Like many I've always strived to reach out to those who created the music we hold so dear.

The incentive has not just been about the search for elusive 45s but also to try and gather information about those individuals and their story.

I've just come off the phone to a very bemused Margaret Little, in Detroit, who for the first time has been told that her recordings of 'Love finds a way' & 'I need some loving' escaped beyond the Detroit city limits to be appreciated by others.

It was sad to hear that Margaret has never owned a copy of the 45, barely remembered the former and had no memory of the latter. She was lost for words when I played her poor quality recordings of them.

She said her memory is not the best having suffered a small stroke a few years ago but recalls being taken by Gene, surname forgotten, to Motown for an audition. She was rejected as not being what they were looking for compounded by the fact that she was "a little plain" in the looks department. Gene wanted to record her so went over to see Popcorn and a deal was done. The 45 was cut, Gene kept the stock, she never received a copy, never heard it played so decided it wasn't her time and moved on.

I wasn't really prepared for my conversation so need to call her back to get a better story. She is going to talk to her sister to try and add some more bits to the jigsaw. I'll share what I discover.

I'd at least like to be able to send her a top quality recording of the tracks and maybe scans of the labels. She'd like to be able to share the dream she once had with her family. So ... if any of the current owners want to help out then please drop me a line .. AndyRix@aol.com

Thanks

Andy

Not sure who owned the publishing on Margaret's track, But all Popcorn's other material was either, jointly with Ollie McLaughlin's publishing company or his own, which the family now hold the paper work on, although there is some dispute over this due to a deal he did, just before he died, and I haven't heard from the family for somewhile.

would it be a presumption dave, that a dispute may be because his( popcorn's ) estate includes his musical works, thus his family are saying that they should have any say in any dealings, comcluded or not?, or was that what he was trying to secure, so his family got some long overdue remuneration upon his death?

p.s. i still love des parker's story about when him & adey picked the tune up after recieving a pile of tunes from their "resident ghetto trawler". i think it was 2003 something like that. they played it to john anderson...he didnt know it but said they'd get a grand for it,...next thing soul sam flashed a 7k wad at them and before you know it,it got its premier at yours and my favourite venue....the manor. i promptly ran up the "last all-nighter" playlist and dave welding gave me a tug, suggesting i not mention the identity. next time round sam played it at the ritz " rarest of the rare" mayday bank holiday all-nighter and it rammed the floor.....needless to say i got a pic of a very "cheshire cat" sam with his prize posession...the next pic was mick .h's aqquisition a while later...2 out of 3.....wonder if there's a chance of a unique pictorial prile of aces?

SO......another margaret little turns up this morning.......soundfile attatched, not too clever with a resonent click but i would imagine that on a big soundsystem it simply wouldnt matter a fig...and offers are wanted...can someone clarify at present, including this,...how many copies are now in the pipeline?

In Sales.Mr Blue - Brad Hales.

in hindsight, a picture sleeve with some liner notes would probably have sold out the legit reissue, dont know how many dealers actually took on stock, but cant be too many if it was only a limited run as suggested...so in time will these become collectable in the absense of owning a genuine copy?, i think i remember listening to it ( the reissue ) and the sound quality seemed all right. hope andy gets to finish his piece and posts it up here on this thread and a picture of the lady would complete the story thus far.
