  1. I had a Lisa for sale belonging to mate earlier this year ,rightly or wrongly at the time going price was around £50, the week he gave me some records to sell one was sold on ebay for I think £148 if memory serves. Out of respect I told him even though I thought it a ridiculous price, I held on to it eventually selling it on to another mate for I think £70, may have been £60 ,that could have been his initial offer. Both parties were happy with the deal. If the Lisa has people steamed up he also had a Sonic Wax Tribute that I was surprised to see was offered on Discogs for £50, I told him it was likely he had no chance of achieving that price, it is still in the back of my box, I've never had the nerve to offer it for sale, imagine my surprise to see one on ebay last week offered "buy it now "at £100. Last I looked it was surprise surprise still there. I'm well aware it's probably the ultimate Marmite record on the scene but if you think you couldn't make a bad record worse let me assure you you can. Before anyone questions my mates taste due to the two above the records they were bought on behalf of his wife, amongst the others he wanted to sell were Angel Baby Darrell Banks on Red Atlantic and Major Lance Ain't No Soul on British Colombia. The one thing that pleases me about ebay at the moment and there isn't much is apparently in what I thought was a pretty ordinary collection I have plenty of "original" "in demand", "rare" ,"mega rare", "under the radar" Northern records which despite their rarity are under a tenner, who knew?
  2. New to me, brilliant tune , thanks for posting 👍

I like both equally but would plump for Bobby if only for the shorter running time.
  4. At the start of the first lockdown in April I contacted a seller who had a record I was after that came up as unavailable in the UK. I thought it was maybe something to do with Covid so I contacted him asking could he let me know when he was selling in the Uk again. I got a reply within an hour, he was unaware he wasn't selling in the Uk, didn't know how the message had appeared on his page . A couple of days later he contacted me to say it was sorted and should I still want the record he would wave postage costs as a thank you. I am aware of the recent changes for sellers which was discussed on another thread which are apparently causing some sellers problems but it's always worth asking.
  5. MLIR for me though I do like the stabbing organ for want of a better description on tother side.
  6. I bought and have finished the book, my initial interest stemmed from being an avid reader of Dave's column in B&S and buying quite a number of the records he recommended further proof of which emerged reading the various top tens in book. I also was also one of the many people who received a tape off him as an impressionable 17yr old after writing to ask could he recommend any records as I had recently started listening to Deep Soul, later most of the tunes on that tape made up the majority of Deep Soul Treasures Vol1. Back to the book, it is as stated above a very well produced book, great quality, plenty of pics, lots of interesting stories. I was initially worried that the book would be very wordy and too much concentration would be focused on his political and lifestyle views which do take up a large portion of the book but not in a preachy or academic way. I found it to be very honest, I got the impression rightly or wrongly as a long time admirer of Dave Godin the book gave such a truthful portrait of the man that in parts I found myself actively disliking him. Enjoyed reading the book, learnt quite a bit, would be interested to see anyone's views who have read the book and knew Dave Godin personally, not I hasten to add due to any doubts as to the truthfulness of the book merely to hear the views of someone who knew him first hand and what they made of the book. Great read, would recommend.
  7. Personally I'm hoping the break will do the scene overall some good though I doubt it. I think for every promoter and Dj who calls it a day there will probably be two waiting to jump in. The problem I see with that scenario is what were good established nights and Dj's who had experience and knew what they were doing they will be replaced by people thinking it's easy. I know several Dj's and promoters as I'm sure we all do but the feeling I get from talking to them over the years is a lot of punters think events happen by magic not realising there is an awful lot of work involved in putting a night on, setting up and breaking down the equipment, promotion, in some cases getting the room ready, all taking time. Maybe some will have enjoyed the break and wonder is it worth the effort purely for the love of the music as we know very few are in it or in fact make a profit once the venue and Dj's have been paid. I'd like to think scene once re started the emphasis will shift to quality over quantity but I doubt that will happen. Maybe the venues that survive will be only too willing to entertain a Soul night needing to recoup lost revenue and I'm pretty sure there will be no shortage of would be promoters ready to put on a night. Peoples opinions of what constitutes a good night will always differ, for myself I've missed seeing friends that I only see on the scene and one venue in particular but I can't say hand on heart I've missed going to a soul night mainly I guess due to starting buying again ,being furloughed then retiring giving me more time to listen to podcasts, play my own records and chat regularly with a few close friends from the scene about the music. If I could have one wish granted for when things get back to whatever normal we see it would be for a soul club in striking distance with the emphasis on "soul", not being able to dance as I once did a convivial night or even an afternoon not necessarily at the weekend spent in the company of like minded people in an upstairs room somewhere playing music from every genre Deep to Ska ,RnB, 60's Soul, Funk etc etc , can't see it happening unless it's Wednesday Afternoon round at mine on the decking weather permitting, bring your own drinks 🤔
  8. I think you are right though I don't understand the logic in some sales I've seen. Since retirement I've spent a fair bit of time trolling through Ebay and other sales sites cross referencing prices on Discogs and Musicstack etc. I started a few months ago watching prices of records I own and have recently bought. A few months ago I bought Jay and the Americans Living Above Your Head, near mint in company sleeve, in the last month there have been several on the Ebay, one went for £28, a us demo went for I think it was just shy of £30 then low and behold last week one went for £125, reading the description I couldn't see any difference from mine which I think I paid £23 for. Looking on Discogs several for sale the dearest £49 near mint. Is it laziness, auction fever or just plain too much money. I think you are also right when you say I knew I was paying over the odds slightly for a record but there was just the one on left Discogs after seeing the others go. Fear of missing out gripped me so I bought it, as these things go a few came up on ebay in the following weeks selling for around what I paid and now there are two on discogs for half what I paid. Still can't get my head around the £125 for Jay and The Americans though.
  9. As above, well worth watching.
  10. Thank you for your input, hopefully that's a step in the right direction

Very sad, such a wonderful tone in his voice, so many marvellous tunes, R.I.P
  12. Hi all, I'm far ,far from an expert on these matters so hoping you guys can help. I've done searches on the net albiet not exhaustive as to whether this copy found in Lou's record box is a boot or not, I couldn't find any mention of a boot neither could I find any Matrix info though I have since been told there is one so my gut feeling is this one is going off the rest of the records in her box. Any help appreciated. In the deadwax is etched what looks like a small GK, ,small PP or could be PR, and 2-51085-PRI on the Giving Up side, 86 on the Booking side. Thanks for any help,
  13. Yes I only look on UK eBay, obviously I look at sales on here and other well known sites but I'd have to say the only other ebay I've looked at was Belgium as I had a few popcorn wants. I have bought a few things from Europe but at the level I'm currently buying postage from the US wouldn't make much sense though I might take a closer look, Ummm Jock Mitchell, that doesn't make any sense at all.
  14. Lots of people if my experience of ebay over the last two years is anything to go buy. Finances dictate I buy at the bottom bottom end of the spectrum, rarely pay over £25, plenty of great records around if you take the time to search them out. I can understand to some extent people getting carried away with rarer and more expensive records but when it happens lower down the scale with pretty common records it baffles me. My rule of thumb is check going rates on Popsike and Discogs which I've come to realise isn't gospel but a very useful guide, set the price you're prepared to pay and wait. The number of times records go for sometimes double what they could be bought elsewhere and often in better condition amazes me, there is no reason with the internet other than laziness to not be aware of the price for which records could be bought. Sorry to wander off topic I don't know about others but I'm finding ebay a less pleasurable hunting experience with lookalike reissues, dodgy descriptions, boots, the recent proliferation of lookalike carvers with obviously bullshit descriptions "from my own collection, plays even better than it looks" I should hope so it's brand new, trying to filter out these kind of things I'm finding nigh impossible. With sellers auctioning readily available issues of labels like Outta Sight and Kent rather than selling at "buy it now" I'll hold my hand up my knowledge of boots etc is not the best, I can spot the obvious ones and I'm getting a better feel for when I think something doesn't look quite right but the number of times after putting "original" in a search it's not until you read the description the seller tells you it's a 70's reissue, I've even seen boots described as "original second issue", more time wasted, I could go on 😴 Apologies again for going off topic ,anyone got a fool proof search description to syphon out the crap?

  17. Came across this fella on the path yesterday, second one water falling over rock edge taken from above
  18. You're right, I guessed as much after searching Rufus Thomas,
  19. I've just checked on a site I found, it doesn't list a gig in Birmingham that's not to say there wasn't one, it does list one at the Top Rank Reading where Thelma Houston does appear as support
  20. Hope this link works, prompted by a question on another thread I tried looking up the Four Tops Tour in 1972 and came across this site, could be of interest as a memory jogger, not sure how it is put together and how extensive it is, I did look up Rufus Thomas and one gig I attended in Manchester wasn't mentioned. It doesn't give full concert details, support acts etc as far as I can see but for someone trying to find a year they saw a particular act the answer might be here. https://www.setlist.fm/search?country=gb&query=Gladys+Knight
  21. I was at the Manchester one, it was in the CIS building, I don't remember it being half full but you could well be right. Al Green didn't appear as he was ill, I'm pretty sure that was why Phillip Mitchell was flown in as a last minute replacement. I do remember being blown away by his energetic performance. Not sure if Rufus was wearing a pink hot pants suit that night or whether that was another gig on the Blues Legends Tour at the Holdsworth Hall also in Manchester around the same time period. I still have half my ticket for the CIS show with Al Green crossed out and Phillip Mitchell written in, think I did that myself. I did see Phillip Mitchell a couple of years later supporting Wilson Picket in a club in Liverpool which was also poorly attended, if memory serves me right there were maybe only 100 people there which surprised us for a man like Wilson. On that night Phillip Mitchell had had an accident and could barely walk ,his set was totally different to the CIS one if memory serves me right, more ballads. I did get a poster signed by both Phillip and Wilson which used to be on the wall leading down in the cellar in our house, to my eternal dismay when we moved house I forgot about the posters ,returning two days later to be told "oh we binned them".
  22. As a tune I actually quite like it, always a sucker for an instrumental, I've had my ears opened to all kinds of stuff watching the Treme box set on Sky which if you can get it is well worth a watch, last episode I watched up popped Irma Thomas and Fats Domino, I've enjoyed spotting the well known(well to us anyway) artists in amongst the local musicians they feature. If you are unaware of it Treme is based around hurricane Catrina in New Orleans and what happened after.
  23. Sad news, wasn't a regular by any means but enjoyed some good nights in the cellar with knowledgeable Dj's playing some marvellous sets, I remember being pleasantly surprised on my first visit to see an old pub mirror sign for Bury Brewery which was literally a hundred yards down the road from where I lived a kid. There could be quite a few developers with burnt fingers after covid as people realise the value of a bit of open space, Manctopia has been an eyeopener and you cannot help but feel sorry for locals being forced out of the area as prices increase.
  24. Betty for me, the whole thing comes across so much more soulful, I do like Sharon's version though but given a choice Betty every time.
  25. This is true, well it was for me anyway, I'd had a season ticket for over ten years for my local lower league club, when my brother died I went to one match after, it just wasn't the same, I know the circumstances are different, I thought I would miss it but very quickly found other things to do on Saturdays and Tuesday nights. I think Steve's right if things don't get to something like normal by October the scene could possibly go underground with word of mouth events if a promoter can find a venue willing to take it on. Slightly different requirement regarding the dancefloor so just tuning up in a disused warehouse etc like the rave scene probably wouldn't work for most. then again maybe talc could become essential 🤔 . As for the hospitality sector and loss of jobs if it continues as is every day some job or industry seems to crop up that in the everyday run of things you don't think of, only yesterday there was a news item about a company that supplies stages for festivals like Reading and Leeds, the warehouse was full ,the owner said at this time of year all this would be empty, there must be tons of jobs under threat that at the moment are under the radar so to speak. I think the scene will survive in one form or another, the problem is as we all know we've never been in a situation like this in our lifetime and no one can predict what the future holds, as Zoomsoblue says, lets be positive, it's hard enough as it is without thinking about the possibility no more events. Only my opinion but the scene may even come back stronger after the break with people who previously shied away from rare and underplayed having listened to podcasts being more open minded and likewise those tired of the same old finding they have missed some old favourites, to quote Mel and Tim it could well be like "starting all over again gonna be tough but we're gonna make it".
