  1. Tempted by Salvadors but those auction extensions often scupper me so I'd bid on Emmanuel Lasky too.
  2. Went to a concert in Detroit where the Temptations also sang to Levi who was wheeld on stage. Wonder if this is now a 'feature' - hope that it doesn't become so predictable it loses its emotional significance, or becomes too contrived.
  3. James Cotton 'We Can make It/ Day By Day (Pashlo 1016) The A side is a bit messy but 'Day by Day' is a killer. Confusion is maybe that there are several James Cottons, inclduing the actor and a Blues Harmonica player from Chicago. But this James Cotton is from Austin Texas. I think Pashlo was based in East Austin. The producer of 'Day By Day' - Danny Thomas recently opened a music museum in East Austin info below: The Austin Public Library, along with Council Members Raul Alvarez and Danny Thomas, proposed on Wednesday a project that would honor the legacy of the Eastside music scene. In the works is a public art garden at the Cepeda Branch, 651 N. Pleasant Valley, that will recognize the likes of Alfred Johnson, James Cotton, the Victory Grill, and the Skyline Club. According to the APL, most of the funds will come from private contributions and in-kind donations. Juan Cortera Architects has submitted design plans. Don't think I made the tape although I'm Scottish and lived in London then Cheers Stuart
  4. A great singer, from the greatest era, of the greatest city in the history of soul. RIP
  5. When Wigan was its height I got lucky in life and got a scholarship to USA. Chose Washington DC and spent almost every free day walking the streets looking for rare local indie soul. What is very strange about DC is that it has never matched Detroit or Chicago despite having a bigger black population. JG Lewis/Johnny Gilliam were part of the 70s DC scene and were still around when the Washington Go-Go scene broke internationally in the '80s. The connection was Max Kidd (of Al and the Kidd). Max had his greatest success as Trouble Funk's manager but had been a producer for Shrine Records and wrote for Eddie Day and the 4 Bars and for the Prophets. His side-kick Keni Lewis was the brains behin the Epsilons and may if my memory is right have been JG Lewis's uncle. (Andy Rix mght confrim or deny?) One of my favourite memories was getting lucky in a housing project in SE Washington and spending a day with Clifton Dyson. Also met a DC Blossom too. Convinced the real DC soul story has yet to be written.
  6. If any one has a mint copy of Smarty and the Dolly Mixtures can they PM me. I'm willing to pay over the odds. Otherwise I agree with James.
  7. Every time I play 'Stone Crush On You' I smile at OT Sykes - The Singing Dentist. Chubby Checker worked in a Philadelphia abbatoir. What other soul occupations can we list?
  8. .....the pinnacle and then Motown slowly passed away....
  9. ......the peterborough plot thickens....and its charming charcaters act out further fantasies of the imagination...still reading...
  10. LP is Dat Richfield Kat 'Two Are Better Than One' on JoJo quite hard to track down now. If you don't get any luck PM me and I can send you a CD copy.
  11. George Clinton for eccentricity and old Detroit. Freddie Butler - Sorry Shane you'll have to take the night off. Nelson George - great writer and has a wide soul knowledge John Anderson of Soul Bowl for rare soul gossip. Ty Karim - just to read the menu out in that husky voice Joe Frazier - in case there's trouble leaving the restuarant Louvain Demps of the Andantes whose met more '60s greats than anyone else. Shorty Long - you always need a joker. Sister Dawn from Lincoln - Never met her but need another soulie in awe of the guests.
  12. mathew - since i started this post and made the point about you being charming and a breath of fesh air then it was clear no offence was intended. Sorry i got the Barry White reference wrong. But he remains naff in every sense of the word (and a great soul singer). You can be both in fact many old singers are now very naff and geniuses. Keep on posting I always read you and will always be a big fan of the Wallace clan.
  13. Can I recommend this book by a guy who used to work at NME with me. It gets to the heart of the thread: 4 Say It One Time for the Broken Hearted: Country Side of Southern Soul ~Barney Hoskyns Bloomsbury
  14. Hard to read this thread - Rest in Soul NIgel
  15. I agree with that Dodge - the decline of vinyl as a form has had a greater and negative impact on '80s sounds. Many collectors didn't make the move to 12" either so a suspicion crept into the scene. The 12" became associated with the 'disco boom' and never won the hearts and minds of the rare soul collector. Shame that becasue there are so many good rare soul records on 12"
  16. There's a lot of people on Soul Source who want to hear and collect the best from across the range of soul from late '50s to now. Shame that always seems to get derailed into a 60s versus modern dispute.
  17. I second that emotion - sometimes falsetto can be too 'showy' but with Timeless Legend has a great strength to the voice.
  18. I left a copy of MInnie Jones on a train once. It was an unknown cheapo then but doesn't make me any less hacked off. In fact more so now.
  19. And of course Ray Dahrouge's who penned 'I Can See Him Loving You' brought out his own version around this time on Polydor - not bad either.
  20. CD sounds great Paul looking forward to it big time
  21. Agreed we need more from him and his dad dickvandyke and his lesbian sister dykevandyke. Great posts.
  22. Why is wpaulvandyke such a charming imposter? This is a positive post so no negativity please. wpaul always starts posts with 'nice stuff' - on soulsource this is immediately suspicious. He loves refering to soul stars that are perceived as naff - Barry White etc. He likes to fake that he has just discovered sounds that are already played out. He mentions Peterborough a bit too often. His dad is 'old' and 'can't use the internet' -allowing Paul to be naive on his dad's behalf. This make you think he is dad? So who is from Peterborough that needs attention? He rarely conributes to posts that he's not in 'control' of His best 'wind ups' are aimed at hard core hezbullah soul boys. He's great but is a total imposter long may he wind us up. So who is wpaulvandyke?
  23. No solid knowledge but he once came to Wigan in about 1974 this was after he had left Leeds to live in Los Angeles and by then the instrumentals were being played. No idea what deal he secured. My sense was at that time he was making contact with a lot of west coast labels and producers. It was around this time that Don Cornelius's ''Soul Train' was on US TV. I know he gravitated towards the show and that is where he met Jeffrey Daniel of Shalimar, who was a dancer this was prior to the recording 'Uptown Festival'. He was already moving from 'reproducing' northern to 'producing' original music - the instrumentals were probably an early and fairly primitive studio experiment. But the Mirwood Deal - alas I know nowt.
  24. Actually I've heard a lot worse than this - alas they were all on Cliff Richard albums.
  25. Just before I gather my ammunition is that a Hibs scarf or a Celtic scarf in your avatar?
