The debate on the Javells post regarding black NORTHERN soul v white NORTHERN soul really got me thinking, and relating the differing views to my 27 years on the scene. I like to think that NORTHERN soul music is as diverse as the people who listen to it and buy the music .

I thought that the previous thread of mine would have run its course, but it seems quite a few of us are happy to keep the chat on this subject going, so here I am again - complete with amendments.

Here's my list of blue-eyed NORTHERN soul faves - obviously it will always be far from complete, as there is so much out there, but these for me are the more outstanding ones:

THE MARTELLS: Where Can My Baby Be

THE DEADBEATS: No Second Chance

THE MODS: Dry My Eyes

BOBBY PARIS: I Walked Away

GARY SOL'E: Holdin' On

TONY COLTON: I Stand Accused

MARK LOYD: When I'm Gonna Find Her

LYNNE RANDELL: Stranger In My Arms

B J THOMAS & THE TRIUMPHS: Keep It Up

THE BUCK ROGERS MOVEMENT: Take It From Me Girl

JOANNIE SOMMERS: Don't Pity Me

ROCK CANDY / CONTEMPLATIONS: Alone With No Love (I'm assuming it's white)

NICKY JAMES: So Glad We Made It

STEVE ALDO: YOu're Absolutely Right

THE SEVEN SOULS: I Still Love You (bearing in mind the 50-50 mix of black and white in the group)

THE TEMPESTS: Just about anything they've committed to vinyl (and yes, I know Hazell Martin is a black singer!)

Be interested to get a cross-section of views on the above, and also to hear what your fave blue-eyed NORTHERN soul tunes are. Would also be nice to hear some interesting stories behind the records, if anyone has them.

PS: Anyone posting on here with the sole intention of being obstructive, DO ONE NOW. YOU ARE NOT WELCOME HERE.

  • IMHO the finest example of blue eyed soul is Those Lonely nights by the Soul Communicaters on Fee Bee, with Chuck Corby as lead singer.....Stunning record, and oh so Soulful

Margo & The Marvettes " When Love Slips Away "

My apologies if it has been mentioned before .

Lovely! :)

How can this inferior version trump Dee Dee Warwicks sublime original??

Has Len Barry been mentioned yet? A true ns hero.

What about April Stevens, Jimmy Seals, John Andrews, Frankie & Johnny, Sharon Soul??

Good call.......

I'm a fan of Susan Rafey. Hurt So Bad and I Can't Say are stand outs by her.

Can't get Refosoul to work for some reason... :)

Also The Underdogs version of Love's Gone Bad. I quite like a bit of garage. :)

That is a fantastic version, I've actually got this, one of the few originals I actually bothered to keep cos I knew it wasn't available on a pressing.

That Judy Hughes record is terrible but thanks for putting the clip up, I'd never seen it before, I thought it was just a rumour!

looks like a couple of peoples minds have gone blank

Wow Pete, i'm shocked !!!!! been listening to Beverly Ann for 30 odd years and never realised she was white

No problem.

I wish Tony Smith would come round to your way of thinking and sell me his copy for a snip, instead of the grand + this goes for. sad.gif

Really pleased to see how the thread is going - lots of interesting clips which I'm looking forward to listening to in my lunch hour, or when I get home later.

Keep it going!

Im not fussed either way as long as long as it sounds good. Nobody seems to knock a bit of Mitch Ryder.

Jimmy McFarland - Lonely lover

Don Ray - Born a loser

Vicki baines - Country girl (I suspect)

doni burdick - i have faith in you

wayne cochran - i'm in trouble

I'm guessing Beverley Ann is white. You've got your mind.... and He's Coming Home, on the right night, can usually get me dancing. When I first started going to nights around the Gloucester area, he's Coming Home was a sure bet to get a full dancefloor for any DJ.

Maybe wouldnt get the same reaction, outside of a Sunday evening at a weekender?

Definately white, she is in fact Breverly Bremmers who sang "get smart girl" on Scepter, she's also on Facebook and happy to answer "friend" requests and have the odd chat!

alan davids early recordings on parlaphone...............blue aces , all i want on decca.. [an irish show band] but brill.................and from paul ortiz , a latino blue eyed sounding beautiful track . "tender love " on refo and you tube i think .a currant favourite of mine.. ....... suzy cope.........a british 60s girl singer..........loads isnt there ??? ..........i note jim g's list above could contain many an early wigan play list  .ezzie .....

The clip of Judy Hughes on Shivaree is absolutely awesome! I didn't know about it either, but I have just been pleasantly gobsmacked!

And she's quite a cutie!

PS - The Contessas is also brilliant! Can't believe it's only a £20something record - sounds like it should be worth at least five times that amount!

brilliant record, also another great record called peace pipe.

Yep - if it's the instrumental track you're talking about Gary, it's by Pal & The Prophets on Jamie.

I assume it's the same Pal (Rakes) & The Prophets who did "Can't Deny The Hurt" - is that right?

Buckinghams - dont you care

AND THIS ONE BY THEM TOO

BRI

the mistake made here is.........they are called blue eyed northern just because someone played em out at some point (apart from danny wagner who is a soul singer )...........the rest are toe curling pop tunes one and all..........surely the passage of time from your younger days might just tell you this?.......no place for em !!!!! tezza
