Classical Gas is by Mason Williams on Warner Brothers. Domino is a song on Warner Brothers by Van Morrison. Domino definately got the odd spin at Wigan but I only ever heard classical gas played out at some hotel back room in Glossop. So there you go Godz ps ... and the horse was called Hercules. Or was that Steptoe's? Edited November 26, 2006 by Godzilla Link to comment Social source share
Pete S
I mentioned this about 18 months back but I've found several copies of Mason Williams in collections, the oldest being that of a guy who used to dj at the Chateau Impney near Droitwich back in 1969-70 and he told me that it did used to be played at that time. Maybe it charted several months after release? Link to comment Social source share

Maybe it charted several months after release? You're probably right but I think that it may have also had a bit of a resurgence when Afternoon on The Rhino went massive. I remember one of my pals playing it to me in his house covered as Mike Post. When I stopped laughing I sold him a copy of "This Thing Called Love" by Cottage on Crystal covered as The Jewels. Boy were we young eejits back then! Godz Link to comment Social source share

Paul R
In the back of my mind I rember reading that Sam had covered Classical Gas as "Morning Of The Monkey" although it was possibly a joke. It was actually arranged by Mike Post. And although it is easy to blame every pop record on Wigan, It should be remembered that many were played before that, such as Domino. Stop Breaking My Heart Tom Jones, PJ Proby Niki Hoeky, and many others. Although the DJs at Wigan at times took the piss. At my first alnighter, at Vavas I couldn't believe that Richard was playing under my thumb by the Rolling Stones off the Aftermath album! BILLY Hi I don't know about Mason Williams Classical Gas, I seem to remember an L.P. track by Paul Mauriat - Classical Gas, around the same time as Paul Mauriat's - Black is Black. Not sure where I heard It played, a mate bought It from Global Records or Soul Bowl, He played It at The Drum a couple of times If I remember right. Guest Netspeaky
Mason Williams was played at the Casino more than once believe me I was there, heard it, and it was an oldie on the soul scene already having been played at earlier venues as a new release. macca
domino is tremendous. the caledonian soul orchestra, wasn't it? I do find al de lory's 'take' on it a bit limp in comparison. van does a mean version of bobby bland's 'ain't nothing you can do' as well. bobby's original is cracker though. van's alright with me. shoot me down in flames...
