  1. Thanks for posting that Dave, it's very helpful.
  2. Laughing very hard indeed at that.
  3. Blimey! Just had a listen to the edits on Youtube. Pre-ordered on Amazon. I really can't wait for this. What an incredible list of tracks! Great work again from Harmless. Cheers John
  4. I'm yet again knocked out by Backbeats. I've listened to five of them so far and may not get to the others for some time as I keep replaying Dance Floor Revolution and Crossover to Soul. Top work by Ian on the series once more and a big hand to Ian and Sean for the aforementioned stunning compilations! Can't wait for the next installment. Cheers John
  5. Always loved Move On Up. Completely uplifting! I've never been one for instrumental solos of any kind but, whenever I saw Curtis live, Master Henry Gibson's percussion solo in Move On Up was a total highlight.
  6. Started listening and buying records regularly in '72, found out it was "Northern Soul" in '73. A bit later, a lad from school (not a soulie ) got a job in Global Records and the buying got a bit compulsive.
  7. Medicine Bend - Margie Joseph Always loved this, never understood why nobody else bothered with it.
  8. Motown Chartbusters Vol 3 Motown Memories Vol 2 This is Sue This is Soul (Atlantic comp) Jr Walker & the Allstars Greatest Hits
  9. Hell yes, it encourages new blood. Without some sort of publicity, where will the next generation first hear the tunes. I've indoctrinated my kids, I need help with everyone else's.
  10. The Four Tops and Thelma Houston at Manchester Odeon on 3rd November 1972. Levi's voice just took my breath away. The bouncing seats in the circle were a little unnerving for us 14 year olds! And, slightly left field...... Rockin' Dopsie and His Zydeco Twisters at Rafters .......other than me and my mate, the only other confirmed witness (to my knowledge?!) to this unbelievable show was Dave Evison; who also thought they were a bit special.
  11. I love, cherish and play mine. Once or twice a week for a couple of hours at a time. Did a big loft conversion a while back to make a music room. I buy a couple a month, but rarely pay much for them. I buy most of them from a particular record shop and have done so for about 25 years. I occasionally have a bit of a splurge on ebay when someone clears out a collection but have a couple of kids at university so have to be sensible. When they're finished bleeding me dry, if all this talk of falling prices is right....it might be a different story.
  12. All the early bird cheap tickets appear to have now gone! Don't miss it...
  13. That Jet 707 is wonderful. One of the things I like most about Blue Beat is the habit of sticking tracks by different artists on the B side. Fitzroy Campbell - Waiting For My Rude Girl is another of those tucked away gems.
  14. Them a Laugh an a Ki Ki -Soulmates John Jones - Rudy Mills Better Must Come - Delroy Wilson Hold me Tenderly - Hortense Ellis Rukumbine - Shenley Duffus Penny Reel - Eric Morris & Baba Brooks The Higher The Monkey Climbs - Justin Hinds & the Dominos Johnny Too Bad - The Slickers I'm in the Mood for Ska - Lord Tanamo Pempelem = Azie Lawrence I know Azie Lawrence is a love it or hate it tune, but I love it.
  15. And, how could I have forgotten ......Rufus Lumley - Stronger Really, really hate that too!
  16. Cajun Heart - Gotta Find a Way The Crow - Your Autumn of Tomorrow I Don't Want to Talk About it - Nancy Ames Always hated these - for very different reasons. Just tried to listen to each of them and really couldn't beyond about 10 seconds! Each to their own eh?
  17. Bobby Newsome is my favourite Jody song just ahead of JT's other Jody tune - Standing in for Jody.
  18. I Sky Plussed it and have listened to the first couple of hours so far. I will listen to the rest. I enjoyed it, the Wheel section was what you would have expected it to be. My Mrs commented that she knew every tune and liked them. Sam & Dave - Soothe Me and Bar Kays - Soulfinger kind of stuff section was good. If you were looking for something to complain about you would probably have found something. If you were taking it for what it was intended to be; you would have enjoyed it. Cheers John
  19. I thought it was excellent; even if the NS element didn't stand up to the level of scrutiny it'll get from some Soul Source members. I'd been listening to R4 this morning on my way to work so it just came on as I started the car on my way home. Nice contributions from Les Hare, Tom Smith and C P Lee. Roger shaped my taste in music and I will always be grateful to him for lots of the live soul artists I would never have seen without his promoting.
  20. Good news about the new show. It'll be good to have Richard on the radio regularly once more.
  21. Thanks very much for posting that. It's fascinating info about Edwin's climb to fame and all completely new to me. I loved seeing Edwin's live shows. He always gave 100%. I probably saw him live more often then any other act. It seemed like he was on somewhere in the North West all the time in the 80's. He was the only possible reason I would have gone to the Willows in Salford!

Not wanting to be contrary...but wasn't he McPhee? Big blues fan I think.
  24. Blimey! That's a funny album to not get. Have a maximum volume go at You Haven't Done Nothin'. That is a stonking tune.
  25. Amen to all that. He was the man when he was at the height of his powers. The thing that sometimes gets overlooked with Gil was just how funny he was. I saw him live many times and he'd always do a little soliloquy / mini stand up routine. Jaws - ain't hardly no black people in no horror movies. Genius.
