one for music lovers ,one social.

So just a question, if people go for purely social reasons, have a laugh, meet your mates,get a few beers down and don't really care about the music too much.

Why does it ruin your night when a coupla records get played that you don't know,hmmmm??

What I wondered was if folks only go for the craic, and are not really bothered what they hear, why they are so upset when they dont hear.. FW, The snake , Moody woman etc etc. beleive me mate I've had some.

Also on my mind at the mo is the "two halves" of the soul scene , those interested in the music and those purely on the scene for the social aspect with seemingly no interest in the tunes whatsoever .

Unfortunately for the musical side it is the other side that seems predominant at the mo happy to go out and hear the same tunes they hear every week/month/time they go out ...what is the answer? Well 2 scenes really , small underground do's where the music is brilliant and the bigger do's where the music is crap and predictable but the handbaggers have a great night and never the twain shall meet.

It has been interesting reading a topic on a forum that most of us are on regarding the scooter scene and scooterists in general and it seems to me that the scooter scene has something we don't ... an outlet , in that they go to scooter do's for the social aspect of having a drink and generally have a ball , BUT , then they go to soul do's for the music ...where will the soul scenes outlet come from ? do we even have the capability to create one? is that what the 70's had ? local soul nights to have a good social night and then the allnighters to bask in the glory of the quality tunes ? have, in that case soul nights and allnighters moved closer to each other creating this "problem", I think maybe it has but I'm afraid that ship has sailed and I see no way out now ..give me the music above all else and I'm a happy man

probably they go for the social and at the same time would like to hear real out and out oldies as stated being played as background .......... i think..? maybe

I think it is impossible to generalise why people go out to soul nights. The oldies crowd have been discussed many times, each to their own, but always think you're missing some great music if all you want to hear is what was played at whatever club you spent your youth in. But that is only my opinion.

I have made many great friends on the scene since I started going to clubs again, I've found people generally very friendly, after all we share an interest that sets us slightly apart from the mass.

My ideal is a nice club, good wooden dance floor with plenty of space, DJs playing a mix of music in the styles advertised, perhaps a few of my favourite oldies (we've all got them), some new discoveries, and a crowd of my friends. We can chat, drink (whatever our tipple) and dance when something we fancy comes on. All in an atmosphere of no aggro, and general good fellowship.

I must be lucky because I generally enjoy my evenings out.

Music 1st, social side 2nd for me........Got to have that fix of at least a couple of sounds that are new to me, don't care if they're a fiver or out of my price range. If you want the social side then go down the pub !, IMO of course.

anyhoo it's all about opinions ,thats mine and some people like reading it

As for people moaning when they hear a "tune they don't know", then they may as well stay home! The whole point of going for me is the hope of hearing records I've never heard before!

Im a scooterist and the part you wrote above that i highlighted is spot on for me, as i go on a scooter rally with good friends and have a right blast but at a soul event its a different story as we know and hope that depending on the venue we go to that we are going to be treated to some great tunes of which some we know some we have heard before and some we aint heard. Its all a socialising scene really based on the foundation of quality music as everyone has stated at some point on here "we have made loads of friends and met some great people on this scene" and too of done that you must of socialised at some point. I and my friends who i attend nights/nighters with go for the music first and formost and often dont see each other all night as we all dance to different tracks or get stuck talking bolox to different people at different times. I dont know of anyone who goes to a night/nighter that goes only for the music and never to make a friend or two along the way by keeping themselves to themselves, silly me how would i know them as they keep themselves to themselves dont they. would we all probably change our minds on an event if we knew everone was going to a different one to which you first thought of going too. i know im probably wrong but whats new there as its only an insight from my good self.

For me, the excitement of 'going out' is so that I hear the music in a different way - ambience can make a record sound completely different plus of course you're in a different mood to that when you're at home and the volume of the tunes can also make a song sound completely different (to me anyway).

Therefore I love both aspects - being at home in my soul-conservatory and being out at a big dark venue with a massive floor that keeps calling my name

only idiots would go for social reasons. i go to hear good music, i do see some people know fair enough, i can text a few friends at times while there but i can hear the music some i not know and think wow that's a good one. Plus if any of my fav tunes come on i can dance and go home in the end happy

Two scenes? I have enough trouble attending do's on just the one scene!

I don't think there are two scenes, there are just some events that you either enjoy or you don't, it's as simple as that. The thing that I find repetative is the amount of posts about two scenes and oldies and upfront. I find that it's these posts that lead to divides within this scene. Funny how these different scenes come together at places like the Prestatyn weekender, everyone who attends enjoys themselves whether listening to the upfront stuff or the played out oldies, or perhaps the weekender crowds are a third scene?

I cannot get out as often as I'd like, when I do I don't travel too far, that is my choice. I attend both Bisley & Solid Hit Soul whenever I possibly can, now these two events are like chalk & cheese, but that is not to say that I can't enjoy myself at either event. Can we just stop creating divides that don't exist, well not in my opinion anyway.

Good point Mel , the whole point of the scene used to be based on the fact that you had to travel to certain venues , in order to hear records that you couldn't possibly hear elsewhere , Blackpool Mecca for example . Best ,Eddie
