...IS THIS A RED LIGHT DISTRICT?!x...I hope not....!x
I tend to disagree, many records are of a specific genre first and foremost, Jazz, Soul, R&B, County & Western and pop of course and it is simply sales that make them popular. It doesn’t necessarily make a successful country record “pop”, it is still a country and western record.

Sorry mate, was trying to remember whilst writing, “British writers of pop music” is what I should have quoted.

There is no doubt, Billy can do soul just like Jackie can do pop as both have shown in their careers. Who would have done the better version of the songs you mention? Guess we’ll never know for sure. Lyrically, Haunted House and It Only Happens (lightweight it might be) are miles away from RLSD. Red Light quite cheesy in parts lyrically but it is a great pop record. I guess it is ultimately the delivery that decides what the are and of course by whom, the example of Michael Ball bing a very good example. Whilst the writers of IOHWILAY were described as British and pop by @Tobytykeit does do them a bit of a disservice as the fact is they were heavily involved in 70s soul in the UK with their writing for various soul acts and quite rightly recognised as such. the market a record is aimed at and the success a record achieves also play a part. RLSD was clearly aimed at the pop market and as we know hugely successful. That alone makes it the very opposite of what records we look for. The scene has always been elitist and pop records or should I say successful pop records were left to the normal clubbers, we were above all that preferring rarity and exclusivity.

JMAuction - 27/07/2022 - Results!
Connor Cagle? Its not very good is it. I didn’t really like it the odd time Nick played it. Once took it to a nighter for Nick for Sam to listen to with the premise of Sam buying it, needless to say he didn’t buy it although I think it was the only known copy then and it was a but dearer.

Never heard of this record. Any information?
Every days a school day, thanks for the info

Can you compare the two? It Only Happens for me is out and out soul music, production, lyrics and delivery. The other is simply pop for me.

Never heard of this record. Any information?
If you follow the links on discogs, the Enterplan link takes you to the one you talk about owned by the Abraham’s. I can’t see where they get the Philly address from.

Never heard of this record. Any information?
Maybe it was an attempt by the Abraham’s to branch out into other cities. It would appear it is the only release and of course the address could well be wrong and it is out of Chicago?

It was all those in normal clubs we went to niters to get away from for us. I guess it did have other meanings for other groups and was something adopted by soulies?

Might have gone for you but it was still a vibrant magical scene for many others. Tons of great records discovered after ten demise of your scene.

Divs has always been a term to describe “normal” people not other soul music lovers. A bit like a muggle who is one without magic (for those who know their Harry Potter).

Youth Club, the very term is often derogatory when used, well not maybe not derogatory but it often refers to the kinda a music you wouldn't hear at a proper event. When something cheesy is played it is often described as youth club sounds.

Me too I reckon

Of course Youth Clubs are part of our history, but it was the northern that was played interested us, not the pop. I haven't done moddy type or scooter events I'm afraid so can't comment what was played at those kinda events. Well I've been to a few mod nights but they were pretty hard core if you like and wouldn't entertain Billy Ocean.

All the events Sooty mention the playing of RLSD are youth clubs, slipper events, weddings etc, events that are of no interest to what happens on the soul scene. They don't influence the scene or any of the 25 fragments of the scene. They are the kind of events for "normal" people with a bit of cheesy northern thrown in.

Is this really the state of our scene?
You have turned a topic about someone into a topic about you again, you do it every time you come on here, sooty this sooty that, me me me me. Who cares what you get up to? Respect if what you say you are doing you are doing but why the need to ram it down everyones throat on a forum about soul music all the time you are here, which isn't very often. I know people who have done far greater but they don't spout off about it, they don't come onto a music forum and waffle on and on. Only you can turn a war into something about you! You are far better off just leaving all that somewhere else and stick to the music, it is after all what we come on here for.

Mainstream? I haven't heard RLSD at a mainstream event. Classic oldies, maybe club soul etc but not out and out chart music such as RLSD. I'm also very welcoming to new people on whatever part of the scene I follow and have helped and supported many over the years. But I am a traditionalist if you like and I find or reckon that records like RLSD will just encourage the playing of more records of that ilk. Anyone not on the scene have always been "divs" which you probably know, the kind of people as I've said before we went to niters to get away from. Of course people are welcome on the scene but why try and change it to something it isn't? Why join it in the first place if you want to hear pop music (I know the scene has had its fair share of pop over the years), I presume you join it for the music and of course the friendship.

You've done nowt but waffle since you came back on again

Talk about stating the bleedin' obvious. You are talking different kinda venues, horses for courses and nothing none of us fail to grasp or understand. The first one is of no interest to us, div venues and weddings, probably the kinda place you belong reading what you write, the kinda place RLSD belongs and they are of no interest to this forum. FFS 1000's of Dj can do what you say they can't, they do it every week.

Dean Anderson's Sound of Soul, Thursday 8pm.

are you serious? They are exactly the type of record and the type of people who play and listen to them that I went to niters to get away from
