As a youngster what was your First ever tentative record play, request to a NS ,Dj , Where ,When ,and did he /She Play it ??

and yes he played it endlessly ,to get rid of me as an annoying little weekly " Tit" ,he actually gave me his UK beacon Copy by Root and Jenny Jackson ,{utter crap } to get rid of me ,It worked ,never asked again.

I was a young man at the Blackpool Mecca Highland room.  They had just played "SITTING IN MY CLASS" so I decided to ask for the other side, as both sides are great!

But the DJ didn't play it, because I don't think he knew it!

My first NS event was Clifton Hall, and i was always too scared to go up to a DJ to make a request (I was only about 15/16 at the time and didn't really know the names of most records).  So a couple of years later I was at a local soul do and plucked up the courage to ask for 'Jodie's got to turn and go'.  The DJ just looked at me, smiled that knowing smile, and said 'Yeah, I've got that'; turned to his DJ box and pulled out said record to show me.

Safe to say, after that I knew what the record was really called and who it was by 😁.

It never ceases to amaze me how some people can remember.  What the first record was  they heard at Wigan for example.  This is another, what was the first request you asked for..........

I can't even remember what my first soul night or year was or even where .  never mind any of the above. 

My first nighter was just as I left school in May / June 1975 aged 16 at the Casino that I do remember.

My first record request I'm sure was asking Billy Butler that legendary Liverpool DJ "what was that you just played?"  .  We new nothing back in 1970 about rare records; or even common ones come to that.

Sad to say I think the first actual record I asked him for was the Newbeats Run baby run. Because not long after I persuaded him to part with a copy. I know; pop to the core, but it was huge at the time in the clubs.

As usual Billy had records strewn everywhere behind the decks, give me a moment its here somewhere was almost his catchphrase!

Totally agree, I know I also went places but don't remember where apart from the usual we all went to in the early seventies.  The other thing is the number of photos people seem to have.  The only one I have is of me at the Catacombs, we never took a camera anywhere and only had one that night as it was the last one.

First event for me was the Dixieland 

all dayer in Morecambe 77.

age 14   I kept asking for the soul brother six ( 4 times ) DJ kept saying

yes etc never did get the hear it.

wolf and put me in your pocket .

As a relative newbie to the scene (around 98-99) i have to say i was always really chuffed by Mick H and Keith Money (to name just two there were a few others) who would always quite gladly play a record if you asked for it and also always remembered you and what you liked. Joseph Webster and Deon Jackson ‘someday’... Meant a lot as a kid getting into it and those records shaped my whole taste in soul music. Also Mary from the london mod scene who would always gladly play a request. Cheers to you all!

 

i think being asked for a request especially if it is by someone who knows what stuff you have is one of the most flattering things you can have as a dj. If only one person always asks you for a certain record thats enough imho. X

My first night at the casino in 78 

aged 15 , I heard teddy vanns theme from coloured man, the burning bush 

and my favourite of the night , cobblestone 

the dancing was out of this world and i

had never heard music like this before

strange and exciting, I knew was was in the right place and stayed  on the scene until the last night of the casino

i became a mr Ms fan and spent most of my time in there from 3am 

wonderful times 

 

Sometime in late 76' during the Wednesday night short Northern Soul sessions at the Casino club. Me and my mate plucked up the courage to ask Stu Brackenridge for Jimmy Mack My World Is On Fire. When he played it we ran up on stage to see the label...Palmer

At that time we bought records together and somehow got a copy of it on the Soul Galore boot, back in 76' we didnt have a clue about records but we did know it wasnt the original label so that was the driving force to ask the dj to play it so we could find out. On a Wednesday night you only had to be 16 to get in and we were all 15 at the time. Not as busy as the nighter by a long way but a great introduction to learn how to dance and hear great records that your local youth club dj didnt have. We had gone way past the snake, green door and doris troy by then and wanted the real deal and certainly got it back then. I recall hearing Marie Knight and being blown away by it.

Marie knight to me is a sound that always captures the spirit of the main hall and deserves its place as a true classic 

sounds as good today as it always did 

just wish I could afford to buy one 😅😂

St Ives allnighter January 76 I asked for Alpaca Phase III - I Like To Party after hearing it at Kettering Central Hall some weeks earlier....Don't recall hearing it played out since, (probably for the best 😁), though I still play it at home occasionally

Which one 🙂 I always loved 'You lie So Well' more than 'Thats no way' though I am probably in the minority 🙂
