  4. Merry Christmas Chalks, nice work mate! Hats off to you for taking the [considerable] time and for having the foresight to document that period coherently and in detail - I can think of a few who would struggle, candles got well scorched, both ends lol. I'd be 16-17 when I started attending many of those nighters in the early eighties and while a bit of me will always be disappointed that I was too young to have attended WC or the Mecca, for obvious reasons, there's another bit that's eternally grateful for the fact that my taste in and attitude towards rare soul was shaped by those people and places in the early 80s. I loved the sense that something brilliant was happening and you were in on it which, I suspect, was how it might've felt right at the outset? Looking back, it could be a bit scary if you were a yoof from the sticks lol; people could be uncompromising and cut you little or no slack which, and this might sound strange, is a good thing I think. Call it elitism, snobbery or what you will but it definitely didn't always feel like an easy ride. That said, in a weird way that's part of what made it special and different and worth doing because if you stuck with it and 'got it' what you got was absolutely the best: music, people, places, experiences. Atb Phil

  10. Tell you what, if this pr*ck had thousands off me I'd be doing some homework then flying to Germany to give him some feedback. This episode just underlines how collecting rare records puts paid to rationality sometimes. We've all done it I suspect and the unscrupulous know it of course. Unless I know a seller that I'm buying an expensive record from, especially from overseas, I'll always ask for a pic of them holding the 45 next to a newspaper with today's date on it. A friend came up with that and I've done it ever since. No guarantees of course but it's one way of checking that the record is in their possession at least
  11. look into my heart (MH) SOLD Genuine rarity which hardly ever turns up (and an absolutely top-notch dancer of course). Conservatively graded at vg++ ... Which means a few very light, superficial marks; nothing significant at all and dnap. Flip has two biro Xs otherwise labels are great. Need some dosh unfortunately so best offer over £1500 by PM gets it. Paypal preferred but transfer ok too. cheers Phil
  12. Carl Carlton, Four Larks wtf! Incredible.

  14. JM auctioned mine maybe 5 years ago. Can't remember what it went for now. It's rare but does turn up periodically
  15. Such sad news. Really, really nice fella x
  16. pm me with details if you have one vg+ or better cheers Phil
  17. I hear you Ivor and agree with much of what you say ie there are obviously numerous reasons why fings ain't what they used to be. Just me railing incoherently against a scene that's changed and changing, inevitably. Atb Phil
  18. Precisely my point Joan. You used to have to make a real effort to hear and dance to certain records, which made them really special (to "some people" [sic]) anyway); this was one of them for me. You know, something really out of the ordinary, which you couldn't just stumble on, get easily or anywhere else. A bit like the scene funnily enough ... Ad Libs - in style anyone? Still folk wonder why there are 50+ events on every weekend, why loads just can't be arsed anymore and why there are suddenly 1500 'djs' knocking about (chasing and / or playing largely the same records). Really? Quelle surprise! Select from the following options: a. sit on your arse on YouTube; b. wave a big, fat wad at it; c. start a night in a pub with 25 in; d. play wtf you want, regardless; e. Post hallucinogenic bollocks in look backs. = bobs yer uncle (without having to look in a box or travel more than fifteen miles, tops). Too easy and does nothing constructive whatsoever for [what's left of] the rare scene IMHO. If that sounds like grizzling or ingratitude I'll have to own the former I guess but not the latter. In a world where virtually everything is there on a plate, it seems, the things that aren't still hold a strange - some might even call it bizarre - attraction, unfortunately. (Maybe I'm over thinking or over egging it? Dunno, possibly. Keep telling myself it ain't that important ... Then find myself posting on here lol). None of that is to knock Secret Stash in any way, shape or form though - if you think that you've missed the point entirely! They've done some fantastic stuff and more power to them

  20. Thirty years. Bloody hell
  21. I love the idea of collecting NM records. Only problem with that is it'd mean I'd never, ever own or have owned most of the things I've really, really wanted for 30 years. I'll take a Walter and the Ads that's 'ok for dj-ing with' if anyone is selling one. Or should I hang on for a minter?
  22. They're not if Joan's got anything to do with em! Princess of darkness. That was one of her preconditions George: "those lights n windows have gotta go." It's dark by comparison with most venues but we'd have it like night if we possibly could. Never mind the atmosphere, there's nowt worse than realising you're on a night out in a room with loads of other old, overweight, bald folk when you thought you were still at the cutting edge. Pitch black n dingy rules ok Len
