  1. 78 RS played Judy freeman "Hold on" and completely cleared the floor (despite it being an "oldie")….
  2. Thing is when we were young it wasn't as black and white as Russ = bad, Richard = God…..We were going up country to an allnighter and whilst Richard was clearly much better, we wanted to get in the place as quickly as we could and start dancing. At the time Russ was in the pack, not some dreadful DJ to be avoided at all costs…..it's only later that we really realised the difference in record quality.
  3. Its not really realistic to compare the DJs now to how they were back in the 70s. RS was streets ahead of RW in many people's opinion including mine. And RS also had a long run on radio, ran clubs like Parkers, alldayers, etc. Russ seemingly disappeared and reappeared in the 90s, plays CDs etc. But aren't these old Wigan guys more about working their pensions up now rather than a burning passion for breaking new music?
  4. 6Ts. Henri's Bar Covent Garden, The Railway West Hampstead, 100 Club, Last Chance Saloon etc.
  5. These indoor markets are nothing new, they were at the "old" Prestatyn too, a few years back. There have been a number of threads about the breadth of repro memorobilia doing the rounds, they were quite funny some of the things people found. I wouldn't mind if it was genuine 60s and 70s posters, dansettes, Russ's tea cup from Wigan etc etc.....but it's all "Made in China" and brand new.
  6. Do you want me to have a look for it?
  7. Love Hussle was massive for a few weeks - four spins a night…..
  8. It's a Russ or a Keith set and yes it was that bad. Stopped going in 78.
  9. Earl English not very good as I recall Ian,,,have one somewhere I think
  10. Whilst FB is useful, Soul Source is always the first port of call for soul. Have to say FB also has fascists and nut jobs who refer to Soul Source members in derogatory terms. They can be very tedious.

  12. ….or today even….when a lot of DJs ask where the gear is, they don't mean the sound equipment….
  13. Dunno if this helps an extract from my book: By the end of 1962 with no further hit records, the group signed with Marshall Seahorn. Seahorn had just left Bobby Robinson’s Harlem based Fire / Fury set up and had started his own label Sea-Horn Records in New York. A single “My baby’s gone / Return” did nothing to further the group’s progress (although it did feature a very young Gladys Knight & Pips on background vocals). Maurice Williams meanwhile would go on to have other singles recorded and released while on the road such as "The Day has come" on James Chavis's Candi Records in 1964, backed by The Inspirations. Meanwhile the Zodiacs had their own records out on Atlantic and Soma. Despite the somewhat fluid nature of Maurice Williams and The Zodiacs, they would both stay with Seahorn when he relocated down to New Orleans. In March 1964 Seahorn joined Constellation Records and took Maurice Williams there with him. Not long after settling in New Orleans Sehorn also partnered with Allen Toussaint. In the spring of 1965 the two men recorded the Williams & The Zodiacs "May I" for their Deesu production company. "May I" was successfully leased to Vee Jay, Constellation’s parent company.

Thanks Arthur, had a serious go at it but my snipe was too low....great track which I know you have championed in recent years.
  16. Just out of interest what is wrong with a Jamaican copy? As a 45 this record is harder to find than most people think - another one stashed in collections that is hard to get prized out of collections.
  17. Quite likely Paul. Very good double sider…..guess it has dried up….
  18. Fabulous Playmates - strewth!
  19. Weren't you looking for another of their records the other day? Is this the one on SA (blue label)? If so might have a spare...but not cheap if I can find it.

Yes an amazing price, it blew my snipe clean out of the water and into the next land! Shows there is still money for the right record - with two bidders at that level. Like Sandy Golden, time will tell who won it when they can't resist playing it out we'll all find out.
  21. Yes Steve once the quality control had been sorted out I ordered a box set, but its not a limited release. No worries some good tracks I am not precious about these numbered gimmicks…..
  22. When I first got the Phantom record in the early early 90s, I thought it was Sonny Craver, but it clearly isn't.

John had a minter at Victioria Record Fair for £500 - 15 years or so ago....that's where I got my copy too. But at the time it was not played or really known. Since that time it's built up a following, got plays etc. so I guess that's why price has increased....ATB Steve
