it’s a cover up, it must be incredibly rare to remain undiscovered for so long. 😮

I wasn’t talking about washing the labels mate, and the kitchen towel is used to dry the disc, not polish it. I may just make a YouTube video on the subject.

How can hot water harm your vinyl? Hot water removes far more than cold water, and dries quicker. Never mentioned using cotton towels, I specified Plenty paper towel, which is superb for the job. And dries the record thoroughly.

I can’t believe the **** that people write about cleaning records. I’ve even fallen for some of it, and actually tried some of these ludicrous methods myself. Neadless to say, I’ve never repeated it. Hot water, fairy liquid and Plenty kitchen towel. That’s it.
