  1. They are great vocalists Steve, that Kimberly Davis has got some pipes, and I think the other one is Sylver Logan Sharp.......I'm hoping he will announce any time now! ! Cheers Mark R
  2. Hi mate, year is a bit sketchy pal.............contents.............Little John, Little Nicky Soul, Ghetto Boys........I'll give it a listen and come back with more.....haven't listened to it for a long time. I have another which is just Keb...........Big Frank, Lenis Guess, Soul Set, Ron Baxter, Richard Anthony, Gordon Keith, Rose St. John............wicked.......and it's always amused me that the case has some stick on big cartoon eyes on it and the words "You Are Here"...............can't think why! LOL Cheers, Mark R
  3. The merits of this release aside, and talking in general, this is my feeling Rick............... If only peoples energy were more often channeled into creating new...... Cheers, Mark R
  4. Am I right in thinking that Guy's Goodies was a feature in Blackbeat then Steve? I'm interested because I have a cassette at home with "6T's Kebb" one side and "Guy's Goodies" the other. I thought Guy's Goodies may be a one off for the tape so it's interesting to know it was related to some regular thing in Blackbeat. As an aside, the tape, and particularly Guy's side, is recorded real lo-fi...........a deliberate ploy maybe??? Cheers, Mark R
  5. Thanks for the kind words Steve, it is something I really have enjoyed doing but enough's enough! ! Cheers, Mark R
  6. See, I love soulful house but wouldn't touch this with a bargepole. ......I remember knocking it back on Traxsource months ago! I find it really interesting that some folk on here criticise house and its merits as contemporary black soulful music but when they choose to like some it's more often stuff I think is substandard!! Cheers, Mark R
  7. I'm interested in what Jordi said, because what strikes me is that as a producer of such things you're damned if you do, and damned if you don't....so to speak. What I mean is, I totally see Jordi's point of why do it if it's such a direct copy, but I also see that as the producer you also know you're leaving yourself wide open for a flogging if you try to change it. As copies go, it sounds pretty good to me. Lifford Shillingford is a good vocalist, and Matt Early puts some good house mixes together. I would be interested to know who the band is Lee? Cheers, Mark R
  8. I shared it on some old Wigan attendess Facebook pages local to me, and I know in turn other local folk have spotted it! Cheers, Mark R
  9. Hi all, I put this together to share with some friends, so thought I might as well share it with all. It's the tunes from one of my Cleethorpes Weekender sets in the Modern Room......hope you enjoy it: https://starpointsoulboy.podomatic.com/entry/2013-06-24T12_59_28-07_00 Cheers, Mark R
  10. I've decided to knock my Modern Musings column in Soul Up North on the head after 11 years in the "modern soul" seat. I figure 11 years is long enough for both readers and scribe alike! LOL Anyway, I was reflecting, and thought that those of you with a broad taste or specifically into moder soul might be interested to see my very first submission from summer 2002. Quite scarry really because in terms of the record reviews it certainly doesn't seem like 11 years ago.......blimey! Things like the use of the word "garage" are amusing in hindsight.......I haven't used that term for years and looking back it was a poor term but was widely used back then to describe a genre of music being played on the modern scene. Anyway, have a read, see what you think/identify with!! Thanks for any support/interest along the way.......I have really enjoyed doing these! click to view click to view Cheers, Mark R
  11. Modern Musings In Soul Up North......End Of An Era! View full article
  12. Sad to read this Ady, I can see her smile now as she sat opposite me at breakfast on the Monday morning after her appearance at Prestatyn some years ago. R.I.P. Mary Love (Comer) Mark R
  13. The True Image is the version I have.......also on one of those early Goldmine/Soul Supply modern soul LP's.......along with Benny Rose "It's Only You".......now there's a tune!! Cheers, Mark R
  14. I reckon my first one was 1998 and if someone can list the acts from the 90's I can probably confirm that. Chalet's it was back then, and I was in with the Hull crowd.......not for the feint of heart I can tell you! The only time I ever went on the train too. I've only missed one since, in 2002 when my daughter was born (11 years ago this very day as it happens - Happy Birthday Hope!). I know which act I missed as my mate Mr. Stead got the Velvelettes autographs for me. He was the first soulie I called that day to let everyone I knew at Cleethorpes know that I was a dad! Not sure which one I started DJ'ing at, and I have had to miss some days since, when my daughters birthday has clashed, but I've always made it! If Ady keeps the date as first weekend in June I will never have that problem again. I ALWAYS enjoy Cleethorpes but the weekends go faster with every passing year!! Well done Ady.......you do have a great attitude to it all, which counts a lot for me. Cheers, Mark R
  15. I'll never forget the reaction of a large proportion of the NS contingent at the Terry Callier gig at Trentham Gardens............... But let's not go off topic and stoke up a problem that doesn't exist...... You'll all be smiling, of that I have no doubt! Cheers, Mark R
  16. Hi Mark, There will be a Northern hour in the Modern Room whilst Bettye is on. I know that won't suit everyone but in fairness to Ady he has taken this unusual step because of the appeal of this particualr artist (Bettye) to those of a more "modern" persuasion too. I suppose you could argue that it could be an hour of 70's Northern/modern oldies in an attempt to suit those from either room not into live acts. There's no detail of who will be DJ'ing then so it's not clear what you'll get. It's only an hour....... See you on Friday mate. Cheers, Mark R
  17. I always think you need to be SUPREMELY confident to cover a tune up.............it's a bit of an embarrasment to be caught out!!(albeit in a non too serious sense, to take Mr Thorley's point about the fun aspect). Funniest thing that happened to me was at a modern gig............no names, no venue........but a fairly well respected DJ from back the 70's followed me and introduced a tune as one thing, commenced to play it and I turned to him and said "no it isn't, it's blah, blah, blah....." Should have seen his face..........you've got to be REALLY REALLY confident to cover-up a fairly recent tune..........I mean something 40 years old you have a chance of getting away with, but something which is a fairly recent release is another kettle of cocoa..... Cheers, Mark R
  18. Knowing he was ill, I was dreading waking up to this news one day. An incredible vocal talent, the like of which is extremely unlikely to be surpassed. Sympathy to his family and friends, what a sad day for our music. In hindsight, had I needed to I would have paid a King's ransome to witness them at Trentham. R.I.P. Marvin Junior Mark R
  19. And there are those on the scene that would legitimate a vinyl carver ahead of a track which originally released on CD.......go figure!! LOL Cheers, Mark R
  20. PAP = Patrick Adams Productions, as already stated. Cheers, Mark R
  21. My understanding is that the reissue is legit. Cheers, Mark R
  22. You'll spend a long time looking for 4 12" double packs!! To my disappointment there were only ever 3 released. The 4th, to complete the package, was delayed for some reason which escapes me (Fish could fill the blanks if he reads this), and in the end never did happen. A shame when you've bought the 3 (and the CD I might add!!) to complete the set.............always felt like a let down. So many of these BBE things I've bought on CD and vinyl.......CD for ease of listening and vinyl to pacify my addictions........I try to avoid adding the cost up as it upsets me!! LOL There's something nice about the BBE vinyl packages.....sturdy, well put together....... Mind you, Dewhirst has trumped all that with his Tom Moulton Philly remixes.............CD box set............3 or 4(?) double pack 12's..........and then the 12" box set. Customers like me must be his dream customer!! Don't tell anyone as I don't want a visit from the men in white coats!! Slightly off topic, but I do like this idea of vinyl with download card (e.g. the fab "Lady" LP).........that's the way to go I reckon...............covers ALL my requirements without excess expense............perfect!! Cheers, Mark R

Which nmakes it that much WORSE IMHO......and then probably dressed up as a JAP import to hype it further! A sorry state of affairs! Cheers, Mark R

As a new music lover, I kind of don't care in a way. But part of me DOES care because I understand totally. There's just toooo much of this isn't there.....it's not really what it's all about is it?? It's a real shame all things told...and half the time it's being done by folks who TOTALLY understand what it's all about! Cheers, Mark R
