I waited nearly a year to see this was it worth the wait........read on........
SITSOM-THE MOVIE
Styrene45 and myself have just spent an hour and half in the company of a group of Detroit's finest,(via celluloid mind!), and for those who are unfortunately not in a position to see the movie yet, here is our review. As a devotee of TSOYA for most of my "fully growed up" life, and a musician (bad one at that), that has listened in awe to "The Bros" for more years than I care to remember, this will obviously be a completely unbiased view! The film hits the spot in just about every way. It is obvious that everyone involved has treated it as a labour of love. The music obviously speaks to a new generation of fans and will probably continue to do so long after the disappearance of CDs, DVDs, Laser Discs, Techno music, synthesized music or the latest "en vogue" musical fashion whatever it may be.
But the real stars of the movie (and in fact the subject matter), are The Bros themselves. There are a number of hair on neck raising incidents in the film and without spoiling it for the likes of my fellow Amigos, DF, DC, and NB etc, Jack Ashford gelling the guys on an impromptu version of Ain't too proud to beg" was worth the admission fee alone. The criticism of the vocal performances and the question of their relevance has missed the whole point of the magic. To have had Diana, Martha, Levi, Stevie etc heavily involved in performing would have turned the whole thing into a Motown" revival theme and once again placed the Bros back into the Shadows of Motown as opposed to the spotlight which was the intention.To see the likes of Uriel Jones banging the skins next to (The Late) Richard "Pistol"Allen while keeping time with Jack Ashfords tambourine and Joe Messinas guitar I wouldn't have missed for the world.The sight of Joe Hunter attempting the splits in a brilliant impromptu flashback to the "Snakepit days" said it all for me. I felt privileged to own their records. He is indeed a man amongst men!
The final stage performance of the movie is a little gut wrenching (I won't spoil it for Alan Pollard), and I now remember why I fell in love with their music in the first place. The vibrancy, the little impromptu licks, the identifiable pick ups, complete control no matter how frantic the pace, and, probably the most important ingredient...the teamwork and enjoyment.If you're a fan of Benny and James, see the movie.
The "Heartbeat and breath of TSOYA" is getting on a bit and I for one am extremely grateful to Mr Slutsky and his team for recording moments in time, with the people who created them, that shaped my life before they all shook off this mortal coil. They really did reach down inside you, grab your soul with their immense talent, rip it out, plant a big wet kiss on it and replace it with the force of one of Bennys sticks on the snare drum!!

Friday January 10th and all roads lead to the Plinston Hall in Letchworth, Herts for 6hrs of across the board Rare Soul with The Usual Suspects and our special guest...Mr Ginger Taylor. With the added attraction of the R&B/RnS room (The Mojo Room) also open this looks set to be just as packed as our opening night. For those yet to experience a Mafia event then in brief the main hall holds 400, the Mojo Room 100+, open 8pm-2am, loads of free parking, cheap bar, fantastic atmosphere and HUGE posters on the wall that have always gone by the end of the night (Hmmm!) Entry is £6 OTD but be warned the event usually sells-out by 10pm on the night and tickets are selling very well for this one. Box Office number for advance tickets with a credit card is 01462-672003. (Letchworth is Jkt 9, A1(M), Jkt 13 M1 and 30 mins from Londons Kings Cross for those who cant open a map) We look forward to welcoming old faces back again and new faces into our family. The Modern Room will be open at the next event (Fri. March 7th) with our regular Guru SOUL SAM resident alongside Taffy and both the Mojo and the main hall open as well. Ok here we go with a look back at last nites xmas monkey.

8 o clock doors open, few early people already in,
Not attempting much vinyl info, as still scrambled and as a lot of nite was spent darting about, was a case of missing a lot of vinyl going ons
First up was Colin Wood one of promoters of the great Halifax Yorkshire Riders Club, got to say many thanks to Colin, fairly long story but end of day Colin put in a lot of effort to do this spot and know myself and Steve really appreciated this.
And so it seemed did the early punters, numbers bit sluggish at first, so dancefloor bit underused. But Col dished out a great set, with many passing on appreciative comments . Nice one and many thanks again for the support Colin. Have to mention Shirley as always good bounce and just when thought had finally got rid of riders flyers....
Big things going on at bar by now, with the monkey 2 4 1 bar promotion going on to 9 30. Numbers were picking up, and also the Chameleon (second) Room with new format "all era soul" was into full swing.
Sue with help from Janine at first then Julie had the door thing going well smooth, cash, free cd, xmas raffle, Dave F doing his bit as well

Next up was Brian Ellis, resident just down the road at Broughton along with Soul Sam. This outing hitting a more 60s format, from bits what I saw/heard all really good stuff. And since have heard a fair few well good remarks.
DMSC Regular Rob Thomas up and at them next, vinyl retention at alltime low at moment, even his first 45 which can remember saying no way will forget this has gone.Help!
By now crowd wise numbers were up on last one and as had passed that oh so satisfying mark called "break even" it was a case of relax
Main guest Dave Rimmer was up for next hour and did a great set, afterwards said how much he enjoyed it says lines of "had a feeling of being let loose". Vinyl managed to grab top 5.from nite.

Steve T on hearing Caressors did his now familar trick of letting it slip that has a copy of this at home somewhere, I did my now familar reaction of shaking my head and wondering if he was sent to torment me! And then was sure that he was, as said cost him 4 quid. Was going to reply stroking my chin, popular Rotherham spin possibly round 1980 but as didnt know that till 15 mins ago didnt

Andy Rix returning from his travels was back on main stage and pushed out a great set, interesting one of nite was a "other" version of "Id think it over twice" which said recently aquired, of course straight away asked Andy details and then, yes straight away forgot them, some other interesting sides, hopefully Andy will fill in details (cop out yeah i know !) Crying Time, The Hurting Is Over, and more monkey were out and about. Great stuff top form.
Finishing off nite was the 30 min "monkey till you drop" spot, bit of a change, in past guy doing local dj spot did it, but steve and meself do it now as felt was missing a bit of contunity.
First had the xmas raffle to get outta way and first winner was Stuart from St Ives who won the ten 45s soul pack, the next up winner choose as prize the bottle of wine, then 30 secs later sent back by his wife to exchange it for one of those furry Monkeys The wine was later on claimed by Ann A
Some current and popular north wales coast stuff got dished out.over the last 30 mins, "Monkey till you drop" meaning anything goes

Crowd wise, was good to see numbers up compared to last one, especally as a fair few other events were on as well. A fair few travellers from all stops North West, Yorkshire, St Ives, Kent, Midlands Cambridge, and beyond
To me seemed a well good buzz to the nite, all feedback that heard so far was/is highly positive

Chameleon Room - The second room format changed (some may note the name ) , this time went for all-era soul format
Chico, Mark S and Phil B had volunteered to supply sound kit for this and supply the main sounds, Along with guy whos name missed apoliges delivered a great mix of sounds
Paul Baldwin was the guest dj and caught a fair bit with some quality year 2k+ stuff.
From all heard the format worked really well, with a great mix of all-era stuff, the full range.Awaiting some plays from the djs and will push up all info as know theres some who are interested. Along with full report of going ons and views from this room. Big thanks to Chico for getting equipment and sorting out. Already had a lot of good feedback, big thanks to all djs and crowd ..........more soon.

Thanks - All Djs, as said all feedback on the nite given it a thumbs up, door crew - all things well smooth, members - one of the enjoyable things about the monkey is the support we get, like people just popping in briefly to show support, plus many helping us out in many ways.

Promotion - As always doing this show flying on the seat of our arse, most of cash goes on making sure that we deliver the best in quality soul and djs, cause of this main promotion is just word of mouth and flyers. If can spread the word, be it on fanzines, telling muckers, internet email lists,and so on be a help.

Future - Watch out for future event date, djs locations and more soon

Endline - Thought attendance may have been dodgy with xmas, events on close by, similar events elsewhere, and all that. Turned out no worries, numbers were up on last one. Own feeling of it was a great nite, of course as co-promoter my view always just that bit different than others. Feel free to post up yours

Hope all had a top xmas! Lots of news and all that All in place for a great nite at the Monkey tomorrow nite (Friday) Djs in main room Andy Rix, Rob Thomas, Guests Dave Rimmer Brian Ellis Colin Wood Second room goes all-era with guest Paul Baldwin bringing bit of revitalised upstairs at tonys to the springfiled along with some of North Wales finest all-era spinners Plus free cd (first 50) and lots of other xmas going ons Buzz about the forthcoming Feb 1st spectacular niter in London - CROSSFIRE being the name with what has to be one of the most strongest dj line ups ever seen, (see earlier post for list) this seems it is going to be one of the big ones in 2003. Likes of this and others such as Prestatyn Weekender and even more "real" quality northern events planned and going strong 2003 seems is going to be a top year! Niters coming up include Mick hs Nottingham one off , Bretby and Goldbourne, along with soul nites all over the place during next few days Still to come, review of Standing In The Shadows Of Motown Film, more plays from recent events, a look back at the year 2002 and more Laughable mainstream media article number 327 : Recent Sunday Observer featured more bullshit from the "fantasy world " of Northern Soul. Keele - the event
Thought was a good one, large crowd in and well busy
To me everything was on the ball
Had a great time and know many other did.
DJ line up was a pleasure to read,
Mick Smith, Butch, Ady C, Bob Hinsley, Dave Welding, Dave Rimmer Keith Minshull Roger Banks
were the billed line up
From what I saw of the floor it was busy most of time and great reaction to all sounds.
Great seeing stuff like Butchs Jean Carter cover up get such a floorfilling reaction
Some great sets, know some thought a few "safe" ones but meself thought balance was achieved
and defintely was no call to retire to cafe while so called big names bore us with overplayed crap
Sounds still ringing in head had to be yet again Vanguards "good times bad times" and the wonderfull Eric Lomax cover up!
(is it true that even mick s doesnt know the true details of this outrageously good tune.
Good to hear Dave Rimmer first time for a while, and reckon his appearance at next monkey will do the buissness
Crowd wise, seemed well busy when got in, espically at the bar, faces from all over Uk , including a fair few havent seen for a while.
Was last day of me sell off spare vinyl thing campign, which was a relief as cant even keep a eye on me fags never mind a record box
And laughs allround at my haggling wheeler/dealer skills
Overall was a great nite to me, next one is on first weekend of April.
And after this one got to say taking in all factors, crowd, venue, dj line up
Even after just two niters its got to be already one of the best Northern Niters around and compared to the "old" keele a completely different event.
Hats off to the promoters!

Caught it for first time for ages, Ginger was guest as always a laugh,
Shame the "how many times Prestwich is mentioned" pool isnt still going, though pretty impresive some of the connections Mr Searling uses as a excuse to mention it "its now coming up to a quarter to Prestwich."
Enjoyable hour before got on the wrong side of the welsh mountains

Flyers were out for this new event - with a top grade line up with djs from some of the best and respected soul clubs/nites/niters in London.
Causing a fair old bit of interest and anticipation this one already.

A friend at work just told me about this...

DA pennebaker and Chris Hegedus go in search of the great soul performers who were left behind by disco.

Know myself was in a state of sore mouth by the amount of drop jaw sounds dished out. Pure enjoyment... !

Funny, dont know if Yorkshire was in some sort of time warp but heard a few thought Halifax and Sheridans was on this weekend, while regular followers of soul source event guide will know score on Halifax at least. Both on next week

Very big buzz on Keele niter next week, seems word is that this revitalised venue is a must get to. Know went to the last one before it closed and the first one after it re-opened and the difference was massive - a complete different event to me. Was a 3 hour period that first nite that rivals any other event in last year for atmosphere and all that to me.
With yet another strong line up inc likes of
Ady Croasdale, Butch, Mick Smith, Dave Rimmer, Bob Hinsley, Roger Banks, Dave Welding, Keith Minshull
It seems that this Decembers niter could be an all out blast, looking forward to it

Albrighton
Real life and travel probs meant had to dip out on this one, reports say was a top one, quality 60/70s sounds, quality passionate djs, great crowd.
Well sounds like venue is back, and with its revised format, ( Paul C said to me format was "Quality 60/70s and punter friendly") sounds like its another "must go to" event for the northern soul fan

Heard not so busy numbers wise but very busy enjoyment wise. Plays will undoubtely be on CSC site soonest (Paul O asked me to pass on how much enjoyed the Dec 7 event - so passed on)

Had an enjoyable time at last weekends Niter/Dayer at Llandudno. As always it had its own unique feel and atmosphere and had a great time.

Think niters been going over 6 years now, main thing I always say about them is they have their own unique feel, style and atmosphere. Hard to explain really, think many factors come in; the promotion, the location, venue, crowd and djs booked. All give event its own identity and feel. Of course being a "local" my view may be a bit different than others, all spoke to gave it a big thumbs up.

Got there fairly early, bit quiet early on, but picked up later. Place had a fair sized crowd in, not packed or over busy but no tumbleweed blowing
either, and numbers had no effect on nite.Think all talked to said was a most enjoyable night.Well friendly feel, and as always a good crack.

Loads of familar faces in attendance, good to meet up with Brian Dunn from Ireland, also greets to Adrian from Nuneaton and his wife who as always took up their regular post Loads of catch ups, most of usual partners in crime knocking about. Fair few familar vinyl sellers and some nice stuff around.

Sounds wise, great mix of sets, the "something for everyone" phase a fair statement, dont think heard one bad set at all, of course not all sounds/styles my cup of tea but all went down well .

Whole mix of nite seemed to work well, few not my cup of teas but others enjoyed. A balanced mix of sounds, current indemanders, fresh stuff, little heards, some good to hear oldies and even some over played oldies for those who like that sort of thing.

As said a enjoyable niter to me

Dayer - to me a great part of whole event, held in rugby club got going bout 10 and finishes at 6

Come midday was a fair old crowd, with many from niter still living the life, cheers to Kit for tapes, Coulson family for enduring me, and all rest caught up with.
Last two were in blazing sunshine and outdoor event really, this time defintly a indoor one, dj wise usually a mix of all sorts, policy being just get on and do what you want, always enjoyable as wide variety and ears have a day of enjoyment. Know missed a few of names, and brain currently on vinyl overload, so apoligies play details crap. ,

first names gone west - was bit quiet till 12 as normal sunday bacon sarnie meet ups going on, guys on dished out some nice stuff for us early morning pint of lager fiends and got event going nicely.

Ritchie Andrews - place busy now, some may know name from past days - his and Bob Foster exploits in 70s, including responsible for supplying many sounds to djs, been back on scene and the vinyl trail! for a while now and dished out a great set of classy quality soulful stuff, some well horny sounds along with the odd quality revival, lots of thumbs up

Dave G just passed on a view of last weeks London do "Soul In The City 1st Anniversary" 5th December 2002 Read on.... Apart from being a great day for Charton supporters i.e. the return 10 years ago to our beloved Valley its also the first anniverary of Soul In The City. Christ is it really a year ago ? We used to meet in a bar in the City of London, get pissed, talk football&Northern Soul .Rob Chadwick was getting divorced&Christmas was fast approaching. We decided to get a few mates together for a Xmas&divorce party . Mac knew a bar which sounded interesting,all the bar maids wore very short kilts! So one evening we found ourselves in McNabs asking the manager if there was any chance of playing a few tapes of Northern. Better than that he had some decks which we could use ! Ok get some flyers printed, Lets have a "do", Djs were Rob, Mac, Paul McKay &myself Dave Greenhill. The first night was a great success&we continued with monthly nights till February until problems with the owners forced us to move to our current venue The Old Blue Last. At that point Rob decided to pack up Djing&we were fortunate enough to recruit Martin Thomson onto the team. As well as our normal monthly nights we also ran a couple of highly successful All - Dayers during the year to cement our place on the London Northern Scene. So to the anniversary night :A fantastic night, lots of the normal London crowd, great atmosphere , loads of rarities&a great oldies set to finish the night from Paul which had the whole place up dancing until nearly an hour after the "official" closing time. Hi Everyone, Just a quick one to say thanks to Martin and the other guys at Soul In The City last night. It was a really great evening, and Id recommend it to anyone who can get there. I would just like to say sorry about the cancellation on Saturday and a huge thank you to everyone who went along to Valatones emergency doo on Saturday night. The whole nightmare started at 5:30, we had just loaded up the cars with all the gear (sound system, decks, lights, records etc.) and were about to set off to Euston when I get a call from Oonagh (who runs the venue) saying that theres an eighteen birthday party booked in for that night and not us!!! Noooooooo... so after the initial tears and tempers we have to ring around and e-mail to try and stop everyone having a wasted journey. That done we call the venue and get them to put a poster up, but we know its not gonna be enough. So we unload the gear out of one of the cars and drive up to greet the people who we couldnt reach, buy them a drink and re-direct them to one of the other doos that were on that night, well that was the plan but it worked out a little bit happier in the end. We got to the venue and spyed a nice pub on the corner with a big window so we could catch any punters and drag them in and buy em a drink etc. meanwhile mobiles are going off all over the shop and the barman hears the whole sorry tale. He then says "Saturday nights our quietest night and Ive got a set of decks, Ill fetch em up". Brilliant we had music and Brummie Mick had a box of records, so I quickly went round the corner and adjusted the poster, and before we new it we had a DIY doo!! The bar was doing so well he had to call in extra staff, and he gave us a lock-in until 1 oclock. Thanks especially to all the boys with record boxes who done spots at a moments notice: Brummie Mick, Kev Moore, Trickster and Dave Rimmer. And thanks to all the punters who got into it and mucked in, you are all wonderful people (PS if I missed getting anyone a drink Ill make up for it when I next see you) All the best Johnny

Weekend just gone.....it seems that was yet another outbreak of quality rare soul all over the UK and beyond!
Heard 100 club was a great niter, (was the farewell to Shifty one) Tonys and Closterworth Fox on the ball as well (see earlier news), good reports of a new first nite of event at Chester.Nottinghams Union Club is yet another quality event that is kicking up a storm and very good reports on this Fridays one
(Know the man behind it Mick H blew us away at the last DMSC with a last minute arranged spot). Over in Sweden it seems that Andy Dyson was causing more rare soul damage at the Real Side soul club.
Next weekend its back on the rare soul trail with events like Albrighton, CSC Dome xmas bash, Broughton, Lowton, Llandudno niter and more all keeping things going.

Saturdays activities saw after last weeks trip to London for CSC 3rd annivesary event a bit of a change
Instead of us hiring a car Steve t had jacked up a pre booked cheap 7 seater discovery thing so we can meander thru the midlands of england to get to
a night of RARE SOUL at the FOX - COLSTERWORTH - DJ,s THE DOWLING DUO, CARL LLOYD, ANT PRICE
Guest DJs STEVE THOMAS,CIRO,JOHN WALMSLEY
cutting it short, got there 150 miles 2 and half hours ish later, no probs, its south of cworth if going, as we tried the north bit first as garage semed to think were 2.
Nice venue, hotel/pub style venue on A1. Nice layout inside, and smart floor, record seller area and minor stuff like the bar all ok
Crowd wise, place wasnt packed and was told it was a bit quieter than usual, due to the number of events on elsewhere? Was just a few familar faces including dmsc 100% regulars Stuart and Wendy I, from St Ives, Oogie from soul talk come over and said hello along and passed on his quote "often say if we was only allowed to attend ONE Soul night a year....COLSTERWORTH would be the one!!!!!"
A lot of almost familar or not regonised faces, as was the first time in this part of the world on soul side, made a nice change meeting people who come from such exotic places as Grismby and beyond, all a bit cosmopoltian compared to Bolton etc
Sales box up and out and did the "buy my unwanted records as xmas is coming". Nite before did well, not so much this nite, but a few deposits and phone numbers gave hope of buying little Timmie Hughes that new crutch.
Some interesting stuff on sale, two copies of one of our lot much searched for and much desired on other side of country want were found.
Seemed a lot of interest in early soul stuff here by buyers with ought that looks just a bit old being given a listen to.
Talked to a few including the group who run night, as told was started in a very familar and often repeating fashion nowadays. Not their actual words but "its the same old story"
Sick of hearing the same boring safe stuff that gets pushed out at some venues
Decided to get together and start up their own rare soul nites, playing the music what they want to hear
Crowd seems to agree! Many knowledgable and respected people here, and the whole feel of nite was people coming to enjoy the music events like this seem to thrive on.

Great stuff, a much needed refresh of my soul senses , quality sounds from quality djs, no policy, no dance floor pressure, leaving the djs to deliver what they wanted, all gave out quality worthwhile sets, which reflected their own tastes and style.

As may have noticed given up notes, memory tricks, or even efforts of trying to remember loads of what was played as not really time or the mental thought process at moment
Basic feel of whole nite was a bit of a early edge, some more than others, r&b tracks out and about, along with mix of all styles of 60s rare quality soul
Seemed the djs enjoyed doing it, know steve t says he did.
Tonys: Blackburn
Come around 1 am it was time to move on, with choice of down the a1 to 100 club niter or up to Tonys Blackburn niter, the small fact car had to be back by 9am made the choice bit easier, off up a1 and thru to the drive round blackburn 11 times part of the nite.
Got to say numbers were a bit down, however was a great feel and friendly buzz to the place, as always much catch up and sorting out of things were done. Think one of appeals to me of Tonys to me is the local pub feel of cafe bit, go in and straight away feel on familar ground, familar faces, familar greets and so on. While at times dont always enjoy some of the sounds some of the djs push out , though suppose someone somewhere must, usually they are balanced out by a quality set by other dj.
The disapperance of the whole worlds stock of latest dmsc flyers caused a laugh or two, though a bit of bin-diving retrieved them.Caught up with Paul B whos well up for his guest bit in the revamped second room at next dmsc, informed him no longer billed as Paul "Banging " Baldwin as could be mis-interpeted!
Well nite was coming to end for us and just caught the annoucement of "thanks for the support" message over the mic which went down well, and it was get back to where we come from.
Bit of a long one,gotta say recommend the Rare Soul nite at the Fox in Closterworth, a night of quality stuff, great crowd, great feel and thanks to all concerned for a great enjoyable nite. Another event that belongs on that ever growing list of Quality Rare Soul Events in uk where quality soul and punter friendly feel are the main driving force! You know it makes sense
As always Tonys was Tonys and though we only had a few hours as always most enjoyable, some quality sounds and a good old laugh!
Well after the last two weekends travel marathons, I looked at the next weeks events and was well relieved
Next weekend sees a niter at ....Llandudno and its a 5 min walk from my front door, no hire cars , people movers, hours of taking piss out of each other or inanae vinyl questions, no petrol cash, just pick up me fags and outta door.
Mmmm just saw details of a weekender in germany , dont even think about it!!

Anyone planning on going to Valatone tonight dont. The venue has been double-booked. Please spread the word were trying to call as many as possible but wed hate for anyone to have a wasted journey. Cheers, Johnny Unfortunately was out all last nite, so couldnt approve the above posting. So may just be a bit late! Know Johnny tried many means to spread the word including posting info in event guide, using internet discussion list and all that and said was going to stand at enterance and explain. Unfortunate and hopefully most/all got informed, Though havent seen Johnny for a while heard he is still a all-round good guy (someone described him as that cockney with a rockabilly haircut during his recent irish visit) who has put a lot of effort into this event and am sure he offers apoligies to anyone caught out. Still the soul goes on, the 100 club Dec Niter saw the farewell to Shifty, Tef and Sharon, Of course reports of last nites going ons are most welcome, been a while since had any reports from here, so before you play those 45s picked up, search for that flyer with that oh so important phone number, how about sending in your view on nite : short or long we dont mind. In a "spirit of the blitz" style any soul types unfortunate to get caught out, let us know what did you do instead?? did you go down to the underground and sing cockney singsongs with other sheltering soulies or maybe got legless in that sterile winebar as always pass them views/reports on! While posting could be considered a way of supporting soul source , it could be even considered greater, as any post instantly adds content to site, giving the next visitor more to read, who by that post may be encouraged to reply and so on..... so when you come back instead of just seeing the same articles, there may be a hotbed of disccusion, views, info all awaiting you! Well what a weekend, it started just how I wanted, it to with Janine picking up myself and Steve Heinsen from Bedford. Made really good time getting to Willington near Derby, (a mini-nighter, 9 til 4 a.m.) with Janine expertly and safely driving her way through the snow and other associated bad conditions. We arrived around a quarter to ten, and were pleasantly surprised just how many people were there, given the conditions, and the fact that there were at least 3 more soul nights on within a 40/50 mile location. Some early dancers were going through their paces, so all in all the promise of a good night was in store. As the night progressed the crowd built up to probably between 250 to 300 and included fellow KTF members, Andy Humberston and Dale Rose (Dancer) and Mandy P.

The atmosphere on the night was excellent, and everyone seemed to be in particularly good humour, even Dale when he was hit in the head by a snowball aimed with great precision, by the modess Janine 🙂 The lovely Sandy didnt bring any food with her, so I did get a little peckish later on in the night, but I was determined not to let my hunger pangs get the better of me and battled on against the starvation as most guys would do.:-) The dance-floor after 11 was mostly packed right through til about 3 and then people started to disappear, the usual selection of sounds were on offer, with Kenny Burrell supplying the rarer stuff. Whatever was played on the night was right to be honest, it was a party atmosphere and thoroughly enjoyable for everyone.

Onto Saturday night: I decided to try Mansfield as a warm up before Trentham, difficult to describe really, as again a party atmosphere prevailed, there was even a fancy dress competition. But for me it never quite got off the ground, the dance-floor was atrocious, Ive never seen wood that had been furrowed before, .....well until tonight. 🙂 It really was almost impossible to dance on, everybody was making the effort, but thats exactly what it was an effort. I did see Carl from Nottingham do an incredible sequence of drops during Edwin Starrs - "Time" but to anybody who has witnessed Carl dancing in the past, this will come as no surprise. Kenny Burrell was again guesting and as ever enjoying himself behind the decks. We left at just before midnight to make our way to Trentham, again the weather was very bad, but after about an hour or so, we arrived at our destination.

Great sets from the "Rimmerman" and "Butch" and also Guy Hennigan. Although the numbers did not match Willington the night before, there was still a fair few there, and the dance-floor was normally full. The floor was a little fast for most, but you cant have everything. 7 a.m. quickly arrived, and bought to an end, what in my opinion was a marvellous all-nighter and one which I look forward to going to again in the near future. As ever, these days there were some other KTFrs there, Michelle and Caz if Im going to name-drop.:-) New years eve, arrived and I hadnt really made a decision where to go, the soul nights on offer, although tempting, involved a lot of travelling and all had early finishes. Through Janines contacts on the mod scene, it turned out that there was a mod all-nighter on in Clacton so the die was cast, and off I went with Janine. Ive got to say from the off, Im well impressed with the time and effort taken by the "Mods" to ready themselves. A great deal of attention to detail is obviously paid, from the Steve Marriot hair cuts, to the smart suits and dresses. It is very much an image thing, and the dedication to it can only be admired, almost a religious fixation with everything 6Ts. I was introduced to no end of "Mods" young and old, male and female and I thought one of the guys Caspar I think his name was, really looked cool. There is a lot of young blood on this scene, eighteen year olds etc, and if as I suspect some drift to the northern scene, it bodes well for the future. Musically I would say that half the music played tonight had northern roots, with particular emphasis on R&B. A lot of R&B sounds currently on offer on the traditional northern scene, were played here tonight, and all graciously accepted and danced to. I would have liked to have heard more Motown or Atlantic stuff, as Im sure these would have been played in yesteryear, but at the end of the day, it was new years eve.:-) Although I stood out like a sore thumb, my tie lasted from the car until I got in the venue 🙂 a lot of the "Mods" took the time to talk to me, (hello to Helen and Paul) and it was interesting discussing the 6Ts with lads of no more than 21. I must say as well they were pretty knowledgeable, and had researched the subject quite thoroughly. The style of dancing is definitely different in the main, but northern steps are creeping in, wont be long before theyre in spencers and vests.:-) I must confess that as 6 a.m. came and went I fell asleep, the night was supposed to finish at 5 a.m. but carried on until about half past seven, at which time Janine woke me up and told me it was time to go. I didnt fall asleep through boredom, I must emphasise, but through being dog tired, the weekend had finally caught up with me.:-) An excellent end to the year if somewhat different, and I look forward to seeing some of the younger "Mods" at various northern events throughout the year. Finally a happy new year to all the people I have met on and off KTF throughout the year, and I look forward to meeting all of you again, and some new faces, over the coming year.

Dome CSC, well after moving back to the homeland a while back , my attempts to get regular to Dome, slowly got less and less, the vast amount of events, petrol prices, other involvements all meant trips down south had to be curtailed a bit. As been a bit of time since did a review of a csc nite, standby for a return of the sense of puzzlement that usually accompanies these reviews.

Written for off-list thing with soul talk bit added on for list, so apoligies if context not quite right

Well after a fair sized gap since making the trip down south, felt the third anniversary was a good time to get down to what have always considered one of the most enjoyable soul nites that have been to.
Plan was to get a full coach load of the worse dmsc reprobates around, who are currently not in jail or exile in spain and burn a path of crazy rare soul mayhem right across the face on England.

Well that was the plan ! Just say am handing in me travel agent badge right now,
After 30 + expressing a def interest plans were firm, but after a week of a lot of drop-outs, on Monday the monkey bus turned into first a minibus, then on wed a 7 seater and then finally due to high cost a five seater jap estate from bangersr us a couple of hours before the setoff ( Anyone planning similar watch out for the mileage extra costs ). A lot of factors, work, xmas, cash, came into play. and the day of travel saw frantic last min changes as trying to get the lowest cost. Have to apologise to the 3 who couldnt be fitted in, but if had got bigger vehicle cost almost doubled and would have made the trip a non-starter
Still managed to assemble a fairly desperate bunch of dmsc members with the likes of kit the jock, dick john, bob shaffer, paul o and meself all geared up for a trip down south.

Trip down was a record! After the usual north wales pick up confusion, have done this 101+ times and still goes wrong, wrong turnings, delays and so on.
Once all picked up and I had been substituted as driver we set off. We managed to get from Springfield Hotel (dmsc home base) area to Tufnall Park in 3 and a half hours....on a Friday nite? and with a stop ? Yep, as slept most of way have no idea how or even if it was legal, but just say was most welcome.Gotta say thanks to the CSC promoters/door staff as they were expecting us, and got a good welcome, "that monkey lot is here" along with the latest status symbol for the discerning soul types the anniversary keyring.(Top quality and already replaced me merc thing)

Thru doors and first noticed that a few changes, the cloakroom has gone, which was a bit discerning, as better half Sue had spent two years doing the coats in there and a few funny stories could be told. But then things were back to normal with familiar sight of Nick B dishing out flyers for next big event in London (next friday is Scenesvilles Christmas party at the Glasshouse club in Blackfriars).Fairly packed already with a good feel, time to hit bar.Many faces hadnt seen for a while so was a nite of catch up and all that.

Crowd wise, official figure was 400+ and as said had a good feel, as always whole range of age groups which is always refreshing, on travels round met people knew from all over Cambridge, midlands, north west, scotland, holyhead, finland, yorkshire - all of them,north east, south west, south east etc etc - be easier to have put all over uk and beyond.

Record room was busy with many familiar faces, Andy Dyson said he was fairly busy, an american seller seemed to being doing well, as always me own vinyl account was in red so avoided temptation of browsing. A request from Claire - Needs help finding 45 of "satan wont you let me" - Brenda Starr - Atco anyone help? get in touch if you can please.Jo Wallace was doing the cloakroom thing in corner, a quick bit of chat bout chatham soul in early 80s.

Sounds wise - not sure how much or if format has changed a bit since last time, and as an anniversary nite always going to be a bit different, heard many familiar CSC sounds, a fair few new unfamilars, a lot more 70s+ along with a fair few revivals, thought heard an an andy rix instru (the ive got something one)? though as out for an enjoyable nite wasnt that sure. Mick Smith was main guest and Pete Hulatt Will add playlists when out so can get full view rather than my snapshot recollections.

Nite seemed to finish too early, the lights went on for final finish and then spotted more who had to either catch up or sort something out . Greg finished nite with the "thats it no more, sorry no more, no thats it. " ...."oh ok then" and then after a pause let loose the Kindly Shepards which worked really well and a great way to underline the nite.

Got out off there, then a short nip up the motorways of england back to the homeland, arriving at 7 am time taken up with vinyl trivia, stories, solving all the world problems and all that. An impromptu after event session as had to wait till hand in hire car.

My view on nite was well enjoyable, it had been too long since last down there and had a great old time, the rest of the dmsc outing all thought nite was well enjoyable and impressed with sounds, feel of place and enthusaism of everyone and glad they risked the perils of putting their lives in hands of dmsc travel division

After 3 years on from that memorable first nite, glad to report that CSC lot still going strong, and after all the events of last year am well pleased to say that.
And sure that come next year be saying just the same again .

As a footnote, on events of last 12 months could say a lot as have strong feelings on some of the occurrences that went on by so called "figures" of this scene.
But for now all I will say is big thanks for the last 3 years to all CSC, the current crew plus all those who have been involved in the last 3 years especially including the original promoter Matt J.

Often read people saying how this scene is crying out for new blood, freshness and all that.
Well CSC have been doing that for 3 + years now, continually attracting fresh young soul fans, a young (compared to other events -evil grin- ) dj and promotion set up, fresh ideas, and best of all doing things the right way but as proved last nite the CSC is still strong and doing what it is good at.
Offering a quality rare soul punter friendly event

Hats well off to them, in fact throw the things up in air!!!!!!!!

Everyone have met who has this, has said that this cd is ***** excellent, and is now an integral part of their cd player. Heres some notes on it from Ady C which may be of interest
SHRINE: THE RAREST SOUL LABEL VOL 2 • CDKEND 190

The catalogue number gives it all away.
This is KENT 190 and were already up to CDKEND 214 with the Eddie & Ernie release. It was only one small problem, but that was enough to delay us by two years; the tapes for three of the tracks werent good enough and it took us that long to sort it out. Unfortunately thats not so unusual for Ace, who try to ensure the finest sound quality for all our releases.
Of course it was worth the wait and we can now conclude Kents venture to bring you the world of Shrine Records; the most revered and talked about rare soul label ever. Volume 2 of the story wraps up all the outstanding releases and unissued tapes that appeared on the Horaces LPs a dozen years ago, but also has some outstanding exclusives of its own. The most notable of these are the two Bobby Reed tracks that I discovered in a tape vault about five years ago and which happened to be outstanding 1966 dancers. Baby Dont Leave Me is typically Shrine with a pounding fast beat, strings and heavenly backing singers, while Caldonia Brown is more Jackie Wilsons mid-60s Brunswick style.
Label owner Eddie Singleton was of course working at Brunswick as well at the time and had previously produced Jackies SOUL GALORE LP. While Bobby Reed had also had a Brunswick release of his Clay Town You Are single, so the connection is not surprising. From the same period came the exquisite Wisemens ballad I Wouldnt Mind Crying, written by Eddie and one of his favourite pieces of work. Whilst also in the slow and moody vein, is a lovely DC Blossoms track This Is Your Last Chance, that was found tucked away on the original Shrine 1/2" master tapes and had been missed when I originally went through them with Eddie.
There's also the rousing Take A Look At Your Baby by the Cautions; that originally came from the Scepter studios where the master tapes were left when Eddie hurriedly left New York. It is from the same session that produced Fall Guy and the late 1966 influence of a very slightly off-beat rhythm can be felt on both songs. So thats five new Shrine recordings exclusive to this CD, and the final track Peaches Baby is virtually in this category. This is the rarest of the rare; the last release to be confirmed when Shrine super-sleuth Andy Rix found one of the group (who we only knew about from what we then considered to be an unissued master tape of My Only Love), who confirmed that the single had come out and that indeed he had a copy.
As the A-side Peaches Baby had never been heard apart from as the instrumental backing track, its arrival was eagerly anticipated. But tragedy struck when it was posted across the Atlantic Ocean with virtually no protection, on this the most brittle of all labels, and arrived in pieces. Some time later US collector and dealer Lew Stanley picked up a copy and kindly allowed us to dub the precious 45, so we can at last include it and complete the story.
The sound quality is admittedly poor and may have been the reason for the scarcity of the disc if, as has been speculated, it was withdrawn from sale for this reason. But the effort, tears and wranglings that have gone into finding the thing meant it was inevitable it would make it on to this CD if only for curiosity's sake alone. One or two of the other tracks are aurally below Kents usual standard, but that was a problem that no doubt contributed to the complex reasons for Shrines rarity and collectability.
The Cairos Don't Fight It is the other most notable example with no master tape and this dub actually taken from a super-rare mint copy of the record but still sounds audibly confused. Its musical merits are high and again its a must have on the CD.
When master tapes were available the quality of Shrines work is fully revealed and tracks like the Prophets If I Had (One Gold Piece), the Enjoyables Shame and Sidney Halls Im A Lover shine out as great examples of mid 60s soul music at its most sophisticated and creative.
Eddie Dayes ballad, What Am I Gonna Do is a slow soul masterpiece and Ray Pollards This Time and The Cautions No Other Way are Northern Soul classics whose mid 80s spins created enough enthusiasm to get the scene through its darkest days. Northern Soul and 60s soul in general owes a huge debt to Eddie Singleton, Raynoma "Miss Ray" Gordy, Stanley Ossman, Carl Kidd, Kenny Lewis and Harry Bass, along with all the artists, for pursuing a dream that wasnt realised but left us a wonderful legacy of music to savour and enjoy for ever.

Regrettably, despite having read a lot about them, we havent been able to attend the previous DMSC nights so, when the five of us arrived at 8.45pm we were all officially monkey virgins!!

Having paid our soul tax, we walked into the main room and immediately you could tell the room had atmosphere - WHY HAVENT WE GOT VENUES LIKE THIS IN SHROPSHIRE!! we all cried. What a great place!!

Having grabbed some seats we headed for the bar and that was the second pleasant suprise of the night. £6.40 for five drinks!!!

I thought (perhaps in some bizarre tribute to Stafford top-of-the-world) that the beers were being charged at 1980s prices!!

Whilst at the bar, the tunes started to hit me. Hang on, I thought. Were still in the first hour of this night and already the big tunes are playing. If the tunes are this good early on, things could only get better
- And I wasnt disappointed!! It was like being new to the scene again.
LOADS of records Ive NEVER heard before - Superb. A track by Prince Paul was played twice and this was the highlight of the night for me. WHAT AN AWESOME RECORD and Ive never heard it before.

Taking my seat again, my aged fellow soulie Chic said what we were all thinking, this is like an allnighter atmosphere, he said. Its like the
tunes that used to get played at Droylesden and Hyde Town Hall. This truly was praise indeed as these two venues rank highly in my list of all
time favourite venues.

Suddenly on comes Teardrops by Soul Bros. Inc. and were up and dancing
This was to be the third suprise of the night!!

I have, for over 10 years assumed the slippyist dancefloor in the world was at a soul nite we used to go to at a working mens club in Leigh. THE
SPRINFIELD HAS PROVEN ME WRONG!! What have you done to the thing!!?? It was like ice!! I went up to ask the DJ for a record at one point and nearly paid the ultimate price. Surely no-one in the history of Rare Soul has ever fallen on their @rse on a dancefloor whilst simply walking across it
(unless very drunk!!).

Anyway, I soon learned that by dancing on the edge of the carpet I could survive and I will make sure that next time I wear trainers!! Ill have to do something because when youre hearing tunes like Troy Dodds, Arthur Willis and Buddy Smith not dancing is not an option!!

As you can tell, we are now all firmly Monkey converts and we will be regulars at future nights. My only regret is that the Christmas one clashes with the do we run at the White House in Cannock. Anyway, I hope that goes well and we will all be back with you at the Springfield for more quality soul in 2003.

A Tale of Monkeyness

Well another monkey and another cracking nite

A Most enjoyable nite!!

Of course am involved in running of this event along with Steve Holyhead Thomas and cynics could say a totally biased view, and tell the truth they are more than likely right, but that’s that. As always a disturbing lack of vinyl info.

After 6 months of Monkey, one of things learnt to expect on the nites is the unexpected and this time was no different. First signs of this were when we pulled up into car park we spotted Elvis, Dorothy (from Wizard of Oz) and Fred Flintstone walking into the hotel. Straight up. Thought here we bloody go…. just what I need. Turned out what I thought was a wedding in other room was actually a fancy dress do, so bit of a relief and fears eased, lucky enough that as the bouncers were on the ball that’s all saw of them all nite.

Back to reality as event got going, Lawrence and then meself took care of warm up numbers seemed a bit slack compared to previous at first, not that much fighting for the half price drinks, but picked up later on. Sue and Julie looked after the door thing, was going to say monkey ******** but took note of your concerns. And the Blue Peter style Monkey Newsletter was out with details of next event, coach trip and playlists.

Mark Speakman was first up and gave nite a great start with some classy selections doing the local start up thing. The Imperial Cs - Somebody tell her (Phil A Soul) Virgina Blakely - Dont let nobody love you (Mojo) Bernie Williams - Baby Baby (Deesu) were just some of the sounds he gave out thru nite.. Mick H (notts) was a late addition to the rota, travelled up with Andy D and Chalky and though many were still arriving and dance floor wasn’t being hammered yet dished out a great set with some well “ouch” sounds. Which quite simply just enhanced the rep the monkey has for quality.
Caught up with a few well-travelled not seen for a while faces, Nick G (member# 001) and mate Mick travelled up from Peterborough, (famous now as the person who asked if Colwyn Bay be a good place for a pre-event chill). Crowd wise, as always this monkey nite was different than the others, fair old gang of hardcore regulars in now all living the life, regulars from close and afar, regards to the regular St Ives lot, a few refugees just back from the latest Soul In The Sun, all the North Wales and North West quality fiends and all the travellers who showed up. Including sizeable mobs from Telford and Shrewsbury areas.
Got to say crowd wise this was the best one yet for me, not numbers thru door wise but in feel and atmosphere, all were just there for a quality nite of rare soul, which made our diplomatic –“this is not a oldies nite” notice just a bit surplus.
Carl Willingham, (standing in for Andy Rix – awol in Cyprus) took over the first Monkey regular spot and gave out a great well balanced set, likes of Isonics – Sugar, Faye Simmons - Please Tell Me Im Yours, and gave me a well nice surprise when he dished out the great “Love stormy weather”, as was hoping that Andy D would give it a blast later so got me pudding early, After Mick H, Carl just picked up that torch of quality rare soul and ran with it. Great stuff and had great feedback. Andy Dyson out of the traps next, what can I say, last time heard Andy was at Llandudno connoisseurs weekend, and he blew away then, this time should have had ambulances on stand by, such was the amount of rare soul damage given out with likes of “Demanding man” – Sensations, and Locations causing major casualties. Someone said recently he’s one of the top 3 UK current djs and after tonight gotta say to me that tag is well deserved. Rob Thomas jumped up next and pulled out some right corkers including the one off unofficial monkey anthem instru of Crying Time by the “lets have a go without her band” and likes of “oh isnt she a pretty girl” and much more. A great set by Rob led us to the “monkey till you drop” final half hour. Where anything goes, numbers at this time were thinning out a bit but Mark S took no notice and sealed the nite with an end of nite mix.

Final View – Sounds and make up of crowd wise, up there with the best of them, both cracking.
After 6 months monkying think can safely say we have achieved what we set out, a regular event featuring a brand of quality rare soul sounds and quality DJs. We set out to offer something different than what other events offer in this part of the world , (no disrepect to any other venues, many quality ones around here, and have had many enjoyable times at them.). But we felt would give what we consider a good nite out after all if we offered similar or the same as others what would be the point! As always said its never been about the money, anyone witness our attempts to balance the books can verify that.

In past don’t say much apart from “Its just a soul nite” even though have had some quotes such as “Best soul nite ever been to” “This is what its all about” etc etc Modesty made us keep such remarks to ourselves in past, but as this is a biased view might as well let loose with some of comments on the nite and after

Numbers a bit down on last but had no effect on atmosphere, or feel a good quote from Cambridge way was along lines of was “here for the soul and people, if was just after a crowd would have gone to……”

Just a quick shout to say what a great night was had by all those brave souls who attended the Kempston Rovers Rare Soul bash in Bedfordshire on Friday 8th Nov with Kent supremo and 100 club main man Ady C. (now with his Samson like locks shorn at last! Thank God) putting in a fantastic set featuring all the usual exclusives including the brill Gerri Granger acetate (discovered at the same time as the Ben E King acetate Ady tells me, just to rub salt into my open wounds!), Bobby Reed, Luther Ingram (which I want so bad) etc. Ady kept the floor full and with the other guest DJ from Birmingham (sorry I forget your name) also giving it some serious welly the place was rockin. Even the main men Hammie and Pete Hugelips couldnt put a damper on the atmosphere, continuing to play great sets between them. By 3am I was beat and hobbled off to my bed, leaving Lollipop Pete, Winston and Juliette and the others to it. Cracking night from one of the best little soul clubs around. Dont miss the next one. Seems like it was just a week ago that I was somewhere in North London trying to find a night club where word was some lot called Capitol Soul had regular soul nites that were worth getting to. Cutting it short, well these nites later moved location to the Dome and the rest is history.
As 3rd anniversary coming up, thought throw up this special feature to mark the occasion. (A revised version of this featured in recent "Shades Of Soul"). Gotta say have had some of the most enjoyable nites ever at the CSC events, and seeing it reach the third year point as strong and healthy as it is now a most welcome sight. Hats off to all concerned and involved from the early days to now from myself and Sue (asked to pass on congrats and regards to all) And see you at the function
One of the most talked about set-ups on the Rare Soul scene over the last couple of years without a doubt has been The Capitol Soul Club based at The Dome Club in North London. November 29th 2002 will see it celebrate it’s 3nd Anniversary at said venue, so what makes their events special enough for folk to travel to from all over the World, let alone the UK.and it’s not even an all-nighter!? First, a brief history of the club - The CSC was actually formed over 4 years ago by Irish Greg and Alan Handscombe, quickly joined by fellow resident DJ Carl Fortnum. Their events were initially based at “The Bar” in Shoreditch, where it ran for ten months before the venue’s enforced closure. There was already a buzz about the nights within the London scene and the guys were determined not to let it die at that point, so it quickly relocated to the infamous North London Pub-rock venue, The Dome, in Tufnell Park North London, with it’s larger capacity and superior amenities. At this point Matt Jahans joined the Team to look after the promotional duties including one of the first web-sites devoted to a Northern Soul club. Matt decided to call it a day this year so all the gang now share the promotional duties.
The resident DJ crew expanded early in 2000 with the addition of long time collector/music industry bloke, David Flynn. Every soul-session features a special guest DJ, and the role call includes heroes like Kenny Burrell, Andy Dyson,Adey Croasdell, Mick Smith, Gary Spencer, Andy Rix, Shifty,Tony Smith, Dave Rimmer,Dave Holt,Stuart Tyler, Roger Banks,Russ Vickers, Robo, Paul Baldwin, Ian Cunliffe, and even Keb Darge in the early days! Along with the main “star-turn” and the residents, there’s also an “early-doors-warm-up-and-coming guest”, usually one of the regular punters who has aspirations of getting behind the hallowed Dome decks.stars of tomorrow hopefully!
So,why is it that folk are talking about it all time and how has it become so successful so quickly? Firstly, the old word-of-mouth Northern Soul grapevine (including the internet chat groups KTF and Soul-talk), has lead to people giving it a try, and most then become regulars too! There is no better promotion than a personal recommendation, As already mentioned, yes we have a club web-site for reviews, photos, dates etc and yes we still flyer clubs but the positive word of mouth system is the real winner. Secondly, the main London clubs all co-operate with each other, compliment each others play lists and never clash on purpose. Thirdly, the CSC operates every other month, which means if you miss one you ‘ve got a long wait to the next one! The “Scenesville” club (recently celebrated it’s 2nd anniversary), alternates with the Dome, so there’s always a top Friday night doo to go to in London once a month. Add to these the long running once a month bash at “These Old Shoes” plus many other clubs like Soul in the City etc and the legendary all-nighters at the 100 Club, and one’s diary is now full of quality sessions to attend within the M25!
Between them they cover all aspects of 60’s soul and cater for everyone. Breaking the CSC down further - The Dome music policy The music is the absolute #1 top priority! The venue advertises, and the DJs stick to the club’s full-on 60’s music policy (OK, there’s also a small amount of 70’s/cross-over, but only a few mind!) There’s a very strong love of 60’s music within London, encompassing every genre within that time scale, and indeed it is from the more Mod/beat style clubs that fresh blood has been recruited, giving us a Rare Soul scene for the twenty-first century. The CSC will play fast and mid-tempo tunes, just as long as they are danceable and soulful as that is what the club set out to do.to play and dance to these kinda sounds.and yes all the CSC deejays are on the floor dancing as much as anyone!
The split when you come down to it is roughly 20% classic 70’s oldies, 20% 80’s oldies, 50% under played semi-knowns and 10% Dome exclusives. We’ve also given away over 500 copies of free tapes to punters since the beginning in order to spread the sounds - a practice we will continue with! The Dome venue It boasts an enormous wooden dance-floor, a faultless sound system with sound engineer present throughout the night (don’t forget it’s a major pub-rock venue so the acoustics are fantastic!), a large bar and a separate record dealers room (free tables dealers please note), all for a mere £7 entrance fee. It’s also easy to find, easy to park right next to, and has a pub underneath it to meet up at prior to the 9.30pm kick off, not to mention the abundance of kebab, fried-chicken, fish’n’chip shops and a cab office, all still open after the doo! The Dome crowd For some of the crowd, dancing is the priority, for others it’s the tunes (and naturally for a few it’s the large bar!), but for whatever reason, the membership is now well into four figures, so be early every time as it’s always a lock out by midnight! The crowd then generate one of the best positive-up-for-it atmospheres at any Rare Soul club, ever, and that’s key point number two! The floor always fills quickly (already talc’ed before folk arrive!), they dance with a passion, applaud tracks readily, and the overall buzz is so infectious you can’t help but get swept along with it, every time! The average age is early 30’s (plenty of 20 and 40 somethings, mind!) and most folk are there to dance and enjoy the music right to the very end at 3am. They receive every track as an equal and have no hang ups about dancing to a brand new track.
Everyone is there to enjoy themselves with like-minded people and the best music in the World, whether they’ve driven down from the Midlands and the North, across from Wales and the West Country, flown in from Ireland, France, Sweden, Spain, Italy or Germany, or simply hoped on the tube or bus! Most memorable Dome night Easy. we were privileged enough to have Sidney Barnes sing live on stage in June ‘01 - his first time in the UK ever, and the soulies there that night raised the roof. and almost drunk the bar dry! So, at the end of the day, it seems that the combination of a clear musical policy, the right mixture of classic, forgotten and exclusive tunes, added to a crowd with a positive approach to the scene, all mixed together at a pukka venue charging a reasonable entrance fee is a winning combination!?!
Long may it be as simple as that, as enjoyable as that as politics free as that and that the club goes from strength to strength, there truly is no place like Dome!

Soul Talk The premier rare soul discussion list has just reached its two year mark. As always never standing still, to mark the occasion has added three new staff to its line up. A right old mix of people who are just "passionate" about the music, and will take the list to even higher grounds. Myself after starting Soul Talk up reckon its time for a bit of change and have hung up moderatering hat, like to thank all those who have supported list, from the early days up to now, when started off its aim was to give "all" soul fans a place where they can enjoy talking about the music they enjoy with none of the baggage that some feel a need to keep spewing up. Lowton A busy mini-niter (till 4am ) at Lowton last nite.
Looking forward to this one as had a smart line up, late finish and Lowton with its many rooms, places to chill and catch up is always a bit of a laugh Few words , some re-cycled quips and a disturbing lack of vinyl info follows. Lowton - things as always the same, Car park was full and as always no matter what that guy tells me when driving can never find how to get that bit around the back. In and at em. Somewhere along the line, have picked up part time job, ended up with 3 sets of flyers to dish out, ususal attempts to try and clear DMSC bulk lot, also CSC and Yorkshire Riders to give out, as distribution follows my travels (bar and record bit) can expect a audience of alcoholic vinyl deviants at your events. (a often used and repeated quip)
Rooms: Main hall was busy most of nite, thinned out from about 1am, but what saw all went down well and floor was busy Last weeks word of dj order was out of window as two of the guests Rob T and Andy R had a long drive back ahead so timings were changed, 3 rooms meant sounds wise recollection worse than normal!!Due to current mood had stuff like Jamica Underground rattling round head rather than 6ts covers titles. Andy Rix and Rob Thomas can be classed almost local jocks now as residents just down the road at the monkey, missed most of Rob Ts but heard went well, caught most of Andy Rixs and highlight being at long last hearing instrumental. Crying Time out and about, myself and others always class it as a DMSC sound, but strangely enough has never been played there, email for why if the mystery causes sleepless nites.
Dished out many of his big ones, fast approaching if not already classic status, Is Switch Around up there as a all-time classics yet or what???All floor filled, going down down well with the crowd. Missed a fair bit of Terry Ds due to other room wanderings, anyone fill in his latest plays?? Caught half of Gingers, for David Flynn made determined effort to id that "catchy" track (just to say to him you know that catcgy track youre on about that catchy track....errr its gone) but nought fitted the way he described it , though he pulled out some blinders, all details were inserted into brain, but wiped out by later modern influx, Ian Cunliffe pulled out a good quality one set, Mean Miss-treater, No Good guy, Lazy , being a couple of highlights, Carl Willingham finished nite off , with great mix of his top stuff, a couple of first hears to me and the odd revival or two.
Place was packed, as said thinned out later on ish, but main floor seemed stay busy and caught lot of all style top quality stuff Modern room - spent a fair bit of time in there, what is going on with this modern soul thing, one minute bit fed up of mid -tempo sound a like stuff, or some of that MTV flavoured mush.Then all of a sudden have a month or two of getting assaulted nah slaughtered by some of best stuff heard for a long long while, not sure if a case of just catching the right djsbut tonite ...wow! most impressive spots caught were by Pete Haigh and Mark Grice (mixing skills-ouch! flawless)- partial memories of tracks were by Jamacia Underground Blaze remix - just realised got this here at home via davey dixon - love existing being title great stuff Secret Sounds - Baby Come Home? a three initialed thing (yeah hopeless mike, I know) and a fair lot quality sounds that scream out the need to be id'd
R&B Room
As said last time place seems to be on a roll, and this time was definitely rolling. Djs caught featured likes of Roger Banks, Robbo, Mark Morgan, Mark Stewart, plus should imagine a lot more. With a well wide range of styles and sounds. Note to Lowton DJ debut of one of the regular yorkshire crowd Mark Stewart who have made this their homes, heard went down sizzingly i think was word. Also word of even some ska getting a airing as Barry Norman would say "and why not" Seems Pete Coulson has this room well sorted and place was kicking all the nite Carry on and this broom cupboard will need a extension
Overall - enjoyable nite, some top sounds , lot of laughs ,hours of fun!

Whew! I bought this recording without knowing much about Ernie and Eddie and without being familiar with the records. The fact that it was on the excellent Kent label meant that it wasn't too much of a risk.
Speculation turned to joy as great song after great song blew out the cobwebs in my hi-fi. I bought it thinking that there might be one or two gems, but it is packed with must-have soul songs. There is not one bad recording on this CD. I questioned the wisdom of putting on a cover version of "Tell it like it is", but it is a different song in the hands of these two experts.

Marc F from Germany recently travelled across seven seas to the Hideaway, and going by what he wrote had a right old time.
Here's his view on the nite and what he dished out.
The Hideaway was great, the people involved even better, namingly Mike Warburton, Neil Henderson and of course Paul Welsby.
Also it was great to meet Lee Miller for the first time in person (cheers mate!).
Lots of understanding, open-minded and knowing soul fans! I hardly can think of one recent night that I enjoyed as much as this! Brilliant!
The "record talking" was brilliant, the "record trading" even better!
The venue is a sheer joy to look at and to dance in, the music from all the dj`s there is just that right mixture of R&B classics (and I mean R&B in the first meaning of the word), 6t`s rare soul gems, a bit of popcorn a bit of blue beat and that added extra little something called magic. All dj´s including Neil, Paul and Mike and as guest dj alongside myself Andre Minta played blinding sets. Paul for example played two blinding one-offs...
It was a brill night! Personally, I was overwhelmed by the warmth I was welcomed with by everyone and by the appreciation they gave the stuff I played. I nearly had to show and tell the details of every second 45 I played, which is good because it shows the interest of the people, but can put you into deep trouble when you have to deejay in-between and are using the microphone as a German native in England
I think they had like 100 + thru the doors, which is not bad bearing in mind all the other events all over the country and especially in the midlands.
If they let me (which they already said they would like to) I am sure to travel again to the rainy city in a not so far future. Here is what I played:
First set 11pm till 11.30pm

News of latest hot release from Kent!!! Shrine II (CDKEND 190) Amazing quality that means you can hear every bit of the over-produced (!) tracks...Id never noticed all the Ondioline (early synth) work deep in the layers of sound before...and I was particularly shocked to hear it was a keyboard and not strings within the instrumental break of RayPs "This time"....I really must get my hearing tested (no jokes about my musical taste!). Relieved to find both Bobby Reed unissued tracks, "Baby dont leave me" and "Caledonia brown" on there which are faaaaaaaaaaar too good just to have been left on the tapes........that DC Blossoms unissued, "This is your last chance" is also mighty fine.....great bass work in it...hats off to whoever did the transfers. The track that keeps getting a rewind though is the Counts "Peaches baby".......sounds so clear.....pure adrenaline-rush good ole NS and a fantastic allnighter sound. A person recently had problems on a northern list called advanced northern soul list. Due to the inability of the moderator to sort things and advise the member, the member then thought his account had been hacked. He then decided to post to 700+ soul fans an accusation of wrong doing by 2 sites which he assumed must be the cause through flawed logic. The Soul Talk list moderators managed to sort this members problems out, once they knew the symptoms by explaing and demostrating that his problem was an actual fault with the list providers, not a result of any hacking. The person then posted the 700+ soul fans a unreserved apoligy for his statement. against those sites As appears his accusations were a result of genuine mistake and the thought that he must pass on info fast, we have accepted this apoligy and as far as we are concerned is the end of this matter. The info about this fault was orignally posted on Topica Support List approx 4 months ago. and was immediately posted on the main soul lists. The moderator/s of the advanced (sic) northern soul list. appears unable to carry out simple tasks such as collecting news informing and advising members, these faults led this member to post untrue and unfounded allegations to over 700+ mail boxes. Along with the fact that this list is infamous through out the soul world for many wrong doings, abuse, lies and more. We highly recommend all soul fans to give it a wide bearth and look elsewhere.

11th anniversary last nite and a most enjoyable time Sounds wise guests did good job Bob Hinsley, Carl Willingham, Kev Murphy,Ginger and Simon being the advertised guests , though sure Robbo was on,yeah was, Hit read more to read rest Regs included Mark Morgan and Little Scotty finished the nite.Sounds wise - was toss up between Carl W and Bob h for me for most enjoyable with other mains hitting the spot fairly regular Upstairs - Whats going on, had heard mention a fair few times recently round home way, with a few giving it cant wait, later while downstairs could hear this thumping beat coming thru roof. all way into main hall. Workmen in? Up I went, and bit of a double take place was jumping, 20/30 oddin there thumping 2k+ beat and a well good feel, hats off to Paul Baldwin, he has certainly got that room jumping, no sign of those sound the same 70s lp tracks, that were boring back then, never mind now , but a room full of up and at them thumping beats with soulfull icing. Fair bits of news, rumours and so on going round, some can say , some can hint, some will blow your socks off later on when goes firm, interesting dodgy one someone getting sued for using video clips of a certain artist ? Apparently artist was told not used, but seems was used, cue legal thing. (Of course it is as said a dodgy rumour but as interesting and maybe someone can confirm/deny). Some cracking news that unfortunatly cant say as planning in progress. Watch out Very big BUZZ on next weeks Lowton - and advance warning of order Terry Davis, Ginger, Ian C, Carl Willingham, Rob Thomas, Andy Rix finishing nite (of course all very non-offical and more than likely a few mistakes!) Know many DMSC from round here are looking forward to this one and going make most of extra chance scoring some extra monkey. With monkey on week after .......double monkey thatll keep things going for a while. Then with a choice of Halifax or Broughton next day for another dose of quality , its yet another fun packed weekend for those who like their northern as it should be Crowd wise fair sized crowd there and good atmosphere, 11th annivesary , pin annivesary badge given out, Very Odd bits - no details of exclusive plays, covers, one offs, either but just a look at the undercurrent stuff for a different viewpoint or as less brain taxing as cocetration is wondering, whats the Carl W sound with the "surf city" chorus, almost the same if not identical, surf city here we come, cue beachboys karoke time. Gale Adams 82 version of Baby I need your lovin, and floor filled and even get a round of applause, been popular round North Wales Coast last few months and think every time heard it always seems to get clapped. Hopefully as said before will put Clarence Carter finally to bed, (though someone just had to play it later didnt they as if to say no chance spade) can get both 45/12 cheap at moment, was passed on to check rest of the Clarence Carter "mind" lp as supposed to be well err..dirty -how many cups of tea. Pretty Girl Dressed In Brown seems to get played at every event go to recently, and value seems to be rising correspondingly, Some still playing that Terry Wogan spin and was informed Sarah Kennedy gives it a going over as well, surely passed its sell by date by now, radio 2 ? tune in, nah never , now that is admitting defeat and next it be the slippers, cup of coccoa thing while listening to the wireless. Interesting question when should a record get dropped.nowadays, though person maybe not to ask that question was Little Scotty who finished the nite with the majority of the usual stuff you usually hear from him, no suprises in last hour.Will just say £3 for 20 , play what he wants Overall a very enjoyable nite, had a laugh, good catch up, mix of sounds,Some top dog, some not my cup of tea, but think defintely a case of something for everyone. Room at the top was well kicking and know the Llandudno lot enjoyed it First weekend of the month out of the way and feel like dogsh*t roll on Lowton
