The label that is most stated as the Rarest Soul Label is said to be Shrine.

Criteria

 

• The label must have released more the one release as an demo or issue to qualify as a label with releases rather than just a one off release, so we are looking for a label with a minimum of 2 releases.
• Exclude unreleased items, ie items on tape or unreleased on 45 at the time
• Exclude Acetates

 

You can select by either how Scarce the item is or by Value (not always an indicator we know but a guide or sorts)

Very silly. There must be thousands of labels who released just one record, a soul record, then folded, they are all the 'rarest label'.

I agree. I think it makes more sense for labels that had larger runs of records that are mostly all rare though. That's not gonna work out here though.

I know that for you Brits, "rare" is what has survived to this day, not what existed during the years of the records' releases and the few years later.  But, it's hard for me to think of records as rare, when I saw many of them back in the day. 

Yes Rob we take rare as meaning what we can get our hands on now you had more access when they were new releases, i would say Shrine is the rarest label for the shear amount of quality releases it made during a short life span, Talk has it that when Shrine pressed their singles they were sent to a distribution warehouse which burnt to the ground thus all those were lost and never repressed due to cost.

How about Lou-Neita Records from College Park, Georgia - tracks by The Bishop featured in Manny's Million Dollars of Rare Soul book; Thelma Wilson, rare and seen in a company sleeve; and Gina Hill, lowly valued in Manship #6 on a green and orange label design. Not aware of other releases on the label - are there any?

Shrine is looking like a mid-size indie label these days with weekly auctions and plenty available at set sale. Sure it is a highly collectible label with some mega scarce releases, but no longer the rarest label as it was billed twenty years ago.

The thread has merits as we are kicking around rare labels with small numbers of releases, hopefully of interest to some of the collectors out there.

Yes. That is absolutely true.  As far as we know, they had only the 2 releases.  So, I guess we could call Phelectron a TWO-off.

Not bad at all.  Well, I still think Phelectron is one of the rarest Soul labels as all 3 releases have only a handful or less of known copies.

There are 18 listed in R&B Indies with missing numbers (at least three) so possibly more.
