  1. Very fine book it is too! Really enjoying it! Many thanks. John
  2. Thanks for posting this, it's very interesting stuff and has prompted me to buy your book!
  3. What am I Gonna Do Without You was the first Chuck Jackson song I heard and I have loved it ever since.
  4. RIP Dean. I used to love my Saturday visits to Expansion where he used to tell me with great and erudite conviction which new tunes I was going to love and torment me for being a sixties dinosaur. Lovely, witty bloke who will be sadly missed.
  5. Soulfinger commented on Philb's article in Articles - Archives
RIP Aretha. The greatest female soul singer of all time. My greatest regret is never having seen her sing live.
  6. Edwin by a huge distance. A magnificent vocal performance which is right up there with his very best and his best is awesome.
  7. That's wonderful stuff Roburt. Thank you for posting. It's fascinating to see what was being played where and when in the states and link it when I first heard stuff over here. Lots of the slightly more mainstream tunes could be heard on Radio Caroline and Radio Luxemburg in the mid 60's but there's plenty of stuff that took a long time to reach my ears.
  8. I am very much looking forward to this landing in the next couple of days. Volume 1 was terrific.
  9. Can't go far wrong with any of Pete Smith's very fine podcasts!
  10. Hello Roger, email sent. Cheers John
  11. Laut fm Soul Allnighter - absolutely superb. https://laut.fm/soulallnighter
  12. Thanks mate, I spotted that one but someone else had beaten me to it. Cheers John
  13. Hi All, just looking for Kent City 002 - The Pretenders - A Broken Heart Cries Please PM with condition and your price. Cheers John
  14. I've bought more this year so far than I have in the last three. It's been driven by the impending reduction in income due to retirement! Can't quite seem to put the brakes on yet....
  15. And the wonderful kids at work made this for me (with the help of a professional artist - on Facebook as Smashed Hits: Broken vinyl artwork.). No decent records were harmed in its construction.
  16. Cake made for my retirement. My former colleagues know me well....Tasted lovely too!
  17. I saw Gil many times in the 80's. He was, without a doubt, one of the most consistently good live performers I have ever seen. I had the privilege to see him not long before he died at Manchester Opera house on his I'm New Hear tour. Though clearly unwell, he was fantastic. His between songs patter was back at his laconic, humorous best and though his voice was a wee bit gravelly, it was a joy to hear him perform again. Gil's lost years were a loss for everyone who loves great music. Thanks Peter for sharing this and reminding me of the great man.
  18. Looking for these three please. Cheers John City 002 - The Pretenders - A Broken Heart Cries / John Edwards - How Can I Go On Without You City 003 - The Other Brothers - Nobody But Me / Bettye Swann - The Dance Is Over City 004 - Charlie Rich - Don't Tear Me Down / Jeanette Jones - Cut Loose
  19. Only Smokey could've made this work: You only filled me with despairBy showing love that wasn't thereJust like the desert shows a thirsty manA green oasis where there's only sandYou lured me into something I should have dodgedThe love I saw in you was just a mirage
  20. I've not watched it. Never seen strictly before; why would I start now? As is my entitlement in the modern idiom, I reserve my right to be outraged and devastated anyway. Also to blame promoters who had sod all to do with it....
  21. Chuck for me, smooth, rich, full sounding vocals as always.
  22. Best wishes for a speedy recovery Dean.
  23. Les Hare's shop, King Bee Records in Chorlton is a proper digger's delight. They have a website too if you're too far for a visit. https://www.kingbeerecords.co.uk/kingbee_records_northern_soul.htm
  24. Brilliant set Pete! Dean Courtney is a thing of great beauty. You must be well chuffed to have it back.
