The Dimitri album was great although not quite everything is as it seems there. Mr Moulton even had a helping hand in that! Ian's quite right in saying that the Philly Re-Grooved album will appeal to a slightly older crowd as it is just a little less commercial in its content. Personally, I can't fault any of the remixes but then again I'm slightly biased I spoke to Tom the other evening and he was telling me about something he's working on at the moment (from 1967)... I can't say any more at the moment because he told me something just in passing that could lead to ...... well I just can't say at the moment. Watch this space though and enjoy Philly Re-Grooved. They used to have some great do's in Hinckley. Remember the Eddie Holman gig. Took Andy Rix over there before he had a car. We also saw Popcorn Wylie and I'm sure I recall seeing the Supremes there too. Like you say, 25 years ago and my memory is a bit fuzzy but great memories none the less.

Malc, You are so right in your explanation although the make of cigarette is not quite correct. It was in fact a Regal. I have that very tab end along with two pieces of the dance floor (still has some talcum powder on and remnants of a meat and potato pie on one piece only... does not affect dancing!). Was thinking about putting them on e-Bay. Do you reckon about the £12k region... seems realistic to me maybe going down to £10k in the economic climate? Thoughts please Steve

Had both the issue and the demo in my time. Sold many moons ago but I'm not bitter... much. Can't remember where the issue went but have a feeling that Mr Fortnum bought the demo from me. My memory is not what it used to be although the princely sum of £500 sticks in my mind. I know I bought it from Jon (Anderson) for £150. The issue also came from him around the same price. Like I say though... long time ago!

I had an original first issue of the checker board squares called cookin'. Wasn't clean at all. Dipped it boiling water a couple of times and the results were tremendous. Somehow the title mysteriously changed to Double Cookin tho

Hi jocko, I take on board your comments. Yes, I visit this site on occasions. I;m not the worlds biggest fan of Internet forums but they serve a purpose. They may give me an update as to what is going on in the big wide world of northern soul, they may give me contacts. What they ultimately give me is a negativity towards the scene that we all love. Why is it that the UK in general has to pull down something that is positive. The magazine itself is a positive input to the scene, even if you dont agree with the content. Please respond via a letter or an article. Why take issue with Levine's input, he alone has a vision where he would like to see the scene going, it may be personal but is self funded and as such, he puts his business, home and future at risk. This is a man who has been, is and will always be committed to the scene. If people don't share his views, then so be it although he may attract a needed new audience to keep the scene alive, something much needed within any underground scene. Every so often an undergrtound scene goes overground, generating new interest. When the fashion side of things subsides, a few devotees are left and become part of the underground scene, prologing the longivity of said scene, whether it be northern, funk soul Motown or Rock and Roll. What concerns me, on a personal level is your assault on the content and spelling of the interviews. I consider myself articulate but please correct me if I am wrong. Spelling mistakes do get through the net. I am not a typist although I do check everything before submission. I'm sure there are spelling mistake in this text, I'll let you pick them out. I have a catalogue of contavts for interviews and, politely put this to you. I'll let you have phone numbers of artists as yet to be interviewed. Can you spare at least an hour per interview? Can you record said interveiw and transcribe it to fit in with magazine deadlines, some of which may be very tight. Bearing in mind the short notice, can you get together the notes you need for said interview, bearing in mind it may be someone you know nothing about. Most of all, are you prepared to do research, pay for and conduct the interview, listen to and tyoe up after much rewinding and editing, said interview. If your answer is yes, the please step in and take my place. I have a day job. I have a radio show which I put together, all of which take time. Seriously, if you can take this on and guarantee that you will get copy in on time and of relevence to the issue, then please step in. I have been writing for the magazine for a long time now and would be happy to hand over the cap. Do you want to wear that cap?

I have to agree with everything Rob and Karen have said. I'm, lucky, or unlucky depending on your view, to have had insider information on this event from the moment it was mentioned on the forum. Can I just confirm what Rob has said: the event was cancelled by the promoters and not by the Palais. Clarence, Eric and Anthony had little or no contact with the promoters other than constantly being promised a 50% deposit on the gig. I speak to Anthony on a fairly regular basis and he had concerns from the start. Eric, who posted on this forums was a little more forgiving. Days passed and still no deposit was received. ever the sceptic, I still sent a cheque hoping the gig would come off but I knew deep down from the artists response that it wouldn't. Again, as Rob has made clear, the statistics don't add up. The charge of LAI alone did not equate to a £15 ticket price with 1500 people through the door. Any promoter (and I'm not one) would also aim to make money for unexpected costs at least, not just to break even. Aiming to break even = losing money. I could go on but I won't. All I hope is that those who have paid money get a full refund as far as the gig goes. Hotels, flights and time booked off work will be lost. Hopefully this will be a lesson to any other budding promoter. Leave it to those with experience and, believe me, even they can suffer problems, losses etc. Little Anthony and the guys will come to the UK but it will be at an event which can fulfill their requests, funding etc. What would be appreciated by most on this forum is an honest account of what went wrong from the promoters, not just a pre-programmed apology which is not the truth.

Maybe this could quash the rumours as even I have been seemingly misinformation; The following is an e-mail sent to Paul at Goldmine who reported that the copy for auction was Kenny Burrell's. I disagreed but please read the reply Hi Steve, I actually just checked with John on my article, and this copy is the Kenny Burrell copy and not the third one to which you refer. But thanks for alerting me to the possible inaccuracies. I do very much appreciate it. It was good to go back and check with John to make sure I had everything right.
