Given the fact this record is the same as Bobby king on Lunar then it would be reasonable to think King Superfly is just a play on Bobby's surname to negate contractual issues. Where is the provenance this has anything to do with Rudy Love. I stand to be corrected as my time spent at school was limited.

I also thought it was a slightly different mix, however the point I was making is it is Bobby King singing, with no evidence of it being Rudy Love.

Yeah agree it's a totally different vocal take but def doesn't sound anything like Rudy Love? his natural register is higher...soz as just agreeing with you and adding no info that your looking for...

I would agree that this is likely to be Bobby King. The mystery for me is why it can also be found credited to "Elijah" on the same Pick a Hit catalogue number.

 

Always wondered who Bobby King was. Or have I been sleeping?

cheers Jim, i had discounted 'your' Bobby King and the Bobby king on Federal...just based on not being able to make a match, BUT you may well be correct.

P.S. i can see where JM's thoughts around Rudy Love come from.

"This song is for you", Calla/CBS album. Track "Come Back Home" a Tony Matthews/Rudy Love composition with a Sax solo by Tank Jernigan.

I find it difficult to accept some of the accreditations made on discogs to certain artists, more so when the time frame between releases spans nearly a decade. Productions change dramaticaly so vocal delivery accomadates this in such a way it can sound like a different artist. IMO Bobby King on Motown and Warners does not sound like the chap on the Luna 45, however the chap on the Lunar 45 does sound like the chap on Reprise with the Stevie Wonder cover. Like I say maybe it's just a time frame thing. 

King Supply and Elijah unequivocally sound the same song. They have the same Pick-A-Hit release number; P-15 and the same flip sides,  'love eurydice'.         I always assumed that King Superfly and Elijah were the same person.  

The Pick-A-Hit releases have female backing throughout the song, unlike the Bobby King on Lunar, which has no backing singers.

I like Andy's supposition that King Superfly is a play on Bobby's surname and all three releases are the same person.  The lead singer certainly sounds the same on all three releases.

This Bobby King did this; are we saying that this is the same Bobby King who is the subject of this thread. He still looks very young when the attached record was recorded. The "Don't Give Up Hope" 45's were earlier recordings - quite a bit earlier. If you follow by thinking?

My thoughts exactly.

Now if "Bobby King" is a pseudonym for Rudy Love (which seems a bit far fetched), then it could be Rudy Love singing - otherwise it's Bobby King (whoever this particular Bobby King now is) singing on all releases.

The Lunar release also has got some guitar work that doesn't appear on the Pick-A-Hit 45s.

@neckender Could you by any chance check the matrix on the Pick-A-Hit 45s? They look like they might be Alco/Monarch pressed/plated and in that case should have a delta number which would help us date the release.

Tony Mathews who penned it , cousin of Rudy Love, so that leans in for for me.
