What are your top ten RnB records that have crossed over to be Northern Soul floor fillers?

I guess mine are:

I Can't Please You - Jimmy Robins

I Can't Get Enough - Johnny Sayles

Sweeter Than The Day Before - The Valentinos

What Good Am I - Mickey Champion

Sippin' Sorrow - Pearl Woods

My Baby Likes To Boogaloo - Don Gardner

If You Don't Come - Patience Valentine

The Champion - Willie Mitchell

It's Your Voodoo Working - Charles Sheffield

I'm A Big Man - Big Daddy Rogers

How much change would I get from £1000 for that little lot?

Enthusiastic mate!

They don't seem to have pre-conceived ideas...they just get on and dance to good tunes, whether they know them or not.

Also played Black Nasty and Clean Up the Ghetto...seemed to like them as well!

(Baz referred to it as "that sort of ...STUFF"   whistling.gif )

Dave

Ive got 5 copys of "Clean up the ghetto" all difforent ie;ohio ,phili ,washington ,all got diff`intro`s,like "i was in ohio the other day",if you know what i mean?have seen a few other places as well, about another 15,i bet they made a promo for every state.......more usless stuff from me then

Dancing  Instead of telling potential buyers it's "R&B" etc, you could demonstrate to them what sort of dance you can do to each record...  whistling.gif

Now that is an interesting concept

Better when you can hear it,5 differant ways dont ya think,is this not another big tune played in 8ts,to be re-ashed by somebody els,and did well in the charts.?

Yes just that Dave..I dance to records that different people put in all kinds of different boxes...Some would describe a record as "a deep soul,RnB /crossoverl mid-paced ballad with doo wop style vocals, bad arsed two step funk break to die for...name that tune whistling.gif:ohmy:

The point i made was that i like to hear all styles in the same room on the same night..Sorry and don't mean to stray from topic...

Precisely

Rockmasters whistling.gif , do me a favour!,....you seem a bit confused!

It's SOUL.

I really do wonder sometimes if people on this forum listen to the same record(s) as I do  The above track is laden with so much harmony and group dynamics that it could easily be (and too a larger extent is) doo-wop and I think your ignorance of this fact shows how blinkered and unreasonably precious you guys are - The phrase wood for the trees mean anything ??

cos the discussion was about the names of genres. steve came back on and told us he was off topic a little and added his point. i agreed with his point.

steve was originally backing up bazbond with regards to saying 'fcuk those who pigeon hole it'. you agreed. i then said you are all missing the point of the thread.

:ohmy::ohmy::lol::P

Come on ETG, what about 9 more to get this back on thread! thumbsup.gif

Some fave r'n'b's didn't see mentioned above that over here play happily at northern do's:

Slick Chick - Vernon Harrell (Lescay)

Hully Gully Papa - Jasper Woods (VPM)

Somebody's always trying - King Size Taylor (Decca) i.e. not Ted Taylor

Barbara Trent - Heartbreak Hotel (Red Label)

Barbara Trent - A woman was made for a man (same label but way rarer)

Bobby Adams - Don't you feel it (Purdy)

Denita James - Wild Side (Flip)

And have been known to play a blue-eyed version of Just Can't Please You from Texas too..... (haven't risked the Spanish cover version yet but have it, thanks Edu!)

I really do wonder sometimes if people on this forum listen to the same record(s) as I do  :P The above track is laden with so much harmony and group dynamics that it could easily be (and too a larger extent is) doo-wop and I think your ignorance of this fact shows how blinkered and unreasonably precious you guys are - The phrase wood for the trees mean anything ??

link

ah now i see male group harmonies are not soul  ..cant see any trees let alone any woods

and i am shocked at the ammount of blatant flirting going on here  ..get a room mr bicknell for your group fingy thumbsup.gif

margie hendrix - one room paradise .....sits happily in both

ac reed - my babys been cheating

joe tex - i wanna be free

no steve did though baz mate. If you read it again i was referring to what steve said. steve admitted he read it wrong.

Shane

sorry my bad just re read it thumbsup.gif

Seem to remember these filling the floor at the Dome (that well known R'n'B playing venue thumbsup.gif )

Louie Palmer - Don't Ever Leave Me

Curly Moore - You Don't Mean It

Robert 'Red Top' Young - Your Future (not sure this out and out R'n'B though)

I didn't say The Champion was bollocks, I said your assumption that it could be classed as R&B is bollocks, and it is!

Cant be SOul pete it's an instrumental thumbsup.gif

Yes group harmonies are soul - very much - but the statement was in relation to the Rockmasters and evidence of doo-wop on the record

This is the typical soul source way , to take something out of context away from the thread in question and to invent a moral highground for yourself :P
