My favourites change quite frequently, although the Knight Brothers 'I'm never gonna live it down' is always very high. I think the 4 CDs in this set are the best soul compilations of all time, Vinyl or CD, with Volume 1 being being the absolute standout, and they should all be in the collection of anyone who considers themselves a Soul fan.

Its a fantastic series of CDs and as said is essential listening.

If I remeber right from the sleeve notes Dave Godin put Jaibi as his all time fave you've managed to put it at 95th

Agreed they are a great series of CD's. I know that more uptempo material is included but always wondered why Matildata Jones' Wrong Too Long was included considering Part of the game is on the flip.

The best 4 soul cds ever I reckon, not one track that I don't like. Don't think I could rank them in any order though.

When I first heard this track I thought it was a complete mess. However, after many subsequent plays, it now becomes clear what a stunning track this is.

After having listened to this series that many times I thought i'd have a go at ranking them from 1-100. This is obviously just my favourites and not any attempt at an objective ranking or anything. Subject to change with time too, of course.

Bloody hell....Fair play to you for being able to pull off the exercise! Just looking at the list reminds you of what an awesome piece of work this was...could not possibly begin to attempt it, like somebody else has said, they change constantly and depending on mood etc...

But I always have a soft spot for the almost overblown 'Lights out'...If forced, that would be my numero uno but only on a personal taste level, could not possibly begin to start dissecting these records on artistic values etc...

Garnett Mimms 'My baby' was a new discovery for me, and what a discovery! The arrangement is completely unique, although I'm no musician, I think the it's the time that the band play in, it makes you really listen to it. It's a stunning track.

I didn't have much deep soul before owning these, they were my gateway to the slower deeper stuff.

I then went out and got the Eddie & Ernie, Kelly Brothers, Wallace Brothers, Kings Serious Soul 1 and 2 and Jean Wells CDs. More recently I got the Spencer Wiggins, Howard Tate, Candi Staton and Doris Duke CDs on Kent.

If pushed I reckon I'm more of a deep soul fan than northern fan these days (due to not being able to get out much and doing a lot of home listening).

Greatest deep soul 45 record of all time for me is Theola Kilgore's cut of "The Love Of My Man".

I never bothered with the CDs because I have a fair swag of the 45s, but seeing all the tracks laid out like that makes me think I should get around to it, pretty convenient at the very least.

Volume 1 has a previously unreleased take of Van & Titus and vol 4 has two unreleased Jaibi tracks

I agree that you can't go wrong with a Kent released CD...Lost Friends by Eddie & Ernie is an absolute classic! Also, When A Man Cries is an awesome compilation of Deep Soul tracks and Murco records compilation (Reuben Bell, Dori Grayson, Eddie Holman and others) is a real gem, as are all the ones you've mentioned

It's funny with the Deep Soul Treasures CD...like the Garnet Mimms track is a beauty but if you asked me to pick a Garnet Mimms track i would have chosen Cry Baby or Thinking...same with Lee Moses and quite a handful of the artists on there...I'm also really surprised that You Are Too Much For The Human Heart To Stand by Hermon Hitson isn't on there...that's a top 5 track for mine and Dave put it on another compilation (Sactified Soul) so not sure what happened there!

If I made a list of my 100 favourite deep soul tracks, some would change constantly and I'd struggle to keep it to 100.

Dave might have had the same problem and he was probably restricted by what was available for licensing.

It was reassuring that the albums did so well.

Thanks ps00, I bought volume 1 a few weeks ago and have been playing it a lot in the car - some brilliant tracks.

However I was undecided about the other three till you posted this and based on various peoples comments have now ordered.

I am also amazed that you can categorise the tracks, I have only listened to Vol.1 and would struggle to score them 1-25 never mind the whole set 1-100. How did you did you do it?

Swamp Dogg (aka Jerry Williams) (USA): Great, fabulous, spectacular, awesome... pick one! The greatest compilation I've ever listened to in my life... You are a super bad mother fucker when it comes to compilations... There's not a living ass out there who's qualified to suck your dick when it comes time to rate the quality, balance, attitude and track selections of this masterpiece. A person could easily conclude that 'Dave Godin's Deep Soul Treasures Volume 1' is the only album they'll ever fucking need in life... all of this wonderful integrity, forethought and, let's not forget, love.

A total masterpiece of a set of music. I'm really glad Dave got to complete this project before he died. As a deep soul fan he was such a pioneer and believed so passionately in the music we are definitely the beneficiaries of all his hard work.

Yes Dave wrote the lot, the last volumes was dictated to me from his sick bed but he wanted to get them out. He was as proud of the series as of anything in his life.

We had just released Cry Baby by Garnet Mimms on a Birth Of Soul CD and yes Dave wrote the sleevenotes (not compiled) for Sanctified Soul so he would have avoided those two at the time.

Ady, PLEASE put out that CD. What a superb tribute to D G it would be, and how tickled he would be to know that even beyond the grave, he was turning people on to his beloved tunes.

Been playing all 4 in the set over last few days. So man good ones but for me one that stands out is Black Velvet 'Is it me you really love'.

Yes, the horns in this number are just unreal (are they even in tune?), and then the backing vocals kick in and it just gets me every time. Really love this track

Great choices! I really love Feet Start Walkin and I Wish I Could Sleep by Doris Duke...she was basically the perfect vehicle for Swamp Dogg's fascination with mistreatment of women and infidelity in general

Otis does a version of Sam Cooke's You Send Me which is probably my favourite Otis track right now...at least favourite deeper track, he still cracks me up on Tramp, Knock on Wood (with Carla) etc

And the Reuben Bell track Another Day Lost is an absolute ripper, i reckon it would fill a dance floor

brummymick, definitely pick up the others...don't rush to listen to em all at once, i think it took me about 3 months to get all 4, but definitely get to it...oh and i just sorted the tracks into As Bs and Cs and then kind of ordered those groups...if i were to do it again in a few months it would obviously be different
