it will be nice to see you and jan out and about dave...you are the mainstay of many of my you-tubesregards moldie

.

. Thanks, We're only too pleased to be part of the communal pictorial history that you're compiling on Youtube.

. Although it does remind me, due to all the fresher faces in the pictures, of how old I'm getting. huh.gif

.

. Anyway, when on this string you commented on whether you would get to hear oldies like Ski-ing in the snow - The Invitations, I presume that was Mick taking the micheal! rolleyes.gif

. I heard the story of how that play cleared the floor at Bisley. Which I think is rather sad. I can understand folk not liking it on the basis of musical preference, as it is skippy and dated in a way that doesn't transcend the eras like some other former big plays from Wigan. Yet I reckon it has definitely been tainted by the image of those long haired spotty herberts in star jumpers, prancing from side to side on Top of The Pops. Some even associate that and the original version by The Invitations as one and the same. What a cruel fate for a record that was once so well received. It deserved better and so did Paul McKay for giving it another airing.

.

.

. As for this coming Saturday night, Andy Hutchins' set the last time around went down really well with the locals I know who patronized Stafford 'Top of The World' in the early eighties. Quite a few of his plays I was reliably informed, were rarities and discoveries from that era. Matt from Trowbridge plays across the board and is always well received. One of his plays, I've had it - George Smith, never fails to move and lift my spirits.

. Enough has been said in past strings about the upbeat rare soul that the residents at Bournemouth Railway Club deliver in sizeable chunks. Although it has to be said that Jonah and Simon Preston did incorporate a few more oldies and classics during the last event in December to satisfy those within the crowd with more traditional/mainstream tastes in Northern Soul.

. The standard of music was invariably high in what turned out to be a memorable night of superb soul.

.

. What I really enjoy about The Railway Club is the last bonus hour we get between 2 & 3 a.m. For earlier doors, there are occasions when there isn't always enough space to dance to any play that just infectiously urges your feet to throw your body around. Yet come 2 o'clock, the numbers have thinned down to a core of revellers that just want to keep going.

. The congestion is gone and we're free to enjoy ourselves. This is when some of the best dance music is unleashed. Typical examples are Bobby Williams - I've only got myself to blame, Joe Tex - You better believe it, Ricardo Ray - Nitty Gritty and one that I've just tracked down on Refosoul, Luther Thomas - You'll stick to me.

. Not long before the end of the night in December, Simon Preston introduced a record he had played in Mr.M's at The Casino Club. Apparently he had filled in for Dave Evison on a couple of occasions. I was impressed and wished I hadn't been so exhausted as to not make the trek upto the decks to find out what it was.

. This is how it can be at The Railway Club. It's always full of surprises. . Dave Mortimore

.

. O.K. Tim & Bearsy. Point Taken! I would never recommend it. But the point I'm making is that it just goes to show how the scene is now less forgiving and more highbrow than it was then. Nobody of note, only some of the tourists would have ever liked Joe 90 or Hawaii 5-O. Yet the afore mentioned play (and I might add, Footsee before it's unsound credendials were realised) was well received. It soon dated or was discarded for obvious reasons. However, it's still part of the Casino's history. whistling.gif

.

. Now I'll crawl back into my cave and put my straight-jacket back on. huh.gif

Hi Dave hope to see you at the railway , got you a little present from the Potteries (not oatcakes)

the naughty forty = Stoke`s "boys"

Is that a southern shandy drinking puffta !lolwhistling

.

. I know of the forties. I mixed with them when I was a teenager and in my early twenties. Anyway, I thought most of them have long since been banned from games and I know that supporters, since 2000, have to have squeaky clean, fully approved mug-shot I.D.'s to attend away games.

.

. Jan and I have large extended families who have followed Stoke 'through thin & thin.' One of my younger brothers was telling me of how bad the weather has been and yet, although there is a recession on, this cold weather has been a positive boon to some local businesses. For instance, Burberry scarves, hats and hoodies have been flying off the shelves and they've completely sold out of fur-lined track suits and baseball caps.

. There were problems though with deliveries to supermarkets and as a consequence, quite alot of children had been suffering with dehydration. Most of the single mums were finding it difficult to force their kids to drink this unusual fluid called tap water. Thankfully, the crisis is now over, as they've managed to ship in emergency supplies of Sunny Delight. whistling

.

. Well Brian. Come this Saturday outside the ground, make sure you park your vehicle in a safe place. So that you can get down to Bournemouth Railway Club afterwards. As I've heard that Bongo Vans are quite popular on Merseyside.

A lot of crap played, but a lot of great tunes aswell, but you wouldnt know that , would youlaugh.gif

i couldnt possibly comment on a venue i never attended but as i was at such a young and tender age when the Casino closed i live the memory of it like i was there by 90% of todays djs laugh.gif

thats the advantage of being so new to the scene im not blinded by 1 venue or by any djs of the past cos its all new to me and dont care where it was first played etc cos its what and where its being played today that matters thumbup.gif

its such a shame i didnt know you all them years ago Tim when you left school and made the long old journey up to the Casino cos you could of wrote me a sick note for my teacher at infant school and i could of come with you biggrin.gif

looking forward to the Railway though its the first of many super duper Nights/nighters coming up this year thumbup.gif

For anyone who is having thoughts about attending this nite, you wont regret it, always a busy one , cheap entry, cheap drinks and for me, musically one of the best clubs, if not thee best on the south coast, over five years, theres been some incredible toons played at this venue:hatsoff2:

Gotta say this, Since ive moved down to the west country from Kent nearly 2 years ago i was wondering what soul would be on offer and after attending a few events my taste for proper Northern/Rare Soul was not being properly satisfied UNTIL i found The Railway Club and wow i needed look no further and be to dispondent anymore as it had everything i need from such a night, Cheap entry, cheap beer and quality music from promoters/djs that dont linger in the past and bow to the pressure of turning this into another overplayed oldies fest (thankfully) and have taste very much in agreement with my taste so if you want a night of quality tunes great atmosphere good dance floor etc etc etc then get your arse to the Railway Club cos you wont be dissapointed (unless you like you tunes overplayed and on every CD in tesco)

The Uni (Bournemouth) and The Crown (Southampton) are 2 events also defo worth checking out too thumbsup.gif

.

. As you know, I am rather fond of the simple pleasures in life, such as 'Breathing.' . So in retrospect Brian, my last tongue in cheek reply describing some of the characteristics of some folk up north, was a little harsh. :shhh:

. The people of The Potteries are generally like their football team, down to earth, honest and hard working. They have a good sense of humour and don't take themselves too seriously, which is one of the things I do miss.

. Anyway, if Benitez doesn't get sacked before Saturday, I reckon Stoke have a real chance of getting a result. I do believe the conditions are going to be wet and windy. So, good luck and take care on the journey down. A night out on the south coast wouldn't be quite the same without you around.

. I have one question though. With the all the travelling around you do in that Bongo Van of yours, and all the other places you've lived in over the years. Do you have some gypsy blood in you?

. Looking forward to seeing you and the rest of the friendly crowd. Dave & Jan
