About The Event

Friday June 14th 2019 sees the next event at the ‘Spirit of Lowton’ night at the superb Culcheth Sports Club, a brilliant venue and an almost mini-version of the original Lowton main room, not only a great venue to recall nights at Lowton but a top place to hear the music we love! So, if you fancy hearing great records along with something a little bit different, and if you want a proper ‘soul’ night (as opposed to just a ‘social’ night with the music policy that tends to accompany such events) then Culcheth could be the venue for you.

We are pleased to announce that our main room guests on June 14 are the GRUMPY duo PHIL THRELFALL and JOAN LIVESEY, so expect some TOP QUALITY TUNAGE!

Joining Phil and Joan on the night will be Culcheth Residents KEV MURPHY, BOB HINSLEY and BAZ MALEADY

ROOM 2 will be a bit different for this Special Night and will feature DAB OF SOUL originator, DAVE LUCAS, SOUL ON THE EDGE and MECCA Affectionado JOHN TOWNEND and Man About Town and 'WRONG CROWD' regular SIMON INGHAM, with a mix of Mid-Pace, to Mecca to Modern but all simply Soulful

‘The Spirit of Lowton’ - Culcheth Continues Where Lowton Left Off

Staying true to the reputation Lowton built up over 21 years, the focus remains on rarer and underplayed records. There will be records you know and love along with the rare, less frequently played oldies (all on original vinyl…no boots here) but we’re really hoping that there will be records on any given evening that will be new to you and that hopefully, you’ll enjoy.

The ethos at Culcheth is simple:
• To feature an evening of great soul records
• To select these records with the emphasis on quality
• To play original vinyl only
• To bring you quality guest DJs

We hope that the policy at Culcheth will provide the catalyst for a thoroughly enjoyable evening.

Culcheth Sports Club – The Venue

Culcheth Sports Club itself seems ideally suited for this kind of event. It has a good-sized main room with wall to wall maple dancefloor and excellent accustics, a second room, this is currently the Modern Room, with its own bar and excellent sound system and again with wall to wall, wooden dancefloor and a great ambiance and then there’s a separate chill-out/lounge area again with its own bar area.

Moving Forward

A change of venue after the closure of the iconic Lowton Civic Hall, was always going to be difficult but finding Culcheth Sports Club was a true stroke of luck, when you walk in there, you’ll know why, it’s a true ‘home-from-home’ when you remember Lowton, but dare I say it; better.
The combination of venue, music policy and two hand-picked guests in the main room per event seems to be proving popular. This year started in February at the Anniversary night, with the ever-popular Carl and Maria Willingham; Ted Massey, Soul Sam and Ginger Taylor are already booked to appear, with other great rare soul guest DJ’s, along with resident DJ’s in rotation including Lowton original Kev Murphy, Bob Hinsley, Ian Cunliffe, Robbo, Les Harrison and Simon Ingham lined up for the now bi-monthly nights, running this year in June, August, October and December

Modern Soul at Culcheth

Modern Soul was a logical choice for the second room at Culcheth. The room itself with a wall to wall wooden dancefloor, a low ceiling, its own bar and a quality sound system made it ideal for a more modern vibe. Anchored by the ‘Soul on the Edge’ team of Jem Booth and John Townend, together with regular guest Chris Box and other guests including Soul Sam, Steve Plumb and Steve Woomble, have quickly made this room a must visit venue to hear the latest modern soul 45’s coming out in the USA and UK, as well as a great and varied selection of modern soul classics from local clubs of the past like Newton Cricket Club, Cassinellis, Parkers, the Carlton, Lowton Modern Room, TSOP Prestwich and more recently, So Soulful 70’s, The Orwell, to name but a few.

Thoroughly enjoyed Friday night at Culcheth; not a surprise, although making a debut in the back room with no 'Northern' on the menu was a new challenge (thanks to John & Dave for putting up with me).

The main room was buzzing every time I popped in which was great to see with so many other venues running including the Blackpool weekender so well done to all involved, especially the Culcheth faithful

Bring on the next instalment.

Well that was a great night, good go see so many off the old lowton crowd in attendance, main hall was non stop tune after tune and busy dance floor. Caught Simon Inghams set in the other room and even though a few issues with equitement but still pulled it off. Back in the main hall thought Phil T was on top form as per usual. Great night and will be back for the next one.

Well done Baz and all involved.

First Friday out since can remember.  Did we make right choice . Had to leave just before 12 as me lass felt unwell . What a bag of absolute gems.  Wanted to dance near every record . Sound system played without a hitch . Mic bit high initially soon sorted  . Got home wanted to go straight back . Was that good .

Great to catch up with Jon Jo not seen him over a year due to ill health.

Hard to pick Best Hour . Baz Maleedy Bob Hinsley played stonking Soul . Grumpy Soul Duo

Joan Livesey and Phil Threlfall my pick of the night . Played brilliant music for two hours .

Went home sweaty and satisfied.

Great night .

Thanks all involved .

Response from the promoter:

Sooo pleased to know you enjoyed last night! Toyed with the idea of cancelling the event due to the major competition up the road but realised that there was a group of people out there who were willing to support a night playing the kind of music we love. Got to agree Phil and Joan were SUPERB and I'd like to say BIG THANKS to them and their choice in music, it was absolutely spot on...in fact, both rooms were musically spot on for me and the 'Spirit of Lowton' was definitely in evidence last night...

Hope 'the misses' is feeling better soon, and hope Culcheth is now officially on your Friday night, planner 😉

Thanks for your kind words
