What’s the most you’ve paid for a record
I think it was about £70. The vast majority have been at cost price LPs and £20.

Precisely what is it...?
For me it always comes back to the voice(s), (although I could dance to instrumentals, they never take me to another level) coupled with an overall sound that pulls at my inner soul and makes me want to dance/sing and lose myself in the moment.

northern soul - the current state...?
There in a nutshell is the problem. When most people on here started they were not worried about OVO etc, it was something that was cool/dangerous and to some, not all, where they could listen to sounds that not many others new. For the majority who venture out now that is what, in their minds at least, they want to recreate. What about today's scene makes youngsters want to get involved when they can find these things elsewhere, especially when a few clicks on a PC can deliver the same music in their front room. They live in a world that is vastly different from the one we grew up in.

Oh dear
I think this sums things up perfectly. At the end of the day, unless there is an influx of youth who want to push the boundaries, rather than duplicate what has gone before this will be as good as it gets.

Poll: Version Battle - The Look On Your Face
John Edwards by a long way for me. Love his vocal and the overall production knocks the others into touch.

The blurred line...
I couldn't agree more, spent many nights dancing/listening to quality soul in various guises from early 70's to late 90's. Since then it has mainly been more sitting in the comfort of my front room. The one thing I can say is that has always been dubious sounds thrown in when things got too commercial whether at Northern, or more mainstream venues. The saddest thing for me is that very few venues have really been prepared to play the full range of what was available.

- RIP Aretha
We all new it was likely to happen but it still hits. This is a clip of Aretha with the Tops, which always makes me smile and showcases two of the greatest voices of all time.- hot day soundtrack
How about Give me the sunshine - Leo's Sunship- Most Miserable Records Ever
The coldest days of my life - Chi-Lites or Walter Jackson I'm through trying to prove my love to you - Bobby Womack or Millie Jackson- Happiest and most uplifting records..
There must be hundreds or else i'd be a right miserable B! Some take me back to places some just make me smile whatever is going on, a few of the top of my head are: I'm so happy - Prince Phillip Mitchell Overdose of Joy - Eugene Record My girl - Temptations I can tell by the look in your eyes (live version) - Maze This will be - Natalie Cole Make me love the rain - Betty Wright Smile - Nat King Cole Sausalito Bay - Grover Washington Jnr- New Marvin Gaye biopic planned
On a similar vein, did anyone see the autobiographical Marvin Gaye play, starring Dutch Robinson, in London sometime early 90's I think. A very enjoyable evening that I had forgotten all about.- Reggie Lucas RIP
"Mr. Lucas and Mr. Mtume specialized in a kind of regal disco-adjacent R&B, including hits for Phyllis Hyman (“You Know How to Love Me”) and Ms. Flack (“The Closer I Get to You”). In 1981, they won a Grammy Award for best R&B song for writing the Stephanie Mills hit “Never Knew Love Like This Before.” As a threesome these tunes stand up against any that went before or after them. I feel the need to pull some discs of the shelves when I get home tonight and celebrate such creativity.- Poll: Version Battle - Our Love (Is In The Pocket)
DB by a country mile, but as they say to each his own.- Sandi Sheldon boot or original
Cheers it's as I thought. The weird thing is I thought I'd sold it years ago but found a copy lurking in a box I hadn't looked in for ages. - RIP Aretha
