Now small Record Shops are a thing of the past, In the area that I live West Herts there used to be loads of Record Shops within a 15 mile Radius F.L.Moores in Dunstable, Leighton Buzzard, Luton & Past & Present in Watford, Sadly most of them have gone but Past & Present is still around, Now in Hatfield Road North Watford WD24 4DB, They sell all the up to date CD releases @ competative prices, Now this shop has Piles & Piles of Vinyl 7" & 12" spanning the last 50 years or so, Years back Mick Boland used to work here & records like Panic & Tough Girl to name but a few came out of this shop & exposed to the Northern Scene, The best thing about this shop now is John who runs the shop has 2 Stereos out the back so you can play the things you don't know !!!! I wouldn't mind betting there are a few Gems hidden in this shop, There is a lot of stuff that is sorted but there are a lot that are misfiled, John is still buying in Collections & there are piles & piles in here, If you have the time this is the place 01923 352765

good thread jon

i miss those old record shops.

true story, i used to frequent rebel records in tamworth, run by a balding brummie with loads of rockabilly posters and purple vinyle 12in copies of fairies wear boots knocking around. racks of bootlegs, soul supply, casino classics, british motown reissues and some proper stuff, dunno where he would have got it from. hardly any soulies in tamworth so you had a free run, i got quite a few things from him (by which i mean £2-5 records for 50p to £1) out of there in the 80s, he didn't have much of a clue.

one day i picked out a mel britt, 50p (when it was obviously a lot more than that).

he told me it was a boot so i put it back.

a week later my mate paul downs bought it. turns out it was a proper one  .

it's now an indian restaurant which, with business sense like his, it bloody ought to be

Yea.... Alan Middleton's shop Shane.... admit was better when in Castle Market instead of some side street up West Street away from the city centre where it is now....

Also remember Record Collector in Broomhill having one or two nice tunes years ago.... best thing about this one was it was 100% vinyl in the middle of the student area and they weren't bothered about the soul boxes so it was pretty much free pickings.... it's still there but seems to be mainly CD's now like it was the last time I popped in for a look round about 7-8 years ago  ....

And can we foget Violet May's just off The Moor.... stood outside early Saturday mornings waiting for the delivery off their latest imports.... except that one time when they were delivered either the Friday night or early Saturday before it opened and some guy(s) nicked the box.... we had loads of copies of James Coit - Black Power (Phoof) on sale for weeks after that at the KGB and other local nights :D ....

There was a couple more as well that I can't recall the names of....

There were so many around in the '80s and they are missed.

I can remember there being a few in Camden Town (not sure if any of them are still there as I don't get up there these days) - I used to go in them all once a week (on a Saturday) missed them out one week only for a friend of mine to turn up later that day saying, "Look what I just bought for £3 in Camden!" and he's holding a Nat Hall on Loop (was just starting to get plays via Pat Brady at the time!).

Brighton used to have loads too (again, not sure if any of them are still there). Can remember turning up the Johnny Gilliam on Bo-Mar and the rare Cancer one on the same day! Don't think either were 'known' at the time. Can't remember what happened to 'em (think Ion had one off me, maybe both).

Happy days

I have 4 record shop's all within about a 3 mile radius of my house, I often pop in but they have people who send them lists for soul stuff so it rarely even makes the shop itself.

now this is what I mean, now John @ past & present can't be bothered to sort the records out, so it is down to the punters, as I said earlier there must be some Gems waiting in here !!!!

Paul For Music in Whitechapel, East London is now shut. It's got quite a few mentions in various rare soul books. I used to go in there all the time as a youngster but never picked up anything major myself but did get 1/2 a dozen copies of Messing With My Mind by Clarence Carter a few years back.

has become a problem here as well. seattle and the surrounding area has a few

decent record shops for any of you visiting our city.

Bop Street in the Ballard Neighborhood has boxes and boxes of soul 45s, some are

in horrible shape, but its worth a dig to find the odd gem. (recently bought manship)

I know he has recently unearthed 2 copys of the Pat Stanton "Little Love Affair" original

on Sepia recently, and the last one he sold went for $1100 (not worth it IMO) to

one of you visitors from across the pond.

Small record shop in Pike Place Market has boxes of 45s back behind the counter

that no one knows about and few ask for, but anyone is welcome to em if you ask

the cashier. Found a few there recently. (recently bought manship)

Jive Time (Fremont location) is great for LPs and good pricing. (doesnt care about the

collectors market where soul is concerned ... mostly a psych guy, so good prices!)

Then there are the multitude of second hand shops, vintage stores, thrift, etc.

Hey up Mark :D Had some great stuff out of Spin City over the years, recently got a copy of Willie Johnson - "What im going to do" in there, just gotta search & you always find stuff (should i be telling you all this?).

Alan Millington was never the outright owner though, he just liked folks to think he was. Always owned by Andy & Pauline. Spent many happy hours in there (& many pounds too!)

Gotta say though i think its far better at the new shop though, just politely refuse if Andy offers you a cuppa though!

Remember all those James Coit's turning up at the KGB.

As for the record collector at Broomhill, had some nice stuff outa there over the years. They still sell vinyl in the shop next door, really cheap as well. Got a Williams & Watson album outa there & the guy behind the counter said he had some more stuff on the same label, mostly early jazz stuff but found a Major Harris & a Billy butler album for a quid each!

Happy days indeed :D

I already know to look Martin :D .... just don't seem to get down there days....

Know what you mean about "outright owner".... was just that he always seemed to be there at one time so it was associated more with him....

Shop is better at new place.... just out of the way I think....

Catch up with you later :D ....

Suppose it is obvious that we (the Sheffield crowd) all know the same stores, have bought from them all, think we touched on Violet Mays before Mark on this forum......great memories. Hey Martin thought it was great when you featured Andy and Pauline in manifesto a while back, smashing couple, just a few weeks back i bought a copy of Black Stash on UK demo (i have the issue on Uk and USA) for £3 out of the "Straight Soul Boxes"..you can't turn that price down. What about the place on Division St that sells books and LP's, very strange but wonderful. Also remember that place opposite the Brewer on The Bridge early to mid 80's.forget it's name lot of Jamaican stuff but mixed in always a bit of soul.

Happy days..

Are you thinking of guiding star a reggae record shop which was on the wicker but later moved up spital hill ? He did have loads of all kind of soul records in.

Maybe, to be honest i can't for the life of me remember the name.....i seem to recall it had a long title right across the header of the shop.....seems a long time ago for my ravished mental state. :D

There is still an excellent Soul record shop/stall in the indoor market in Wood Street, Walthamstow, London, that goes under the title 'Captain Vinyl'. He is a bit pricey, but an good spot for pouring through boxes of american imports etc.

The owner is always happy to put records on for you and to suggest things to listen to - one of those places I am often frightened to go into as I end up spending way more than I intended.

The market is a bit of a hotbed with 4 or 5 record stalls in all, with another fair sized shop across the road.
