I was trying to get some info on this label, I have seen them but the net doesn't seem to have any info. Is there a discography ? Who owns(ed) it, etc. Any info welcome.

There aren'y any releases, just an advert saying that the label was starting up and that Sam Nesbit would be the first release - and one acetate or test pressing that Ady used to have.  I think.

I have one of the blank labels at home that DG gave us (sure other people have them too) - red and brown with the 444 design and 20s looking graphics around the top.

 

According to the story DG told us, the reason it didn't happen was that he and David Nathan had more or less agreed funding with an American businessman in New York. They were having a final sit down when DN popped out of the room, the guy turned to Dave and said 'you don't want to be involved with that Yid do you?' at which DG stood up, gave him a mouthful and walked out - end of funding, end of label.

Chalky I think that's a Soul City number not 444, there are trade paper ads showing it with a Soul City catalogue number, was meant to be a 3 track EP

The 444 release was Sam Nesbit Black Mother Goose just the one test pressing known of.

Yes the Chris Jackson was a Soul City acetate. The project was abandoned when Dave threw the tapes at Chris after a row.

It was supposed to be SC 120 the three track 45.

I remember an article in Black Music , where Tony Cumming's visited The Mecca , and Levine was playing Chris Jackson from a 444 acetate , the only known copy apparently .The record has the same backing track as Total Eclipse " You took your love that was torn to pieces " [ Right On ] .

The label was designed by John Bollen (from Earby who met Dave Godin when John was at Art College in the London area. Can I find my 444 label - can I hell

I think Mike Riston had some copies of the labels, long time ago.......

Interesting I never realised it was based at 444, Strand, quite an "expensive" address….next time I see David Nathan I'll ask him about it.

I had the crow autumn of tomorrow on a 444 acetate which I sold to Mick White from Coalville, I had it from Rob Wiggly who from Jim Wensiora.

Wasn't it going to be a Dave Godin project ?

I have  Chris Jackson  "If you love me" /"Whole lotta lovin"  on 444 . It says its a demo
