  1. Here's a chance for Philly soul fans to ask a question to the legendary Weldon Arthur McDougal 111: In the next issue of Manifesto, we are interviewing Weldon McDougal. It would be lengthy in any way as the guy can talk. I thought it would be nice to let everyone have a bite of the cherry and ask a question. please put your name (user or normal) and your question, and it will be put to Weldon within the next 5 days and then printed in the magazine. He is a wealth of information as I'm sure the likes of Joh Anderson and Kev Roberts will confirm. Your questions please and of course, individuals and Soul Source will be mentioned Steve
  2. Hi Paul, Only just seen this. There was a book that came out about 3 years ago called "Take me to the dance" which basically listed all the acts that had appeared at the Gliderdrome. I have a copy in the loft so I'll drag it down and check because if the Major was going to appear anywhere in Boston, it would have to be the Glider Steve
  3. The Dimitri album was great although not quite everything is as it seems there. Mr Moulton even had a helping hand in that! Ian's quite right in saying that the Philly Re-Grooved album will appeal to a slightly older crowd as it is just a little less commercial in its content. Personally, I can't fault any of the remixes but then again I'm slightly biased I spoke to Tom the other evening and he was telling me about something he's working on at the moment (from 1967)... I can't say any more at the moment because he told me something just in passing that could lead to ...... well I just can't say at the moment. Watch this space though and enjoy Philly Re-Grooved. Steve
  4. They used to have some great do's in Hinckley. Remember the Eddie Holman gig. Took Andy Rix over there before he had a car. We also saw Popcorn Wylie and I'm sure I recall seeing the Supremes there too. Like you say, 25 years ago and my memory is a bit fuzzy but great memories none the less.
  5. Malc, You are so right in your explanation although the make of cigarette is not quite correct. It was in fact a Regal. I have that very tab end along with two pieces of the dance floor (still has some talcum powder on and remnants of a meat and potato pie on one piece only... does not affect dancing!). Was thinking about putting them on e-Bay. Do you reckon about the £12k region... seems realistic to me maybe going down to £10k in the economic climate? Thoughts please Steve

Ian, You know you're gonna find lots of goodies at Tom's apartment. You'll also have to take a portable hard drive too as he does most of his work at home now. Do me a favour matey and take him a copy of Neil Rushton's book. It'll save me a fortune in postage. When's the CD out? Steve
  7. Get your coat and your suitcase Steve. She's actually a lovely woman and can sing far better than many others. The only problem is she's white, which isn't a problem for me. You have a song written by the legendary HB Barnum, a perfect dancer, catchy lyrics and a rare label commanding quite a sum for the original 45. I've said enough. Now what flight are you on Steve coz I'll pack my bags too LOL

Watch out for Eli interview in next copy of Manifesto!
  11. Hasn't this just been re-issued. Check out Crazy Beats website. Album only I thought although I'm sure Mr Levine had a 45 at one point. Certainly getting plays again because of the funky slant on things courtesy of Sam and Co.
  12. Had both the issue and the demo in my time. Sold many moons ago but I'm not bitter... much. Can't remember where the issue went but have a feeling that Mr Fortnum bought the demo from me. My memory is not what it used to be although the princely sum of £500 sticks in my mind. I know I bought it from Jon (Anderson) for £150. The issue also came from him around the same price. Like I say though... long time ago!
  13. I had an original first issue of the checker board squares called cookin'. Wasn't clean at all. Dipped it boiling water a couple of times and the results were tremendous. Somehow the title mysteriously changed to Double Cookin tho
  14. Ray pollard was in Ghostbusters :-)
  15. How dare anyone (Trouble) suggest that a certain individual (Levine) has no relevance to the scene. Anyone who has listened to, danced to and bought anything to do with soul music is relevant. I would not have the audacity to disrespect any individual otherwise no matter what status. Stop this nonsense now.
  16. Then the job is yours! Contact me for details. PM for me for a star if necessary. Job is yours but you must stick by it as I have done for the last 9 + years. Please confiirm that you will give it 100 percent commitment. Please also confirm that you have contact details for the future unterviews. Whatv is said subsequently is down to you.. I relenquish any responsiblility to the magazine after the September issue.
  17. lets all come together under one roof.
  18. FYI, there are 6 mistakes in the text. Have you spotted them?
  19. Hi jocko, I take on board your comments. Yes, I visit this site on occasions. I;m not the worlds biggest fan of Internet forums but they serve a purpose. They may give me an update as to what is going on in the big wide world of northern soul, they may give me contacts. What they ultimately give me is a negativity towards the scene that we all love. Why is it that the UK in general has to pull down something that is positive. The magazine itself is a positive input to the scene, even if you dont agree with the content. Please respond via a letter or an article. Why take issue with Levine's input, he alone has a vision where he would like to see the scene going, it may be personal but is self funded and as such, he puts his business, home and future at risk. This is a man who has been, is and will always be committed to the scene. If people don't share his views, then so be it although he may attract a needed new audience to keep the scene alive, something much needed within any underground scene. Every so often an undergrtound scene goes overground, generating new interest. When the fashion side of things subsides, a few devotees are left and become part of the underground scene, prologing the longivity of said scene, whether it be northern, funk soul Motown or Rock and Roll. What concerns me, on a personal level is your assault on the content and spelling of the interviews. I consider myself articulate but please correct me if I am wrong. Spelling mistakes do get through the net. I am not a typist although I do check everything before submission. I'm sure there are spelling mistake in this text, I'll let you pick them out. I have a catalogue of contavts for interviews and, politely put this to you. I'll let you have phone numbers of artists as yet to be interviewed. Can you spare at least an hour per interview? Can you record said interveiw and transcribe it to fit in with magazine deadlines, some of which may be very tight. Bearing in mind the short notice, can you get together the notes you need for said interview, bearing in mind it may be someone you know nothing about. Most of all, are you prepared to do research, pay for and conduct the interview, listen to and tyoe up after much rewinding and editing, said interview. If your answer is yes, the please step in and take my place. I have a day job. I have a radio show which I put together, all of which take time. Seriously, if you can take this on and guarantee that you will get copy in on time and of relevence to the issue, then please step in. I have been writing for the magazine for a long time now and would be happy to hand over the cap. Do you want to wear that cap?
  20. Bickering, backstabbing, back biting and bitching. Long live the camaraderie of the soul scene .... I didn't want to get drawn into this but.... Isn't what is going on in this thread just what Tim and indeed Sam do in their columns, albeit very childish? Saying nowt more. Simple as
  21. I have to agree with everything Rob and Karen have said. I'm, lucky, or unlucky depending on your view, to have had insider information on this event from the moment it was mentioned on the forum. Can I just confirm what Rob has said: the event was cancelled by the promoters and not by the Palais. Clarence, Eric and Anthony had little or no contact with the promoters other than constantly being promised a 50% deposit on the gig. I speak to Anthony on a fairly regular basis and he had concerns from the start. Eric, who posted on this forums was a little more forgiving. Days passed and still no deposit was received. ever the sceptic, I still sent a cheque hoping the gig would come off but I knew deep down from the artists response that it wouldn't. Again, as Rob has made clear, the statistics don't add up. The charge of LAI alone did not equate to a £15 ticket price with 1500 people through the door. Any promoter (and I'm not one) would also aim to make money for unexpected costs at least, not just to break even. Aiming to break even = losing money. I could go on but I won't. All I hope is that those who have paid money get a full refund as far as the gig goes. Hotels, flights and time booked off work will be lost. Hopefully this will be a lesson to any other budding promoter. Leave it to those with experience and, believe me, even they can suffer problems, losses etc. Little Anthony and the guys will come to the UK but it will be at an event which can fulfill their requests, funding etc. What would be appreciated by most on this forum is an honest account of what went wrong from the promoters, not just a pre-programmed apology which is not the truth.
  22. Re Frank Wilson. Check this out from a local Lincolnshire newspaper. I wonder if....
  23. Maybe this could quash the rumours as even I have been seemingly misinformation; The following is an e-mail sent to Paul at Goldmine who reported that the copy for auction was Kenny Burrell's. I disagreed but please read the reply Hi Steve, I actually just checked with John on my article, and this copy is the Kenny Burrell copy and not the third one to which you refer. But thanks for alerting me to the possible inaccuracies. I do very much appreciate it. It was good to go back and check with John to make sure I had everything right. Pete On 2/16/09 4:15 PM, "steve handbury" <steve.handbury@btinternet.com> wrote: Hi Peter, I read with interest your take on the Frank Wilson auction. John Manship is a friend of mine who I have known and respected for many years. I also write for a couple of soul music publications here in the UK. John will not reveal the sellers identity for various reasons but I'm assured that the copy up for auction is NOT Kenny Burrells who is also a friend. The two known copies here in the UK are indeed owned by Kenny (very playable condition but with writing on the label) and Tim Brown (the warped one which doesn't play well). In John's words "this is the third copy which is the only one not to have come from Motown's archives" which indicates that at least one escaped into the public. I would also be more conservative on the pricing. In guides it is valued at circa £15000 simply because that is what Kenny was prepared to pay. I think £10000 is a fair price but obviously interest has grown since Kenny bought his copy and that may spur other buyers on. In the current climate though, there are many things to be taken into consideration. I have spoken to a good friend of Berry Gordy's who informs me that he has a copy of every record pressed at the Motown plant. I'm unable to confirm this but it could be a possibilty. If that is the case then there are four copies known. The whole thing is a can of worms but I think your article could be far from the truth. It is just a warning in the fickle world of northern soul and record buying. Best regards Steve Handbury Manifesto magazine/ Echoes magazine
  24. Sorry, I feel mine beats all others. Perfect northern, perfect Motown and perfect vocals from the one and only Gladys Knight with Just Walk In My Shoes. 15k for Frank Wilson or £5 for Gladys.... no competition and yes, I play it out at every venue possible. Never tire of it.
