  1. Think I may have bought some white label motown stuff off you in the late 90's?
  2. Civic Hall Whitchurch? I thought they were only bank holiday dayers?
  3. The Ritz for me were just exceptional dayers with artists on and a diverse play list from the DJ's. Carousel Ballroom in Longsight were good too but it was always pissing down walking to it from Pic station. Cats Whiskers Burnley had a fabulous dance floor and was the first time I heard Soul Sam play George Kirkby.
  4. Yes I went to at least two probably in 77/78. It was straight down the A49 from me so gave it a go a couple of times. TBH I can't remember many DJ's except Brian Rae or anything else except a good dance floor. Did it have another room upstairs? I have a feeling it may have been Bank Holiday Monday dayers? BTW I remember coming to your gaff many years ago to buy some white label Motown stuff. Dave Harris
  5. Hope you find someone. It's a great venue for real ale at a great price. I meet up with current and retired railway colleague's there a few times a year. Plus it's in Wigan what more can a boy ask for. Good luck.
  6. Believe me (drum banging) it goes on a lot a sports grounds. Having watched Leigh Leopards more recently than my football team Man City. I kinda like the way it builds up the game but you have to be there to appreciate the tribalism. It makes for a great atmosphere.
  7. Possibly. It was 1.50 ordered from a local record shop who had a list of imports they could get. It was on a blue Vee Jay label sounded really good too. But I thought the genuine copies were on a pink NUVJ label. May be it was a genuine re issue. It's long since gone now. My auntie actually got me UK demo as well when she worked at British overseas radio in Berlin.
  8. That was a huge wigan sound. I bought it off Tony Just for a fiver on white vinyl and sold it a week later to my mate at work in Rylands wire works Warrington for seven quid. To buy Ronnie Forte from Soul Bowl.
  9. My first was Don Thomas Come On Train then shortly after I bought a metal EMI Disc at Wigan hand written Night Owl on one side and Inky Winky Wang..... on the other. Probably 76/77 not completely sure of the year. Flood gates opened after that with I'm Where it's At, Forgive and Forget and I'm Cumin Home In The Morning.
  10. I'm saddened to hear of Brian's passing. Other than in M's I remember him at the Carlton Club Warrington with my old mate Keith Brady. Rest In Peace Brian
  11. For me the Kent albums were a goldmine of unissued stuff I loved all those oldies too. But it was things like Its Torture, I want a guarantee, Magic Touch, Chuck Carter Hey Girl He's a Lover that were just fantastic to hear for the first time. Me and a friend hoovered up as many as we could get our hands on especially from King Bee in Manchester. I think the last I recall buying was the Dore album on vinyl. Then I moved on to the CDs albums. Highlights being Up Town Down South, LA Happening, Old Town/Barry, Carnival and the Northern Soul Spectrum collection. Great thread btw Dave
  12. Just watched it 😢 heart breaking. The scene has lost a legend.
  13. Hardhitting TV the young kid was fabulous. Graham rarely disappoints and he didn't here surely an award on it's way for this.
  14. Cockwood Harbour Devon River Exe estuary
  15. Terrible news. That's so sad a really nice guy and fabulous DJ.
  16. Parisians every time for me regardless of rarity. Just an observation "Traditions" wasn't included on Kent's CD KEND 121 Abet/Excello "Uptown down South".
  17. The Hamilton Movement - She's Gone.......a truly wonderful track too.
  18. Great to hear Les is still going in Chorlton after all these years. It must be 20 odd years since I last visited his shop. Picked up some nice stuff over the years at extremely good prices too. He used to keep a box behind the counter with the slightly better stuff in but you had to ask for it.
  19. It's a fabulous insight into black music/record shops genres from the early days. My first experience was Ralphs in Manchester but by the time I got there all the good stuff had been hoovered up by the big guns in town. I had to settle for the odd Golden World/Rictic/Motown single. Ralphs may have sold other stuff I can't remember. But for me it was Soul record shop.
  20. Its poor to my ears as is everything else on the their YT channel. Looks like its creeping out though. I've already seen a playlist from a "Playlist Group" on FB featuring a Riker track.
  21. Up north for me it was all over after the Rarest Of The Rare allnighters at the Ritz. It was a fabulous and historically great northern venue. With the crème del a crème of DJ’s and sounds. No funk and no work around sounds just the best of the best proper northern soul. Great crowd and lots of records for sale and even the bar was open! After that in my opinion nothing touched it up north.
  22. Some great memories for me in those three editions Chalky. Guy's assessment of The Showstoppers was spot on. I remember watching them from the balcony near M's. It was also the first time I bought a record in the record bar. Tightrope on a Dynamo Demo off Soul Sam I was all excited about getting that at the time. The oldies/newies thing referred to really frustrated me back then. As there was still lots of oldies I'd never heard so as a newbie it was a real learning curve. Within a year or so I'd definitely made my bed in the 60's newies camp and it's still there. Many thanks for sharing. Dave
  23. The tunes played on Dean's show were absolutely mega. Does anyone know which aspects of the tracks is actually AI?
  24. There must have been a glich on that link yesterday. When I clicked on it, it was a video of Levanna dancing with a guy to Aaron Fraser. Now it's a music only clip of what is being discussed here. The singer sounds white to me with a style of 68/72 period. Google AI doesn't find a match either.
