Your Best Year On The Scene?

Posted (edited)

Have to be 1985 for me I think. Was going to places like, Peterborough, Loughborough, Leicester, Keele,Trentham Gardens, Buzzard, 100 Club etc.

Remember Girl across the street being massive (that's Moses Smith btw, not Jeanette @ # 36 lol). Magnificent Men, Lovin's gone to my head. Hand clapping. Buying records from Rob Smith that had '1.50 worn' on them. Buying the Northern Soul Story Vol 1 - Soul Supply at a nighter before it had been released.

A fantastic and exciting time of discovery and wonderment for me and although I know more now and more sounds have been unearthed. I look back to 85' through rose tinted specs and fond memories ...

Perhaps I should rename this thread to a 'memorable year'.

Goes without saying there are good times ahead. But nothing wrong with remembering the good times that have already been imo.

The Principal?

Did say 'places like'. May have been later, not sure ...

I agree, just cause some don't wish to look back doesn't mean others can't.

Haven't really got a particular year but the mid 80's on were great, so many great venues and dj's with an ear and the balls to play new or underplayed records, unlike today

Same could be said for the 70's I guess, they were new and underplayed, well more like shifted on to the next one quickly :D

The long hot soulful summer of '76 takes some beating- Wigan mainly for me . Now you've got the upper hand , She'll come running back ,People thats why , Stronger than her love ,Pain in my heart , I can see him loving you , Send him back etc etc .Also last year of Wigan ,Searling on top form , and Minshull playing some brilliant oldies Some great freinds made like Mudd ,Tommo [ both r.i.p. ] plus Rob and Chris Marriott ,Rob Wigley , Chris Shaw , Dave Molloy etc Best ,Eddie

When you get to my age you say every day is the best one blush.gif You dont count in years. Dont think i could say what was the best year. My first nighter at Wigan in 75, My last nighter i went to at leicester. Thats 31 years but couldnt pick one that stands out,To many good times, good records.nice people Next year may be the best.

!972 to 1979 favourites pendulum, blackpool, cleethorpes, wigan, blue rooms, carolines,

&

1997 to now and onwards, orwell, hyde united, clethorpes weekender,

best years were probably 1973 to about 1978 but the last few years have been great as i think i have heard more new stuff than in the 70's.

Cheers Eddie. Great to put a year to some of those sounds. When they were getting plays etc.

I was a sunburnt 10 year old on Tenby beach, who knew not the ways of NS. blush.gif

Agree with Eddie Hubbard,76 & 81 would take some beating.

76

Wigan,St Ives,Cleethorpes at their peak.As Eddie says the records were comming thick & fast, also Gloria Jones on tour,a mixture of 60s rarities,70s new releases & obscure early 70s getting spins together in the same rooms (untill the big Mecca/Wigan dummy spitting competition!)

81

Mr Searling comes close to walking on water! The last months at The Casino were rather special-carried on after at Clifton Hall.

IMHO of course........ :shades:

Trying to work backwards on the years ... not easy when you're this age  I think it must have been 92/93 ... going to Droylsden/Queens Hall, Bradford/Hyde town hall ... some brilliant music introduced to me and some excellent friends who are still excellent friends introduced to me too :shades: Still love it as much now but unfortunately don't get out as much as I used to or would like to ... family committments blah blah blah

:PThis is the year you took a skinny kid with a mop of ginger hair under your wing & he never looked back blush.gif , i remember you & Tabs ( mick Tambling) buying a copy of "pain in my heart" in the bar at Wigan & i think you paid a fiver for it  i could`t belive a record could cost so much :D , it was my first year as a regular at the Casino & one i remember with fondness........ that feeling of being young & discovering a "scene" where you know you belong & want to learn EVERTHING about it.

Have to agree with the last years of the Casino being some of the best for music, Searling was pulling & blending new release & undiscovered stuff out of the hat like a magician.

Fab years...........

These days are just as good for me. i think if you love soul music, there all good years

=============

77 was great, probably cos I was still a young man. 98 also great, cos I was hearing so much stuff new to me, and of course as Karen and Janine said, the future cos it's still going strong :Pblush.gif

back end 1972 Bletzoe and The Torch who could wish for a better intoduction however if one year gave me the NS buzz it was 1975...walked out of the casino after hearing Hawii 50 after 2 years of awesome music and in conjunction with Dave Mindam starting the Peterborough all nighters at the Wirrina and spinning a few ta boot. Introducing Billy Butler on stage on late 75 was a dream come true.

happy days
