James Brown Godfather Of Soul, Well Is He?

Are you guys and gals fed up with the media telling you that James Brown is the godfather of soul?, what do you think, personaly psuedos know shit all about soul music so they say the first thing that comes into their thick heads, James had some nice soulful tunes in the early days and a couple in the 70s but I would draw the line between funk and mainstream soul, :wicked:

You're just sounding obtuse Dan. Northern Soul's always been based on Song not artist. Many of the top Northern sounds are one hit wonders. Most recorded no more than a dozen songs during their whole career (I know there are exceptions). I'm not making the argument for you, you're ignoring the  fact that James Brown's recorded more quality records (let alone just good ones), than most  artists revered on the Northern scene, have even laid down to tape. Its got nothing to do with all the ones you dont like (Unless you're Perspective on life is negative or stupid). How many times have people tracked down artists to turn up copies of some gem, Only to be told I've not got any now - but listen to my latest recordings, which are way off the mark? 

James Brown is not everyone's cup of tea, this I understand. However, I bet most people like at least a few. Prisoner of Love for example is about as soulful as a song gets.

i don't think i'm being obtuse simon. just saying that if all you can say about the guy is that he's made a dozen dood recordings in a career which has seen hundreds, his hit ratio (even for a fan like yourself) isn't that high and leaves, as i've said all along, a lot of samey dross.

as for the line about northern being about songs rather than artists, i agree to an extent...you wouldn't call lee mckinney the godfather of soul cos he hasn't got the output or the influence (you would IMO say he was better than James Brown, but that's a different story).

i just don't agree that JB is all that good, that's all, and no amount of obfuscation by german djs with axes to grind will make me change my view.

but i'm really bored of this now as i'm sure you and everyone else is. i will leave it at this now (though feel free to continue yourself!)

Don`t even ask. The lowpoint of his career .. which lasted until recently. 1980 was when JB really started loosing his mind ... which would have been easier to accept if his music was good. Unfortunately, he lost touch with soul music that year as well... at least on his records. :thumbsup:
