About The Event

The Ashton Ukrainian club has gone from strength to strength following the re-launch in 2021 and a move to Saturday night. For 2024 we're looking to continue delivery quality rare and underplayed soul from the residents and ever growing list of outstanding guests.

Speaking of ‘Rare & Underplayed Soul’ we use that phrase to capture what Ashton tries to deliver musically, which is worth expanding upon.

Mainly it's an attempt to move away from the standard music policy strap lines we’re all so used to seeing like; Northern, 60s & 70s, Crossover, Modern, across the board etc. etc. whilst genuinely trying to capture an ethos. The words ‘rare’ and ‘underplayed’ are intended to apply both in their own right and together, it certainly isn't supposed to be limited rare records that are also underplayed……we should have added quality in there too LOL.

In a nutshell you will hear all three combinations of the phrase on any given night at the Ukrainian Club; ‘Rare’ (but not for rarities sake) ‘Underplayed’ (but not because they’re not good enough) and of course ‘Rare & Underplayed’ but, all with one eye on the dancefloor.

We don’t have a music ‘policy’, all our residents & guests are free to express themselves as they wish, which we believe adds to the magic. So simply expect a great night of quality soul music if you ever get the chance to join us at our friendly little club.

Up and at 'em on Fathers Day !! Just recovering from a sensational night at Ashton Ukrainian Club, on a real busy night on the soul calendar. People turned out in droves last night and as always a good few first timers soaking up that special atmosphere at this great little club!!

Phil Dunn did a solid opening set, with a few classics thrown in, Billy Prophet, still sounds so good!! Up stepped William Mailey and boy did he nail it, Clarence Hill, The Trends "dig the blues" stand out tracks for me, a real mixed bag, hats off sir, great set!!

Chris Penn was up next and confided he was feeling a tad nervous, he needn't have worried, some real stunners, Hytones "you don't even know my name" lit the dance floor up!!

My Old mate Derek Pearson followed and for me personally played the spot of the night!! Carressors, Masqueraders "how" Joseph Moore and how good did The Impressions "you ought to be in heaven" sound!! As Dee Pee said, they don't have to cost a fortune, all about quality soul music!!!

Roger Banks followed opening with two Volt classics Margie Joseph and Paul Thompson WOW!! Mixed in with some early sixties classics Sylvia Shemwell, Clydie King "only the guilty cry" loved it""

The ever dependable Chris Churm AKA "the finisher" opening with two Detroit Heavyweights Judy Freeman "hold on" Ivy Jo" I can feel the pain" set the tone and yet again people dancing to the very last drop!!

Personal thanks from me Natalie Nicholls for my Gucci record Centres, love them and Alan Jenkins, two of the scene's finest and non too shabby DJs!!

Great to see some of the old Wilton Crowd over!! Once again we can't thank our Loyal Regulars and First Timers enough, you make it all worthwhile. Check a short snippet video and classic Dee Pee comment " I think it's a real one lol

We're back Saturday July 20th another great line up, including Karl Chalky White, Ted Massey and Chris Anderton. Keep your eye on the soul-source events page and my Thursday Ramblings on Facebook for more details, as we near the time !!!

Another Brilliant night at my favourite place. It has that unique combination of fabulous music, great people and a venue that’s just right. It creates that feel good vibe that lasts all evening. And sends you home with a big smile on your face.

The night opened with Phil Dunn who got things moving with some classic tracks.

Debutante Billy Mailey energised the dance floor with some big sounds: Big Frank and Essences and Rudy Love. And mixing things up nicely with Drizabone.

Chris Penn followed, with some top tunes: Jimmy Bo Horne, Cleveland Robinson, Nat Hall et al.

Derek Pearson was up next, stand out dancer for me Lenny Curtis. He concluded a brilliant set with First Choice “This is the House” not your usual Ashton fare, not danced to it for 40 years, but loved it.

Roger Banks offered up a quality and varied set, that featured the best of Detroit and Memphis and everything in between.

Chris Churm bringing the evening to a close with Chuck Jackson’s “What’s with this Loneliness”.

Big thanks to all the DJs and organisers for making another memorable night.

another great night at my fave night out.  Proper old school crowd with an open ear who want something different and something the Djs aren't afraid to deliver as was the case Saturday night.  Belting sets from all the Djs, well done to all concerned.
