    Its both together, a couple of Jazz dudes (Piano/vocals and Sax), the version was recorded live at Montreux in 1969.

    For me it always comes back to the voice(s), (although I could dance to instrumentals, they never take me to another level) coupled with an overall sound that pulls at my inner soul and makes me want to dance/sing and lose myself in the moment.

    There in a nutshell is the problem. When most people on here started they were not worried about OVO etc, it was something that was cool/dangerous and to some, not all, where they could listen to sounds that not many others new. For the majority who venture out now that is what, in their minds at least, they want to recreate. What about today's scene makes youngsters want to get involved when they can find these things elsewhere, especially when a few clicks on a PC can deliver the same music in their front room. They live in a world that is vastly different from the one we grew up in.

    I think this sums things up perfectly. At the end of the day, unless there is an influx of youth who want to push the boundaries, rather than duplicate what has gone before this will be as good as it gets.

    John Edwards by a long way for me. Love his vocal and the overall production knocks the others into touch.

    I couldn't agree more, spent many nights dancing/listening to quality soul in various guises from early 70's to late 90's. Since then it has mainly been more sitting in the comfort of my front room. The one thing I can say is that has always been dubious sounds thrown in when things got too commercial whether at Northern, or more mainstream venues. The saddest thing for me is that very few venues have really been prepared to play the full range of what was available.

    On a similar vein, did anyone see the autobiographical Marvin Gaye play, starring Dutch Robinson, in London sometime early 90's I think. A very enjoyable evening that I had forgotten all about.

    "Mr. Lucas and Mr. Mtume specialized in a kind of regal disco-adjacent R&B, including hits for Phyllis Hyman (“You Know How to Love Me”) and Ms. Flack (“The Closer I Get to You”). In 1981, they won a Grammy Award for best R&B song for writing the Stephanie Mills hit “Never Knew Love Like This Before.” As a threesome these tunes stand up against any that went before or after them. I feel the need to pull some discs of the shelves when I get home tonight and celebrate such creativity.
