Tim Brown Quote In 96...your Thoughts?
Tim Brown said this quote on Granada TV in '96 and has always stayed with me. To me it's up there with "one small step for mankind" from a soul perspective....and as important as Dave Godin penning the term "Northern Soul" "The People in England have become the guardian's of lost American soul music" I'm sure most will agree (but I'd deffo include Scotland in the quote myself!) but just wondered what your thoughts are? Particularly be interested to hear from members the other side of the pond. Did the UK soulies stop it being forgotten and reminded Detroit, Chicago et all the heritage they had? And without the UK soul scene would it totally have been forgotten due to it's lack of commercial success? Just a thought on a pensive moment. Interested to hear everyone's slant on this.

Warped Record
On that note...is it an urban myth or do I seem to recollect a story about Frank Wilson (the record not the man! ) and an old photocopier (the type that used to get hot when scanning) warping one of the copies of the 2 that exist? I assume if it's true it was straightened! Can someone enlighten me?

Bloody hell I want some sushi soul! Great to see younger people into the music....Enjoyed the Oz nationals when I went too when there was a good young contingent there, and as much as I hate to admit it, it does make a difference!

Ric Tic Revue
Explains why I couldn't spot myself! Never made the Solo Edwin Starr Event...there was a reason which again I've forgotten! Do remember that T shirt though...I wanted one but didn't qualify as I wasn't there Going back to Hinckley, this is probably one of the most moving things I remember on the soul scene. Pretty sure it was a Hinckley Leisure centre (first?) anniversay nighter in about Jan/Feb '84. There must have been about 2000 soulies there and news had just got out about Jackie Wilson dying which I think Chris King told us over the mic, 2 minutes silence were held and you could have heard a pin drop. Still stays with me to this day that respect. He still happens to be my fav artist of all time his picture hanging over my fireplace. Respect to the soul scene for that moment!

Absoulutely fantastic night I was 18 at the time...went along with the Shrewsbury crowd...my mate Carl Heaps, Nobby Holland, Chris (Bearsoul) Morgan who all got a lift with Alex McBride if my memory serves me correctly (which it probably doesn't after all these years!) Was Sal (Gary Crook) there Chris? I remember buying an iron on Rictic Revue badge which I put on the back of my fav white grandad shirt...thought I was the bees knees wearing that! Also got the live Lou Ragland - I Travel Alone record of the night somewhere...will dig it out and post up if not done already? Been busy on adobe photoshop cleaning up some of the pics posted here...bit clearer now so hopefully can spot myself in the crowd! The crowd pic is great....like trawling through a where's Wally book! This Wally had a Kevin Keagan curly perm and moustache at the time! Honestly it was the fasion then!! Mark "Jonzy" Jones

Loughborough And Blackburn Videos
Finally got around to putting my old VHS tapes onto DVD and will eventually post the videos up once I've got them down to a smaller file size....hope to complete tonight so bear with me...just trying to find some free suitable software to do it! The videos are both from the 80's from the a certain well known public service broadcater. One off Midlands today (local news spot) at Loughborough Town Hall Allnighter (just after my 2 fav nighters had closed I think - Oddfellows at Leicester and TOTW Stafford) I remember going a few times, nice venue as I remember but only lasted a couple of years. The video chronicals the Northern Soul CESC vicar Rev Tony Clayton. The other is The Old Grey Whistle Test at Blackburn, I assume at Tony's Empress Ballroom although I went there a few times in late 80's it's all a bit of a blur (I wonder why ) But have to say it's probably the best video rendition of what the scene is all about, be it not perfect (especially bloody Mick Hucknall comaparing it to the early punk scene ffs, did try to edit him out but thought leave it in to stir some feeback lol) Anyway enough of my ramblings, Thought I'd give you a taster as I've mangeed to capture some images from said videos which like I said I hope to post up later. The pictures from Loughborough Include a young Ali Mayer and even younger Alan Walls! (both top DJ's in my opinion at the time. Respect to Alan for the long trip south so many times too!! ) Even Rob Smith looks younger! Alan Walls still DJ'ing? By the way apologies if they are already on youtube as I couldn't find em! Will post videos asap! Jonzy ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Loughborough Stills He was 50 then and we all thought that was really old Bet you can guess the record (sugarhill label) Nice shot of the record bar and a certain Mr Smith! Why was Adam always on before me at Leicester? Mr Smith smiling! So was I as probably bought a fav record for £2! Oh so young Mr Walls! Is this you? ____________________________________________________________________ it's time for the Blackburn Vid stills: We were all so young! Take me up to the top of the stairs - to depart with my fiver! Mr Hennigan smokin! having a ciggie too! dancefloor Still smokin! records before the internet! wonder who this is looking happy? Dynamic soul duo? 8am and not happy Ciggie outside...it was voluntary then! Bit lighter now I've sold a few And finally....So tell me am I right is it Tony's Empress Ballroom...like I said it's all a blur!
