A review of Gwen McRae feat Soulpower All-Stars

A LITTLE REVIEW OF GWEN McCRAE featuring the SOULPOWER ALL-STARS

Gwen McCrae (voc), Lars Stoermer (sax), Jörg Bücheler (tb), Johannes Uhlmann (g), Helge Adam (keys), Lars Lehmann (bass), Kristof Hinz (dr)

Gwen McCrae has certainly earned her kudos since her smash hit Rockin Chair was released in 1975.  She has performed with Stevie Wonder, James Brown, Al Green, the Temptations, the O'Jays, Teddy Pendergrass, the late Ray Charles, Luther Vandross and Jocelyn Brown amongst others. All this, after Columbia Records (whom she signed with in 1970) decided not to renew her recording contract in 1973!

I met Al after work at 8 and we raced up to Camden with no idea what time Gwen would be on stage.   No needs to have worried - there was plenty time for beers and at 9:15 the band "Soulpower All-stars" walked on stage signalling the imminent arrival of Gwen. They played a blinding funk instumental appropriately entitled "Soulpower" before their female MC, Drika, took to the mike to announce that the "Queen of Rare Groove" had arrived.

Gwen is 61 but there's no way she looks a day over 40. Dressed in  jeans, heels and a very sparkly dress, she looked amazing.  As she launched into 90% of Me Is You, she sounded as fresh as she did in her Columbia years.  Every note, whether low or high (and my god she went high) was hit with absolute precision.
Gwen and the band played a solid 90 minute set interspersed with banter and tease to get the crowd going.  Among the many songs they played were :-

90% of me is you
All this love that i'm giving
Keep the fire burning
Lead me on
Damn right it's good
Winners together or losers apart
For your love
It's worth the hurt
Been so long
Love without sex
Rockin' chair
Rock your baby

The performance was excellent and the crowd really got into the spirit (some of the guys a little too much!! but Gwen didn't mind - shouting back that she was too much woman for them... and we didn't doubt it for an instance).

It had been a long time since we last enjoyed a live set as much as this - the icing on the cake was getting to hear "Lead Me On" sung live and of course getting the single signed by Gwen after the show.

Ronnie Laws Every Generation Cd Release

Classic lp gets a cd outing
Smile on my face seeing this classic lp finally geting a cd release, (now wondering where my old copy is stashed)
Ronnie Laws- Every Generation
Saxophonist Ronnie Laws held high profile gigs with Quincy Jones and Earth, Wind And Fire before signing with Blue Note in 1975 where his first album Pressure Sensitive yielded the hit “Always There” which is still a staple in dance clubs around the world.

By Every Generation, his fourth album, Laws’s writing and production was getting so sophisticated and R&B-oriented, that he was moved to United Artists Records. With writing and producing partner William Jeffrey, Ronnie produced state-of-the-art R&B gems with this album, using his own band plus siblings Hubert and Eloise Laws and guests Larry Dunn, Joe Sample and Patrice Rushen.

Radio Broadcaster Georgie Woods Dies, June 19 2005

Maybe not so familiar to UK soulies, but legendary radio broadcaster Georgie Woods, who introduced Philadelphia to the sounds of Little Stevie Wonder and the Temptations and took active part in the 1960s civil-rights movement, has died. He was 78.
Woods, who moved to Florida in 1996, died early Saturday of a heart attack, according to his longtime companion, Doris Harris.
Woods came to Philadelphia from New York in 1953 and went on to use the airwaves of WDAS-AM and WHAT-AM to bring the city emerging talents such as the Temptations, Stevie Wonder and Michael Jackson. Known on the radio as "the guy with the goods," Woods also brought James Brown, Aretha Franklin and other acts to shows at the city's landmark Uptown Theater.
In the 1960s, he would sometimes stop the music for hours on WDAS to talk about the civil-rights movement and the work of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. HE also marched in Selma, Alabama, with King and helped charter 21 buses to bring Philadelphians to King's historic March on Washington DC in 1963.

Soul Deep BBC A Critique By Rob Moss

SOUL DEEP - A critique by Rob Moss.

When the news that the BBC were to commission a series on the history and development of Soul music was announced, the sense of anticipation and excitement amongst devotees was palpable. After virtually ignoring this music, as an art form, for over 40 years, the Corporation was finally going to apply their considerable resources, influence and money to the type of 'in depth' scrutiny and investigation usually only reserved for so called 'mainstream' entertainment. Finally, a major broadcaster would not only have access to information and images long denied to the world, but, more importantly, the will to find, share, expose and document these treasures. A giant void could now be filled - new pages added to the rich mural of musical, sociological and cultural history. Who cared if it had been inspired by a fast food advertising campaign, or that the producers knew little of their subject. Surely, the BBC would get it right. Wouldn't they? Yes, of course they would - they possess the reputation of being the finest, fairest, most thorough news gathering organisation on the planet. But...sadly, the producers didn't get it right. And what we got, in the main, was a disjointed, overly simplistic, poorly researched pastiche that was very disappointing, and lacked ...

Can't Get Over These Memories

IT SEEMS THAT ALL TOO OFTEN THE NEGATIVE SIDE OF OUR SCENE DOMINATES THE TOPIC OF CONVERSATIONS. IT'S SOMETIMES EASY TO OVERLOOK THE MANY POSITIVES THAT SHOWER OUR SHARED PASSION, IT IS WITH THIS IN MIND PLUS THE TOUCHING MESSAGE CARL RECIEVED FROM KID CURRY THAT PROMPTED ME TO POST A FEW WORDS.

MANY OF YOU ARE AWARE THAT CARL NO LONGER DJS, HIS FINAL SET BEING AT PRESTATYN AND OUR THANKS ARE WELL OVERDUE. THE WEEKEND FROM START TO FINISH WAS UNBELIEVABLE, WE KNEW PEOPLE WERE INTENDING TO GIVE CARL A WARM FAREWELL BUT NOTHING COULD HAVE PREPARED US FOR THE RESPONSE HE RECEIVED.

AS HE FINISHED WITH JOHN AND THE WIERDEST FOR THE VERY LAST TIME WE WERE BOTH RENDERED SPEECHLESS. LOOKING OUT AT THE FLOOR WAS LIKE VIEWING A SEA OF HANDS, WE COULD'NT SPEAK, NOT EVEN TO EACH OTHER. THANKYOU SOMEHOW SEEMS INADEQUATE, WE KNOW MANY SOUL FANS HAVE SUPPORTED CARL, BOTH THROUGH FOLLOWING HIS MUSIC BUT ALSO PERSONALLY, WE WILL NEVER FORGET MANY ACTS OF KINDNESS AND WILL ALWAYS REMAIN GRATEFUL.

Lookback At Monkey Llandudno Sat 07th May

Lookback At Monkey Llandudno Sat 07th May
3 years since the very first monkey and could say things have changed a bit since those days!
One slight change, that there is a slight chance some may have noticed,
is that the main nights have moved. No more hanging out in the good old
borderlands, instead have moved about 50 miles away to the North Wales
coast in Llandudno
Thanks to Chico's fine efforts a new venue
has been sorted, well say new but as it is The Penrhyn Old Hall in
Llandudno, some may say “revived” as was the home of the highly rated
soul nights that were held there around 7 years ago.
The venue
is a large listed 16th century manor hall here, and while on the
outside it looks just like that, once inside the building there is a
bit of a tardis effect. The dance complex part is purpose made for such
an event, dj booth, a unusual floor and layout, all a bit different
from the usual but sort of tailor made if know what I mean, and have to
say that apart from Chico having to do a bit of tomfoolery with the
sound system, any night which after 10 mins of turning up the venue is
ready to roll is a most welcome change!
Crowd wise was great
to have such a good turn out for the first one at a new location, and
had many dmsc regulars showing up, which along with many new faces got
this new series of events off to a flying start with a fresh vibe.
Thanks to all the travelers who made the trip from all over- Chester ,
Kent, Hampshire, Wirrall, Manchester, Midlands, Yorkshire and so on and
of course thanks to all those from North Wales.
Sounds wise,
guest for this one was Andy Dyson who did a great set, rest of the dj
line up was as per the flyer/plays below and going by ears and eyes( as
in floor reaction and feedback both on and after night ) did the
business. Grabbed a mixed grab bag of sounds from all involved on night
give idea of what was thrown out

Aug (gap due to summer) and looks like going to be a big one as can be
billed either as first time at monkey for Soul Sam (dj-ing not as a

You Learn Sumfing New Everyday
Posted by Trifle, 24 November 2005 ·

One Saturday at Rugby Soul Club, I learned that Young Matt Smart (and I mean young ... especially amongst the old fogies of the Soul Scene) is one helluva DJ. Smooth linking, wonderful new stuff (to me) and stuff that I hear all too seldom, including If This Isn't Love by Johnny Bartell(?).

He tells me (Matt, not Johnny) he's been on the scene for erm 8 years I think, (aw bless (don't you just hate that expression?! ) he musta been a strip of a lad back then). I hope I didn't scare him with my Smirnoff-fuelled rantings about what a great set he'd played. And I was not the only one thanking/complimenting him.

Anyway, the message to all you promoters out there is .... Get Smart.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch ........T'other day I learnt that, as you get older, your hair-down-there falls out!!!

I did NOT learn this from experience I might add ... but from "Grumpy Old Women" - a highly humorous yet somewhat depressing TV programme confirming what happens as the female of the species gets older. Soul ladies in their 30s and younger, take action... before the sands of your hourglass figure fall... remember your anti-wrinkle night creams, 5 portions a day, 30 minutes heart rate-increasing exercise (is that per day or per week?).

Anyhoo, there's a silver lining in most clouds, this one being no more painful razor cuts or ripping your fanny off with strips covered in hot wax.... In fact, who on earth first decided that would be a good idea? My mother used to berate me for sticking my fingers in the hot wax that pooled at the top of a lit candle, as I marvelled at it quickly solidifying in a thin layer on my fingertip ... but she never warned of the pain involved in sticking it on and ripping it off me private bits!

So .... What did YOU learn today?

Getting Nowhere Fast (floyd Smith)
Posted by , 15 August 2005 ·

In some European countries, they drive a lot slower than we do in this one.

Norway, for example, has an average speed of about 80kmph (50mph) on their motorways. I think this creates a certain calm. Whilst riding there on my recent expedition, not once did I feel badgered or intimidated by other drivers. Another advantage of having to go slower was that it gave me time to take in the breathtaking scenery ........ but I tangent.

I reckon, over here, everyone's in such a hurry, we feel we have to keep up.

Por example ... Twat driving 2 inches from your rear bumper = stress. And it aint a nice feeling, so oftentimes we speed up to accommodate said twat, eventually pulling over to allow twat to pass.

Possible solutions:

Move to slower-paced European Country.

Move to even slower-paced Caribbean Country (ah, yes mon!)

Change staple diet to incorporate as much Cadbury's Caramel as possible.

Drive slower and chant mantras very loudly when hassled by Twats, pretending to be oblivious to any vehicular activity that might cause the onset of the dreaded red mist. :

Build a Twat Repulsion device as per yer commonorgarden Bond movie, eg oil slick jets at rear of vehicle, or maybe sharp coconut knife implements on hub area of wheel which extend at the press of a button, slashing Twat's tyres as he passes probably too closely to prove a point.

Become sandwich board lady conveying message "Speeding is bad for your soul"..........

(Well, it had to bear relevance to our beloved cult somewhere along the line).

We Have Reason To Believe U Av Bin ....

It's time .... Tick tock tick tock bong!!!! ..... for another blog. And why not? I ask myself. I don't know ... I respond. And then we chew the cud and catch up about stuff.

Anyroadup, I was tinkin de udder day ..... as one does.... There's a fair few folk newish to the scene. Not sure what constitutes newish as it's not listed on dictionary.com, but I would hazard ... less than 3 years??

I was wondering whether any of these newish people liked The Snake when they first aheard it (or any other record often sneered at by those longer in the tooth). And whether, to their dismay, the newish people discovered that said track is in fact taboo in the Strange World of Northern Soul.

On further analysis, I decided it might be a good idea for someone to compile a definitive list of all unacceptable soul records. This could then be added to as and when something becomes overplayed. The list should be issued to all DJs (especially newish ones) with penalty of ridicule and possible arrestation by the soul police if caught exposing members of the soul public to any of the sounds on the list.

Sorted! No more embarrassing situations and .......... the final demise of The Snake (except on the scooter scene, but one thing at a time).

Sometimey, I find that Northern Souling does not satisfy all of my multiple personalities, in particular Miss Lou Nattik - the child within. The Soul Scene can be a tad rectal in my not so fkin humble opinion.

I therefore look to the Scootering Scene to provide a very down to earth alternative, which it indeed does..... sometimes perhaps a little too earthy .... But I digress...

The most enjoyable part of the scootering experience for me is the actual riding of a two-wheeled vehicule. Even moreso if I have an interesting destination and no time limits or restrictions to my journey. Even moreso moreso with Soul filtering into the sensory organs at either side of my head whilst I ride.

So, in less than three revolutions of our calendar knowed as "weeks", I will be setting off on an indelible journey of mind body and soul (I would call it incredible, but I aint done it yet). A millennium of miles on a machine that does no more than 73mph - wind-assisted.

Note to self... invest in an MP3 player ... A CD player stuffed in the glove box of a bone shaker scooter causes scratching and flaring - something best left to the Hip Hop Dudes methinx.

If this area is blogless thereafter ... please look out for me on the Danish slave trade networks... those of you that frequent such sites .....

Grimsblog - Saturday 25 June

Spent the weekend in sunny Cleethorpes ... yes, I know I was two weeks late, but hey...
This was probably better anyway...
A Barbeee with a big old B. Hosted by the Amazin Ady & his imaginary scooter and Kaz the Birthday Queen of Clean.
This is my personal thanks to: them, Darren the gentleman, and the rest of the Cleethorpes/Grimsby bunch for making me feel so welcome.

The night was full of RnB, patio dancing, Vodka Jelly that tasted like nutmeg, and forced intake of shots made up of anything within reach (including some bbq lighter fluid I think). The humour was constant and, despite the blood alcohol levels, the conversation was interesting.

Some couldn't take the pace and had to be car(l)ted off home.

NickNick B had to leave just as things were warming up, but returned later when things were cooling down, only to warm things up again, including his tongue (after attempting to eat Ady's Monster Madras).

Thanks again and hope to see you all at Wilton in July.

(note to self .... If offered, do not, repeat, DO NOT, eat doughnuts at Kaz n Ady's )

Pics in the Gallery. Sorry.....

Ramblings at the end of a grey, yet spiritual day....

Wiesmann Roadster (as seen on Top Gear and pronounced Veeeesman, Jeremy, NOT Viceman).
I WANT ONE!!!!
(note to self... find rich, benevolent (and handsome) boyfriend (who is also interesting and far too fat to fit into a Wiesmann Roadster)).

Failing that, maybe the new Batmobile would suffice.

Sufferers of allergic rhinitis should not ride scooters.

Soul is weekend escapism (for me). If too long goes by without it, reality becomes reality!! 'Too long' being one weekend (for me...).

Time does not exist, yet it passes more quickly when you don't want it to .... Like at weekends.

Everything is constantly changing ...... sometimes for the better .........

And remember .......

Blogmornin 6 June In The Year Of Lord Vader 2005

As I sit here idly awaiting delivery of my new oven (hurrarrr, we shall never go hungry again!), I find myself musing on my involvement with music in the past, present and future.

I started guitar lessons when I was young(er), but gave them up because I couldn't play like George Benson after a whole 4 lessons! With that in mind, I recently signed the boy up for piano/keyboard lessons, which he starts today. Penalty of giving up......... A threat far worse than Chinese torture or death by a thousand cuts...... no more TV ... forever and ever amen.

Although he loves soul, blues and other such admirable genres, he also has a predilection for rap (peer pressure maybe ). He and his good buddies have been putting together some rap tunes (although I've been told not to call them "tunes"). My boy does the lyrics and, bias aside, I have to say, they are damn good.

I sneaked a peek at a rap he has saved on our PC. It is called "Just a Kid". I was shocked at the depth of the ideas therein (he is only 11). I was also shocked at the fact that there are swear words in it and the mention of sex!
What is the point in me not allowing him to watch Certificate 15 films!!!!

Guess that'll teach me not to be nosey....

Bloghour 23:31 Friday 3 June Or Thereabouts

I never watch tele, but when I do, all's is on is something I've already bloody well seen! Last night, I ended up somehow re-riveted to "Under Siege" with Steven Segal. Actually, I'd best explain... I was not WATCHING the film WITH Steven..... he was IN it. (He does pop round for a cheesy homlet n a chinwag now and again, but this was not one of those occasions ).

Anywayz, much to my dismay ....... towards the end of the film....... After a big punch-up using sharp coconut knives and impressive martial arty moves, Steve sticks the evil villain (Tommy Lee Jones)'s head through a screen and says ......... "Keep The Faith".

This is a blatant misrepresentation of our deep and meaningful, if slightly overplayed, catchphrase. I have therefore written to the Producers of the flim to ask them to edit/overwrite the line accordingly for future broadcasts. Thought maybe he could instead say ... erm.... Something like "I got MY mojo working" or "In your face" or some other more appropriate idiom.

Speaking of overplayed things (notice smooth(ish) link ) ..........I have recently become concerned that, if I listen to my favourite tracks too often they may become as tedious, nay, infuriating as the Crazy Frog theme. I have thus removed all favourite listening material from my automobile/portable listening device/stereogram.

Observations of the day.............

Do not answer the fone too early on a Sunday morning as it may be pissed or mad or mad pissed people who have not yet been to bed, who are foning for help in finding their way around the soul source website.

Fresh coconut is delicious, but it is dangerous to try to poke it out of the shell with a very sharp long knife, especially as skin and flesh are prone to tear when stabbed with such an implement.

When your oven is broken, preventing you from having the traditional slapthigh Sunday Roast, a new one will not magically appear on the doorstep. (I stumbled across this amazing discovery this after 4 weeks and 2 days of waiting.)

If your Things To Do Today list does not include:
* re-size photos from Friday's outing;
* think up appropriate titles for said fotos;
* upload fotos to Soul Source website
....then these tasks should be delayed to a more convenient time, in favour of eating, sleeping, ordering ovens, or writing To Do lists.

Paraskevidekatriaphobia: Fear Of Friday The 13th
Posted by , 13 May 2005 ·

I very rarely watch TV, and I never watch the news. But when I do, I always remind myself never to watch it again. Ever.
Doom, gloom, and destruction with a touch of sensationalism.

Could not believe the story about the kids who video their mates hitting people who are on their mobile phones in public????

Was chatting to a friend today (yes, I have one) who's 16 year old son is getting out of control - think it was a slippery slope after he bought his first hooooodie - anyway, we agreed that they should bring back some form of national service for young offenders.
I'd happily be one of the "teachers".

On a lighter note, during my brief sampling of the couch potato lifestyle, I noticed Friends has finished yet Eastenders is still running. So, looks like the nation prefers doom and gloom to palatable-watch-with-your-mouth-slightly-ajar-breathing-through-your-nose sitcoms.

Where the fk is the warm weather?

I am thick thick thick up to here (always hated Freddie Parrot, yet I am quoting him ) of the chill winds and the rain and the cloudy skies we are currently experiencing.

My folks live in Florida, and people always say... "Are you mad? What are you doing living in this country?" (sometimes both in the same sentence).

Of course the weather is great there (if a tad warm ), but that's where it ends unfortunately. I don't do Garth Brooks (or is it Crooks? I always get them two mixed up ), nor do I do chewing tobbaca, check shirts, or Jodie Foster in Silence of the Lambs accents.

Mate at work today found a lastminutegiveortakeaweek.com holiday to Egypt for £399 all in. 23 degrees. Lucky git.

Best I can do this month is camping at Skeggy at the end of the month. But that's fine, cos by then the weather here will be the same as it is in Egypt. Won't it?

Blogdate 10 May .... Another Day Older
Posted by , 10 May 2005 ·

I looked at my hands today, and noticed that they looked really really old ... I have decided to look on ebay for a new pair.

Then I got to thinking ........... I wonder what soul DOs will be like in 15 years time? I'll still be there .... even after the unavoidable hip and knee replacements .... necessary due to years of ballistic northern soul dancing in rubber-soled footwear. In fact, I am hoping that, by then, they will have invented bionic body parts so that I can still dance to the uptempo stuff.

I pontificated on what the modern music of the day would be. And what would be being played in the "Modern" room at a Soul Do.

How many people under 35 would be turning up? ..... to dance rather than to wipe foamy drool and green sputum from their parents' chins.

I envisaged my son as a first class northern soul DJ, but with all the vinyl being worn out by then, CDs would be accepted ..... which is good, cos he will be having to support me in my later years and therefore wont have any spare cash to spend on antiques.

The decision was made .... rather than talk to myself out loud incessantly, I will create a blog and write to myself therein in in instead. To outsiders it will look like I am working, then hopefully my son won't fear for my sanity and it would therefore be less likely that he would have me committed when he is old enough to do so ......... which is nice.

Middlewich - The 3 Greyhounds - Inaugural Crossover night - Saturday 7th May

We had been looking forward to this one for some time now. There has been a real buzz slowly smouldering and for the last couple of weeks, people have been coming up to us saying they are looking forward to it; Kev the promoter was telling me a couple of weeks ago that he would be happy with 40 through the door but with the feedback we were getting I knew that he easily double that if they all turned out. On the night as it so often happens quite a few who intended to go didn't for whatever reason, but at the peak there was a good 80 people through the door, which is great when you consider that this first time event took place in an annex, an almost Barn Like function room at a country pub a couple of miles outside Holmes Chapel (making it a return to my old Manor for me, being from Congleton less then 12 miles away)

The day started ominously; it looked like the Nightingale shitty stick had struck again after getting my haircut I had noticed water dripping from underneath the car!! Nightmare!! I barely made it the couple of miles back to our house without frying the engine. I, as you can imagine was not a happy bunny when a closer inspection revealed a tiny continuous leak from the water pump a quick sprint to Mike's Auto-parts shelled out just Two of your Eeenglish pounds and with a sprinkling of Mikes Magic Bug Powder Dust and the leak was gone, at last some good luck. All this barely left enough time to sort out the playbox, snack on a nutty pasta thing, bathe and preen and collect our traveling companions for the evening - Budgie and Carol Pountain. Truth be told we were running about half an hour late but if you know us then you will know that is really good time for us

So at 5:30 we hit the road first stop Mummy Nightingale's Buglawton Bungalow, all this with no problems with me water thankfully. We duly dropped Budge and Carol off at the local pub for a snackette, whilst we adjourned to the Mother Ship. When we got there mother had a house full as my sister and her three kids (and no Ali, 15 yr old Ella is not taller than me) and a Husband who looked like an extra from Frankenstein's Surgery for beginners after an altercation with the sharp end of a table after copious amounts of Stella ouch that had to hurt. A cup of tea and a slice of cake later we were back on the road, Middlewich bound.

After a brief discussion on the merits of women's map reading we set of down the A54 following the given directions, I distinctly remember telling Budgie that Ali was right about the unlisted left turn that could have saved us an eight mile U-Turn. We got there just before 9, parked up in the function rooms own car park unloaded the play boxes and ascended the stairs to the main event.

As we entered the room was already buzzing with a good 50 people in and dancers on the floor, which was quite busy for early doors, as the venue is compact and bijou but a great little place to be honest. Straight away we were greeted with familiar faces Dave and Christine Lucas (The Landlord and Landlady of the Folded Arms) Gary, Kev and Susie Etheridge, Alan & Judi Pollard, Angela Lambert, Flanny and Debbie, Steve Connor, Arthur & Maria (sporting a very fetching Betty Blue haircut) John and Dian May, Reg, Richard and loads of other who are hidden in the recess's of my Alzheimer ridden brain. Kev also re-introduced me to the sister of my best mate all through school Mick Kiely, the really weird thing was that even though I'd not seen Annette since I was a spotty 15 year old and she was heading off to Wigan or wherever. We actually found that we had been going to the same venues at the same time all those years ago although she had moved down south, what was even weirder was that she knew and used to frequent venue's with Ali and Budgie's crowd from back then, Small World of Northern Soul eh?
After the first half hour spent meeting and greeting we settled in to enjoy Steve Briscoe & Gary Powell's sets playing really across the boards everything for Christine Cooper "Heartaches" to Sex "It's You" our turn was drawing closer so after the events of last week we were prepared: Ali donned her Kevlar vest, crash helmet and riot shield and I was tasked manning the tennis racket to return incoming tomatoes

With a handful of request's before we even started we headed up to the decks, Gary had finished his set with a couple of Northern numbers Christine Cooper and a Lenis Guess tribute to Martin Luther so we ignored that and started straight in with Odyssey "Battened ships" although I was vigilant throughout the spot we didn't get egged once so we must have done something right and some people even said they really liked it which is always great. Kev had given us and Arthur an hour and a quarter each which really made a valid difference and enabled us to play around a little and fill in most of the requests we were asked for (promoters take note, save yourself money on the DJ roster and give the spinners that little extra edge).

Arthur Fenn followed, he was the main event this night and as always he was absolutely superb from the outset, I really can't express just how good he was, little wonder that he has been one of the very best DJ's in the country for so long. Highlights from his set for me were his new Lovely Ladies (Stang), The Camaros "Lover come back" (Dar-Char), The Stunners (Renfro), Papa Bear and the Cubs (SMS), Earthchild (Marjon) and a feast of other gems to numerous to mention.

All in all a superb inaugural night and one we shall be returning to as paying punters in the near future, the next one is on September 3rd with Soul Sam and Flanny - miss it at your peril

Because I know some of you like this sort of thing here's what we played on the night, thankfully all well recieved and very enjoyable it was too

My First Blog - What A Weird Weekend
Posted by , 03 May 2005 ·

What a weird weekend we had; in parts wonderful, in parts really crap, and other parts there was both good and bad to be found.

Start off Saturday with a 4 hour round trip to collect my son from Buckingham, back to the house and a mad dash to get ready for the weekend ahead which was to comprise of the Stafford reunion in Stoke and then a mighty trek up to the North East to spin at an alldayer in Gateshead.

So off to Staff-stock - arrive at our hotel to find I had booked us into possibly the worst hostelry in Staffordshire - the Stop Inn in Newcastle Under Lyme. I'd booked on t'internet and had been unable to use one of our regualr choices like the Holiday Inn as they were fully booked - but this place had seemed like it would be a similar standard to a Travel Inn or Premier Lodge, it was certainly the same price. Wrong ! Arrived to find they had no record of our booking, even though I had the proper confirmation in my sweaty hand, so they gave us one of their annexe chalets. It reminded me of a Bulgarian youth hostel, or one of those truck stops where burly builders working away from home have fist fights after too many pints of Wifebeater. In fact, one of those burly builders fists was still embedded in the bathroom door - charming It was Grotsville of the first order, the whole place needed a steam clean, if demolition was not an option - the wardrobe resembled something you would find in a skip, and the bed was lumpy. I decided not to check too closely because I just KNEW it would have some unsavoury stains

Quick wash and brush up in a bathroom that needed its own wash and brush up and off to the Queens Hall. Presented with a massive bouquest of white flowers and a gift bag of goodies from Janine and Dave (including Gene Chandler - Without You Here on Curtom - a record I've been after for a while - thanks my darlings) A fab social night filled with faces from the past and present and I found myself in a state of hysterical laughter on more than one ocassion - unable to comment on the music as I think, bar a quick sourjourn to listen to Budgies spot upstairs, I was mostly in bars, corridors etc gassing for England. The night gets a thumbs up for high enjoyment factor, 10 out of ten for bestowal of birthday pressies, and a for my bag going walkies.

Having planned to leave earlyish so we could get a reasonable slumber, but my handbag had disappeared and after a fruitless search we ended up leaving about 6.30, without both our mobile phones, make up and other bits and pieces that were unforutunately in the missing bag.

Decided to take on the receptionist at the hotel in my most courteous manner - ever seen that Little Britain sketch where "the computer says no " ? Thats the long and short of it - an automon with a chirping "I'm sorry you were disappointed" left me with no refund for the shocking facilities and a desire to punch in the manner of a burly builder.

Headed up to the Newcastle and got strangely excited when I saw The Angel of the North - but closer up its not so iconic. Dont know what I was expecting but I was a bit underwhelmed. A chill out at the Travel Inn (clean, tidy, no burly builders punch marks in the doors) and over to The Federation Brewery for the alldayer at the Lancastrian Suite. My god - what a FANTASTIC venue - marble halls, plush facilities, plenty of tables and chairs, magnificent dance floor overlooked by a balcony and a great stage, high above the floor with plenty of room to set up for a spot and bright enough to see your records clearly.

Wasn't as full as the venue can cope with, I think the lads were down on usual numbers but with Soul Sam & Bob Hinsley on the bill, and Colin Curtis downstairs in the Modern room - there were high hopes that the venue would fill up by evening. Guess the numbers peaked at around 300 - great for most venues but this is a spacious place. Rostered to go on after Robbo who was playing madly gutsy fast paced Northern, which I dont collect ! I wasn't overly worried about changing the pace as I'd been booked to play a crossover set and the gig had been billed as all genres. Kicked off with Towana & the Total Destruction and waited for this evergreen favourite to benefit from a little appreciation from the floor....and....ooops, it was a total choker.

Persevered for a few records with the like that would normally be in my playbox before resorting to the obvious oldies which did actually get a far warmer response. Very frustrating.
Decks were a tad bouncy, the arms needed more weight but as long as you didnt back cue or attempt to mix a la like Grandmaster Flash this wasnt a problem. Must admit that was by far the toughest audience I've ever had to play to. I've never spun anywhere before where people simply dont dance to anything other than oldies ....and they didn't seem to know an awful lot of was what in my box - most the events I attend or play at, that would have been a very safe set ! Some of the biggest records in the UK practically cleared the floor for Soul Sam at one point (Margaret Little, Belita Woods C/U, Joseph Webster and Hamilton Movement), and whilst he had them up dancing to Northern oldies it was the one of the safest spot I've heard him play out, but to each their own , the crowd responded so thats the job done well by Sam :-)))

It's as disheartening to travel on a ten hour round trip at a lot of personal expense and find yourself faced with people who wont even dance to a class Northern track like George Hughley, as it is to sit in a venue with your arms crossed unhappy because the DJ isnt playing Saxie Russell ! In the main what was popular with the floor is not my kind of music, certainly not what I choose to spend my record money on and the promoters knew that I am a crossover collector & DJ - not an oldies spinner - and thats what I was booked to play, although I purposely filled out my box with some extra Northern for the trip and gave it a spin - think the Fed crowd and I are a mismatch musically, which is a great shame as I know that the lads specifically promoted it as all genres and they very much want to progress the music policy there.

On the bright side I had a lot of people come up to tell me how much they liked to hear something fresh, the folks in Gateshead are very friendly, the venue is fantastic - one of the loveliest I've ever been to, and the promoters are all top blokes.

Playlist - in the main well known, safe stuff and mostly of the Northern vein not crossover.

Towana & Total Destruction - Wear Your Natural Baby - Romark
Continental Four - Way I love you - Jay Walking
Moses Smith - Come on and let me love you - Cotillion
Dave Love - Baby Hard Times -Worlds
San Franciscan TKO's - Make Up Your Mind - Kent
Ruby Winters - Better - Diamond
Othello Robinson - So In Luv - Era
Linda Jones - My heart needs a break - Loma
Betty Lloyd - I'm Catching On - BSC
Mamie Lee - I can feel him slipping away - MGM
Choice of Colour - Your Love - APT
Trumains - Ripe for the picking - RCA (request)
Rhonda Davies - Can you remember - Duke
George Hughley - Thats why I cry - Buddah
Harold Melvin - Get Out - Landa
Barbara McNair - Your gonna love my baby - Motown
Deon Jackson - Love Makes the world Go round - Atlantic
Almeta Latimore - These Memories - Mainstream (request)
Minits - Still a part of me - MGM
Spartans - I dont need another lover - Era
Wee - Try Me - Owl (request)

Our soulmates Adam, Mick and Jason who all live locally came to give me the warm hand of support and the ocassional glass of wine (and by god I needed it) as did Karl Rhodes and Debbie who trecked up from Stockport, bless them. Met up with one of my female counterparts, Lianna, who reguarlly spins up in the NE, and her sister Donna - great girls who were real sweethearts, especially when I was so despondant about the reaction the set got. Felt miserable that I had let the promoters down, but also felt that I hadnt got a proper grasp or brief on what was needed to please their regulars - if I'd known I was playing to a died in the wool oldies crowd I probably would never had accepted the booking, certainly not one so far away.

Next morning we filled our boots at the Breakfast bar (having literally forgotten to eat for the previous 2 days) and headed home, on a bit of a downer, thinking about my poor performance at the Fed, my missing handbag, and the lack of mobile phones to contact home (my 17 year old son was at a rock concert in London and I wanted to make sure he'd not been molested by perverts or press ganged by white slave traders) when the Lucky Nightingales got shafted one more time.....unmarked police car on the M1 in Sheffield pulled us over with John having been clocked at 95 mph. Bummer. As we were in Sheffield we decided that it was Shanes fault

Final insult was that I hadn't packed enough knickers and had to wear a pair of One Trouts boxers (its all right, they were clean) on the way home.

So all in all a weekend of highs and lows.......next weekend to look forward to. The 3 Greyhounds in Middlewich, a brand new crossover venue which will be right up my street.

Old Town And Barry Soul Survey - Cdkend 244, new release

The Kent label has had a long and happy relationship with Old Town Records and its subsidiary Barry. The first recordings we put out was the wildly named “Think Smart Soul Stirrers: Jerk It At The Party In Chinatown” Various Artists LP. A contender and probable winner for any “Let’s see how many track titles we can get into an album name” contest.

That was in 1987 and featured all the labels’ Northern Soul classics like the Gypsies It’s A Woman’s World, Lorraine & The Delights Baby I Need You and the Fiestas Think Smart.

It was also the period when the label was being reassessed by soul fans as a source of “newies”, ie 60s soul sounds that had never been played on the Northern scene before. Also the desired tempo of records had dropped and the big beat ballad was very much in vogue. So tracks like Freddie Houston’s If I Had Known and Donald Height’s You Can’t Trust Your Best Friend were more than acceptable to Northern devotees of the time. These sorts of records also made great listening for the general soul fan. In true Kent style we put in a ballad or two and even managed some Latin boogaloo to rile the purists.

When LPs became a doomed species Old Town was one of the first labels to be transferred to CD, which due to lack of space on the cover was merely called “Old Town & Barry Soul Stirrers”. We went with this soul source because there had been more exciting discoveries on the label, the tapes were great and label owner Hy Weiss and Ace were by then old buddies. The extra music we could squeeze on included: the Sparkels enchanting Try Love One More Time, a Jobete song from the New York pens of Sidney Barnes and George Kerr, Frank Howard’s rousing dancer I’m So Glad, Rosco & Barbara (Mr & Mrs Gordon to you) Could This Be Love, a Rhythm and Soul classic and Peggy Scott’s magnificent, modern mover Things Have More Meaning Now.

When Hy Weiss got out of the business in the 1990s and sold his masters to the Music Sales company, we had to delete our CD. But now we have re-established a good relationship with the new owners and it has been possible to look at the whole catalogue again. The good news is that we’re contracted to issue two CDs, this one mainly for dancers, and another for the ballad and southern soul style aficionados. Plus we’ve realised there is enough top quality material in the vault for a second volume of primarily dance tracks; so any of the previous comps that didn’t make the cut are likely to feature somewhere along the line.

The Big Os Blog from 2005

The Calm Before The Storm
Posted by The Big O 16 March 2005 ·
A few days before the next NORTHERN SOUL @ THE PLINSTON! and it's the usual madness that the paying punter never sees. The house is a mass of scraps of paper with ticket reservation names scribbled on them, a record box overflowing with toons (that is going to have to be whittled down before Saturday), a mad scramble to ensure we have a spare mixer on hand due to a technical fault in the normal one, loads of phone calls to the printers for the May flyers to be ready and last minute details like ordering and designing the posters for the walls, trading cards, adverts and mail out via email to all members, all 800+ of them that AOL won't allow you to mail any more than 20 of them in one mail!!! On top of all this you still have to be a father and a husband. Who said the life of a promoter was an easy one!!!!!!!
Posted a few comments on Soul-Source and checked out eBay to see what's selling etc. Can't belivie that Bessie Banks is going for £300+ on Manships auction but, hey, if someone is willing to pay that for it (and there seems plenty of them), hats off to him. I have one that will be going that way and I sure as hell hope that I get similar for it. My only regret is the 5 copies in company sleeves I left last trip Stateside due to a lack of funds and a large choice on what to return home with (much like the Mind & Matters I left at the same shop in the lates 80's!)
Roll on saturday, at least for a short while the madness stops and I get at least one day off from planning and plotting the next night. Of course, saturday night itself will be nothing but stress and constant monitoring on all fronts to ensure that the paying Soulie has a great night, but, as I said before, no-one ever sees that side of the scene.
A Promoters Work Is Never Done!
Posted by , 17 March 2005
Woke up, sun is out, birds are singing and a whole heap of running around awaits! Got the kids off to school, return home and whilst designing a last minute Trading Card for Gary Belcher with a cross-dressing theme I listen to a few toons to get me in the mood for the day:
Mellow Madness - Save The Youth - Mega *and just how mega is this! If this isn't a Monster by year end I'll design a Trading card around me! Mega indeed!*
Lil Jimmie - Hold On - CD Only Must spin this during my 45 mins of fame upstairs in The Ghetto! What a toon*
Barkays Ft Jay Blackfoot - Long Time Coming *last of a trio of Modern/Crossover gems and perfect to follow Lil Jimmie. I love Southern Soul and this gets even my jaded pallet salavating- yummie soul*
At this point I do a few phone calls to DJ's to firm up dates etc and switch to Northern and R&B toons:
Earl King - A Man and A Book - Jobete Acetate *R&B still moves me and this is a great soulful dancer perfect for the discerning Mod. My feet are soon tapping*
Bobby Freeman - Swing Me - Unissued *can't decide if I really like this or not, one for listening to a few times I think but has potential*
Ella Washington - Bye Bye Baby - Atlantic Ah, memories of when I was a lot younger and could still flick and kick on the dancefloor without the need for a full cardiac arrest team to be on stand-by! Is this played anymore???? An old North Herts MONSTER that still hits the spot*
Trading Card done and calls made it's a mad dash to the printers where the long haired and rather cuddly Dave greets me with his usual impish charm and a handful of large format posters to adorne the walls of the Plinston on Saturday night. The May flyers are also ready and the extra MODERN BY MOONLIGHT flyers I have requested are also done. We laugh and chat and I dash off to the Plinston.
I mark up the posters so they know where they are to be hung, catch up on how the tickets sales are (going very well as usual, I breathe a sigh of relief), leave posters and flyers and manage a quick chat with the management to ensure everything is in place before, you guessed it, making another mad dash back home to sort out the accounts and have another flick through the play box and the impossible task of working out which ones to leave on the racks.
That done, picked up the kids from school, dropped back again 1hr later for footie practise, checked out my latest CD purchase, SOUL GOSPEL, and conclude it is indeed a fantastic collection and I make a mental note of letting everyone on Soul-Source know to buy it.
1 more day to go before the event and everything is looking OK...but we shall see.

Glad to see Earl King getting the Big O's thumbs up....also available on the Soul Satisfaction 4 or 5 CD on Motown. Shame on me for the blatant plug but it's all in the line of passing on vital soul info Jo

Too true Jo and is worthy of the plug. We share a love of Motown I know (and taking the p*** out of friends etc) and this is certainly a goodie. lol
Time To Reflect
Posted by The Big O, 21 March 2005 ·
Is it safe to come out now? 2 days on from the last plinston event and it's all kicked off on SS. VicG makes a mistake that I once made, namely having a rant straight after returning from an event before looking at his response in the cold light of day, and all of a sudden it's open season on promoters and venues alike.
Our event on Saturday was well down, for us, on numbers and it was hard work in the Main Hall trying to get people up. Upstairs in The Ghetto! it was the normal good humoured p**s taking night but overall it was a disappointing night in terms of numbers, and from a promoters point of view, interms of bank balance. I was lucky enough to have DJ's that were willing to do their bit to help with costs and I have to say a huge thanks to them for the gesture, it will not be forgotten. The annoying thing about the thread on SS is that none of the positives about Saturday's event came over, the friendly atmosphere, the new friendships made etc etc. Cest La Vie
Never one to be down for long, and following an email of support from a first timer I recieved Sunday morning, it's straight back to the work of a promoter, in this case fighting your corner on SS and giving Mr Roberts a verbal bitch slap for trying to hijack a thread about us I think this will be an ongoing thing for the next few days but hoping that people will vote with their feet at the May 6th event and come and at least check us out to make up their own minds if we are DimWits (to quote) or not.
Raging toothache kicks in Sunday night and I put a brave face on for the kids and read the emails I've got from members and DJs alike following the continued debate. Decide that it's time for bed and toddle off, slip under the covers and cry like a baby now that the kids aren't around to see Daddy in pain
Monday morning and there is much to do. Send an email to Plinston management thanking them for the new security measures and staff, start the next trading card and artwork for the flyers, prepare the email mail lout to all web sites with the next event details on, check over the disco gear and store, touch base with Taffy and get feedback and action points to address from saturday night...it goes on.
If anyone thinks that running a club is an easy thing and that somehow, as if by magic, the event just comes together will be, by now I hope, getting an insight into all the work and effort that all promoters, both big and small, have to put into running a club.
This Thing Of Ours - It's A Soulgate Thing!
Posted by TheBigO, 29 July 2007
Well we arrived at the Fishmongers Arms for 7.30pm, having had to put back our entrance by several hours due to the babysitting situation falling through last minute, and were greeted by the soulful toons flowing out into the street and the beer garden at the front of the pub overflowing with 'the old firm' and faces old and new. The fantastic weather ensured the place was buzzing and the sounds were just as hot!
Terry and Paul have taken on the 'This Thing Of Ours' mantle with ease and it's a credit to their late father, our friend Randy, that so many still support the event he started all those years ago. Looking around the venue my conclusion was that nothing had changed, expect our waistlines and hairlines, over those 25+ years and that a good night was in store. I wasn't to be proved wrong!
It's hard to quantify what makes SOULGATE such a unique soulful experience. It's a combination of many little things that all fuse to form, to me at least, a truly great event. The people there are gathered for just one thing, to enjoy great music from across the eras and straddling all genres (Deep, Northern, 6ts, R&B, Modern, R&R and so on) and it's a collective determination to have a great time no matter what. Given some of the puerile pointless debates that have been launched on various forums on this site over the years (soul patches; Cds; Modern V Northern etc) it is refreshing to attend somewhere where all that matters is the Soul and having a great time, forging new friendships and enjoying life. Take note!
Onto my thoughts on the evening then. I was greeted by the grinning winning smile of that bastion of all things soulful Steve G, who was eager to thrust a copy of Natural Impulse into my sweaty palms prior to placing it on the decks. I of course said it wasn't all that whilst inwardly screaming 'BASTARD BASTARD BASTARD' as another of my long time wants fall into Steve's hands (the other being his recent purchasing from the Saphead of Soul (Soul Sam) King Moses) I am beginning to notice a somewhat evil demonic glint in his eye when I walk in a room now. That said his set was excellent and I for one would like to see Steve get lots more bookings and bring his love and joy for the music to a wider audience. I am sure he will be posting his set list elsewhere. Top sounds from a top bloke. Roger Stewart was double decking with Steve and again quality toons despite his love of air force jackets!!!
Sadly I missed the lovely Jo Wallace's set and therefore we were unable to revive our badly synched dancing behind the decks as in previous years but heard great things about her set, an those of all the DJ's I missed including my old mucker and all round top man; The Honey Monster! John Farrell did a blinding set which included many a tip top 6Ts toon, if memory serves WANG DANG DOODLE was one of his which saw Ady C and I collide a few times on the dance floor whilst trying to be that Ace Face from years gone by. Sad!
Ady C seemed as he was really loving his stint behind the wheels of steel and the huge crowd showed their appreciation by keeping the dance floor rammed right up to Taff's last set of the evening which was a Soulgate anthems set. In a word SUPERB! Spooners Crowd; Willie T; Luther; Bobby Kline; Maxine Brown (of course) the list goes on and on and the sweat quota reached new levels as people rushed for any spot they could find to dance on; including tables at one stage. Sadly due to babysitters we had to leave by midnight but I have heard, as I expected, that it went on like this right to the end.
The atmosphere was fantastic, lots of friendly up for it people chatting, dancing, piss taking and forging new friendships over the most soulful soundtrack in the land. It was great to see and meet again many of the old firm I haven't seen for years, Letchworth was, as always, well represented and there were people from the length and breadth of the country.
So many great laffs, so many stories to tell. It is impossible for anyone who has not been to fully appreciate why SOULGATE is so special. On paper it doesn't read great - a soul all-dayer held in a pub in North London open to all with makeshift dance-floors of wavy lino (that caused a few to go arse over tit!) and the carpet in front of the decks with aging old Mods and Soulies - BUT work it does and in spectacular style! Is a soulful social event on a huge scale where dancing, chatting, mickey taking and a general feeling of 'family' all combine as one. There are many who could do with visiting the next one to see how the scene was and is, if you look hard enough. In a time when, to be honest, my feelings for the scene are waning under the mountain of crap pointless arguments and petty squabbling SOULGATE is my Lourdes, restoring my faith and reminding me why, at the age of 14, I fell in love with every aspect of the scene.
We were all there to celebrate the life and musical influence of one man, Randy Cozens, and I know that if that friend of ours was looking down he'd be so proud - not only of everyone there and of the event but in particular because his boys, Terry and Paul, had done him and the SOULGATE legacy proud. Long may this unique soulful gathering continue.

Thanks Steve, despite Terry's text to me it was writen by me and not the lovely Mrs O!!! You swines, lol. We will continue our discussion on the clubs I am opening at years end and what I have planned etc. Obviously you, Taffy Soul Sam, Dave Halsall, Dave Flemming, Nathan and Fingers will all be involved. You played a great set double decking with 'Biggles' Stewart and I shall lookforward to which of my Wants you have picked up when I return from the States!!! Enjoy the Irish Club event in Letchworth in August.
* Quick mention to Little Reg's book about his memories of the scene that he is hoping a pubisher will be bringing to a bookshelf near you soon. Reg has let me read extracts over the years and I have to say its a credit to him that he brings ur passion and love and fun for the scene to life through each and every page. I know Mike Ritson is considering being that publisher and, as I expect he will, he does release it get a copy and enjoy every word. Despite the fact Reg now looks like a chubby version of Dave Hill from Slade!!! God love the little bundle of joy xx

Grapevine - Sound of the Grpaevine Volume 2 GVCD3025 Front Cover
This second volume of Sound of the Grapevine features another 24 'ModernSoul' favourites selected by John Anderson and the team at Grapevine Records. As with Volume 1, this collection features a mixture of acknowledged 'ModernSoul' classics plus a number of lesser-known sides and previously unissued masters which have been rescued from the vaults after gathering dust for so many years.
Although the golden days of soul music are long gone, many of these lost or forgotten gems have matured with the passing of time and some sound better now than they ever did. Famous names are featured here alongside undergound heroes and total unkowns, many of whom will have no idea of the belated interest in their old flip sides and flop records.
Artists such as Bob Relf, Johnny Moore, Corey Blake, Richard Caiton. Tommy Tate, The Jones Brothers and Tony Owens are well aware of their overseas followings but others disappeared into obscurity or passed away before the unexpected news could reach them. And so we dedicate this album to those who never found out that their music really did mean something to someone after all.
1. Dottie Pearson - A House Made Of Love
2. Bobby Cutchins - Leaving (Radio Edit)
3. The Pro-Fascination - I Want To Wrap You In My Arms
4. Bobby Wayne - Long Hard Road
5. Corey Blake - How Can I Go On Without You

The Big Issue Has A Look At Northern Soul

The Big Issue takes a look At Northern Soul - Stevie Cato (from 2004)

A double page look at Northern feature from a recent Big Issue, originally posted up in the Soul Source Gallery and now  transferred across to here  "that soul thing" articles section.
"Fueled by copious amounts of speed, rare Motown cast-off soul tracks and impossibly athletic dance moves, the Northern Soul scene is the original rave scene of its time.

Fuelled by copious amount of speed, rare Motown cast-off soul tracks and impossibly athletic dance moves, the Northern Soul scene was the original rave scene of its time. Now with an influx of born-again and fresh-faced Soulies, it's staging a minor cultural renaissance, Ben Carlish talks to Soul DJ, actor and dancer Steve Cato who appears in a new short film and documentary about the great Northern revival.
It has to be said though, for Cato and Northern Soul purists, the elitist element remains part of the attraction. "We all wanted to be different,* he says, "We all wanted to go somewhere cool. 'When you're going out on the last bus and all the piss-heads are coming out of the Rat and Ferret, totally wasted and looking for a shag, we're on our way somewhere different. We're going somewhere exclusive and rare."
But now the one-time members only club is going global and Cato talks with gleeful enthusiasm about the new blood being attracted to Northern Soul nights in Dublin, Australia, Sweden and Japan.
All this cultural impetus has given rise to a new documentary, The Way of the Crowd, and a short film, Function at the Junction. Both have been packaged in a snazzy box-set along with a vintage Northern soundtrack, and will be launched at Manchester's Bier Keller this week.
Cato appears in both film and documentary, notably in the former as ace Northern Soul dancer Spike Townsend sporting an Afro the size and consistency of a small cloud formation. Directed by Justin McArdle, Function at the Junction has some big names in it including Justin's famous dad, John McArdle (of Billy CorkhilI Brookside fame), John Henshaw (Cops and Early Doors) and Paul Kaye {Dennis Pennis and Two Thousand Acres of Sky). It's a lovely little vignette capturing the sharp and mature flavour of Northern Soul. It won a Kino film festival award and could well be developed into a full-length feature film sometime next year but why would A-grade actors be interested in what is ultimately a B-movie, and a short one at that?
'I think there's a kt of kudos around Northern Soul and a funny side to it, which, I think, comes across in the film,' explains Cato. 'Developing Function at the Junction into a feature film is very important for all of us, because no one in the film got paid. None of the directors, producers, lead actors, art directors, cameramen - everyone did it for free on the proviso that if the feature film comes off we're all in it.'
The documentary, directed by JD Moore, is a comprehensive and joyous celebration of the scene featuring testimony from the likes of Sir Paul Smith, some of the DJ's and artists of the time - and most importantly some of the inveterate Soulies themselves. 'Northern Soul is a religion' says DJ Simon Hunt in The Way of the Crowd. It's a theme that Cato follows with zealous conviction when talking about the beauty of the music and the sanctity of the dance floor, 'I think the songs written back then will never be bettered. They were wonderful songs. And the dance floor is hallowed ground,' he says, 'you don't walk on to it with a pint in your hand - it's like walking into a church. The pulpit is the DJ booth with the DJ the vicar delivering a vinyl sermon and we're the congregation.' And foe those that came before him, for his own generation and the new breed of worshippers hearing those revered mountainous musical sermons once more, the Northern light will never fade.
'At the end of the day for us it doesn't really matter how popular Northern is or if it fades again,' Cato shrugs, "The thing is for us it's a way of life. There's no get out. It's like when you get on that train - there's no stop until tombstone... unless my knees finally give out that is!'

6t's: Rhythm 'n' Soul Society Cd Release On Kent

6T'S: RHYTHM 'N' SOUL SOCIETY / In The Beginning • KENT - CDKEND 239
Words by Ady:-
Nostalgia can hurt
I’ve just been watching "A Hard Day’s Night" with my 16 year old daughter for the first time since I saw it at Derby Gaumont in 1964. It’s brought back the thrills and possibilities of life that it revealed to me as an eleven year old boy; but it’s also left a dull pain in my soul. Whether it’s regret at being unable to relive those vital times, or the mistakes and missed chances that have passed since then, I can’t tell; but it’s a bittersweet sensation.
This then is an appropriate time to review the 6T’S CD and re-live the first years of my and Randy Cozens’ soul club: the “Hard Day’s Night” of my life.
For once it’s the club and the people in it that take the spotlight in the sleeve notes. My apologies to Chuck, Maxine and Brother James, but I’m sure they’ll understand. It’s the story of how classic, vintage, soul music really took off in London and how a generation of Northern Soul fans rediscovered their roots and broadened their appreciation of black American music.
In the late 70s Northern Soul was overly concerned with stompers and rarity and had neglected its soul and mod beginnings. A tough London roofer, who had been an original mod, and a long-haired college kid from Market Harborough, in the Midlands, was the unlikely combination of personalities that really got the scene moving. Prior to that there had been sporadic dances for the 50 or so southern stalwart, soul record collectors but Randy and I, with the 6T'S, proved to be the right geezers at the right time with the best music.
The first night was in Covent Garden on 17 August 1979 and the joyous, sweaty and soul-sated sell-out crowd told us that Rhythm & Soul was the way to go. The music was a mixture of mod classics, early Motown, jazz instrumental grooves and some tough, danceable R&B. Virtually all of it was on 45, was black American and heralded from 1963-1966. The DJs all had great collections, really knew their stuff and were as enthusiastic as the dancers who they would join when their sets were over.
However the club was soon forced to move on to West Hampstead where it stayed for just over a year, and then wandered around the West End for occasional dances, before settling on the 100 Club in Oxford Street, where it remains even now. That’s 25 years since its inception, making it the longest running club night anywhere, ever.
Many of the attendees were mod revivalists, which gave the 6T’S crowd the youngest average age on the soul scene; another proud boast we’ve maintained to this day. They had become interested in the music through groups like the Jam, Chords, Secret Affair and Purple Hearts and at first picked up on those groups’ antecedents, the Who, Small Faces and Action. By 1979 they were eager and ready to learn more of the original music that inspired the first mods. Similarly for Northerners like myself, who had gone from Motown, Stax/Atlantic and Geno Washington straight into JJ Barnes, Major Lance and the Sequins, having Randy there as a font of knowledge and inspiration on how things had really been back in 1964 was a godsend.
So artists like Bobby Bland, Arthur Alexander, Carolyn Crawford and Irma Thomas were re-appraised and their wonderful recorded gems were revealed to us. Hitherto unknown hip jazz instrumentals by Mongo Santamaria, Jimmy McGriff and Hank Jacobs were incorporated into the mix and some mean blues from Hank Ballard, Lowell Fulson and Little Walter helped put the Rhythm into the club name. There was even the odd foray into the 50s for party time, mid tempo, black rockers from Huey Smith, Nina Simone and Etta James. Ever concerned at moving things forward and creating our own sounds, Randy programmed Theola Kilgore’s take on Chain Gang, Tutti Hill’s fabulous floater He’s A Lover and the quirky Pearl and Dean sounding jazz/soul/MOR of Bert Keyes’ Do-Do Do Bah-Ah! Well it was one big party and a large degree of fun was compulsory.

Too bleedin' right......and god bless ya' guvnor - we all owe you a pint.....and a nod to the man upstairs - Mr Cozens to you lot - my mentor and the rest of the 6T's DJ line up. You were all my role models - thanks for everything.
The first night was in Covent Garden on 17 August 1979 and the joyous, sweaty and soul-sated sell-out crowd told us that Rhythm & Soul was the way to go. Was it really that long ago????????? The Bedford Arms/ Legs/ Head - what a night - who would've thought one night would have altered the course of soul nights for the next 3 decades
However the club was soon forced to move on to West Hampstead where it stayed for just over a year, and then wandered around the West End for occasional dances, before settling on the 100 Club in Oxford Street, where it remains even now. Ah, those heady nights of debauchery at the Moonlight Club........now all has been revealed in the top right hand corner of Ady's new CD - THAT'S ME at 19 - living proof that I was once a fit bird
Bert Keyes’ Do-Do Do Bah-Ah! What a tune - and James Brown's 'Tell Me What you gonna do' and Junior Walker's 'Tune Up' that sorted the lightweights out from the hardcore dancers - I hear those tunes and I'm back on the dance floor........
Well it was one big party and a large degree of fun was compulsory.
Happy, happy days and all this remembered without the rose tinted goggles of nostalgia.......believe me, it really was THAT GOOD. Buy the CD and draw your own conclusions.... A West Hampstead devotee to the very end........Jo

Lifeline Lookback After First Year

Lifeline Lookback After First Year

How it started…….
21st of February 2004 saw the first night of the Lifeline Rare Soul All-nighters. Promoters Andy Dyson and Mick H tired of hearing the same old same every week decided to do something to promote the many upfront, rare, forgotten and thinking man’s (and woman’s) oldies and the 100’s of quality records, both cheap and expensive that dancers rarely get the chance to hear.
Having decided on the venue, Sheridans @ Dewsbury and having decided what they wanted the dancers to hear the next task was to assemble the finest crop of upfront dj’s the scene has to offer, so joining Andy and Mick were Butch, for many the finest exponent of the “newies” scene with a collection of unknowns and exclusives unrivalled, Tim Brown and Nick Stevenson. Guest for the first night was London’s Marco.

Any worries about selling the format to the punters were soon dispelled, as the first night was a sell out with the doors soon locked.

Other guests to appear at lifeline included Kev Featherstone, Tony Smith & Dean Anderson.

Cliff Steele, one of the countries most underrated DJ’s with a vast knowledge of the scene and a great collection was soon added to the line up of regulars as was Soul Sam. The promoters now with themselves, Butch, Cliff and Sam and Chalky and sometimes Nick Stevenson opening proceedings feel they have a team of DJ’s that cannot be beaten when it comes to pushing the music policy that Lifeline offers.
Mick and Andy would just like to thank all involved at Lifeline, Chalky, Heather, Claire, Mandy & Wendy, the DJ’s for making it possible, Chris and Rodz at Sheridans and last but not least the paying customers who have made Lifeline what it is.

Here’s to a successful 2005!

Two reviews from two happy punters, John Pugh and Steve Phillis!!

Despite the travelling making me really rough for the last 3 days ( and probably at least the next 3 as well ) I wouldn't have missed Saturday for the world. It's kinda hard to top the Right music, the Right venue, the Right people in attendance and run by the Right people, etc., but I'm sure they won't rest on their laurels and that it'll go from strength to strength.
Speaking to one or two who don't get as far south as even Manchester very often, I think they'll really get the benefit of having interesting guests like Marco & the forthcoming Steve G. One comment I read said "1000 pound rarity after 1000 pound rarity", and of course that's the basis of the rare soul experience, but for me I thought the 4 Tops** track was an absolute master stroke (as well as some of the other well thought out, superb but relatively available tracks, and forgotten oldies) I know this might seem at odds with some folks ideas, but the way I look at it is that you've got to have some punctuation, otherwise some of the less well known ( but brilliant) tracks can sort of blend into one another and they can lose their impact. " You gotta have a slice of plain bread every so often to appreciate how wonderful cake is" was how one person described it and that's how I see it too. If one punter can go home and dig out some cheap but wonderful track and give it another listen then that's another type of success to judge the night by. After all most of us can never hope to own a copy of lots of the tracks that will get aired, so it's nice to have a few dotted throughout the night that you can go out and track down without paying a kings ransom. I think that's why I enjoy Andy D's sets so much because he generally digs something out that fits into this category (I've probably played 'Laws of Love' at home more times in the last few months than I have in the last twenty years, purely because I'd heard and enjoyed hearing Andy play it in his set)
Having said that the main thrust of the nite for those who weren't there, was wondrous obscure soul that downright deserves to be heard, because it's just too good to be kept as a hidden gem.
At one point in the nite Max and I sat and listened to Butch's set and just melted !!!
He had two runs, think the one was five records and the other four, where it was as close to soul music perfection as you can get. Each tune just flowed perfectly into the next and it's virtually impossible to put into words the feeling they generated, the emotional experience, the sheer joy of it, in my very humble opinion it was Northern Nirvana.
I'd have gone if it had just have been Butch and Andy on their own, but I understand that other folk have their favourite dj's too, and the other dj's on the line up all 'bought something to the dance' as it were. The idea of piping the music through is a winner for the old farts like me and watching folk dash off in the middle of a conversation reminded me of myself in happier times. You know how it goes, the opening bars hit you, the drink goes on the table, fag in the ashtray, quick mumbled apology to whoever you were talking to as you zip off, literally dragged onto the floor by the time the first word of the song comes in :-)
Often tho' at most run of the mill doo's you can tell when the dj's change without looking by the music, but with this piped through idea, and the high quality maintained by ALL the dj's it had me scratching my head at times wondering who was on. Thinking about it now, that makes me realise just how good all the sets I heard were.
Finally it was great that so many true rare soul fans had made their way from all points of the compass. It makes such a difference to be able to enjoy the company of those who share a similar interpretation of this music of ours. With so many venues going on all around the country hopefully this will become the one place that every rare soul fan decides to make the effort to support ( tho' I don't think many more folk could have been fitted in ?)

Congrats Andy & Co, more power to ya !!!
John Pugh

SATURDAY 17th APRIL
2nd LIFE-LINE ALLNIGHTER — SHERIDANS - DEWSBURY

O.K. just how do you try and write a review on what’s probably the best upfront niter since Stafford, a venue the scene as been crying out for, for the past 10 years or more. A venue where the dj’s aren’t afraid to play something new and different well here we go.

Arriving early with Mick H the doors were due to open at 9.30pm but many people arrived early as it was a sell-out, by 10 pm the place was buzzing; the record bar was crammed to capacity with both dealers and punters, the main dance floor was jammed solid and the atmosphere was electric.

This reminded me of the same atmosphere you got as you walked through the casino doors, we even had the condensation dripping from the roof, the floor was packed too capacity with dancers from every corner of the country, London, Edinburgh, Norwich, Manchester, Notts, Leicester, Wales etc. Everyone there all to listen too what can only be classed as the best and rarest new sounds in the Country, The dj’s on the night where Nick Stevenson, Mick H, Andy Dyson, Kitch, Butch, and guest Soul Sam. There must have been near on a million £’s worth of vinyl behind the decks the music policy upfront new 60’s 70’s and rare and underplayed oldies, and that’s just what we got.

What followed was a true soul fan’s dream come true, 9 ½ hours of pure soul the crowd knowledgeable and appreciative gave every dj and record the recognition they deserved, for those people who haven’t been I say open your minds and visit this venue, as the records that are played here are the oldies of the future. The atmosphere on the night was the best I’ve sampled at a niter in many a year.

Not one person I spoke to had a bad word to say about the music or the dj’s, some people may think me bias as I’ve known both Mick and Andy for more years than I can remember, special mentions to Gilly ,great to see you out again mate also to Dallas daughter of Fran who gave me her top 5 and with both mellow souls and Mac Staten in the top 2 there’s a future for the scene yet, also a special mention to Mandy and Wendy who greeted on the door, these girls worked tirelessly on the door also Chris and Rodz whom without their cooperation the night wouldn’t have been possible.
The spot’s where brilliant one after the other big sounds, unknowns, rare oldies, each received with enthusiasm from the floor, which was packed solid right up till 7.30am then we moved too the record/chill out room until 9.30am. This is by far the best niter in years get a ticket for Junes event and see for yourselves, what is the dj’s play list’s the calibre of which you’ll never see at any other niter in the country. Thanks to Mick and Andy for the sight the inspiration and the guts to put on such an excellent night. This venue is a breath of fresh air too the scene as there are far too many niters you go to play the same old time tested top 500 played out oldies I say too everyone open your minds and ears visit this brilliant venue as it really is the scene’s life line

Rating 100% pure soul

Offical Play List Wilton 21st Jan. 2005,

THE WILTON, 21 JANUARY 2005
So, the Wilton all-nighter’s January edition kicked off another year in good style. Good attendance, nice atmosphere, and a lot of good feedback on the night, judging by the regulars I spoke to.
Guest DJs were all in championship form, Dave Welding being the first on. He played an excellent hour and seemed to enjoy his first performance up in West Yorkshire.
Andy Dyson was on fire – absolutely brilliant hour by the South Yorkshire man. The newer discoveries he played really were top drawer. Great to hear not one thing that you’d heard for the very first time and liked, but several in a row, mixed in with some nice crossover stuff, and a well thought out assortment of quality under-played oldies.
I only caught the first quarter of Dean’s spot, but he’s always had some good stuff to play.
I’ll just jot down a few tunes of what was played on the night and let people judge for themselves.

The Wilton would like to thank all the people who have attended for the last decade, for making it what it is.

Promoters Andy Dyson and Mick H tired of hearing the same old same every week decided to do something to promote the many upfront, rare, forgotten and thinking man's (and woman's) oldies and the 100's of quality records, both cheap and expensive that dancers rarely get the chance to hear. Having decided on the venue, Sheridans @ Dewsbury and having decided what they wanted the dancers to hear the next task was to assemble the finest crop of upfront dj's the scene has to offer, so joining Andy and Mick were Butch, for many the finest exponent of the "newies" scene with a collection of unknowns and exclusives unrivalled, Tim Brown and Nick Stevenson. Guest for the first night was London's Marco. Any worries about selling the format to the punters were soon dispelled, as the first night was a sell out with the doors soon locked. The spot's where brilliant one after the other big sounds, unknowns, rare oldies, each received with enthusiasm from the floor, which was packed solid right up till 7.30am then we moved too the record/chill out room until 9.30am. This is by far the best niter in years get a ticket for Junes event and see for yourselves, what is the dj's play list's the calibre of which you'll never see at any other niter in the country. Thanks to Mick and Andy for the sight the inspiration and the guts to put on such an excellent night. This venue is a breath of fresh air too the scene as there are far too many niters you go to play the same old time tested top 500 played out oldies I say too everyone open your minds and ears visit this brilliant venue as it really is the scene's life line Rating 100% pure soul K.T.F. Newport Soul Nite

Golden Eye Soul Club- Walkabout Bar, Bridge St, Newport, Wales. I was one of the DJs at this soul nite on Saturday 22nd January. The nite was run by Dan, Simon and Mike and a great venue it was with a good wooden dancefloor and well run bar. The music was tops spun by Dan, Simon,Vince Ayres, Andy Hutchins and myself. Music ranged from across the board such as Soul Bros Incorporated, Righteous Bros, Lou Pride, Jackie Beavers and Bobby Kline. Everybody seemed to have a good time but unfortunatly numbers were low due to the weather, which was too white for my liking! What Id say to you soulies, look out for the next one here as it is well worth the trip! Keep The Faith- Matt (Trowbridge)

Feb On The Scene out - info and a quick look at the articles

Latest issue of "On The Scene" is out and about, with an interesting article on a long running saga The new booklet format is a great improvement, meaning that you just dont get the latest event info free of charge but also now get some informative and enjoyable reading thrown in as well, which has to be a good thing!

This month features the usual soul, mod and scooter events easy to look up, listing and also a 2 page article billed as the "Ian Levine and the four vandals-the true story". Which is interesting reading as the author has gone for a "true and unbiased view" and includes bits like Ginger detailing how he paid £800 and the details behind him buying it and what really went on behind the curtains at togetherness.

Some interesting points come up in this article, such as levine appearing to admit he lied about the whole thing from the begining but claims was to prove a point and not for finanical gain.

As said its all interesting stuff and whilst does cover most aspects, there are a few things not mentioned that may cause some to doubt levines claims.

More on this later. Anyway back to On the Scene, should be out and about at a venue near you soon, and as always anything that is free, usefull and informative to the soul fan cant be a bad thing!

Im Gonna Make You Love Me - Gladys Knight&The Pips Berry Gordy's genius was to establish a music company combining the two distinct elements he knew best: one, family -a family of labels driven by a family of producers and performers - and, two, songs - an in-house publishing company. One could feed the other, meaning Motown's growing stable of talent always had songs to sing: a hot song was often covered endlessly, while a song that may not have the right feel could be matched up with another singer. Motown Sings Motown Treasures offers an extraordinary glimpse into the process, featuring 45 songs that ended up as hits for someone else. Some are the original versions - who knew that wannabe-pop-star Tommy Good cut the original vocal to the Four Tops' "Ask The Lonely" to their same backing track? Some are original song sketches: Imagine getting an insider's look into how Marvin Gaye shaped "Baby I'm For Real" into a No. 1 hit for The Originals - by handing completely different lyrics to Bobby Taylor. Or how the Isley Brothers were first given "What Becomes Of The Brokenhearted" - also with very different words. Some tracks are simply awesome covers, from Marvin Gaye's sweet take of "My Girl" to blues belter Hattie Littles, an early Motown act, getting nasty with Barrett Strong's "Money." Included with this new collection is a terrific booklet with track-by-track liner notes with exclusive vault details that further tell the song's stories, plus recording dates and an introductory essay by Grammy® nominee Adam White. Of the set's 45 cuts, 21 were previously issued as Motown Sings Motown Treasure Vol. 1, with scant information, in fall 1998. That album was quickly deleted and has been out of print for several years. "Ask Any Man" was previously issued on 45; the Spinners' "Shop Around" and the Vandellas' "The Tracks Of My Tears" were previously issued on vinyl in the Eighties. Message from the Family of Derek Allen

I would like to thank everyone for their kind thoughts, condolences, cards, website messages and floral tributes. I would like to thank everyone for their kind thoughts, condolences, cards, website messages and floral tributes.

I know Derek would have been both touched and amazed at all those who came to the funeral, especially so near to Christmas. He would have been suitably embarrassed at so much attention. I am so sure he was watching especially when the sun shone through the window near the end of the service. I am extremely grateful to those friends who arranged the venue and the food afterwards. Derek is irreplaceable in our lives; he loved his family and adopted my relatives as his own. Iam sure, by the thoughts that have been expressed over the last month that many of you will remember him for quite some time to come. He was a kind, thoughtful, honest and gentle man who loved his music and will be greatly missed. He was taken too soon and I cannot imagine my life without him. Paula Allen

Sleepless Nights Newsletter Dec 04 Dublin Northern Soul

Yo ho ho folks. well what a week that was. Our christmas party was looming and one slight technical hitch.....emm we didnt have a venue..... Id had a bad feeling on the eve and decided to check with the Gingerman and finally yes they confirmed we didnt have a confirmed booking. Call it bad luck, stress, problem of not having a permanent home or me just being a complete ^osser panic stations.... what will i tell John D and all.
All roads led to freakoutville then I rang Doyles to see if upstairs was anyway ready yet. "No but weve just bought pub next door, can let you have their function room" And so it was the faithful trundled into yet another temporary venue albeit right next door to our "home". A packed location, typical Dublin party mood we got on with it. Got home soberish, forgot keys, Donna at relatives i decided best i broke a window. Long story...
And on a rare weekend with two nights of soul we had a charity night in the Commercial Rowing Club SN + McScoots. Early on it was Scooter sounds gratiously making way for the Northern. Great to see Paul Mulholland&Paul Grant in the mainroom and some dinosaurs making their way upstairs to the modern sounds of Ross, Joe, Brian&more... this was a feel good night with no barriers. Sorry Paddy Kane you didnt win the raffle!!!!!!!!!!
