I have records with almost all these so-called "dances"

You need to get out more mate ;o)

Have you ever watched the US dancers dance to these records ? It's frighteningly bad, Have a look at Bobby Freeman, The Swim on You Tube, or the movie Hairspray, talk about taking the lyrics literally ! But as far as the Brits are concerned: The Okey Cokey takes some beating.

Just the other week at a venue the Dj played a request ,Lee Dorsey's Ride Your Pony, the girl who asked for it took to the floor and danced what I presume was The Pony, she was quickly joined by a guy from the other side of the dance floor, they had  the floor to themselves, I wouldn't say they didn't know each other but the they were not together at the event, they danced in almost perfect harmony and got a round of applause at the end.For me at any rate it was the first time I'd seen anyone do a recognised dance at a Northern night.

As for where the dances came from the late fifties onward I' d hazard a guess in some cases from the  performers themselves or dance groups when seen on Tv shows interpreting the lyrics.

did we name the Popeye waddle ?wonder who thought that up?

don covay title

I think we missed this.  "The Popeye" was a dance step based on how the Popeye character (E.C. Segar 1930s-'40s comic strip) moved in his movie cartoons.  The "Popeye Waddle" was a variation of that, based on just how he walked in the cartoons.  The first record I remember with "The Popeye" mentioned, was "Popeye" by Lamont Dozier on Anna Records, released in early 1961.  It was pulled, and re-pressed as "Benny The Skinny Man", due to a pending lawsuit by Segar's lawyers.  "The Popeye" was still around in 1962 and even 1963, after being given a boost by The Sherrys on their Philadelphia hit "Pop-Pop-Pop-Pie".  Later, More Pop-Eye songs came out, including "The Popeye Waddle".
