Sad News Tony Banks RIP

Sad news - Tony Banks (real name Tony Newton) Yorkshire's legendary Northern Soul DJ passed away in Leeds on Monday 7th June. Tony, a DJ from the very start of the scene in the 1960s, is lately best remembered as the promoter / dj of the highly successful monthly soul night held at the Brighouse Ritz, which he organised for nearly 6 years before being forced to retire through ill health in September 2003. Tony's funeral will be held at Rawdon Crematorium in Leeds on Monday 14th June at 3:40 pm.

Various Artists, Standing In The Shadows Of Motown: Deluxe Edition

Various Artists, Standing In The Shadows Of Motown: Deluxe Edition
Back in the 60s the session musician was king. Think of the Wrecking Crew (who played on everything from Pet Sounds to Frank Sinatra) or the Stax house band, or the likes of Jummiy Page who acted as guitar-slinger for just about every mid-60s Brit Hit from "You Really Got Me" to "Sunshine Superman".
Until the release of Allan Slutskys film, Standing In The Shadows Of Motown, most of the session musicians from Berry Gordys  Motown Snakepit were relegated to dusty sleevenotes; and tragically, in the case of bass guitar lynchpin James Jamerson, a decline into alcoholism and homelessness. Jamerson, the Funk Brothers driving melodic heartbeat, died a broken man in 1983.
The real treasures here lie on CD Two, which is essentially an hours worth of instrumentals direct from the Snakepit. To hear prototypes of "My Girl" or "I Was Made To Love Her" is to hear history in the making - segments of genius rivalling any other achievement from the era. From  the funktastic wah-wah of "I Cant Get Next To You" to the jazz-based elegance of "Mercy Mercy Me", the sheer depth of what these unsung musicians achieved gradually becomes clear. In the pantheon of pop music they are benchmarks that will stand forever.
Best of all is a closing version of The Temptations "Youre My Everything" consisting solely of Jamersons godlike bass harmonising with Eddie Kendricks and Dave Ruffin. That human beings could create such sounds seems almost miraculous. It remains the ultimate transcendental moment on a CD chock full of them.

Lori Burton

Together with Pam Sawyer, Lori Burton formed one of the better New York pop/rock songwriting teams of the 1960s, although not too many of their songs were widely known hits.Their "I Ain't Gonna Eat Out My Heart Anymore" gave the Rascals their first chart entry; "Baby Let's Wait," also done by the Rascals, gave the Royal Guardsmen a hit; Patti LaBelle & the Blue Bells did "All or Nothing"; and Prince Harold did "Forget About Me." Burton and Sawyer were briefly signed to Motown as songwriters and were one of the few (if not the only) female production teams on the New York rock scene in the mid-'60s.
Burton was also a recording artist and is most known as the lead voice on the Whyte Boots' "Nightmare," one of the most accurate approximations of the Shangri-Las ever recorded. She was also a very credible blue-eyed pop-soul singer, though, with a low and sometimes raunchy voice. She began recording as a solo act for Roulette in the mid-'60s and in 1967, issued a hard-to-find album, Breakout, on Mercury. That LP was impressive, well-produced pop-soul with New York's sophisticated brand of pop-rock production, and it is unfortunate that Burton did not have the chance to develop further as a recording act in her own right.
Burton and her husband, recording engineer Roy Cicala, began writing and producing together in the late '60s. Cicala became a top engineer in the industry and owner of the Record Plant (East) Studios in New York City, working on several John Lennon albums. Burton sang backup vocals on Lennon's "#9 Dream" in the mid-'70s, and recorded some tracks around that time that Lennon helped produce with Cicala. A couple of these numbers, which are poor disco-style tunes, appear on the CD packaged with Kristofer Engelhardt's book Beatles Undercover, which documents the Beatles' appearances on records by other artists

DMSC 22 May 04 Look Back and latest news

As first one for a while, bit of a rambling thing as takes in event and more
Yep, 6 months on and it was back to the Springfield, a long time coming, enjoyable feeling?
Well not till about 9pm to be honest, the run in to this was not entirely trouble free (see elsewhere for background)after a exyended gap and problems with dates, clashes and all sorts of stuff, have to say was a slight element of doubt creeping in to the run up to this one.
Anyway things fell together and on a sunny North Wales evening found meself back at the springfield car park.
Think it was Dave Rimmer who once called Springfield a "brilliant venue" well after the recent refurbishment, it is now just a bit more smarter, espically the main room, which also now appears even more roomer, walking thru door and it even smelt smart
The Two Dave's and Eddie as always were there and getting sound system sorted out, dunno if were new lowered roof but sounded best I ever heard it thru out the night. Top job there.
And thanks to them the nite saw the return of the exiled monkey banner, which for last 6 months was in hiding somewhere in depths of Manchester.
As said was suffering fom the pre-event clear head doubts, even Sue my wife had done a runner from this one, thankfully Steve and Julie f answered shout for help earlier on and took care of door side for the whole nite. Thanks go out for a great job.
DJ wise, aim as always to give you best in quality exciting rare soul, no change in policy or ought, but now at the point where at every nearly all the djs invovled are monkey regulars as well
Annie A kicked off the first shift, and did a cracking job with nice mix from her box getting things underway,
ten plays from Ann below
Anthony&The Aqua Lads ,I remember,Gold Bee
Barbara Brown,So in love,Carnival
Contessas,I keep on keepin' on,George Clements Prod,
Leon Haywood,You don't have to see me cry,Decca
Barbara Jackson,Big man,Warner Bros
Ertha Kitt,Anyway you want it, baby,Musicor
The Kittens,It's gotta be love,ABC
Reparata + The Delrons,I can hear the rain,Rca Victor
Mark Thatcher,Tell him you got someone else,Diamond
Danny Boy Thomas,My love is over,The Groovy
Thanks to Ann for getting things under way,
First thru the door think were Sid, Bernadette and mucker - bit of a relief as nightmare scenarios were running thru head. Place slowly got busy and then round 9 ish pace picked up, most suprising turn up was Colin and Shirley as last weekend was putting some haphazard plan to get them over involving hot air balloons over pennines so chuffed to see made it.
Andy Killock walked thru door at 9.15 picked up the torch round 9 16, his set went something like Bang Bang Bang Bang - rare soul ear assualt
here's Andy's plays
Devotions - De de do dop - Nation
Delites - Lover - Cuppy
Intensions - She needs somebody - USA
Cashmeres - Don't let the door - Hem
Timmy Carr - Workin - Kee
Deltour - Sweet and lovely - Starville
Shaddows - Together again - United Audio
Jimmy Burns - I really love you - Erica
Lou Pride - Get the message - C/U
Blendels - You need love - Dontee
Intensions - You say that you love me - USA
Celebreties - I choose you - Boss
Precisions - Sugar ain't sweet - Drew
Utopias - Girls are against me - Lasalle
Shametts - Don't waste your time - Gold Dust
Jesse James - Are you gonna leave me - Shirley
Empires - You're on top girl - Candi
Caveliers - Tighten-up baby - Shrine
Emory and the Dynamics - Lets take a look at our life - Peachtree
Vicky Labat - Gotta keep hanging on - Shagg
Professionals - Thats why I love you - Groove City
Victorians - I want to belong to you - Rowena
Damon Fox - Packin up - Fairmont
Again many thanks to Andy for dishing out the above
By now the pre-event fears had been washed away by lager and the sight of many regulars. Steve T fellow DMSC team bloke couldn't show till later on due to work but quickly made up for it.
All Era Room - was on the go at this time, after the last one went so well, feeling was it was goining to be more of same, but while music continued in same upward vein, attendance wasn't up to last one. Possibly just plain down to way ratio of 60/70s fans on the nite. Chico Pete Bangor,Phil Blacknell, Mark Speakman were players on nite and continued music wise from where left off
Pete Bangor (Roberts) Plays below
Frankie Knuckles-What's going on
Siani-Get Up on The Floor
Kashif-About To Fall In Love
Patti Labelle-New Day
Marcus Valentine-Gone
Joe-More and More
Stacey Mallory-People Of The World

Back to main room Ritchie Andrew was up at 10 and after Andy K set the pace, picked up th etorch and kept the nite moving with a great selection and a great mix

lad teens - keep on rollin -cadillac
mamselles -open up your heart - abc
athens rogue - she could love me- stop
jo ann garret -whole new plan - chess
chevrons - Love i love you - mmc
Again have to say thanks to Ritchie for the above, great stuff, by now it was 11pm and so far night was on a roll
John Weston up and at them next, gave out a bit more of a 70s feel after Ritchies more 60's based spot. By now floor packed as it should be with stuff he was pushing out and am sure stayed that way right to end
Almost a part of the dmsc furniture Carl Willingham was up and at them for last hour, someone once said prove of a great dj is how wide a range and Carl did this with yet another set which had a different feel than others caught recently. Great stuff,.
New management and new staff of hotel, meant it had to be a on the dot finish which Carl did with "can't get over these memories" finishing the nite followed by all in showing their appreciation to all the djs for what to me was a tremendous night.
Crowd - well with chaos had getting this one of the ground thought be touch and go, but though slow at first it picked up and while not the busiest have had, after all probs reckon was a good one
Usual dodgy regulars showing up from all over Uk,
Few think online name checks not mentioned above off top of head
Joe Dunlop - he is monkey
ztsc crew - zero tolerence sc smiling here as every time hear name keep having visions of them going round giving it "what you looking at"
Kev and Karen S
Gaye and Colin
Stuart I
Martin, Chris,
Cel Colin Jean -will email you photos
Karl, Kit
Chris, Stevie C and gang
Joan and Tony - hope car sorted?
bound to missed loads
Odds :
ZTSC -Zero Tolerence Soul Club- good things about their recent Black Lion Hotel event in Manchester - sounds like on a winner
On the Scene - new one out with new mod section
New Weekly Summer Soul Nite on Thursdays to be launched soon at Kinmel Bay - more details when get them
Soul-Seek: Gaye passed on that events inc Station, Royal and Warrens all going well - details www.soul-seek.co.uk
camera - results from digital camera mean it is time to be sacked or at least dig out the manual
end bit
ok think its now about 2 years since kicked off monkey, as said at begining we're just doing things our own way, all based on us all getting a nite of exciting quality rare soul, and having a laugh with muckers when doing it
thats it bottom line
Think thats what got last nite, feedback got on nite said so
Of course as always say my view on things is always a bit different as involved in organising things, all organising stuff and so on makes it so.
So feel free to pass on your view if there
Hopefully get plays from John and Carl later on and will add
NEXT DATE
In a rare spirit of organistaion had confiirmed the next date and annouced it so on nite, unfortunately it seems that there may be a unforseen problem with this and are currently sorting..business as normal there!
Will annouce soonest
feedback
We had a Brilliant night last night, the All Era Room was Better than ever, shame there weren't more people there. Probably something to do with the cup final !!
Well Done another Great night out ! We will be there on the 9th July.

As always thanks to all

Drunken Monkey Soul Club

As always if want latest news, score or word on ought monkey, as always just ask any of the DMSC team.
Just say have had a fair few laughs hearing what "others" say the score is.....

Clashes :

May notice the orig date has changed, purely due to fact was clashing with Soul Sam/Brian Ellis event close by Silverwings event at Broughton, this was entirely our own fault.
Cause of this the dates in "On the Scene" are wrong, please spread the word that 22 May is the date not the one in the guide (as said entirely our fault)

North Wales:

The DMSC is North Wales Coast based, and also holds other events round the North Wales coast and beyond , all monkey related events say so on flyers, ads etc, if it hasnt got that on it then it aint got Monkey

Future Events

Llandudno - Next DMSC Llandudno Soul Nite is coming up soon

Some feedback received already

We should be thanking you!!!

It was a brilliant night, the music superb throughout....absolute class!

Wandered into the back room half way through the night, not really expecting much but Phil Blacknell behind the decks had the place bouncing. I understand it stayed like this throughout.

I was too scared of missing the goodees in the main room, so I didn't tear myself away again.

Everyone I spoke to enjoyed the night, and agreed it was one of the best (second only to the very first night, methinks....although I did miss the last one which I heard was also a stormer).

Such a good night, and right on my door step. Keep doin' what you're doin'

DMSC Look Back Aug 2003 -Storming nite

Absolutely Storming Nite" - In fact thats all I have been able to say to everyone I met over the weekend....
They must have thought I had been brainwashed or something. Told everyone that they HAVE to be at the next one... even the 80 year old guy next to me in the post office this morning.. lol Superb DMSC Team job guys..... Thoroughly enjoyed it - Its gonna be hard to follow that one... but Im confident you will.

Managed to take a few photies - not sure if they are what you want - but I just snapped a few as quick as poss coz I didnt want to waste a minute longer than I had to, away from the dancefloor. Some of us took the Monkey spirit with us on to a couple of other events on Sunday and Monday night too. Myself, Steve & Johnny J - gave about 250- 300 potential Monkeys, a Soul Bashing at the Wellmans Club in Anglesey on Sunday night, and carried it on to The Sportsmans Arms (again in Anglesey) on Monday night.

All in All a Fabulous weekend - and it certainly could not have got off to a better start than the Springfield Event. Thanks. Al (Salzz)

A couple of pics from Al, (thanks) the rest will be added to the gallery

filling up or the lull

Ingrid, Bob h (possibly), and also Cel ( who is as always busy sorting out all his prev weeks "approvals" that have just been returned)

Just my view on last nite, its written for Drunken Monkey Soul Club members like, so its bit lengthy as also a fair few things like info and news that like to pass on to members.
Well what was this one like? Initial feedback have had goes like below Best time since Prestatyn weekender, pure magic, place was bouncing, I love this place, we need a ****** , no where else, is this the wedding reception?

As involved with dmsc organising all I can say is on above ....too right, totally agree! Reason is, we do dmsc for pure enjoyment, we enjoy listening to quality rare soul and having a good crack, last nite certainly had that. Still buzzing on the nite now, certainly one if not the best one in my view. Fair few going ons before this event, and heard that was a few rumours going round, as always we say if any member wants to know what the score is , just ask one of the team.

Theres a bit at end about happenings with venue. The Actual Nite A nite of all sorts, starting off with me forgetting allsorts, and then shock of turning up with Stevie T and Johnny being there early, chilling with lager. Dave and Eddie were on ball with sound system, those who remember the last one will understand why they didnt wire it into the hotels inbuilt sound system this time, phase "blew the roof off" fits last time Sue was under pressure to perform on the desk, with vital parts of the DMSC team missing, Julie and Dave were both awol. But got thru it, though not much cross stitching. The hotel seemed to have had another complete change of staff, so was odd prob or two early on, but soon sorted. Draw the curtains, move tables, get Johnny to kick off with the "its 8pm so have some of this" spot. Pint of lager please.....And we were back in swing of it Right scene set, thats enough of logical format, will now go all over the place, stuff as it pops up.

Main Room Nite Of Rare Soul Violence?

Well we were not talking about going thru the motions to memories , we were talking about getting assaulted by hard-core quality rare soul, aim that post-monkey feeling off just having your head kicked in by the event, we were after when you left, your head and body knew you been to monkey. With a DJ line completely made up of regular Monkey punters, Mick H, Robbo, Chic, Steve T, Johnny J, these dmsc members knew just what the score was, and fellow members knew it was going to be good. Reckon going by the look of members at the end of nite we achieved our aim. Lull before the storm at first, bit quiet early on, floor getting used, Johnny J did a great opening set, setting things up nicely for the mayhem. Chic from Shrewsbury was down for the 9 -10 "rare soul hero " set and while still filling up at start, the stuff he threw out was hitting them as soon as walked thru door and by the end of his spot, he had the place revved up and that monkey "feel" was building up...... Steve 00 Thomas was up next, we managed to drag him away from causing mayhem at north west venues, sack the organizing, just work that turntable, he picked up the that monkey "feel", and away he went, the "feel" was still building up and up, Throw in a quick soundbite from steve t "did you hear the clapping? played "the game is over" looked down on the floor about 80 to 100 dancing but theyre all looking up at the stage and singing ......magic moment!!" kicking now but still building up , now turn of Robbo carrying on with the quality, place was red hot by now the soul just kept coming, a few had to take time outside, still it went on , midnite and now Mick H was up, no remorse, with Mick H unleasing all sorts of damage, last time on caused a storm, this time talking hurricanes, such was buzz went 15 mins over. DMSC team as in meself this time did the normal "monkey till you drop", bit of a short one just popular up for it dmsc stuff, old days of stretching finish out by a hour seem to be over as manager was up on the dot at 1 30, and the plea of come on just one more didnt cut no ice. So bit of a sudden stop saw the end of the nite. DJs : Thanks to all djs, as said one of the good things about last and also other nites is that all the djs are just plain old regular members of the dmsc, they have in past queued , put their money on table and had good crack. And afterwards as always was great to hear that they seemed to enjoy it just as much as the crowd, if not more!

Some plays, bit light on details as all over the place most of nite, awaiting some stuff thrown up/sent in later, learnt not to trust my memory - as takes less time and less mistakes -(Shirley - need your help and notes here girl!)

Johnny 8-9 up soonest

Chic 9-10 work in progress to get plays

Steve 00 Thomas

10-11 john lee hooker-send me your pillow-stateside, sonny till= hey little woman-cp, parsians=twinkle little star-demon hot, rick sheperd- can we share it -columbia, sound masters-lonely lonely-juliet brown sugar- the game is over-capitol

Robbo 11-12 work in progress to get plays

Mick H 12-0115

Will email them in, can read 100 club playlist if need idea.

He had just stepped off the plane from holiday hours before turning up! Lot of laughs with Mick, espically the fact that cause of names similarity, people have been asking me if just bought Cheatin Kind. Rumours that I answered yes, had a quick shave and been accepting bookings and appearing as him are totally false! His last play (details sadly totally gone) had the unique effect on Sue , up from behind the table demanding info on just what it was. That doesnt happen often, all can recall as a bit hazy, even though did shout it when saying the thanks, it was a one-off, by male artist and was a "stop you in your tracks"sound. "

Monkey till you drop" finish No suprises just 15/20 mins of popular all dmsc events good time plays from meself - usual hughes rubbish so easy to recall, no suprises no pretence no thought stuff, isonics, llandudno outlaws, 3 lonely monkeys, smallest monkey alive, im monkeying home, jr monkey, choke that monkey ex-san remo strings cover, b j thomas - keep it monkey, aint that monkey enough and ......

Crowd

Come 11 place was well packed, all members seemed well up for it, as always loads of dmsc regs there, plus as always the mix of crowd knocks us out Wide age range, all styles, soul fans inc collectors, djs, promoter types, all era room exiles, and so on. But all in tune with that same thirst for quality soul and enjoying themselves. Someone commented about suprised it being a 50/50 mix sex wise, thought was on about all sorts, but turned out was on about gender, never noticed really but cause was suprised thought I mention it. Online members - as always good to meet up with members behind the emails , Kim and his gang from Northamptonshire which believe is somewhere in leicester, Dave from Blackpool, who was on a night mission throughout this part of uk, wont say any more till checked how public his actual mission is:) And with a bit of a drive to get all new members emails, and mobiles think can say theres a fair bunch of us online dmsc types. Many characters deserve a mention, many travellers, many muckers, many laughs, but have to pass as to mention them all, well as getting to stage where all crowd knows all, it will just take too long Rest assured all usual DMSC rogues were well out in force, north wales types, midlands, north west, yorkshire, south of brum, Scotland (kit the exile) Good to see our famous regulars were there, This couple have only missed one event, (were on lookout for 100%s members got a few ideas but let us know if done them all) and as live somewhere near leicester (well st ives actually), gotta say we are impressed. Hope enjoyed the vip treatment Was good to see early bird award winners Colin and Shirley all way from Halifax there, almost knocking on the door, famous for well respected Yorkshire Riders, were full of plans to keep that quality soul flag flying over there in that land of industrial estates and crap road signs.
Get a mention as last time in north wales they had to suffer a 730 am tour of the Great Orme , we thought had lost them for good.

Special mention gotta go out to a bunch from Telford way, well we knew they were hardcore dmsc, but didnt realise just how hard. Remember those small monkeys used to hang from stage, well they didnt last long, but seems that one of these monkeys has had time of his life. These Telford girls, laid claim to him, seems this blue monkey now has a life of his own, rigged out clothes wise, now wherever they go, he goes with them, seems hes living the life. Even got his own suitcase been on holiday and all sorts. After hearing that it wasnt just Roger Banks, or those kids on that estate causing havoc with those monkey flyer masks, seems Telford was subject to a nite of monkey havoc as well, was laughing, had 5 of them telling it at same time, been promised pics of this renegrade blue monkey on his travels, looking forward to that and will push up. Greets to all else talked to, know missed a few out wanted to catch up with, but organising things got in way of stuff,

Vinyl wise

a fair few individual sales boxes, no major dealers taking advantage of that free entry though, just say if wanna flog a lot of stuff, pick up new regulars, see a few fresh boxes/content, ask likes of Dave Rimmer Roger Banks and more, how they got on flogging at the monkey Anyone grabbed any good buys? didnt look much meself as too busy trying to offload but been told was some tasty stuff available, with a distinct lack of rubbish

 Flyers and odds

Lot of laughs at some of comments of first bunch of flyers, time was tight so pushed out loads with just pic of smashed monkey and date. Got some great feedback on remarks from non-dmsc types passed on from the dmsc flyer people. (thanks for help) No prize winners for the next version we pushed out, was beer on offer if got info right to me last nite, next one be out soon Thanks to all who helped spread the word, as always if want help spread word with flyer hand out, get in touch, hopefully we will get em out well in time.for next one.

While on flyers Kev S turned up with handfull of flyers for todays event at Zanzibars , with usual guess the artist, easy one this time, must be as I got it straight away Phone on door appears to have been out of order, though other numbers should have been ok. endnote Well there you go, just the way I saw nite, all feedback have had on nite and after, so far seems to go with above. On behalf of all involved with setting nite up, just like to say many thanks to all for turning up and while know a few couldnt make it, have to say thanks for all the support we get off all members. end of day its your monkey cause you are the monkey

See you in November or sooner! non-members wanna know more just ask a member or email us at dmsc@soul-source.net

Drunken Monkey Soul club Members News

Few things and info just like to pass on as said in review thanks go to all our members for last nite, it was a good one! Members All members should have got email newsletter and sms info. Say "should " as had a few probs with data, plus many have updated phones, changed emails etc. If not get in touch and will add. Merchandise: Had a few qs if us chancers are going into the "togetherness" buisness. Seems that monkey related clothing is popping up here and there. Well ...just a straight forward "No its nought to do with us". Cause of our name it seems that can get "monkey" related stuff all over the place, Seen some well smart t-shirts, tops and such, and all have been unique monkey stylish designs as you would expect:) Right laugh as many been trying to get the most odd, unusual or unique design No danger of us branching out to the merchandise side. Doubt if we could do it cheaper for members than all the shops sell it, at so no need. Photos Ann and Trev should be passing on some snaps from nite soonest. Plus have had offer of others. If got any snaps wanna share, pass them on either via email or mail

Other dmsc events coming up -full details when avail at www.soul-source.co.uk

DMSC Bangor Soul At The Social - First Friday of month 05 Sep all styles good time northern nite Guests Ritchie Andrew, Gerry Hogan, Dave EE, regs Johnny J and Mike H

DMSC Llandudno Soul Nite - returns in Sep - details asp

Other events : Eddie and Dave asked to pass on details of their All Era event in September , sounds a good one, but have to wait for full details once dig out flyers!

Zanzibars tonite - all details on event guide and reads like the place to be for bank holiday sunday

Future Unfortunately had a few kicks recently with some of our "in progress" planning, we are now sussing out various stuff, The Springfield is our permanent venue, the next one here will be along the same format as previous. But as always watch this space...

The next Sat 08 Nov -The Monkey - DMSC at Springfield (date changed from fri 07) i

ts monkey again with top djs, top sounds, top people Details almost 100% Flyers - any members who like to pass on flyers give us a shout, Clashes Few asked why after all our usual carefull planning, did we clash with a event close by. The answer gave was "**** knows", first knew about it when it popped up on event guide on soul source site, shame they couldnt take time to get in touch while posting it. Our date was annouced 8 months ago, if they had got in touch we could have worked together, transport afterwards etc. But they didnt. All a bit disapointing

Accomodation/help/lifts If anyone wants to have extended monkey, can book at hotel or if need by we can help out with details of cheap guestys, free couches, after-event going ons and so on, and suss out lifts Lifts - same again, if having probs getting to monkey, may be able to help. Either with lifts from other members or suss out the famous dmsc minibus service Going Ons - Event was a fairly landmark one, after the May Bank Holiday event, which reckon was one of the best, on a high, we then suffered from a late short notice cancellation by the hotel of our June Event, and then also this Aug bank holiday event was under threat as well. Will just say that our planning was on the ball and not the problem.

As also had just passed the one year mark, team did do a fair bit of thinking, events being cancelled at short notice wasnt welcome and plans, options, ideas were thought about, think due to this and as always asking what members think , we did hear later off several rumours going around. Bound to happen, with the organisers living in a area stretching 150 miles along North Wales Coast and North West, members uk wide, and as theres always plans/ideas going on to make the DMSC even better sometimes stuff does the rounds. All we say everytime to every rumour, story, info....... Wanna know the score ? Whole dmsc is wide open, just ask. Ok so in end managed to sort out hotel whats going on and retirieve our orignal booking, (but lost the 2nd room for this). We did have plans to enhance this event, "the summer of monkey love" ring any bells? But to be honest with all other events going on, after looking at it harder didnt seem viable.

Anyway thats what was occuring, all future plans are firm . If heard any rumour of moving, quitting, last one, ... look at them serious for 5 secs, then just smile Annivesary (as was asked about) - 12 months of monkey passed by in june and to mark this grand occasion we decided to celebrate the event by not having one, it seemed to make sense Drink Promotion : Well it was good while it lasted, apparently as the management told us, there is a crackdown on "encouraging binge" drinking, stuff like happy hours and so on can have a effect on the licence. Not a lot we can do bout it, so all can say is that was the last 2 for 1. Website Stuff- Plans to improve dmsc web site for members, along with new features time availbility is the kicker. Suggestions welcome

Thats All

As always welcome any feedback, requests, suggestions, and so on. Email us at  till the next one...

Look back xmas monkey dec 2002

Lookback Xmas Monkey Dec 2002

Ok here we go with a look back at last nites xmas monkey. 8 o clock doors open, few early people already in, Not attempting much vinyl info, as still scrambled and as a lot of nite was spent darting about, was a case of missing a lot of vinyl going ons First up was Colin Wood one of promoters of the great Halifax Yorkshire Riders Club, got to say many thanks to Colin, fairly long story but end of day Colin put in a lot of effort to do this spot and know myself and Steve really appreciated this. And so it seemed did the early punters, numbers bit sluggish at first, so dancefloor bit underused. But Col dished out a great set, with many passing on appreciative comments .

Nice one and many thanks again for the support Colin. Have to mention Shirley as always good bounce and just when thought had finally got rid of riders flyers…. Big things going on at bar by now, with the monkey 2 4 1 bar promotion going on to 9 30. Numbers were picking up, and also the Chameleon (second) Room with new format “all era soul” was into full swing. Sue with help from Janine at first then Julie had the door thing going well smooth, cash, free cd, xmas raffle, Dave F doing his bit as well

Next up was Brian Ellis, resident just down the road at Broughton along with Soul Sam. This outing hitting a more 60s format, from bits what I saw/heard all really good stuff. And since have heard a fair few well good remarks. DMSC Regular Rob Thomas up and at them next, vinyl retention at alltime low at moment, even his first 45 which can remember saying no way will forget this has gone.Help! By now crowd wise numbers were up on last one and as had passed that oh so satisfying mark called “break even” it was a case of relax

Main guest Dave Rimmer was up for next hour and did a great set, afterwards said how much he enjoyed it says lines of “had a feeling of being let loose”. Vinyl managed to grab top 5.from nite. 1. Brooks Brothers - Looking For A Woman 2. Magnetics - I Have A Girl 3. Vondells - Hey Girl 4 The Caressors - I just cant stay a 5. Little Charles and Sidewinders -The Loner - Decca - think Dave said first time he played this - could be dodgy info Steve T on hearing Caressors did his now familar trick of letting it slip that has a copy of this at home somewhere, I did my now familar reaction of shaking my head and wondering if he was sent to torment me! And then was sure that he was, as said cost him 4 quid. Was going to reply stroking my chin, popular Rotherham spin possibly round 1980 but as didn’t know that till 15 mins ago didn’t

Andy Rix returning from his travels was back on main stage and pushed out a great set, interesting one of nite was a “other” version of “I’d think it over twice” which said recently aquired, of course straight away asked Andy details and then, yes straight away forgot them, some other interesting sides, hopefully Andy will fill in details (cop out yeah i know !) Crying Time, The Hurting Is Over, and more monkey were out and about. Great stuff top form.

Finishing off nite was the 30 min “monkey till you drop” spot, bit of a change, in past guy doing local dj spot did it, but steve and meself do it now as felt was missing a bit of contunity.

First had the xmas raffle to get outta way and first winner was Stuart from St Ives who won the ten 45s soul pack, the next up winner choose as prize the bottle of wine, then 30 secs later sent back by his wife to exchange it for one of those furry Monkeys

The wine was later on claimed by Ann A Some current and popular north wales coast stuff got dished out.over the last 30 mins, “Monkey till you drop” meaning anything goes Crowd wise, was good to see numbers up compared to last one, especally as a fair few other events were on as well. A fair few travellers from all stops North West, Yorkshire, St Ives, Kent, Midlands Cambridge, and beyond To me seemed a well good buzz to the nite, all feedback that heard so far was/is highly positive Chameleon Room - The second room format changed (some may note the name ) , this time went for all-era soul format Chico, Mark S and Phil B had volunteered to supply sound kit for this and supply the main sounds, Along with guy who’s name missed apoliges delivered a great mix of sounds Paul Baldwin was the guest dj and caught a fair bit with some quality year 2k+ stuff.

From all heard the format worked really well, with a great mix of all-era stuff, the full range.Awaiting some plays from the djs and will push up all info as know there’s some who are interested. Along with full report of going ons and views from this room. Big thanks to Chico for getting equipment and sorting out.

Already had a lot of good feedback, big thanks to all djs and crowd ……….more soon. Namechecks - Gotta say just too many to mention, Regards to all Thanks - All Djs, as said all feedback on the nite given it a thumbs up, door crew - all things well smooth, members - one of the enjoyable things about the monkey is the support we get, like people just popping in briefly to show support, plus many helping us out in many ways. Promotion - As always doing this show flying on the seat of our arse, most of cash goes on making sure that we deliver the best in quality soul and djs, cause of this main promotion is just word of mouth and flyers. If can spread the word, be it on fanzines, telling muckers, internet email lists, and so on be a help. Future -

Watch out for future event date, djs locations and more soon Endline - Thought attendance may have been dodgy with xmas, events on close by, similar events elsewhere, and all that. Turned out no worries, numbers were up on last one. Own feeling of it was a great nite, of course as co-promoter my view always just that bit different than others. Feel free to post up yours

cheers mike

Well after a great night at the Wilton with a quality dj line up it was time to leave for North Wales and make Monkeys of ourselves (Andy Dyson and Mick H, the two guests for the night and myself. Arrived an hour and fifty minutes later to be greeted by such a wonderful sight, two lasses in fancy dress, one dressed as a genie....f*g 'ell could have rubbed her lamp but as my hands were full with Andy's record boxes any thought of playing Aladdin soon disappeared
Was sorely tempted to put the boxes down and head next door but as we weren't suitably dressed for the occasion had to settle for the Drunken Monkey Soul Club!

All I can say is top night and top crowd. Musically great with the emphasis on quality, non of the usual overplayed hammered to death soul you get at some other venues. We all had a great night and can't recommend this place enough, you really ought to try and get along. Crowd were fully appreciative of all the records played regardless of individuals tastes.

As I said earlier Andy and Mick H were the guests and they didn't disappoint. Both played blinding sets as did all the djs on the night. Our ears were treated to sounds like
Soul Inc, Sensations- Demanding Man, Robert Tanner - Sweet Memories, Vanguards on Shirley (listen out for this great choon), Locations - Mister Diamond Man, Nu-Rons All Of My Life and many more which I'm sure I'll remember when some brain cells have recovered. Maybe Andy can remember what he played and post a playlist

Nice to meet all the other Soul Talkers making monkeys of themselves, I won't name names as I don't want to offend anyone I miss out which I
probably will with my memory.

Left towards the end and headed for Stoke which was a different experience altogether.

Again great night and hope to get back there again pretty soon.

Chalky

Another view

Many thanks to Neil and gang for taking time to pass on their view

Regrettably, despite having read a lot about them, we haven't been able to attend the previous DMSC nights so, when the five of us arrived at 8.45pm we were all officially 'monkey virgins!!'

Having paid our soul tax, we walked into the main room and immediately you could tell the room had atmosphere - WHY HAVEN'T WE GOT VENUES LIKE THIS IN SHROPSHIRE!! we all cried. What a great place!!

Having grabbed some seats we headed for the bar and that was the second pleasant suprise of the night. £6.40 for five drinks!!!

I thought (perhaps in some bizarre tribute to Stafford top-of-the-world) that the beers were being charged at 1980's prices!!

Whilst at the bar, the tunes started to hit me. 'Hang on', I thought. We're still in the first hour of this night and already the big tunes are playing. If the tunes are this good early on, things could only get better
- And I wasn't disappointed!! It was like being new to the scene again.
LOADS of records I've NEVER heard before - Superb. A track by Prince Paul was played twice and this was the highlight of the night for me. WHAT AN AWESOME RECORD and I've never heard it before.

Taking my seat again, my aged fellow soulie Chic said what we were all thinking, 'this is like an allnighter atmosphere', he said. 'It's like the
tunes that used to get played at Droylesden and Hyde Town Hall'. This truly was praise indeed as these two venues rank highly in my list of all
time favourite venues.

Suddenly on comes Teardrops by Soul Bros. Inc. and we're up and dancing
This was to be the third suprise of the night!!

I have, for over 10 years assumed the slippyist dancefloor in the world was at a soul nite we used to go to at a working mens club in Leigh. THE
SPRINFIELD HAS PROVEN ME WRONG!! What have you done to the thing!!?? It was like ice!! I went up to ask the DJ for a record at one point and nearly paid the ultimate price. Surely no-one in the history of Rare Soul has ever fallen on their @rse on a dancefloor whilst simply walking across it
(unless very drunk!!).

Anyway, I soon learned that by dancing on the edge of the carpet I could survive and I will make sure that next time I wear trainers!! I'll have to do something because when you're hearing tunes like Troy Dodds, Arthur Willis and Buddy Smith not dancing is not an option!!

As you can tell, we are now all firmly Monkey converts and we will be regulars at future nights. My only regret is that the Christmas one clashes with the do we run at the White House in Cannock. Anyway, I hope that goes well and we will all be back with you at the Springfield for more quality soul in 2003.

Keep up the (very) good work.

The Second Monkey!!!!! Look back

The Second Monkey!!!!! Look back

Well got there in the end, a bit slower starting this time, but come midnight it was case of Monkey a go go, with the main room full and kicking. As always great sets from regs Andy Rix and Rob Thomas, guests Guy H, Ally M and Phil B did the hardest to give us overload of quality soul
Second Room got off to a cracking first one, thanks to the efforts of the 4 guest second room djs
And as always big thanks to all members who helped, supported, turned up and made the nite.

A well lengthy view on nite is available....
...hit that read more to read more Anyway finally me and Sue got up to hotel. Into the non stop sorting. Plain sailing - yeah sure. Shape of things to come, seems hotel had a fair few changes of staff, so everything that had sorted out in the last one was unsorted, and they weren't eager to go back, plus as new not clued up on what we were about, ho hum ,second room needed fair bit of work, as manager had set it up so could use it for a christening the next day, so didn't really have the look for a sweaty den of hardcore 6ts soul, move tables, more sweat, move tables, then found eldest had borrowed the mixer but forgot to put it back in box, frantic phonecalling and favours finally sorted it. Speaker cable no good. Partner in crime Steve was late, more sweat.. People starting arriving, more sweat, curtains needed sorting as daylight, they had to be in crap order, playlists, lights, yeah think that's it, chance to taste hour old pint. On wind up session well cause of the messing around with me and Steve all over the place - the "monkey wind up" was being done by someone else, no offence to anyone and all that but one choice had even Sue looking amazed. As had strongly pushed the get in early and jump straight in quality on newsletter, was just looking at ceiling at this stage.Quick walk around, nearly slipped over on the dance floor, this was start of the icerink saga. But in between had the not enough bar staff scenario, eventually solved when manager came in.

Last time, though made sure floor was polished first, had a few saying weren't that good, don't know what the hotel had done, but this time it was a skating rink, this was a major problem early on, as was well dodgy, needed the ideal solution, orange juice was one given, sand another suggested, Steve showing his chef expertise threw salt all over the place, nah, even a suggestion of get levine in and then no one will want to use it, by now people had marked their spot threw something down and then refused to budge. Final solution was mop and hot water, which seemed to work a bit.Though if anyone has a proven soloution let us know . OK now about 9 30, and apart from those who thought a promoter meant general handyman, things were on the way up.

Best blagger of the nite award went to the guy who told Sue , " allright I'm Rob Thomas dj-ing" and thus got in free and led to a later "no that's not Rob Thomas " conversation
Most adaptable punter - had a local woman, heard it was a soul nite, assumed to be motown nite, turned up, asked nicely why no temptations, once told checked out second room and now part of the malcolm woosley R&B fan club
Most content person -Small Paul who as hasn't even got a computer isn't doing that bad for online mentions, says cheers to john p
Most unusal punter 1- Carl W who turned down bookings for this nite so could attend event
Most unusal punter 2 - The first ever person at the two events to ask for oldies

Anyway got this far and not a mention of any of real action, well Phil Blacknell did the first guest spot at 840 opening in fine style after the monkey wind up (think this one was wrong word wind up:), followed by Ally Mayer who started off with a early soul acetate recently picked up from new york, the real Rob Thomas was on next , a cracking set, Guy H the main guest was up at 11 - Andy Rix doing the 12 -1 with yet another top of the range set
Phil B finished the nite off with the monkey till you drop spot - which as a bit of a throwback to the chaos early on, also had the new manager first trying to close it at 1.am, then 1.15, and then finally throwing the lights on in a strop about 1.30 with Phil B failing in the attempt to slip just one more on
Off course got all plays logged in head and all the running bout early on didnt affect me, will add soonest

Not just the main room this time, but also the second room was on the go, dj duties split between,
malcolm worsley -
tim fletcher -
carl lloyd-
johnny jones -

all selected to give a fair old balance of non-main room stuff - fresh revivals, little heards, R&B, early soul etc

Students of second room scientology ( was it john p who put up article on it)
may be interested to know our thoughts on it and how it went
Had to give this a lot of thought as looked at modern option and to tell truth dismissed it as to us seemed just to be a "get more thru the door" and as never see that much interaction between rooms, espically modern to main room. Thought wouldn't add anything to event for the mainly 6ts fan which event is about

So decided 60s - then what r&b? name is to some a put off for some reason, and as nearly everyone has their own idea of what R&B is, sacked it
Oldies room ? - Nah defintely not, think thoughts on this was, not what event is about
Collectors Room - Could work, but name would put some off
End Choice - Other Side Of Street - Bit of a mix - said non main hall stuff inc all sorts 60s soul, bit hard to categorize espically the non-main hall term , but thinking being that if have varied styles djs should result in a worthwhile addition to the soul; fans nite, as thats what they come for

End Result - Bit slow to kick off but when it did, yep it worked very well, fairly packed thru out nite, someone said more in than the modern room at lowtown which was funny in a nice way, few ups and downs in numbers.as nite went on But overall 100% success and know all djs got big thumbs up from members. Was a bit of concern with numbers as could always drag people from the main hall, but never a problem, with both busy did close it at 1215. as main effort always gonna be the last 1hr 15.
Plus with room whole event moved up a notch as the other bar was now more availble and the venue had more depth rather than just the one main room.

Well thats the rooms/djs covered ought else... yeah of course most important one the crowd, bit slower filling up than last time, but later on was close to the same as the first one. We were thinking after the first for numbers to improve a bit but pre-event feedback gave better idea, a lot said it was because of clashes, though almost impossible to avoid them this time, and to me makes sense to clash with a commerical oldies nighter than any proper northern event, would like to avoid Bretby but if we did for example then be clashing with Keele for next one, do know a few moved on afterwards to either Bretby or togetherness.

Crowdwise well words getting around a lot of travellers from all over the place down south, midlands and so on and a fair few doing their second visit, crowd yet again made the nite, bit subdued earlier on but made up for it later. Always lots of good comments on the feel and the attitude of the crowd, friendly, up for it being just some of the descriptions.

Photos - well watch out a roving digital camera was busy on the nite, so expect a few laughs, portraits, and all the rest on site

Anyway think thats the end of this lengthy piece, overall after a shakey start, a few problems, and the nite picked up to a well enjoyable one, some well ouch sounds were being dished out by the regulars with the guests doing the buisness as well. The second room format seems to be a winner.Have another all star line up for next one
Think most of the hiccups were ironed out after the first hour or so. Apoligies if any of them had a bad effect on your nite, think most were due to the having new staff,

The manager apoligies for the floor, again it was his first northern one, and think said floor was ideal for ballroom.
He said that will repeat the drinks promotion at the next one in recognition of the problems

Big thanks as always from all the Monkey Team to all members who supported the event, and all those who have helped with event, spread the word and flyers and as we say without you there be no monkey

Next one is 28 Sep

Note: All DMSC members feel free to pass on your views of last nites event, enjoyed it? suggestions? points? and so on
We thrive on feedback!! Just hit that comments

Memories of the 1962 Motown Revue

According to Joe Billingslea of the Contours, "some inhospitable Southerners fired rifles at the Motor Town Special tour buses, many of the hotels on that famous 1962 Motown trek were dumps, the buses was hot and rickety, but overall it was a fabulous tour.
In 1962, a Detroit photographer came along for the ride, and Curtis E. Woodson’s new book about the trip is being launched this week.
“Memories of The 1962 Motown Revue — A Photographic Journal” captures scenes from Motown founder Berry Gordy, Jr.s road show, that featured Marv Johnson, Mary Wells, the Marvelettes, the Miracles, Marvin Gaye, Martha Reeves & the Vandellas, the Contours, the Supremes, Singin Sammy Ward and the Choker Campbell Orchestra.
Woodson was the shows official photographer but for more than 40 years, the 100 odd photographs, shot during performances in Washington, D.C., Boston and Birmingham, Ala., have never been published or seen by the public.

Godfather of Soul Does Jazz

Tomorrow, July 20, Verve Records will issue for the first time on CD James Brown's 35-year-old jazz album, "Soul on Top." Recorded in 1969 with the Louie Bellson Orchestra and originally released on King Records, the 12-tune collection features Oliver Nelson's arrangements and Brown's bandmate Maceo Parker Jr.'s tenor sax. Led by longtime Duke Ellington Orchestra drummer Bellson, the support group includes such noteworthies as bassist Ray Brown and alto saxophonist Ernie Watts. In the LP's original liner notes, penned by jazz scribe Leonard Feather, Brown commented, "At heart I've always been a jazz man. When I was just a kid in Macon, Ga., during amateur shows, I went up onstage with some of those name bands that passed through town. I've never forgotten the impression those big-band sounds made on me." Brown's performance on the album includes vocal improvisations teeming with his trademark squeals, "uh-huhs" and "good Gods." Among the tracks are such low-lights romantic standards as "That's My Desire" and "It's Magic." Brown puts a jazz spin on Hank Williams' "Your Cheating Heart" and stretches out on two of his big hits, "It's a Man's, Man's, Man's World" and "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag," given the big-band jazz treatment by Nelson. The CD also contains a previously unissued version of Brown's 1968 hit, "There Was a Time," co-written by Brown and Bud Hobgood. (Web ref: Reuters/Billboard)

Llandudno Niter - review 18 July - on a upper

Llandudno Niter Like the boy who lives next to the school always being late, this event was on 500m from where live and still didn’t manage to get their till 230am, as got attacked my sleep fiend.

In past always a bit wary about writing views on local events, as may see it from a different perspective. But nowadays its a case of just do own thing so here you go. Llandudno being my home town am always keen to see such events do well, promoters off this event do things their own way, and at times has to be said in past dont always agree with way do some things. However that’s just my own personal punter view and not important in whole scheme of things. Not sure how many years its been running regular 7? so their methods work. However looking at the line up booked for this one have to say that this line up core looks like was strongest around the uk this weekend mark bicknell carl willingham kev murphy carole roger banks little scotty ricey gary beattie

Walked into Mark Bicknell set , who was letting out a strong set of top rarities, Jimmy Burns, Ivories had missed Roger Banks and earlier sets Carl Willingham was up next and carried on his superb form he is in at moment with yet another great set. Highlights being yet again Teardrops Soul (bros?) inc and his latest newie/biggie - Survivours - Baby, heard this first time at New Century other week and have to say its a good one. As more than likely know Carl is retiring from dj-ing with finishing his dj-days at Prestatyn 2005, have to say he is going out on top form, and as said before one his strengths in the range of styles he can push out as the venues/crowd demands. Is there such a thing as 5d as got so many dimensions (groan:) Top stuff and he is sure going to be missed come next year. Kev Murphy double decking with Andy McCabe on next - Sonattas - Going on down the road kicking things off with a set that included a bit of a motown session. 7 O Clock and time for Little Scotty to finish nite, fresh from New century event at Wolverhampton he finished the night as he only does.

Heard numbers where up on last one and while healthy as with a fair few events nowadays it could have done with few more just to lift the buzz and feel of nite. Though i certainly enjoyed it. Fair few travelers and few muckers turned up unannounced, London, Cambridge, Stoke, Midland, North West, and so on well represented. Fair few locals there but not as many as last time. Myself though got there late found it most enjoyable, was good to see event on the up and a strong dj line up is always a winner for me. As said Dave P and Garry B do things their own way, they certainly put effort and organization into this event, hopefully the next one in October the first Saturday will continue the upward trend and if main part of dj line up is as strong am sure this event be back on the map with a bang.

8am saw us spilling out to what has to be the best uplifting view from a niter anywhere, Llandudno bay, glorious welsh sunshine as well, unfortunately the alldayers after are no longer at moment so that was that.

Next one OCT 2ND Line up as it occurs

Hideaway Club Manchester Lookback 30 Oct 04

Car still dead thanks to the usual yorkshire curse coming into play at lifeline last week, so this weekend was looking grim till was saved by a phone call from Steve offering a lift to the Hideaway up in Manchester.
Never been before so yeah why not. Full car set off, dodgy internet maps and fact Picadilly station has 6 fronts led to a bit of a walk from carpark but got there in end. Nites are upstairs in a smart pub and soon as walked in could tell were in for a good nght by feel of place. Place well busy. Good to see Pete Coulson straight away who havent seen for a long time and also bumped into Miss Popcorn who knew but not by her online alais. The Very Best in Club Sixties Club Sounds and New Breed RnB is how it was billed on a old flyer and thats what got with emphasis on the RnB. Have read/heard a right old bag of spanners about RnB in past, as seems with a lot of soul related subjects/terms, just cause some people havent a clue what some terms mean it doesnt stop them making their own defintion up and shouting it. Have heard all sorts refereed to as RnB on travels, espically amongst oldies freaks, if dont know it or not catchy uptempo -it must be RnB, and then usually follows a triade of nonsense quotes that just dont make sense.
Well next time someone wants to try give me earache like that I will grab their left ear and drag em straight to next Hideaway, so can actually hear what is a night with a "strong" RnB flavour. Anyway forget the rant, Yep it was a very good nite, when you get djs who know how to dish RnB/soul the right way its as good as it gets, eveything worked and matched well, even version of "enjoy yourself" fitted in with nite. Crowd wise, as said great feel, could tell that was crowd well into enjoying their music and that "into the music" feel gave nite a great buzz.
Vinyl wise a lot on offer and lot of stuff that dont usually see , again ... there was that "into the music" feel. Djs line up, apoligies if missed anyone (think I have) think all 3 residents were on, with guest DJ being Hoss with Neil Henderson, Mike Warburton, Paul Welsby , think was a case of 2 sets each, with a special Dave Godin Tribute 3 at end.
Scrounged a couple of 5 interesting plays from Hoss and Paul
Hoss 5 Interesting Plays:
Cora Woods - Flying Home to you baby
Oliver Joy - Keep Love Growing
Jimmy Ricks - Take a Trip
Connectors - Whole Lotta Woman
K D Emerson - Every Woman I know (being a Hoss "top cheapie get it whileyou can type tip"
Says all went down well with floor
Paul W 5 Interesting Plays
Joe Baatan - Special Girl - Fania - (see later note)
The Drifters - If you Dont Come Back - Atlantic
Sam Cook - Thats It I Quit Im Moving On -UK RCA
Donnie Elbert -Wild Child - Deluxe
Ronnie Hawkings - southern Love - Roulette
Lots of other highlights thru nite, four winds, both gladys ts, to name three and have to say it was one of them nites where head was full of must remember that one and then, need that name embeded, what was other one called again
Two records knocked me out and both could be said completely different one a latin flavoured great 60s fest and other a 50s top 20 rnb hit first up - one been banging meself out and was first time have heard it out elsewhere (even though been told its an old mod fav) sounded great and had great reaction
Second up was the second last record was being played (this one) sounded great for first minute and a half but then out of nowhere this break come in, which thanks to the sound system sounded awesome ...
play this even louder
two not rare, not typical, not traditional, but who cares, i certainly enjoyed them and that was that, was a great nite, music wise most refreshing, as said whole nite had a "into the music" feel , and any nite which has me overloaded with "must remembers" is a good one in my book
Thanks to all involved for a great nite, And thanks of course to s+l for lift

Thornton Sisters - The Ditchdiggers Daughters

As often happens was doing a bit of searching, stumbled across some interesting information, it made a nice change to hear a uplifting story for a change, as sometimes when looking up artists information the stories behind the 45s can be a bit down.
Thornton Sisters - The Ditchdiggers Daughters
Was just looking thru ebay completed bids" the other day and noticed the Thornton Sisters 45 "I Keep Forgetting/Ooh-Poo-Pah-Doo" on the Cuppy label up there.

Always been a fan of their "rough and ready" "Big City Boy" 45 outing on Bobsan, As you more than likely know, usually a bit of a dig may just throw up one or two small bits of info, if lucky! But this time, this "dig" was quite suprising, due to the amount of information that come up on the screen, regarding the Thornton Sisters. It seems that they are quite famous, not really so much for their musical achievements but for the fact they turned their back on the "bright lights" and all that, to concentrate on "proper" jobs and lifestyles.

All down to their father who guided them to make sure their lifes were worthwhile. As this story of a father and his 6 daughters is covered by a book " The Ditch Diggers Daughters" a tv movie/series and even was featured on a Oprah show, thought rather than letting you suffer my words, will put up below a series of clips, links and photos which will tell the story that much better. Suggest follow the links as they lead to more info, and also try the search engines as more articles will show up. A clip from (note link no longer valid)

The Ditchdiggers Daughter is an inspiring portrait by a loving daughter of a father whose pervasive common sense, folk wisdom, and untutored but right-on insights gave his children their road map to a better life. It is the story of a man who dared to dream that his black daughters would someday become doctors–and who guided them to achieve the seemingly impossible goals he set for them. It is also the story of an astute businessman who formed his bright and talented girls into a rhythm-and-blues band that played Harlems Apollo theatre and won a recording contract, which Donald tore up when he discovered it required his girls to leave school. Instead, the Thornton sisters played colleges on weekends, earning enough money to pay for their education, yet not allowing their music to interfere with their studies.
A article from the Temple Times 1997
http://www.temple.ed...
They took honors five times at the Apollo Theater in Harlem and appeared on Ted Macks Amateur Hour. Offered a record contract, the daughters considered abandoning college for music careers. Again, their father steered them in the right direction. "Music is fine for now," he told them, "but nobody wants a 40-year-old musician. "Now a 40-year-old doctor, thats something else."

Ok that sets the scene follow the links and can read the full story, maybe sounds a bit "afternoon television" but I found it interesting and good to read positive, smile on your face stories about the artists who gave us this great music. Hopefully of interest all above was news to me, though the "Ditchdiggers Daughters" did ring a bell but never connected it to the Thornton Sisters.

Magnificent Montague - Burn Burn Burn - A new book

When rioters in Watts, California, began shouting "Burn, Baby! BURN!" in the turmoil of 1965, they were echoing the most popular cry on rhythm-and-blues radio: The trademark of Magnificent Montague, the most exciting R&B disc jockey ever to stroll through Soulsville.
In Los Angeles on KGFJ, and earlier in New York on WWRL, Montague yelled "Burn!" whenever he was playing a record that moved him. His listeners followed suit, calling Montague and shouting "Burn!" on the air. The emotion in that exchange reverberated with as much excitement as the music of Stevie Wonder, Sam Cooke and Otis Redding.
Now, in his autobiography, to be published in October, 2003, by University of Illinois Press, Montague tells the story of his days on the mike and his simultaneous, hidden life as one of the most passionate collectors of African American memorabilia in the U.S. The intertwining of Montagues dual lives makes "Burn, Baby! Burn!" one of the most historically informative books on entertainment and the most entertaining history book around
As it says a new book out this month, check out the site for clips of the book, sound clips and more

Northern Soul Sydney Australia

"THE OPENING NIGHT" SOUL BISCUITS NORTHERN SOUL CLUB SYDNEY, NSW, AUSTRALIA - 28th JANUARY 2004 I am lugging behind me a box of 100 precious vinyl 45's as I climb the stairs leading to the entrance of Bar Cleveland, the venue for the big opening night of the Soul Biscuits Northern Soul Club in Sydney, NSW, Australia. As the owner and moderator of the Australian Yahoo Group "Northernsoulinoz" and having around 2000 Northern Soul 45's I have been asked to play a couple of sets to help the night along by the event's organiser "Keith "Keefster" Miller. It's 7.30pm and once inside I finally get to meet "Keefster" and his fiancÃÆ’©e Amy, I didnt recognise Keith at first as he has shaven off his beard. There is a little tension in the air, Keefster has been planning this night since he first came to Australia from Scotland several months ago, some said it couldn't be done and now it's the time of reckoning. We are the only three people in the place and are very nervous, is anybody going to turn up? Has all the effort been worth it? Will they like what we have to offer? Oh shit!, this is the moment of truth, this is it!! I look around at the empty venue, it is a great looking place, good sized wooden dance floor, basically three rooms with the bar being the centre of the middle room, with the DJ booth positioned right behind the bar. The place reminded me a little of The Duke of York in Adelaide but with an extra room on the side. I check out the DJ gear, 2 Technics SL1200MK2 turn tables and a three channel Pioneer mixer with one touch cueing. All good so far. We put on the first record to try the sound, its Martha and the Vandellas "No where to run", the haunting lyrics of Martha Reeves echo around the empty rooms, sounds brilliant, 6 large speakers across the three rooms, two not working, find switches on wall, what a fantastic sound, all we need now are people and preferably soul lovers, but right now we'll take anyone! Its 8.00pm the advertised starting time and still only the three of us in the cavernous club, starting to feel lonely and apprehensive, we all look each other in the eye, and without saying anything we all know things are not going the way they were planned. Keefster cranks up the decks and starts to play some tracks, what else can you do? Dave Cutler comes in, four of us now; we talk about old times and old places and hope a few more are on the way to join us. Several people wander in from the stairs and buy drinks, then a few more, followed by Alex White one of the Sydney Soul Sisters, we have a beer at the bar, discuss how its not looking too good, Alex assures us there is a crowd of Sydney Soul regulars on the way and theyd better be here by 9.00pm or shell kill them, somehow I believe her. It's now 8.30pm and things still very quiet, about 10 people and in a place this size thats empty. Keefster is still plugging away on the decks, what else can you do? A few more wander in and then just after 9.00 a good sized contingency of Sydney soul regulars arrive as Alex had promised, well not too bad at least the night wont be a total disaster. Dave Mac and his wife then arrive and at around 9.10 Dave is on the decks spinning some modern. A few more soulies come up the stairs and things are not looking too bad with around 35 in the place. 9.30 pm around 45 in now and a few of the local scooter boys arrive looking the part in their Parkas, we are glad to see them and three of four people are dancing to Daves modern now, the place is filling up nicely with about 50 in, we start to breath a sigh of relief, this could be a reasonable night after all. 9.45 and people pouring up the stairs, where are they coming from? Who cares? Its looking good. Dave has warmed the crowd nicely, about 60 in now and a good friendly atmosphere building, the crack is good and the Sydney Soul scene far better than I expected. More people streaming up the stairs about 80 in now and its time for my first set. I am nervous for a different reason now, not because no-one is in the place, but will they like what I am going to play? I had my set all carefully planned and prepared, now at the last minute I have doubts about it and I am changing my mind, I tell myself too late, your on now son, go to it. It's 10.00pm and time for my first track, its Martha&the Vandellas "No where to run" for the second time of the night, this time with around 85 people listening to it, I am relieved, it goes down well about 10 on the dance floor, well that's OK for a start. Next I play Buddy Sigler "Follow your heart", the big trumpeting intro calls a few more to the dance floor and the place is starting to swing. I stick to a good thing, and follow up with "Run for Cover" - The Dells, "Determination" - Dean Parish and then as the into of JJ Barnes "Please Let me in" swirls around the room the dance floor becomes alive with about 25 on there. We are all feeling good now, Keefster comes into the DJ Booth with the biggest grin I have seen all night, we eagerly shake hands, a fantastic job all-round, the night is better than we could have expected. The crowd are appreciative off the music, I am more relaxed and at last beginning to enjoy the night. I follow up with some of my favourites: "This old heart of mine" - Isley Brothers, "Right Track" - Billy Butler, which is supported by the sharp crack of many hand claps from the dancers, the floor is packed, people have continued to drift in, the place is rammed with about 110 in now, and a few of the Sydneysiders are livening the place up with back drops, spins and other dance floor gymnastics (see photos). Its easy and enjoyable from here on in, just keep the dance floor packed with Northern Soul classics such as "Girl across the street" - Moses Smith, "Let her go" - Otis smith, "Angel Baby" - Daryl Banks, then its Brice Coefields "Aint that right". I follow these with Ace Spectrums "Dont send nobody else", plenty of hand clapping to this one and the crowd are having a great time, even the bar staff are swinging along to it, what an atmosphere, this place is brilliant! Every so often locals enter the DJ booth, they are keen to show their appreciation and also ask for requests, I tell myself this is what Northern Soul is all about. The sounds keep coming and as the intro to "A little togetherness" from the Young Hearts booms around the room, the dance floor is heaving, my two last tracks of this set have come all to soon, slowing things down a little now, but the floor still rocking and clapping to Bobby Paris - "I walked away" and then Timi Yuro - "Itll never be over for me". The place is alive, the dance floor packed, George Coumbis, aka "Agent OO Soul, who is known to have one of the best record collections in Australia enters the DJ booth as he has the 11.00 - 12.00 spot, a soulful handshake and George is at the decks, a brilliant start with "You shoulda held on" from the 7th Avenue Aviators and then "Strange Change" - Herb Ward and "I can't help myself" - The Volumes, the dance floor is alive, the bar sales are brisk and the Sydney Soul Biscuits Northern Soul Club is in full swing. Plenty more great tracks follow from George, he keeps the dance floor busy for his whole set and finishes with "We're acting like lovers" - The Spellbinders and then "Call on me" from the Dynells, great set George, the crowd loved it, Agent OO Soul hands over the decks to Keefster, its another soulful handshake and smiles all around, the Sydney soul scene has been kind to us, they have turned up to support the opening night of Soul Biscuits in droves, all credit to them, a great bunch of people are the Sydneysiders and how they love their Northern Soul. Its Keefster on the decks now, the whole Soul Biscuits Club was his idea and as the clock ticks midnight he has the place jumping and is in fine form. He starts with some old favourites, Jay&the Techniques - "Make your own sweet music", "Working on a building of love" - Chairmen of the Board and then Patty and the Emblems - "Mixed up shook up little girl". Its Johnny Johnson and the Bandwagon - "Breaking down the walls", then the Temptations with "Aint too proud to beg", and then perhaps the bravest play of the night and one of the most successful with Keefster playing "Under my thumb" - Wayne Gibson, the crowd love it and even sing along, the dance floor stays packed all through Keefster's set, no Happy Lappy now, just pure vinyl magic, what a night for Northern Soul. After Keiths amazing set the Bar Manager pulls him aside, and says great job, good crowd, big bar takings, come and see me next week Keith, we need to talk about a regular gig. I am then back on the decks for the last set 1.00 - 2.00pm, again plenty of dance floor action and a good number stay till the very end, including Sydney Soul Sister Alex White who helps with some words of encouragement and advice regarding the next gig. The die hards didnt want to go home and wanted more at 2.00am the official closing time. I am able to squeeze in 4 more before being asked politely by security to call it a night, and what a night, it was suddenly all over, the feeling was one of relief combined with great happiness, the night had worked, the venue was good, the music was brilliant, the sound system and equipment made it all sound great and best of all the Sydney crowd had turned up in style to support the opening night. On behalf of Keefster and myself, we THANK YOU SYDNEY, 120 people came on a mid-week night, you are a great bunch of soulies, thank you for making us welcome, it is very much appreciated and yes, we WILL be back. THANK YOU SYDNEY and thank you KEEFSTER you made it happen. Regards Steve Bardsley PS The next Soul Biscuits Northern Soul Night has been confirmed for the 25th February 2004, same place, same DJ's.

Twilight time - joe w

a great piece by joe w
some of the younger folk might know the platters only from their reincarnation as a soul act in the mid-60s, "with this ring" and "washed ashore" and all that, but the platters were, twilight time of course, a monster group in the 50s--remember "the great pretender"?
they had four number one songs and 16 gold records in five years. tony williams, the lead singer until 1960, had a magical and powerful voice rivaled in the 50s only by roy orbisons and even in the early 60s when i became a teenager, the platters ballads were still huge--"smoke gets in your eyes" followed by "harbor lights" was all you needed to get a girl wet. so when my good buddy john miller, who owns a record store called the record museum, phoned me up one evening in, oh, about 1986 or so, i cant remember exactly when, and told me the platters were playing that night at the holiday inn on the beach--the real platters, the tony williams platters--i dropped everything (what, a tuna fish sandwich and a bottle of beer) and got in his van and headed out to collins avenue and 87th street on miami beach. on the way, we listened to platters tapes--"heaven on earth, "my prayer"--and sped across the causeway, worried the whole time wed be late, locked out, and shit out of luck. when we got there, we could hear the platters already singing, the band finishing up "i love you 1000 times." we jogged, didnt want to miss a note of tony williams. when we got there we saw . . .
jesus h, when we got there we saw a small diningroom with the lights fully on, a tiny venue more suited to a stand-up comedian than a singing group. up on stage to the left, by himself, stood tony williams suited up in a tux, looking lonely; the group--i think most of them were his family--stood way to the right of the stage. the place was empty, absofuckinglutely empty. empty, that is, except for one table around which a dozen or so cubans were celebrating somebodys birthday. while the platters sang, they cackled and cockledoodled, a bunch of cocolocos who couldnt care less about this old negrito struggling up on stage. and tony was struggling. the band launched into "twilight time" and his voice, the one that used to swing from chandeliers and leap over tall buildings, cracked and creaked at every high note. he sounded like he was strangling in his own vomit. at the finale of the song his voice choked and simply crapped out on him. from the back of the clubroom,
where john and i stood, you could see the frustration and embarrassment in his face, his lips pursed in self-disgust. he coughed into his fist and lamely said, "oh man, must a been somethin i ate. man, the food at this place, ha ha ha." he was swaying on his feet, he was drunk. he tried one more tune and quit half way through, waving a weak hand at the group. then one of the group--i think he introduced himself as tonys son--took over the lead while tony snapped his fingers in time to the music and rocked on his heels, his head down.
i wondered what it must be like to have been tony williams--the great tony williams, "the magic touch," "one in a million," "only you"--to have been a glorious star only to find yourself one evening late in your career standing on stage looking out at a tiny clubroom with garish lights that contained only a table full of cucarachas with their backs turned to you, treating you like the shoeshine boy, and two shadows in the back of the room who soon slid back into the night, out of respect for your memory, having seen the saddest thing they had ever seen.

Barbara Lynn Story

The Barbara Lynn Story
Written by Dave Rimmer the DJ and editor of Soulful Kinda Music, where article such as this are the norm (see fanzine section for ordering info)

For somebody born in Texas (Beaumont, January 16 1942) Barbara Lynn Ozen's recording career was very cosmopolitan. Her first recordings were done in New Orleans for a Philadelphia based label, then for a New Orleans label, then for a New York label in Mississippi and Alabama. And that was just the Sixties!
So let's go back to the early days in Beaumont, Texas. Unlike many singers, Barbara Lynn didn't get her start through the church. It was the Texas Blues singers, and Elvis Presley who inspired her. She started learning piano at school, but soon tired of the instrument, so her mother bought her a ukulele. Once she had proved that she could play it, despite being left handed, a proper guitar was purchased for Barbara.
Throughout her teens, Barbara wrote poetry prolifically, it was when she started to put the words to music that she began to perform.
By 1960 she was in New Orleans, singing backing tracks at Goldband Records and performing in local clubs with her band, Bobbie Lynn and The Idols. The group performed cover versions of current pop (Rock & Roll) hits, R & B covers, and at least one of Barbara's poems that she had composed some music for, 'You'll Lose A Good Thing'.
There are several stones about how Barbara was discovered, but the one that appears most frequently, and is supported by Barbara herself, was that she was performing at a club called Lou Arm's in New Orleans when well known producer Huey P Meaux was told to catch the show and give her a listen.
He duly went, saw her perform 'You'll Lose A Good Thing' and decided he wanted to record her. Huey was at this time a regular producer at Cosimo Matassa's recording studio at 521 Governer Nichols Street in New Orleans. He regularly took artists like Joe Barry, Leroy Martin, Rod Bernard and Jimmy Adams into the studio to record. So this is where he took Barbara to record her debut track. It could of course have been the fact that Cosimo let Huey use the facilities on credit rather than money up front which influenced his choice! Either way, within a few days the song was recorded, and several acetates were distributed to radio stations.
Almost immediately Jamie Records in Philadelphia showed interest and promptly signed Barbara to a three-year contract. The song was released as Jamie 1220 with 'Lonely Heartaches' as the flip. It proved to be a huge hit single reaching # 1 on the R & B chart and #8 on the Billboard Pop charts.
Nobody could have anticipated such a huge national hit with a debut single, and there wasn't a follow up single ready. However, on the strength of the hit Barbara went on tour. She eventually covered 43 states and appeared on Dick Clarke's Bandstand TV programme (Which was recorded in Philadelphia) twice.
By the end of the year another two singles had been released and an album recorded. The album included the tracks 'Dina And Patrina', (Although I've seen it listed as 'Dina And Petriria', and even 'Dina And Katriria') and 'Give Me A Break'. The reason I mention this is that the two tracks appear to have been released as a single on Eric, prior to the Jamie deal. Although I've never seen the single Barbara herself does give credence to its existence in an interview with Alan Govenar in 'Meeting The Blues: The Rise Of Texas Music’. Barbara was back in the charts in January 1963 with her third single for Jamie, 'You're Gonna Need Me I I'm Sorry I Met You' Jamie 1240. According to the Billboard chart this was Barbara's only hit that year. However, the Cashbox charts show hits with 'Don't Be Cruel / You Can't Be Satisfied' Jamie 1244, and 'I Cried At Laura's Wedding / You Better Stop' Jamie 1260.
By 1964, Billboard had stopped producing an R & B chart, merging Black artists in with the Hot 100 Pop songs. This caused many problems in terms of recognition for black artists for two reasons: 1964 was the year the Beatles hit the States big time, along with all the other UK groups. So many great singles would have sold many thousands of copies, but never got a chart entry.
Barbara hit the Hot 100 twice in 1964 with 'Oh! Baby (We Got A Good Thing Going / Unfair' Jamie 1286 and 'Let Her Knock Herself Out / Don't Spread It Around' Jamie 1292. This single was significant because it was not recorded in New Orleans. It was actually recorded in Houston at the ACA Studios owned by Bill Holford-
In 1965 Barbara recorded another album. It was not issued until 1997 when Bear family put out the 'Promises' CD. Whilst the tracks were all studio recordings an audience was dubbed over the top to give a, disappointing, live sound
Four singles were also released in 1965, none of them became big hits for Barbara and her contract with Janue was not renewed-
Huey Meaux still had confidence in her though, so 1966 saw her first release on Huey's own Tribe label. The first release 'I'm A Good Woman / Running Back' Tribe 8316 failed to chart, but the second, the original version of 'You Left The Water Running' Tribe 8319 reached #43 on the R & B charts in October 1966. Two further singles on the label in 1967 failed to chart but Huey Meaux had, as her manager, managed to get a contract with Atlantic Records.
The first tracks for the label were recorded at the Grits and Gravy studio in Clinton Mississippi in September 1967. They weren't released until February 1968 and took Barbara back into the charts. 'This Is The Thanks I Got/Ring Telephone Ring' Atlantic 2450 reached #39 on the Billboard R+B charts. And 65 in the pop charts. It was to prove Barbara's last pop hit.
The recording career becomes slightly confusing now. Certainly several tracks were recorded in 1968 (including four at the fame studios in Muscle Shoals and three singles (Atlantic 2513, 2553, and 2585) were released, but none of them charted. There was also a superb album 'Here Is Barbara Lynn' Atlantic 8171. There is then a 3-year gap when it appears that Barbara did no recording at all for the label. I can find no explanation for this, and neither Jerry Wexler in his book, or Charlie Gillett in his history of Atlantic Records makes any mention of Barbara Lynn at all.
Atlantic certainly had tracks in the can though because in 1971 'Until Then I'll Suffer/ Take Your Love And Run' Atlantic 2812 was released. It proved to be a big hit on the R & B chart (Although it didn't reach the Pop chart). It was Barbara's best showing on the charts for Atlantic so a further three singles were released over the next two years. One, 'I'm A One Man Woman / Nice And Easy' Atlantic 2853 was another '68 recording, with the last two being '72 and '73 recordings respectively.
Her ties with the label were finally severed in late 1973 and she set about touring the Southern States on a regular basis. A one off single on the Copyright label was recorded in 1974, followed by another on Starflite in 1975.
A longer contract was signed with Jetstream Records in 1976. The first of two singles being a re-recording of 'Until Then I'll Suffer' Jetstream 804. The second was 'Movin' On A Groove' Jetstream, 829 which is currently enjoying popularity on the rare Soul scene. Neither single charted, and they proved to be Barbara’s last recordings for three years
1979 saw another one off single for Love Records 'Mellow Feeling Parts 1 & 2' Love 111, followed by a break until 1983 when 'I'm still the same" was released on Jamstone Records.
The touring had continued though out the years and 1984 saw Barbara tour Japan for the first time. A live album was released in Japan. Unfortunate I’ve been unable to trace any details of the label or the track listing.
1988 saw the release in Holland of the Good Times Album, which contained ten Jamie tracks, two tribe, three Atlantic and one side of the copyright single. This year also saw a new contract and the release of the superb single " Trying To Love Two/Sugar Ciated Love" Ichiban 88-142 and the album entitled "You Don’t Have To go"
There was then a 6-year gap in releases (Although I suspect that there were a couple of Blues tracks done on the Antones label during this period on compilation albums. Until 1994 when Bullseye Blues released a new album recorded with a full backing band containing such notables as The Memphis Horns and David T Walker.
The last new recordings by Barbara were released in 1996 by ITP as an album on which Barbara recorded (Again) many of her own hits and covered songs by artists like The Marvelettes and Betty Wright.
Several retrospective CDs have been released in the 90s most notably by Ichoban (covering the Atlantic tracks) and by Jamie themselves and the Bear family release of last year.
So that brings the story up to date and I can only add that the consistency or all her recordings, real Soul tinged with Texas Blues, makes Barbara Lynn a real star of Soul music who never really got any recognition outside of specialist circles after her big hit in1962.
Apparently she is now living in Los Angeles, a grandmother, content with life and no regrets over her career.
As always in doing articles like this, without direct access to the artist the material is sourced from a variety of places. This time I like to give credit to a following people:
David Nathan for his sleeve notes on the Ichiban CD
Jeff Hanunusch for his sleeve notes on "Promises" CD.
David Cole for the article in issue 4 of "In The Basement."

I am told that it came via Mr Anderson, passing the rather large 4 figures sum heading into his bank account in payment on the way, thus making 3 copies of said tune.

Re: eric lomax girl your so good -c/u
By the way that makes copy No 5 - Butch, Mick S&Mick H, Dave Welding and Steve Gaunori both have it as well. Sadly us mere mortals will have to be content with trying to mug them for it or praying to the God that is Mr Anderson that he may be able to secure the rights to it for a Grapevine release.

Re: eric lomax girl your so good -c/u
can not see it coming out on grapevine for a number of years yet.
as all known djs with it have it coverd up.very top secret wouid you say.from what ive heard they have all payed four figure sums for it dont think they wouid be happy chappys if john anderson released it on grapevine.so i think this is going to remain mystery for a number of years.also john manship has put a £££ large bounty on it for any infomation leading to its known identity.couid it be another little ann?

I think we can say that Grapevine wont be releasing, if at all, for many years sadly. Is it an unissued acetate? Who knows, but I did hear rumour some time ago that Mr Anderson was trying to secure the rights to an unissued UK LP by someone well known that fell through so it may be that if it is unreleased. Questions, always questions!!!! Mind you, at the next Plinston both Mick Smith and Butch can spin it at the same time in both rooms, that should really p*** us all off and rub salt in the wounds!!!! It is still a great record and one I belivie that Mick S spun first a good few years back so hats off to him for such a quality tune. Another for the Southern Soul Fraternity!!!

Re: eric lomax girl your so good -c/u
Correction - I have been told by my all-seeing Guru Taff that it was Dave Welding, then Butch then Mick then Steve who got the said record in that order - so a slap on the wrist for me, and a slap around the head for the smug Taff!!!!! Oh and he knows, because hes been told, the story behind the 45 I belive. As for John Manship willing to part with £££s for any info on its real identity I think his moneys safe because at 4 figures for one you can bet that said 5 DJs/Collectors will not be rushing to phone him to screw themselves!!!! Has anyone checked with Im back; Im gone;Im back; Im gone etc etc Levine to make sure he hasnt got boxes of this rare gem stashed away, like his other rare items: 4 Vandells and so on??? Anyway, thats the fun of collecting :-)

* Funny how this tune has been spun at the 100 and Cleethorpes for a good few years and not a whisper - now, BANG! Any reason for this or has the North just caught up with it????

Re: eric lomax girl your so good -c/u why???
Just a quick thought....why is it still covered up??? I mean if 5 People/DJs have the record then whats the point? It must be the big ego thing again kicking in...... LOL

The flip side is a great track as well by the way.

Uncover the bloody record someone and let the world know who the real artist of this master piece is. Cover up! Cover off more like.

Greg

Oh dear oh dear oh dear! You two really are lacking in the Manship offering stakes - I have this moment just offered a moggie Sharonette and a minor copy on Black Magic (of Rick Astleys version of I Go To Pieces) to Dave who is understandably quite excited about the offer - I do have in reserve the picture of you Taffy with the nightdress (!!!) which he seems to be VERY excited about. Keep ya posted. :-)

Oh come on boys surely someone can offer an original Take That
(on english) and talking about photos BigO i can go one better i have a picture of Taff, Dave and a sheep called Bobby Mutton at Cleethorpes! still i am glad you realise my first post was being ironic, its all quite funny Dave has been playing this record for a few years now (along with mick&later butch) and getting a good response so to me this is all abit like delayed shock!!! but one thing i can tell you all is that it is a real record on a real label and not an acetate and yes Greg one thing we agree on, the flip side is brilliant...........Louise XX

Your first post was being ironic :-O Damm! Got that wrong and have to call Dave fast!!!!! I agree with Dave and Taffy Lousie - your flip side is brilliant (or have I misread things again ????)

The record is great but having just checked out Manships Rarest Of The Rare section on his site I can tell you that there are other equally as good 7Ts movers waiting to be given an airing.
