There is a version on one of the 'Northern Soul Story' L.P's and think it might be the original take.

On "Essential Northern Soul Story" it's the 2nd version.

On "Northern Soul of LA" it's the first take.

Those are both cd's.

If you remind me which volume of the LP it was on I should be able to tell you which version it was.

Pete, it's on 'Northern Soul Story volume 4' (red cover). I can't play it at the mo as my decks have been put away whilst decorating is taking place!

I prefer the Charles Diamond version.

I don't like either lol

One of the best sides EVER, never in the field of human endeavor has so much been owed by so many to so few etc...

Ginger let his go.....god knows why!!!!

It's definitely two different singers on the two releases and vocally the original is far superior.

Opposite of what he says in both cases.

The original version features Johnny Hendley on lead .... It has been discussed before but I don't have time to find the thread ... Version 2 is Charles Diamond a.k.a. Charles Perry

Andy, I think you have this confused. Charles Diamond = Charles Penniwell  = Charles Pennywell who was in the doowop group the Fairlaines. Charles Perry is a different person. Here are Sir Shambling's pages on both:

https://www.sirshambling.com/artists_2012/P/charles_pennywell/index.php

https://www.sirshambling.com/artists_2012/P/charles_perry/index.php

Here is Charles Diamond / Pennywell's own website:

https://www.charlesdiamond.indiegroup.com/

Nowhere on his site does he mention recording under the name "Perry". Shambling's Perry listing does have a Mutt and Jeff recording which is a label association but it's still not enough evidence to link the two people named "Charles". Do you have more evidence that Perry = Pennywell?

The Pink Breakthrough Charles Diamond is a 1977 remix with to my ears a totally different lead vocalist and a superior production. Its an Original copy released on a legit label by the label owner.Add to this the sublime instrumental on the pinkies flip, all thats left to say is DJs please get it played out more often.Only time not to play it would be out of respect to anyone who was on who had the first version in their box and lets be honest there is a slim chance of that happening
