No Pete it's more likely me who has got the wrong end of the stick..............

Sorry John, please continue!

Don't go by what it says on LP sleeves Pete, that's the Blues Busters, issued here as Philip James

I thought they might have got it wrong, i had taken it off the Independent Jamaica lp, you know the one

Yes, the one where they credit Jimmy Cliff's King Of Kings to "Sir Percy" as well

I like the Philip James Pete.....what's it go for?

At one point it was about 125 on Island...100 is more sensible and 75 a good price. The ones on jamaican labels vary wildly but none of them are as hard as the Island one in my opinion.

It's Tosh - Peter Tosh, that is. Backing vocals by Bunny Wailer and 'Dream' Walker.

Clarky was always trying in vain to get it started at the 100 Club, but i don't think that it ever really took on enough to take off.

Incredible group harmony rocksteady...the best of the lot

Two different versions of this were issued at the time - the one on UK Treasure Isle is much better than the one on the Jamaican TI. Ditto "Traveling Man' - although, actuallly, the best version of that song is the 1971 re-cut on the Techniques label, with Dave Barker singing lead.

I've had 3 jamaican ones and they all have an awful mix with an electric guitar dubbed over the top, I presume the UK one is the one I posted here, I had to cut myself a dub of it of an import Greatest Hits cd to get the best version...I'd pay upwards of £100 for a UK one.

I've really enjoyed contributing to this thread today, been nice to get the chance to actually play a few records, I hope that people have enjoyed some of the stuff that myself and the other guys have sent up, it does make a nice change to hear something a bit different now and again, if we can gain converts to the cause all the better!

I'm going to have to presume it, too, Pete, as I can't ever get any of the uploads to play here at Ace (which is why G.L. Crockett is still my last played clip). Never had any problems with the old way of doing it, of course...

...I'll try to listen at home tonight and let you know.

Surprised that you didn't post "Baby Love" by the Sensations up today, I'm sure that you must have a copy somewhere!

Fantastic stuff, Pete - it's been a real pleasure listening to this today, and yes, I hope there's a few converts as a result of your efforts, and those of the other posters.

Reason I didn't post it is because all though I've got it on island, it crackles badly throughout and I didn't want to post anything I hadn't got on 45, hence no cd recording

I like this. More like early 'Lovers Rock'. Anyone got any female stuff from 1975/76 in 'lovers rock' (soulful reggae) style?

We all have our cross to bear. :wicked:

Huh?

I have always believed that God never gives a cross to bear larger than we can carry. No matter what, he wants us to be happy, not sad. Birds sing after a storm. Why shouldn't we?

Great thread with some real soulful stuff - loved listening to all these. My personal fave 'soulful' voice from the islands whould have to be Jackie Opel (used to have 'Old Rocking Chair ' on Island) - any chance of posting a track or two by the great man?

Cheers.

Sorry this is the only Jackie Opel 45 I have left - not exactly soul, but a belting ska number and quite rude as well in a fun kind of way...love the very last line...

Thanks for that thumbsup.gif Yes, very subtle. Any idea what I would need to shell out for Old Rockin Chair these days (think I swapped it for a Sonny Boy Williamson LP on Marmalade about 15 years ago during a blues phase )

It was going for 175 quid but nowadays, 125 I should think

I like it, could you play it out, don't know. But an interesting number all the same.

Sorry, mate, it's not the UK Treausre Isle version, this one was issued on the original Ja. blank. The vocals are very tentative compared to the UK pressing, and the backing voacls from the group are completely different.

If I had the "Tech"-nology to do so I'd be happy to post the 'real' one up here. Sadly, I can barely play clips, much less organise them, esp. since 'they' brought this newer method of loading them up in....
