  1. Having just listened to Val's "Lovers Concerto" cover-up, fat chance of that (Kenny Everett "world's worst" candidate...) Couple of suggestions from me :- James Holt - What's Happening to Our Love Affair (pure rare groove - a Cleethorpes spins?) Frank Foster - Harlem Rumble Perhaps not twisted enough?
  2. Surgically removed on the advice of his tailor ...... have you seen the damage that those stains can do to clothes?
  3. Christ on a bike, don't let Rod Shard see this thread
  4. Four Tops "Seven Rooms of Gloom" - awesome
  5. I seem to recall being told that Maurice Levy of Roulette Records was a mobster, and that Calla Records is named after one of his trusted sidekicks, (Nate ?) who got his own label as a "gift". Not so much "sleeping with da fishes", as "sleeping with Jean Wells" Got a feeling Nat Tarnapol (sp?), Brunswick boss and Jackie Wilson's manager, was "well connected"......
  6. Agree with most of what Gareth and Marco have put on this thread (apart from the blind spot on R&B , of which more later....). Must admit that discussions revolving around soul "genres" and the Northern scene on SS usually leave me bemused. Labels like "funk" and "R&B" are thrown around like swearwords on here at times, yet when "defenders" of the notion of "traditional" Northern discuss actual records with artists and names, I find that Pete Smith loves the Skullsnaps "I'm Your Pimp", a broken beat on-the-one funk record, and Rod likes "Before 2001", which as Gareth points out, could serve as a template for the sounds that seem to be causing a stir on this thread. As for R&B, the ritual playing of Mickie Champion at Oldies events (usually to a full floor) has always made me chuckle when I think of the stick R&B fans sometimes get on here, and there still appears to be folks on SS who are in denial that the wonderful Bobby & Betty Lou is an R&B choon Perhaps we'd be be better off discussing actual records ....... PS Not getting at Pete and Rod here, merely quoting them because they have been the most eloquent and outspoken on here on what they regard as "Northern".
  7. Listening to the lyrics of "I'm Gone", I'm guessing that Eddie Parker hadn't finished his MA in Womens' Studies Basically, soul is just not as rude as R&B, though....... just the titles make me giggle... Big 10" Record Get Off the Table Mabelle (The Two Dollar Bill is for the Beer) Baby Let Me Bang Your Box Who Put the Dexedrine in Mrs Murphy's Ovaltine? And just remember this sound advice....... It ain't the meat, it's the motion, That makes your Daddy wanna rock..... It ain't the meat, it's the motion, It's the movement that gives it the sock.....
  8. Never heard the expression "snorts like a Roundhead"?
  9. New to me - what a belter of a tune!
  10. Awesome vocal - many thanks for posting, Pete!
  11. Nail on the head, that man! Could be a good thread, most bizarre incident at a Northern Soul event... (OK, cue endless listing of various crap records being played.. )
  12. Stitch one, pearl one, drop, kick....... Think it's Tricoteuses (I got my O-Level French, but it's been a long time!)
  13. PMSL, Joan ........... thinking of designing a badge for those long-serving members of scene who look so underwhelmed at niters - a big soul fist bearing the legend Northern Soul - Not as good as it was in 1974
  14. Harry, I think in your neck of the woods, you're sitting on a goldmine of underrated spinners - I nominate Col Denham and Gaz Simon
  15. Beeks, on a thread about OVO vs Boots, and progressive vs oldies music policy, you've chosen to have a pop at DJs you've never heard play on the nighter scene (because you don't attend) and attempt to boost yourself by boasting about booking a DJ who these days plays nothing but bootleg and reissue moldie oldies...... Is your posting an ego thing? Have you tried finding a discussion board about the Hadron Particle Collider, so you can show off your knowledge on particle physics too? Do you share the same therapist as Mr Levine?
  16. You are right on Betty Everett, unreleased (One-Derful?) side -think that's what he said when I went to ask at the Wilton. Great tune... Btw, saw the thread title "Roger's Betty Everett" and had to laugh.... now that would be a transformation, Tootsie meets Eddie Murphy
  17. What does Peter Seller's "Goodness Gracious Me" go for these days? Surely based on US original "Dr Truelove"......
  18. Stay to the bitter end at Middleton, Matt..... Robbo regularly gives it a spin. As soon as I read the thread title, the first tune that came to mind! Another one (tho' with a virtuous lyric).... Barbara Lynn 'I'm a Good Woman"
  19. Crikey, have they booted Mike Oldfield now?
  20. Itching just thinking about it...... Ike Strong "Your love keeps me dancing" Canine style......... Mixed Feelings "sha la la" Martini sound - Appointments "I Saw You There" Soul Sam's current set is just a rollercoaster of emotions for me!

Crikey, does that mean I've been dancing on Bolivian marching powder at Lowton? the ultimate decadent NS experience (edit: "on" to "on top of" ) Seriously, It's all down to different dancing styles ... I use it (and ALWAYS wear leather soles), like that really "slippy" feel under my feet. Appreciate that others don't, so always sprinkle at the side.
  22. Perhaps he thinks he can do without about a minutes-worth of computer-modulated one-drop snare drum at the beginning? nice choon, but needs a good edit, IMO!
  23. Look on the bright side ....... with dementia, every choon will be a "newie"! Chances will be pretty slim on getting playlists, though..... the DJ's won't be able to remember their own names, let alone what they spun
