Having just attended the Hilton weekender in Blackpool we commented that next year all the smokers we could see (and that was quite a lot) would have to go outside at the next one in 2008.

Pity the smokers if your venue is up a few flights of stairs as some are. How will this impact at your venue??

Stuart, I read that Hugh Trevor-Roper amongst others which, considering the thread, is rather spooky cos I just looked him up on the internet and he died of cancer!!

His "Last Days of Hitler" was OK but if you want the facts I recommend James Herbert "The Spear", and at least with the Herbert book you don't know what's going to happen at the end.

Guess at the end of the day nothing anyone can do about the new smoking ban - though as a smoker have always thought it unfair on non-smoker's to force our smoke on them, but has always been a part of the scene. Interesting comment in a previous post , drinking and any health related illness from that affects only that person - where as smoking forces others to passive smoke without any choice.

I have recently bought some filters that capture only some of the tar before going into the lung's - out of everything I've ever seen this has shocked me big time - I've put a photo below of one which has tar from 10 ciggerettes - baring in mind it only filters a small amount the rest still goes into the lung's. To actually see what would and is going into my lung's has sickended me big time. There 99p for 10 - you use each one for approx 10 ciggs then it's full of TAR - yuck.

Well i went to a no smoking venue last night & i must admit it wasn't that bad.

The room the soul night was in is used as a restaurant in the week & is 100% no smoking. Totally agree with that (unless Levines at the next table, then smoking should be compulsory ).

There was a seperate reception area where smokers could go & still hear the music & we wern't bothering the non smokers, perfect soloution.

Thing is in April (ban starts early for restaurants) this will also be illegal & we will have to go outside.

Now where's the common sense in that

I wish you the best of luck with it. I know it is a bit of a cliche (apologies for not having an accent for the "e" on the keyboard,) but if I can give up my 40 a day habit, anyone can. I would imagine you are quite strong willed and have a determined character. Instead of avoiding Soul Source, we could have a pact where we can be really horrible to each other if you like,(a bit like normal but with a special proviso!)

I tried to go cold turkey for a couple of days but then decided to go for the patches. They are not free but you can get them on prescription which makes them much cheaper. (They might be free for those entitled to free prescriptions.)

I am still grumpy 7 months on-this morning my car wouldn't start and you should have seen the stamping of feet and tears of anger as the breakdown guy told me the bad news. I was still crying as I wobbled up the road having been forced to use my bike! I had to go and give a cat his heart tablet without which he could keel over and die. See, I am still kind to animals even when faced with adversity!

The moral of the story is when giving up smoking, get a puppy, preferably potty-trained!

I would like to make it known that whilst riding the bicycle in question, I did not puff and pant at all and did not have to get off every 5 minutes to push it up the slightest incline as I used to-I didn't dismount once! I cruised along like a professional. I even forgot to cry in the end!

This is most definitely a positive thing!

Hey! Someone stole my famouse bike about 20 years ago! Was it you? It was a pink 1947 Raleigh Rudge, 4 gears with red mudguards with with polkadots and a wicker basket! I lovingly made a pink interior for the basket sporting strawberries! . I'd love to see my bike again I paid 12 pounds for that curl around handbared bike!

Personally I can't wait for the ban. I went to the Wilton a fortnight ago and have had some kind of infection ever since. The Wilton has to have the most unhealthy atmosphere of any venue. Low ceiling, lots of smokers and they never put the bloody air conditioning on. If you wear specs and walk in to the Wilton, you can't see through them for 15 minutes. Such is the humidity. Bring it on I say.

Got to add this,

I went to Stolen Hours last night in Ramsgate and they had a no smoking policy and as a smoker myself i have got to say that it was such a difference to be in a venue that wasnt full of smoke as my eyes didnt sting and my clothes didnt stink the house out this morning, it was a bit of a pain to have to go outside for a smoke but it wont stop me from going to a venue with a no smoking policy if anything i prefer it that way as it also cut my smoking down by at least half of what i would of normally done.

whilst having a fag outside and talking to other smokers no one seemed bothered about the ban and are either thinking of giving up or just having to suffer standing outside.

I dont think it will affect it that much if at all.

tracie and i both gave up smoking by using Zyban about 4/5 years ago we had both tried many times previously and failed, i also know a few other people that used it and also gave up, some very minor side effects tracie was a little bit tearfull i had problems sleeping (which i have problems with any way) give it ago fantastic stuff imo

Replaced by Kids who are hooked on gambling in dept before they start,and everybody knows with dept you get violence and crimanality and umpteen other bad things,cuba didnt stand for it why are we.

Don't think it's a "sham" mate. It's quite clear where and when smoking will be banned and this includes all pubs, clubs, village halls etc etc. In fact anything with four walls and a roof!!! The loophole may be three walls and no roof!!!

Not only that - only yesterday the Government issued guidelines for the police to only caution teenagers smoking cannabis.

Take drugs & get away with it or smoke a fag & get fined & also get the bar owner fined as well, not a sham?

Like i said earlier why don't they just make the sale of tobacco products illegal if theyr'e so against it?

For it or against it? Either way it will soon be a reality, I guess its going to be the smokers verses the non-smokers and as an ex-smoker (usually the most critical) Im all for it. Having just attended the Hilton weekender in Blackpool we commented that next year all the smokers we could see (and that was quite a lot) would have to go outside at the next one in 2008.

Pity the smokers if your venue is up a few flights of stairs as some are. How will this impact at your venue??

After putting on a new venue Saturday that was non smoking and on the end of a pier, I can speak from a small point of perspective The smokers all congregated on the stairs outside with the waves breaking over the promenade. I will give them there dues, most did'nt moan except that they were freezing.

The night was worse because of it, if anythng it was better, the venue was packed some have alredy commented on the fact that there was non of the eye itching or ripping your clothes oas soon as you got home because they stunk.

Will affect sould nights, yes. Will it stop people from going, no. Do we live in a nanny state, probably.

I to am an ex smoker married to a cancer nurse, nice outlook. If people wish to smoke the should be allowed to do so in agreed places for smokers, I disagree with some of the draconian laws in the states on smoking but in public venues it should have an impact on the liability insurance as well, as there is less risk of fire etc .
