Got this from an acid jazz news letter....................

"Mod legend has it that Paul Weller wrote a Northern Soul stomper at the age of fifteen that only ever appeared on an impossibly rare demo recorded by The Jam before he discoverd Punk rock.

The song was real.

It was entitled Left Right & Centre.

Weller has given permission for this lost classic to be re-recorded by a collection of Face Mod musicians and a Northern Soul Star singer. It features ..

Steve Craddock on Guitar (Ocean Colour Scene, Paul Weller).

Richard Searle on Bass (Corduroy, WET DOG).

Dean Parish on vocals (Famous American Northern Soul singer).

Stephen Large on Keyboards (Lord Large, Glenn Tillbrooke ,The Ordinary Boys).

Produced by Andy Jones (Lord Large).

Acid Jazz Records are releasing it in June 2006"

The last couple of Acid Jazz soul 45s have been really good, as were the soulful tracks on the recent Andy Lewis album.

My money's on Mr Pillar to pull one out of the bag with this.

My money is also on a whole raft of neersayers to slag the backside out of it before they've even heard it. Which is fair enough, white writer, white singer, white producer - it's enough to give some of you lot apoplexy

uncle russ played it to me the other week on the phone

he has cut 3 trax (DP) with one being left right and centre and itll never be over for me + 1 more i think...

the LF &C is ok not as bad as some home made NS but not bad

apparently they have been playing this in the london clubs..

i loved the jam from day one and even stayed with him through the style council years (though by then was getting more into northern) but his voice has improved dramatically. though i always feel as though it's a bit of a pastiche, like he's singing how he thinks he should. still a british pop great though.

Ah, it's all coming back to me now.

Now I remember Richard telling me about it ages ago. Proximity to Holland does not help on occasions like these.

Must try and get a soundfile out of him. If obtained and cleared I'll stick it on here for a slagging.

Heard this very briefly on radio 2, janice long about 1.30 am in the Morning a couple of weeks back when travelling back from the Buzzard re-union. sounded very good and as with all "Northern" type tracks you're not quite sure where/if you have heard it before.

hope its a sucess for Dean/Paul.

Dunno, really can't be arsed with all this "modfather" bullshit that he's supposed to be but my son has Ocean Colour Scene album with a track called "All Up", which I think the band wrote after consulting with him, cracking instrumental really, but can't be bothered with all these wannabe soulmen

Nice one Coops. All the talk going on about this made me really want to hear it. Verdict, well it sounds pretty much as I expected. they're competantly done tracks, The Left , right... track sounds very dated in it's style though in terms of what people are generally into these days Northern wise, and the Timi Yuro is quite fast with a funkyish edge. I'm at a bit of a loss as to why they have been done really, apart from Paulweller and the Ocean Colour scene boys trying to get a bit of cred out of doing something "Northern" and working with an old Wigan hero. I always thought Weller had heard Northern before when he recorded that track (forgot the title) that sounded like he had just listened to the World Column "So is the sun", but those posh Ocean Colour Scene lads from Solihul..... I'm not so sure. Not bad tracks though and I certainly would rather hear them on radio 1or 2 than most of the other corporate blandness and Indie twoddle.

yeah, i pretty much agree jordi, not quite my cup of tea but not as offensive as the lavinian disco-beat-re-vamps on that hidious dvd set thing. the strange comercialism of northern soul? not sure if that's the title but something like it.

Top side ala Motown 1963/64.

Sounds great to me. Music is just music. Nothing more or less. It either works or it doesn't. Never understood the negative feeling towards respectful remakes or tasteful tailor-mades.

There's a couple of OCS songs with a bit of a Northern/Motown sound to them, one where they try a NS-style instrumental, forgotten the name ... don't know if they were into it particularly or just Weller's influence.

As for these tracks... The A side sounds to me like most modern attempts at a Motown sound-a-like, and the B, well, can't understand why they'd want to turn such a heartfelt song into that

Trans Global Unity Express I think it was called. Total rip off of So Is The Sun and they should have sued.

The Style Council did a really good 60's pastiche with Sold Bond In Your Heart.

As for this one, quite pleasant but only northern in the sense that Edwyn Collins' A Girl Like You is Northern.
