On a warm summers day like today I like to play The Temptations "Hey Girl (I Like Your Style)" (the version with the sax solo at the end). Richard Street's on the lead vocals.

So right now I would nominate that one, however, tomorrow it could well be something else!

Tops - 'Do What You Gotta Do' and definitely Smokey - 'Tracks of my Tears'.

There are so many classic Motown singles it's hard to choose but right now this would be the all the time top 10 Motown singles

1. Isley Brothers - This Old Heart of Mine - quite possibly one of the greatest singles in the history of music

2. Jimmy Ruffin - He Who Picks a Rose

3. The Elgins - Stay In My Lonely Arms

4. The Four Tops - I Can't Help Myself

5. Martha Reeves and the Vandellas - Jimmy Mack

6. Stevie Wonder - A Place In The Sun

7. Boyz II Men - End of the Road

8. The Temptations - Ain't Too Proud to Beg

9. The Supremes - You Can't Hurry Love

10. Jackson 5 - I'll Be There

Too many.... hard to narrow down...

Tammi Terell - This Old Heart Of Mine (beats the isleys for me sorry!)

Elgins - HEAVEN MUST HAVE SENT YOU (SERIOUSSSSSSSS)

plus these...

Originals - Suspicion

Marvin Gaye - Little Darlin' I Need You

Jr Walker - I Ain't Going Nowhere

Isleys - Greetings (This Is Uncle Sam)

Isleys - I Hear A Symphony

Isleys - When The Love Is Gone

Temps - The Way You Do The Things You Do

Temps - Ain't Too Proud To Beg

Contours - Misunderstanding

Marvellettes - My Baby Must Be A Magician

David Ruffin - Walk Away From Love

No One Could Love You More - Gladys Knight.

Just a Little Misunderstanding - The Contours.

Don't anybody disagree coz you're wrong.

Don't like either of those!

Too many to choose from but Shotgun Jnr Walker will always be special as the first 45 I can remember being bought for me as a kid. Though Smokey's lyrics are always special too. Bob Dylan called him America's greatest living poet and you can't say fairer than that.

Some of Smokeys lyrics make you just cringe with embarassment, I dunno about greatest living poet; I'm holding you so tight, you know you could have been a handle...my smile is just a frown turned upside down....

Not released but one of the greatest Motown tunes ever has got to be Suspicion. No Doubt about it.

Kev

Top 5, definitely.

I'd keep numbers 1 and 4...number 7 I would set fire to

Thats my number 1 as well

only twenty nine weeks to xmas.

stevie wonder---thats what xmas means to me.

Why don't you lika all The Psychadelic Soul stuff from the

late 60's and early 70's and do you reckon this is the time

when Northern was turning into Funk? wink.gif

I like the Motown sound, after 67, it was almost gone completely, too diverse, mainly because of the L.A. influences.

I'd keep numbers 1 and 4...number 7 I would set fire to

I knew you wouldn't like it, Pete, but "End Of the Road" is actually a good group record, but it's not representative of Motown. It doesn't sound like Motown, it just happens to be on the label.

I've got about two hundred "Best Motown Singles", depending on what mood I'm in. But I think if I was really pressed to pick just one, I'd have to narrow it down to either:

"I'll Always Love You" - The Spinners

or:

"I Guess I'll Always Love You" - Isley Brothers

...which, for me, will always epitomise what the real Motown Sound is all about...

Ben. M. Jackson/Five. Rat Soul.

RAT SOUL!!!!

pete why is the isleys version better than tammi's? id have to disagree there....
